Watchlist

The Watchlist – Nikica Jelavic

Prior to his arrival at Goodison last January, there were plenty who questioned whether Nikica Jelavic could produce the goods in the Premier League. The Croatian’s superb scoring record for Glasgow Rangers was dismissed by cynics, who deemed the level of Scottish top-flight competition far too lightweight to judge a player’s real potential. Fast forward four months and Jelavic’s Everton record of nine goals from 13 appearances was proof enough that David Moyes, finally, had found a first-class finisher to lead the line for the Merseysiders:

Steven Pienaar’s loan return for the second half of last season also proved critical. With the South African’s left flank understanding with Leighton Baines producing a potent source of creativity which Jelavic was all too happy to feed upon, the Toffees customary climb up the table earned them a seventh place finish. As the lone frontman in Moyes’ favoured 4-5-1, Jelavic, from just 10 starts, had returned 11 bonus points in addition to those nine goals in the Fantasy Premier League games and accrued 69 points; a clear indication of his Fantasy potential.

With Pienaar back on a permanent basis and Marouane Fellaini terrorising defences in support of Jelavic up top, Everton have already beaten United and eased past Villa before succumbing to West Brom at the Hawthorns last weekend. While the midfielders have picked up plenty of suitors thanks to their eye-catching performances, Jelavic has crept under the radar somewhat, despite getting off the mark in the Gameweek 2 win at Villa Park.

In part, it’s down to Robin Van Persie and Carlos Tevez. With FPL managers desperate to install both in their frontlines, the need for a cut-price forward to balance the budget means 8.5 priced Jelavic currently has just 10% ownership. In the Sky Sports game, it’s another matter entirely, though – with just 30 transfers to make over the season, the Croatian is fourth most popular forward thus far – a real show of faith in his consistency.

Moyes will be keen to bounce back from the Baggies loss and, looking at the fixture ticker, Everton have a superb run of fixtures on their agenda over the next couple of months to profit from. Between now and Gameweek 13, Jelavic will welcome (NEW, SOT, LIV, SUN, NOR) to Goodison and with Baines’ creativity, in particular, a real stand out feature of the Toffees play right now, the Croatian could well be in line to rack up the goals and offer a viable value alternative to those brave enough to overlook the services of the free-scoring Manchester duo.

      B) is the one with the most potential but we don't know
      1) If he's going to regularly play a more advanced role than he did at Fulham or
      2) Whether AVB is going to put the crack pipe down anytime soon.

Depends how punty you feel. A) would probably be a safer bet.

REPOST as stuck at the bottom of the previous page

You guys reckon it's worth saving my freebie this week to do Podolski & Kagawa -> either of the below in GW5?

    a) Hazard & Lambert/Fletcher
    b) Nolan/Dyer & Aguero

    De Gea, (Federici)
    Zabaleta, Cuellar, Hughes, (Clyne), (McCartney)
    Bale, Kagawa, Pienaar, Michu, (Guthrie)

Oh yes.. save the transfer! I guess the only doubt will be Zabaleta, u should probably get rid of him pretty soon..

    Team at the moment is:

    Vorm
    Baines Rangel Cuellar
    AJ Hazard Kags Michu
    Tev RVP Petric

    Begovic Kaca Demel Clyne

I have 1 FT with 1mil in the bank.

Which transfer would you do for this GW? Or do both for -4 point hit?

    1, Kags > Cazorla
    2, Petric > Lambert / Fletcher / Berba

    Thoughts appreciated!

Yeah, hold on, I'm a Norwich fan and we looked great against QPR and Tottenham. On another day we could have won both comfortably but for some inspired keeping and a couple of contentious decisions. Have you actually watched Norwich or are you just taking your views from 'professional' pundits?

Seen every game. A decent performance against QPR isnt an achievement and AVB has ruined Spurs already. Snodgrass looks lively but don't see them scoring many and although the defence is more solid than last year, it wont be enough to win them games.

Santi - Arsenal are moving up through the gears now and he will be involved in everything they do

Ben Arfa - I have an aversion to Yaya after owning him for something like 12 weeks last season and getting more than 3 points only once. More objectively, as someone said, the ball must stop dropping onto his feet from corners at some point!

