Scout Report – Pablo Hernandez

Michael Laudrup’s restructuring of the Swansea first-team squad continued last week with the capture of Pablo Hernandez from Valencia. The 27-year-old joins on a three-year-contract for a club record fee of £5.5m and reunites with Laudrup, having previously played under the Dane at Getafe.

With Scott Sinclair leaving for Man City, Laudrup has bolstered the Swans’ options on the flanks with yet another canny piece of business. Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the move, the new Swansea boss was clearly delighted with his new acquisition:

He has played a lot of games in the Champions League games in the last three seasons and made his debut in the national team. I am looking forward to working with him again; he is a good player with the right mentality. He specifically wanted to come here. The other players who have come here have come from smaller clubs, and here is a player from the third biggest club in Spain and he wants to come here. It is great for us.

The Statistics

A product of the Valencia youth academy, Hernandez played a single game in the 2005-06 campaign before being loaned out to second division Cadiz for the following season. Producing four goals from 22 appearances, he caught the eye of Laudrup and was snapped up for Getafe in 2007. A single season for the Dane saw Hernandez feature 28 times in La Liga, returning three goals and three assists, before Valencia splashed the cash to bring him back to the Mestalla on a six-year contract.

Starring alongside the likes of David Silva and Juan Mata, Hernandez proved to be a pivotal figure upon his return. Over four full seasons, the winger’s creativity was as crucial as his eye for goal – a total of 111 league appearances saw him find the net on 16 occasions, with 19 assists also accrued. Hernandez has also featured for his country four times, finding the net once.

The Prospects

Laudrup has been rightly lauded for his impact on Swansea’s style of play so far. Keeping with Brendan Rodgers’ 4-3-3 formation, his decision to tweak the roles of the wide men has had an instant impact, with Nathan Dyer and Wayne Routledge both profiting hugely. The pair have produced attacking returns in every one of their three matches under the new man in charge, with three goals and five assists between them.

Hernandez’s arrival, however, places major question marks over the Swansea flanks. As a club record signing, the chances of him swapping La Liga for a place on the Liberty bench seem non-existent, meaning one of the two wide boys will almost certainly make way. Able to play on either wing, he looks favourite to oust Routledge on the left, allowing Dyer to continue his menacing form on the opposite side of the pitch. Indeed, the acquisition of Ki Sung-Yeung also affords Laudrup further options – Jonathan De Guzman has been fielded in a central role but is versatile enough to be moved to the flank, should Laudrup choose to partner the combative Korean with Leon Britton in the centre of the park.

While Michu’s superb start to the season has seen his Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price spiral up to 7.3, with 32% of Fantasy managers now snapping up his services, Hernandez could offer us a tempting route into a midfield that seems full of attacking returns right now. Priced at 6.5 in FPL and the Sky Sports game, the former Valencia man looks an intriguing differential if, as expected, he is immediately installed into the first XI. The only real downside is that price tag – both Dyer and Routledge are cheaper across the Fantasy games and are likely to be maintained by their current owners until Hernandez begins to prosper.

Looking at the upcoming schedule, there is plenty evidence to suggest the new boy could offer an instant impact. With three home games (EVE, RDG, WIG) and a trip to struggling Villa in the next five Gameweeks, Laudrup’s side continue to attract significant investment after racking up eight goals in their first three fixtures. Hernandez, though, has sneaked in almost unnoticed – currently, just 597 FPL managers have snapped up the Spaniard’s services. While we’re not expecting a Michu-like beginning to his Premier league career, Hernandez has the class and ability to prosper as a key figure in Laudrup’s new-look side and, as Dyer and Routledge have already illustrated, there looks to be plenty of Fantasy potential on offer out wide for the Welsh club this season.

If Davies (4.0) starts for Swansea, there are plenty of options.

Otherwise Demel & Gorkss (combined 8.0), Clyne & Demel (8.1) or Hughes (Ful) & Clyne (8.5) all work pretty well.

Hey Deadzone .....had a great discussion with Marinureal on bottom of last page.

    Hazard v Cazorla

If you compare Caz’s stats vs Hazard……Hazard had 2 assists where he was taken down in the box (both calls were marginal). He also took 1 peno only becasue Lampard was not on the pitch.
Take those stats away and he is 24-19 pts in favor of Hazard. If you add the assist where Giroud messed up qhen set up by Caz the gap is even more narrow. Further….look at the comparison stats in the members area…..CARZOLA DOMINATES HAZARD 82% Caz vs 18% Haz!

    That said i have both……

I don't want Hazard. I've had Cazorla since day one, and I'm very happy about it. Chelsea will struggle against big teams. They got owned by Atletico. Did what Swansea did to West Ham. Bent them over, and they just took it.

Giroud is shite, a rich mans Carlton Cole. No point in having a great winger with no-one to convert his assists. Podolski is quality alright. Hope Santi cleans up cos I think he's class but Wilshere has been on the way back for too long now. Will be momnths after his return for him to hit match fitness. Can see Santi playing deeper, getting a few assists and the odd goal but mainly assisting the assisters like Modric and not getting you too many points. Meanwhile the Duke of Hazard will be raking in the points. I had to get Hazard in cos I had a Ronaldo type epiphany. Didn't get him years ago and he racked up them points.

I watched a video of Giroud's goals for his last team, he looks a decent buy if he gets some form. His main threat is his strength and aerial ability. The way Arsenal have set up lately perhaps hasn't suited his style so much. The jury is still out I guess.

I don't think Santi will get moved when Wilshere comes back. Wilshere seems more box-to-box with strong defensive ability, so he'll settle in the CMid area with Arteta/Diaby, with Santi staying in the hole behind Giroud, Podolski, Walcott and Gervinho rotating across the front three.

