Watchlist

The Watchlist – Nikica Jelavic

Prior to his arrival at Goodison last January, there were plenty who questioned whether Nikica Jelavic could produce the goods in the Premier League. The Croatian’s superb scoring record for Glasgow Rangers was dismissed by cynics, who deemed the level of Scottish top-flight competition far too lightweight to judge a player’s real potential. Fast forward four months and Jelavic’s Everton record of nine goals from 13 appearances was proof enough that David Moyes, finally, had found a first-class finisher to lead the line for the Merseysiders:

Steven Pienaar’s loan return for the second half of last season also proved critical. With the South African’s left flank understanding with Leighton Baines producing a potent source of creativity which Jelavic was all too happy to feed upon, the Toffees customary climb up the table earned them a seventh place finish. As the lone frontman in Moyes’ favoured 4-5-1, Jelavic, from just 10 starts, had returned 11 bonus points in addition to those nine goals in the Fantasy Premier League games and accrued 69 points; a clear indication of his Fantasy potential.

With Pienaar back on a permanent basis and Marouane Fellaini terrorising defences in support of Jelavic up top, Everton have already beaten United and eased past Villa before succumbing to West Brom at the Hawthorns last weekend. While the midfielders have picked up plenty of suitors thanks to their eye-catching performances, Jelavic has crept under the radar somewhat, despite getting off the mark in the Gameweek 2 win at Villa Park.

In part, it’s down to Robin Van Persie and Carlos Tevez. With FPL managers desperate to install both in their frontlines, the need for a cut-price forward to balance the budget means 8.5 priced Jelavic currently has just 10% ownership. In the Sky Sports game, it’s another matter entirely, though – with just 30 transfers to make over the season, the Croatian is fourth most popular forward thus far – a real show of faith in his consistency.

Moyes will be keen to bounce back from the Baggies loss and, looking at the fixture ticker, Everton have a superb run of fixtures on their agenda over the next couple of months to profit from. Between now and Gameweek 13, Jelavic will welcome (NEW, SOT, LIV, SUN, NOR) to Goodison and with Baines’ creativity, in particular, a real stand out feature of the Toffees play right now, the Croatian could well be in line to rack up the goals and offer a viable value alternative to those brave enough to overlook the services of the free-scoring Manchester duo.

Have to admit I was one of the cynics who naively expected him to fail purely because he came from the SPL. Can't see myself getting him any time soon, despite potential, because of RVP and Tevez.

Yes, the teams are: Aston Villa, Norwich, QPR, Reading, S’oton, West Ham, Wigan.

I decided to swap Stoke out for Norwich, as Stoke will linger midtable once again.

    Degea (fedrici)

    Cole ● lescott ● clyne ● Hughes ● demel
    Pienaar ● bale ● valencia ● guthrie ● dyer k*

Rooney ● tevez ● graham

    Was thinking:

    A) Valencia > Cazorla

    B) k Dyer (don’t ask) > £5.9m midfielder

Worth a 4pt hit or just do one this week? Any other suggestions?

*K Dyer was a last minute drunken mistake which has been annoying me ever since, should i get shut of him this week to avoid a price drop?

I agree, I have Snodgrass who I am happy to play regardless of fixtures. Norwich are an attacking side, will give anyone a run for their money at home. Plus they don't have to win, or draw to achieve returns, they only have to score. I achieved 10pts from Snodgrass away to Spurs.

Pretty sure that after this International break that most teams will have Wildcarded and have 90% of the same team as everyone else, great if you're doing well as no-one will be able to gain but a bit boring. Every RMT I've seen this week is pretty much the same. 🙁

Yeah, I've done it as RVP and Hazard could well be essential and hard to squeeze in otherwise due to price - like you say a little early to tell but I've missed out on a few in the past due to stubbornness (the season I refused to put in Ronaldo due to the World Cup game vs England was a bad one!).

Fingers crossed that scoring settles down and picking teams gets more tactical.

Things always change, there's usually a template for 4 weeks or so then that gets broken up. Thats teh beauty of FF, never boring.

I'm saving mine for a double gameweek later on in the season as I've been lucky enough to get most of the "templates" (RVP, Tev, Michu, Hazard, Yaya) in early.

There's very little defensive value out there at this early stage of the season as no team has the form and the fixtures to keep clean sheets at the minute.

This is the reason I've spent so little on my defence, it's not worth wasting until someone with form emerges.

Arseanl look ok but they're not a traditional clean sheet banker side and their fixtures in the short term are pretty poor.

He's certainly got potential but Everton are renowned for clean sheets and Baines had a pretty poor season by his standards last season.

He's certainly one to keep your eye but he's not a banker just yet.

      Agreed. Hence have:

      Howard/Rudd

      5 5 5 4 4

      (Hangeland Collocini Rangel Demel Clyne)

Might even do a 5.0 to a 4.5 soon if I decide to swap Kagawa for Cazorla.

Vermaelen and Baines stand out though.

Agree - right now I could fashion a sturdy defence from players 5.5 and under. Arsenal (fixtures aside), WBA, Sunderland, maybe not so much Swansea with their issues now. Frees up space for the early big hitting attackers who can be downgraded as the season progresses and the balance swings to defences.

    Trying to decide on:

    Harte & Figueroa

    or

    Boyce and Gorkss

Want to make my defence as attacking as possible and, if Reading do stay 4411, Harte could be on penalties as well as free kicks and corners. Downside is he's a rotation risk.

Boyce is the most attacking defender that isn't Baines but Figueroa isn't too far behind... Gorkss is just cheap.

I'm not a fan of doubling up on defences so I'd drop either demel or jussi, mcauly or foster,
I don't see yaya as a fantasy force usually plays to deep
Sterling is a not worth it as he won't play every game or score that much (usually 2pts)

Would you WC this lot? I've taken a 4 point hit this week to get Cazorla & Hazard in. With the exception of Kaca and possibly Graham, I'm pretty happy with my attacking options. My defence and keepers are a tad stinky though and would like to ditch most of them, is it worth using a WC over?

Demel and Clyne are the bench defs of choice.

Never reckoned DDG, always knew he would get rotated in some games for Lindy, not sure why he was championed so much. So that's one to go. I'd also bin Zab.

Mid is nice, as it's the front line. You can get 11 out with subs, and you've got the RVP/Tevez/Hazard/Cazorla quartet so I'd stick. But sell DDG/Zab plus maybe Kack too over next few weeks.

Too rich for my tastes. I'd rather spread that cash around a little.

+1, not enough room with the plethora of pricey midfield talent on offer

Too expensive for a third striker.

Prefer Agbonlahor over Jelavic with £1.6m to spend elsewhere.

      Sack Wenger?

He's the best man at the club.

Never fails to amuse how much respect he still has after SEVEN trophyless seasons. Well at least I would find it funny if it wasn't managing my team. Said it before but he was a genius between 1996 and 2005, but no longer.

Actually I guess from the gravatar that you're an Everton fan, so suddenly the seven years isn't actually that long as Moyes has an even better record. Still Moyes doesn't get any money to spend....Fellaini £15m, A.Johnson £8m, Beattie £8m. I actually think he is the best man at your club.

I'm a Birmingham City fan, but I agree about Moyes!