Just thought I'd point something out to folks drastically reducing defense budgets and/or saying "CS are rare this season" (I'm guilty of the former in the current iteration of my WC!):

    - Of the opening 58 possible CS opportunities in 2012, 16 have materialized or, 27.6%

    - Of the opening 58 possible CS opportunities in 2011, 16 materialized or, 27.6%

    - Of the opening 58 possible CS opportunities in 2010, 10 materialized or, 17.2%

If a strong defensive unit has been valuable in past seasons of FPL, it certainly still is!

nice stats, also good teams always start very poorly and clean sheets in the early going are always a lottery. Once they get back into their groove and start dominating games than CS will follow.

to quote willy wonka (the original, biyatches!): "strike that, reverse it"

wires crossed on the CS info, here's the real deal, followed by goals scored to this point the last 3 seasons:

        CS out of 58 opportunities, 2012: 16 or 27.6%
        CS out of 58 opportunities, 2011: 22 or 37.9%
        CS out of 58 opportunities, 2010: 19 or 32.6%

        GS through 29 matches, 2012: 83
        GS through 29 matches, 2011: 72
        GS through 29 matches, 2010: 85

So it appears CS ARE less common this year than in the past 2 seasons! Hmmmm.

The point is more that the big teams keep fewer clean sheets early in the season and improve defensively, whilst the opposite is true for the newly promoted teams.

Hazard: breaks his leg in injury time of his 2nd international -out for season

your squad doesn't look too bad, although Bale, Jelavic and graham are still pretty punty.... I don't know why people here are so into Baines right now (although I can understand the appeal). You've got 14 for two players in the back, I'd downgrade one of them and splash the cash up front.

You can get away with playing Foster every week for the next 4 at least, so wait and see.

      Tricky one.

If that was my team and didn't want to wildcard I'd do Kompany & McClean --> Cazorla and S Taylor

If you don't fancy Cazorla, would be seriously tempted by Kagawa to try and get a Man Utd player with good FPL potential vs Wigan.

I would be tempted to switch Pienaar instead of McClean in the knowledge that I still have Baines for Everton cover.

    Afternoon All,
If you had to pick one everton player for the next 10 weeks, who'd it be?
Assume it'd be between Baines, Pienaar and Jelevic?

A number of points I wish to raise which relate to QPR. So many posts on here as regards the club panic buying, and grabbing whatever became available. It is important to read a clubs actual policy before forming such opinions. If QPR stay up, and as with many clubs that is an if, they will be in a healthy position. The actual amount they have spent is not actually a lot, taking into account the number of players taken of the wage bill. Without such an overhaul, QPR would defiantly have been relegated this season , they have now a decent chance of survival, perhaps better.
I also find it very strange reading posts hoping QPR will go down, in relation to their perceived big spending. So much has improved at the club, in a short space of time, as a hoops fan, I am delighted, I'd rather go down, with a team which has the potential to play entertaining football, than to insure survival the Stoke. Oh and the words, why did he opt for them , will be wasted at QPR,( applied to other clubs also) is both arrogant and short sighted. At least when players arrive at such clubs, we get to see them play, not sit at the bottom of a teamsheet. Qpr are ambitious, it may not get them to where they want to go, but without it you stand still.

Not sure we are littered with star players, QPR had 5 players make debuts v City, team chemistry won't happen overnight.

I liked their performance against City. If Nelsen had his scoring shoes on, your lot would have won.

Out of the signings, Granero, Park & Hoilett are absolute class.

It just seems to me there was no plan at the start of the window... as the best players became available, QPR were reacting rather than being proactive in the transfer market. I don't think Mark Hughes knows who his best team is or what shape he wants to play.

That said, you're right, the squad probably has improved. The problem you get is that there has got to be a bit of unrest in the dressing room with so many decent players, perhaps only brought in in January, left out each week. The side will also need time to gel.

Big spending can refer to wages rather than transfer fees. Be under no illusions that the agents fees for the signing of high profile players will be huge too. If Joey Barton 60k/ week is a marker for the wage bill, I expect QPR to be in some serious trouble should they be relegated.

You may rather go down playing good football but i'd rather have my club ran as Stoke is, than how QPR is currently being.

I kinda agree, even before all the signings I said that QPR could be a surprice this year.. ending up around 10-12 place.. (not kidding).
IF they can get the team together, I still wouldnt be surprised to see them in 10-12 place.. some really really good signings

I think they made their team worse with these signings all besides Granero, ruined the dressing room with many regulars being pushed out and increased their chances of going down. This did not resemble a transfer policy but getting everything that was available and willing to come there- psychiatrists call this hoarding and it is a serious condition.
But good luck to them nonethe less, I have nothing against them and cant wait to play with them in FIFA

I'm a QPR fan so don't have anything against them but I think Mark Hughes comes across as a bit of an arrogant t**sser sometimes. Plus the pereception is that we have bought or acquired a lot of average players to replace everyone who got us up. And in some cases now seem to be replacing the replacements. Plus Hughes clearly doesn't know what he is going to do with all those players yet, leaving Cisse and Taraabt out then putting them back in, then out again, so we look a bit ridiculous. That said, Hughes has a good record of improving clubs after a while. I expect us to turn a corner in the second half of the season. And if we get a big fancy new stadium I would love it, because Loftus Road is a dump!
