Watchlist

The Watchlist – Nikica Jelavic

Prior to his arrival at Goodison last January, there were plenty who questioned whether Nikica Jelavic could produce the goods in the Premier League. The Croatian’s superb scoring record for Glasgow Rangers was dismissed by cynics, who deemed the level of Scottish top-flight competition far too lightweight to judge a player’s real potential. Fast forward four months and Jelavic’s Everton record of nine goals from 13 appearances was proof enough that David Moyes, finally, had found a first-class finisher to lead the line for the Merseysiders:

Steven Pienaar’s loan return for the second half of last season also proved critical. With the South African’s left flank understanding with Leighton Baines producing a potent source of creativity which Jelavic was all too happy to feed upon, the Toffees customary climb up the table earned them a seventh place finish. As the lone frontman in Moyes’ favoured 4-5-1, Jelavic, from just 10 starts, had returned 11 bonus points in addition to those nine goals in the Fantasy Premier League games and accrued 69 points; a clear indication of his Fantasy potential.

With Pienaar back on a permanent basis and Marouane Fellaini terrorising defences in support of Jelavic up top, Everton have already beaten United and eased past Villa before succumbing to West Brom at the Hawthorns last weekend. While the midfielders have picked up plenty of suitors thanks to their eye-catching performances, Jelavic has crept under the radar somewhat, despite getting off the mark in the Gameweek 2 win at Villa Park.

In part, it’s down to Robin Van Persie and Carlos Tevez. With FPL managers desperate to install both in their frontlines, the need for a cut-price forward to balance the budget means 8.5 priced Jelavic currently has just 10% ownership. In the Sky Sports game, it’s another matter entirely, though – with just 30 transfers to make over the season, the Croatian is fourth most popular forward thus far – a real show of faith in his consistency.

Moyes will be keen to bounce back from the Baggies loss and, looking at the fixture ticker, Everton have a superb run of fixtures on their agenda over the next couple of months to profit from. Between now and Gameweek 13, Jelavic will welcome (NEW, SOT, LIV, SUN, NOR) to Goodison and with Baines’ creativity, in particular, a real stand out feature of the Toffees play right now, the Croatian could well be in line to rack up the goals and offer a viable value alternative to those brave enough to overlook the services of the free-scoring Manchester duo.

    KoL and other Jelavic debaters.

Yeah that works! Nice little plan.

I'm debating doing Podolski>Jelavic but I need Podolski to rise by .2 to get him back to 8.5. Only way that'll happen is if he scores against Arsenal and Jelavic doesn't against Newcastle.

A boy can dream. If he doesn't I'll probably get Lambert. Not bad fixtures either from GW5:

    Then it's wildcard time 😀

True but he's still not as accomplished and reliable as other forwards I could have who've been in the PL a bit longer. I don't doubt his talent, just want a bit more than (soon to be) two games worth of double figure hauls.

I'm on a WC (purely for price change reasons) but I really don't want a generic squad (I can't bring myself to ignore Haz/Tev/Michu.

    How do people view this?

    SZCZ ● Jussi
    Baines ● Demel ● Boyce ● Gibbs ● McAuley
    Hazard ● Cazorla ● Michu ● Mclean ● Snodgrass
    Jelavic ● Tevez ● Ruiz

The only places i could spend are:-

        upgrading Snodgrass (a reserve)
upgrading defence (clean sheets are sporadic at the moment, Arsenal aside)

I don't want to spend more on keepers really
Ruiz potentially but to who (wary of Ba given Newcastle's start to the season)

Really? I've got no confidence in Utd's midfield and therefore their ability to feed van Persie.

3 goals against a poor Southampton defence isn't going to change that. Did anyone see them against Everton?

Obv it's a risk, but no Utd coverage is one I'm willing to take.

They'll score goals. They always do. That midfield is better than last year and they scored loads of goals then.
Plus the defence looks ropey as hell without Evans (ha can't believe I'd ever say that) and so they have to go a bit Vindaloo.

RVP didn't even start against Everton..
          He's moved from a midfield of;
Arteta, Song, Rosicky/Ramsey, Walcott, Gervinho to
          Carrick, Cleverley/Scholes, Kagawa, Valencia, Nani/Young/Welbeck

So he should get more service than he did at Arsenal, where he did alright...

I'm on my WC at the moment and planning to hold off the Everton coverage for the next couple of weeks.

    The plan currently is:

    GW5 - Bank the transfer
    GW6 - Ivan -> Baines & Torres -> Jelavic.

Does this sound a fair strategy or would people be inclined to think about ensuring Everton coverage now?

I just dont seem to figure why people feels as if they have 'cover' Everton...

Having said that, Baines transfer is solid, think that the cheaper options than Jelavic offer more VFM now

I think you're right and this is largely why I'm asking, because I think I'm letting myself get led down a road I needn't take. I certainly don't want them both in now, I was toying with bringing Baines in now and reconsidering Jelavic in the 2 weeks time, but I'm struggling to pull out the extra 0.5m I'd need.

I am thinking of Baines, but I never have him at right times. Almost like I jinx him when I get him in (same with Ade!) so I am happy enough to have no everton.

In 2 weeks players form are going to be different, if you feel as if you want Jelavic then you will easily be able to find a downgrade you are happy with, dont concern yourself about 0.5 in 2 weeks..

Long term - Rafael being nailed-on will be dependent on his performances, If he remains suspect in defense, I fear he will be rotated often, and hence lose his fpl value.

