Watchlist

The Watchlist – Rickie Lambert

Rickie Lambert fitted the pre-season bargain profile perfectly. He came armed with a record that more that suggested he’d be a prime Fantasy talent; a monopoly of Southampton’s attacking output that saw him fetch 27 goals and 14 assists, an involvement in almost half of their goals as the Saints swept to automatic promotion from the Championship.

The optimism surrounding Lambert’s potential took an early jolt, only to be resurrected almost immediately. Saints’ boss Nigel Adkins tinkered with his lineup for their opening fixture at Man City, leaving Lambert straining on the leash from the subs bench. Belatedly, he made his Premier League bow as a second half sub and coolly stroked home an equaliser before the Saints eventually succumbed to a marauding City.

A disappointing blank in the 2-0 home defeat to Wigan quelled the enthusiasm but Lambert was back in the side and on the scoresheet in the St Mary’s encounter with United. Lambert couldn’t prevent another defeat but not before contributing a towering header and a smart assist in the dramatic 3-2 setback.

In short, then, Lambert has already delivered on the top flight stage against two of the so-called toughest defences. Having proven his value to Southampton and his pivotal role in their attacking ambitions, it stands to reason that Lambert will get further opportunities to flourish now that the fixture list is brightening for Adkins’ men.

While Danny Graham has, so far, failed to capitalise on Swansea’s buoyant start to the season with just one strike, Lambert has sneaked up and, in our Watchlist rankings at least, now superseded him as the budget striker option of choice. Graham still holds the advantage in terms of ownership in the Fantasy Premier League game (7.3% vs 5.8%) but that could be set to change in the coming weeks.

Sadly for Lambert, the landscape up front has now been altered, however. Dimitar Berbatov and Steven Fletcher have both shown enough to have Fantasy managers freeing up funds to slot one of that pair alongside two heavy-hitters. Suddenly the budget striker option has become unfashionable – Graham and Lambert are perhaps off the agenda.

Lambert has the talent and fixtures to overcome this. Southampton have, amongst their defensive failings, bristled with creativity and goal threat, suggesting that they will attack over their forthcoming fixtures. The arrival of Gaston Ramirez, already impressive in his Emirates cameo, only adds to their arsenal to help keep Lambert fed.

With set-pieces and penalties in his locker, the 31-year-old Lambert looks almost certain to be in profit if Adkins can turn his attacking outlook into goals. This potential could yet sway some from the allure of the mid-price prospects on offer. The home clash with Villa will be looked upon as the start of Southampton’s season and could see the Lambert bandwagon revving its engines as another differential comes good.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

already took him out with my WC before last game - happily avoided a 2 points captain debacle, yet even with that, and with tough fixtures to come and rooni to return, one can never be fully at ease when not having the fixure proof machine called RVP. alas, the improvements to my midfield and defence provide some consolation.

Crazy transfer strategy that tempt me, I have 2 FT this week:

    Tevez>Berbs
    S Taylor>Baines

with the thought to go RVP>Aguero next week (with Rooney getting close to returning, Aguero back in)
Then Kagawa>Cazorla (or whoever else is in form) in 2 weeks

    Team is:
    Vorm, (Begovic)
Ivanovic, S Taylor, Rangel, (Demel), (Figueroa)
    Hazard, Kagawa, Michu, Nolan, (Sterling)
    RVP, Tevez, Fletcher

Thing im going to Mata instead of Hazard:

-Mata just got rested in the UCL only entering for the place of the injured Oscar
-Hazard played the all game so there´s slightly chance he can be rested
-Mata looked sharped when he entered against Juve
    -Mata is way cheaper
-And i just dont wanna bought a player when definitly his ship has sailed nevertheless he is a terrific player and is going to be in the first 5 top players

Almost convinced on Graham to Lambert, but Southampton's upcoming "good" fixtures actually don't look that tempting:

AVL (good) eve (bad) FUL (who knows?) whm (bad) TOT (bad) wba (bad)

I know there's a suspicion the Southampton attack is fixture proof, but I still want to give myself the best chance and that doesn't look like it.

Do Zaba to Ridgwell this weekend which leaves defence of:

      Schwarzer (wig)

Ridgewell (RED) Demel (SUN) Ivanovic (STO)

then next week do Ruddy to Begovic (gw6 SWA)

      How does that sound?

Keep Ruddy IMO. Norwich have great defensive stats and might be on track for some surprise cleanies.

I like Ruddy and do believe Nor will keep quite a few more cleanies this year than they last however their fixtures are so poor all the way to December.

Yes but I can play Schwarzer for wig this gameweek, then Begovic vs SWA and then Schwarzer for sou, then they rotate nicely after gw7

Ruddy/Scwharzer rotation is fine. Not the greatest choices for this week but then good for the next 5 weeks. Don't waste a transfer on a GK.

If I keep Ruddy fixtures my rotating keepers will be:

wig, MCI, sou, AVL, read, STO

        If i got to Begovic/Schwarzer:
wig, SWA, sou, AVL, SUN, QPR

Given these fixtures do u still not think it's the right change to make next gw?

just wanted to check you agreed with the line-up I have

        Kozacik

        Maggio, Godin, San Jose

        Hutzsi, Sneijder, Hamsik, Goufrann

        Falcao (c) Matavaz, Van Wolfswinkel

Is Lens a better option than Matavz?

Unfortunately mate theres been a few squad developments, Godin, Falcao have been dropped from the atletico squad for this game, and rumours from the Napoli camp is that they will go with a totally rotated team, no cavani, hamsik, maggio etc.

    For the weekend...

    Foster (Bego)

Baines - Boyce - Rangel (Demel, Nelsen)

Bale (vc) - HBA - Michu - Nolan (Dyer)

    Ba (c) - RVP - Tevez

Got a transfer saved already so doing Cuellar > Nelsen while I have no other pressing concerns. Main issue is Rangel vs. Demel so I'm deferring to price, think I'm sold on Demba captain now.

Maloney, Lallana, Ramirez, or Knightly to rotate with Berbatov from GW8? Randomly Wigan, Stoke and Southampton all rotate perfectly with Fulham (with nice home fixtures) over the period I am looking at. Leaning toward maloney for price, but worried about his injuries

Nice idea but have rather gone off rotation with the amount of benched points happening. Definitely leaning towards picking the best 7 possible from the front 8, with a starting 4.5 player.

Anyway to answer the question - of those I'd pick Maloney. Second best option may well be Kightly. Lallana and Ramirez wait on it, but my impression is that Lallana is there more for the passing now - his involvement is not spectacular.

I've never had a problem with points on my bench, its points from my first 11 that are important.

I can get berbatov + malony for 12.1m
EVE, AVL, WHM, EVE, WBA, SUN, RDG

If I go for Lallana/ Ramirez, I can extend it for 13.1m (same price as
FUL, AVL, TOT, EVE, SWA, SUN, NEW, NOR, TOT, NEW, qpr, SUN, SOT, SWA, ARS, WIG, EVE

For that money I could get Ba + Guthrie, and play Ba for every game (home and away)

I don't think rotating Berbatov will be very good. With penalties to fall back on he should do well enough in away games as well. For that price I don't really like to bench players unless under special circumstances.

Brom fixtures.......RDG avl QPR MCI new SOT

I'd say Brom's fixtures are only slightly better. Same number of home games for both. Swansea particularly strong at home.

Plus the hit means that even if Ridgewell gets a clean sheet and Williams doesn't, you won't gain any points in the first week.
