Watchlist

The Watchlist – Rickie Lambert

Rickie Lambert fitted the pre-season bargain profile perfectly. He came armed with a record that more that suggested he’d be a prime Fantasy talent; a monopoly of Southampton’s attacking output that saw him fetch 27 goals and 14 assists, an involvement in almost half of their goals as the Saints swept to automatic promotion from the Championship.

The optimism surrounding Lambert’s potential took an early jolt, only to be resurrected almost immediately. Saints’ boss Nigel Adkins tinkered with his lineup for their opening fixture at Man City, leaving Lambert straining on the leash from the subs bench. Belatedly, he made his Premier League bow as a second half sub and coolly stroked home an equaliser before the Saints eventually succumbed to a marauding City.

A disappointing blank in the 2-0 home defeat to Wigan quelled the enthusiasm but Lambert was back in the side and on the scoresheet in the St Mary’s encounter with United. Lambert couldn’t prevent another defeat but not before contributing a towering header and a smart assist in the dramatic 3-2 setback.

In short, then, Lambert has already delivered on the top flight stage against two of the so-called toughest defences. Having proven his value to Southampton and his pivotal role in their attacking ambitions, it stands to reason that Lambert will get further opportunities to flourish now that the fixture list is brightening for Adkins’ men.

While Danny Graham has, so far, failed to capitalise on Swansea’s buoyant start to the season with just one strike, Lambert has sneaked up and, in our Watchlist rankings at least, now superseded him as the budget striker option of choice. Graham still holds the advantage in terms of ownership in the Fantasy Premier League game (7.3% vs 5.8%) but that could be set to change in the coming weeks.

Sadly for Lambert, the landscape up front has now been altered, however. Dimitar Berbatov and Steven Fletcher have both shown enough to have Fantasy managers freeing up funds to slot one of that pair alongside two heavy-hitters. Suddenly the budget striker option has become unfashionable – Graham and Lambert are perhaps off the agenda.

Lambert has the talent and fixtures to overcome this. Southampton have, amongst their defensive failings, bristled with creativity and goal threat, suggesting that they will attack over their forthcoming fixtures. The arrival of Gaston Ramirez, already impressive in his Emirates cameo, only adds to their arsenal to help keep Lambert fed.

With set-pieces and penalties in his locker, the 31-year-old Lambert looks almost certain to be in profit if Adkins can turn his attacking outlook into goals. This potential could yet sway some from the allure of the mid-price prospects on offer. The home clash with Villa will be looked upon as the start of Southampton’s season and could see the Lambert bandwagon revving its engines as another differential comes good.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Any Liverpool fans around. What's the general opinion on Merseyside so far for the season? No panic, it will come good or oh no more of the same as last year and the year before?

Our results will improve, but I can't see us challenging for the title this season. Would be a nice surprise if we did though. Dempsey would have made a big difference.

I think Liverpool will improve on their current position by the end of the season. A definite loss this weekend as the players will be too edgy after last week's findings, but a few wins in the games after that.

I hope so too, but I'm not over-confident about it. Probably an even chance of finishing in the top six this time, and should make a strong challenge for the top four next season..

Forwards - Cant go wrong with Falcao and Eto - (Aduriz is a great cheap option)
I went with Bale, Schurle,Knoplyenka, Ben Arfa in Midfield (El Zhar for the bench)
Defense -Maggio is a good cheepie to add to Samba, Insua, Iraola, Revelierre
which leaves F' all for keeper which is handy cos Ive picked Brad Jones and a bench warmer.

Yes Fulham are not so great away as at home, but that is more about winning matches than whether their individual players perform.

They have already scored away this season and against Wigan for example have scored four over the last four seasons. I think they have the potential to score a hatful at home and a good chance to score at least once away with Berbatov on board.

For me that is good enough to play Berb every week. 6pt away.....who know what riches at home. What's more he'll play and is a previous golden boot winner.

And of course the other persuasive factor is that Berb is the word.

I am on a WC and I wish I dared to take RVP out! I have been reviewing the projections for my teams for the next 6 weeks and the RVP'less team is looking better!

    Front 8 without RVP:-
    Michu, Hazard, Bale, Yaya, HBA
Berba, Tevez, Ba (to Podolski wk7)

    Front 8 with RVP:
    Michu, Hazard, Bale, Pienaar, Sterling
    Berba, Tevez, RVP

Most importantly RVP is only a good (c) choice in gw8 and gw11 onwards, so this reduces his impact up untill then. In gw11 I can drop Bale and perhaps downgrade Baines in gw13 in case I want RVP back for gw13/14.

Isacki (and others). I understand the whole form over fixtures argument (to a point), but the holy grail still has to be the confluence of form AND fixtures.

So if you find two players on form, that rotate well, then surely it gives you a better chance of points, than one on form player + a bench sitter. You migt miss some points on your bench, but how is that a problem, if the players in your first 11 score more?

While making myself a cup of tea and some toast i just thought of this in relation to form versus fixtures. Would you prefer RVP in a red hot vein of form, with a run of good fixtures, or in a red hot vein of form with a run of bad fixtures?

there is no "bad" fixtures when rvp is in red hot form. it doesnt matter who he plays, he is going to score.

It does not make them irrelevant. If you have two players with similar overall points potential, who are both in red hot form (for arguments sake rooney and aguero), and one of them is about to embark on a run a awesome fixtures, and the other has a horror run of fixtures, who will you choose?

Rooney often scores more in tough fixtures and sits back in the easy games. Last season he was a fantasy nightmare for this reason.

I completely agree. I wouldn't sell a player on a hot streak just because his fixtures get a little tough, like Podolski right now. I would definitely buy a player who has done nothing, especially FPL wise, right before a run of favorable fixtures, like maybe David Silva over the next couples.

Yeah all things being equal obviously you want the player with better fixtures. So of course I'd prefer RVP with the better fixtures.

Unfortunately that's not the choice posed by rotation, it ends up being Ba with decent fixtures against Fletcher with not so decent fixtures, or whatever the options are. By forcing your options to rotate you've limited your choice of players, and hence reduced your chance of hitting a form player too.

Now of course it's fine if a player in your XI gets points and someone on your bench does. That won't happen all that often though, and annoyingly your bench player may well get more points enough time to really piss you off!

"So if you find two players on form, that rotate well, then surely it gives you a better chance of points, than one on form player + a bench sitter."

Sometimes yes but quite often no. This is where heavy hitters come into their own - by getting two credible players on form you usually have to exclude a heavy hitter. That could be RVP, or Hazard, etc...

Right, trying to get a discussion going here. . .

Who do you think is a better player?? Xavi or Pirlo?? Also reasons please..

Personally, I''d pick Pirlo.. Purely because of his deadball exploits.. Nothing to choose between them when it comes to passing and I think Pirlo is better at deadball situations.. Cast your votes people. .And with a reason, please 🙂