The deadzone needs more of these discussions 😉

I'm already starting to worry about buying Hazard now you've put it that way. As you say he hasn't exactly got most of his points from sheer open-play footballing skill. That's 2 assists and a goal where there was a lot of luck involved. However getting 2 penalties is technically a skill in itself (just ask Ashley Young, although he's rightly lambasted for it) I think the most important factor is how far forward Hazard is compared to Mata and how he seems to be the main creative threat.

You can hardly argue though with the points return, he is the vital component to Chelsea's attacking play. Being 1m cheaper Cazorla looks better value if he turns his good play into consistent points.

I agree.....there is some skill involved in drawing fouls in the box. However, as i recall both were not true scoring opportunities. The points haul differential is undeniable.

Don't forget, he led the French league in penalties drawn. This is not a coincidence. And he did score loads of goals and assists.

Anyone interested in Joining Bottom 7 Leagues?
    Its a very novel concept.
You have to create a new FPL team selecting the players only from the Bottom 7 Teams Of PL- Aston Villa, Norwich, QPR, Rading, Southampton, West Ham & Wigan (Same as last years Bottom 5 Team).

After you're done with it, Join these leagues-

Posted this earlier but seeing as there's a different crowd around, what do you think of this potential WC team? (I haven't WC'ed but considering doing it next week, I know I've missed out on value but this team is still doable for me if I choose to do it.)

Looks good. Only change I`d make is Maloney-.Guthrie and use the 0.6 to upgrade a defender.

Guthrie and Fletcher don't rotate well, though, so he would be leaving points on the bench in the front 8.

True, the defence is a bit light, but I think at the moment that might be the way to go. None of the big hitters are delivering. That could all change very soon I guess...

Baines has done OK. So has Vermaelen. After years of refusing to invest much in defence, I have finally decided to get Baines. Makes rotations much easier when you have one defender you can play week in and week out due to offensive points potential.

Very similar to mine - Trying to decide on whether to have Foster and Demel or Ridgewell and Jaask atm - leaning towards the latter for the attacking bias.

If you have Ridgewell perhaps mix it up with Begovic in goal (rotates with Foster and Jaask) and save yourself 0.5.

Front 9 looks great but a cheaper bench option (e.g. Guthrie) might allow you to upgrade a defender to Baines and have an extra attacking player in the team each week.

For the record, this is my current WC team

      Begovic, Jaask

      Ridgewell, Gorkss, Boyce, Baines, Cuellar

      Hazard, Michu, Cazorla, Maloney, Guthrie

      Tevez, Fletcher, RVP

In two minds about downgrading a defender and upgrading Maloney to J Morrison or Nolan...

Agree with Pepin. He should get an assist but wouldn't bank on a huge score. Last GW fergie decide to play 4-4-2 with welbeck up front and kags on LW then subbed I think.

Yeah, it is risky isn't it. He'll soon be almost unaffordable, but I keep asking myself what will happen when Rooney comes back? Roons will be fired up I'd imagine - doesn't wanna lose being top dog and spot kick duties. Driving me nuts

It's imperative to have RVP at the moment. By the time Roon comes back you can easily swap RVP for him (if neccessary) and make a nice profit+ have money left for some upgrades you might need.

Hows things your end. RVP seems a 50-50 with tough fixtures lined up. The 50 can go till 120 too or reach 20 too.

I was going to stick with Torres over RVP, but after discussing it on here a few times, I have concluded that it is too risky as basically EVERYONE is going to have RVP.

        Mr Mag,

Torres in form looks good punt to RVP. So it can be differential too. So take a chance with Torres for few more gameweeks might work pretty well.

Bale needs to be gone as he is not in form and I belive form is more crucial than fixtures.

I think that Torres could be a great differential. I just don't have the balls to go without RVP. I do think that it is a tactic that could pay off though.

i'm not going to take bale out for a hit with rdg, QPR up next.

it's the cuellar>jags where i see the benefit. eve's fixtures are 25% more appealing than sun's over next 6 (according to FFS' metrics), and jags gets more attacking returns than cuellar year-in, year-out.

with guthrie possibly playing in the hole behind pog, i think THAT might be the sideways move from nolan, with the defensive move yielding points.

If you Rvp, then you may as well do it. Although I am not so convinced with Arsenal and Cazorla yet. I had him from the start and after giving two disappointing blanks he gave me a good score. His goal too was a Reina mistake. He creates chances and is a brilliant player but it's the players around him that I am worrying about.

Yes it's the rest of the squad that concerns me.

Good point. He has however, looked more like scoring than Kagawa - who's goal was a bit of a tap in. Plus, Cazorla will be nailed on.

For what it's worth, I'd go Cazorla over Kagawa.

Anyone considering Suarez from about GW6 onwards? Looks like Liverpool have very few outlets for goals so they'll be relying heavily on the serial post-hitter to keep them afloat. Thoughts?

I don't think he can change his ways to be honest.

Not without them signing a decent second striker.

He barely gets you any points in FPL. But if Fergie has a brain, he should play him every week because he is the only player we have capacble of linking defense to attack.

Great player but not from a fantasy perspective. Fergie urgently need a like for like replacement as Scholes is only a few years younger than me...

That's what I have been moaning about for long. We need instant replacements for Giggs and Scholes because as we saw on Sunay, when neither of them are playing, United is just woeful. Fergie can go on and buy as many strikers as he want but a holding player like Scholes is what we need the most.

I think Cleverley/Anderson - Carrick will develop to be the core of our MF this season, with Papa Scholes slotting in at 70 + minutes to solidify the game. He'll get around 15 starts this season IMO.

          Vidic 100%
          Evra 80%
          Rafael and Ferdinand 60%

...this being over the season. For the near future R - F - V - E looks most likely.