Guthrie is central midfielder who will not score too heavily. Take more of a risk that wont actually be much of a risk because guthrie wont score too heavily. I wouldn't want to be without Tevez for 6 of the 10 next weeks. He is the main striker in the best team in the league. He is owned by 47.6% of people so every goal he scores is going to hurt your rank. You'll lose around 0.5 in team value by taking him out and getting him back in.

Going to be hard for me to look @ Aguero with Tevez's form/price.

I get that Aguero should be getting more points, but for the price diff (even though it's diminishing), couldn't the extra transfer fee be spent more effectively elsewhere.

It looks like a good differential option though as Aguero is likely to hit the ground running.

A quick note on the 'generic' WC team seen here: it's good.

It's good because the influential players who read these pages are good players with access to the best information.

And unless your mini-league is full of people on WCs who read this forum then it will not be generic, it will be distinctively good. Don't make the mistake of thinking that the players on this forum are representative of the whole game. They're not, it's a niche here.

People had around a month to put together a team for gw 1. A generic team was put together from everyone on this site.

2 weeks later half of these people wildcard the generic team for another generic team.

Nonsense. Michu, Hazard, Tevez, Cazorla (eventually) to name a few have all done very well. Most people on this site are doing very well in their mini-leagues.

A lot of people are - for better or for worse - wildcarding with good teams purely for value. Or because RVP is suddenly a must have and requires 2-3 hits to afford properly. Or because their defences aren't as good as they want.

I guarantee that the average ranking of FFS readers is higher than the average of non-readers.

    DDG - Henderson

      Interesting replies, thanks fellas.

For interest, the strategy currently leading my thoughts is this:

      GW 4 - save transfer
GW 5 - Kagawa & Zabs out -> probably Hazard & Newcastle defender
      GW 6 - Ivanovic -> Baines
      GW 7 - N'Zogbia -> Someone
      GW 8 - Bale -> Cazorla

De Gea was dropped for game last season and still got a good overall score. I'm happy to gamble on him for the forseeable.

All subject to £££ fluctuations of course, and I want to keep my WC intact.

Arsenal defence has been best in league more or less over first three games - 3 clean sheets, pretty much the lowest number of shots conceded. Sagna will get his place back but maybe will be eased in more slowly than we might have expected, if nothing else so as not to get injured straight away again.

Who would you drop after all rises are finished out of HBA and Nolan in order to fund a defensive upgrade...

Get rid of Hazard and Michu allowing you to upgrade others and have a team that isn't a carbon copy of every other WC team.

As you've played it early try planning ahead to GW20.

Probably HBA to be on the safe side:

      - He's more expensive
      - Newcastle in Europe (could get the odd rotation)
      - Nolan is 100% nailed on and rarely injured

Who to though would be the real question?!!

With Carroll out for 6 weeks I was inclined to drop Nolan. Didnt really factor the Europa League into my thoughts, cheers.

If I drop HBA it would be for McClean or someone in that bracket.

I have HBA and Nolan, and am thinking of dropping Nolan for Guthrie so I can afford Fletcher and a better defense.

Drop Nolan for sure. He won't be as useful without Carroll there. HBA is a much better player than Nolan is.

    some thoughts on prices:

1 - as it takes a fixed amount on NTI to rise in price (34,000) and for most players significantly less to drop (percentage of their holdings) - does that mean at the end of a season we finish with total value much smaller than we started?
2 - As players lose interst (and lets not kid ourselves - in January maybe half or more of the 2.3M teams will be inactive) - there are less transfers made - so harder to achieve price rises [due to the fixed number required]. does this mean that if you want to build team value you are mathematically better off using your wild card and taking hits earliers in teh seaosn rather than later?
3 - team value is a useless number. only the resale value represents the true "buying power" as a manager - you can have a 104 value team that has less buying power than a 102.1 value team. can this number be found easily somewhere?

      1. That total shrinks as the Season progresses. Will be about 25 k by the end.

      2. Less than half.

1- If only it were that simple. Players protected values and people joining throughout the year will keep prices higher than your assumption is based on.

      2- Yes

3- Define easily - have to pretend you are selling every player in your squad on the transfers page.

remove all players from your squad on the transfers page and it'll give your "true" buying power. Mine's a measly 100.7

It seems the view non-Tevez owners are trying to convince themselves that with Aguero coming back Tevez is no longer a good purchase.

Even with Aguero back now, fit and ready, Tevez is the better buy.

After hours of picking it myself last night and scouring through pages and pages on wonderful Scout I've "settled" on my WC team, THOUGHTS??

    Howard

    Jenkinson Rafael Hughes

    Hazard Cazorla Kagawa Dyer

    RVP (c) Tev Graham.

    Bench: Begovic, Rangel, Guthrie, Demel.

Gonna switch Tev > Demba Cisse next week methinks too!

P.s. I'm out to beat FRATBOY, doing well so far on 224 to his 198pts!

    Best long term solution?

    A) Agger
    B) Distin
    C) Santon
    D) Cuellar

Note: $ doesnt matter, b/c this is a draft-style league.

Worth saving my freebie this week to do Podolski & Kagawa -> either of the below in GW5?

    a) Hazard & Lambert/Fletcher
    b) Nolan/Dyer & Aguero

    De Gea, Federici
    Zabaleta, Cuellar, Hughes, Clyne, McCartney
    Bale, Kagawa, Pienaar, Michu, Guthrie
    RVP, Tevez, Podolski

Oh yes.. save the transfer! I guess the only doubt will be Zabaleta, u should probably get rid of him pretty soon..
If u bring in Hazard and Lambert for 2 free transfers, could u afford to do Zabaleta - Baines the gw after that?
