Watchlist

The Watchlist – Shaun Maloney

As the stars of the Fantasy football firmament revolve over the course of the season, we frequently find ourselves tightening our belts in one area so that we may lay on the fatted calf in another. The grave is ever beside the throne for premium picks and, as the fortunes of the rival pretenders wax and wane, an underclass of budget kingmakers is ever at hand to furnish us with the means of acquiring the most seasonable allegiances.

Those currently destitute of a certain Dutchman might be particularly anxious to lose a few pounds in their midfield midriff and, whilst Raheem Sterling represents the most fashionable celebrity diet , Wigan’s Shaun Maloney is uniquely placed to offer both an alternative and an adjunct to the lithe Liverpool wing man.

Tucked in just behind Arouna Kone in Wigan’s 3-4-2-1 system, the Scot has produced attacking returns in five of his 10 games so far – registering a goal and four assists for a total of 35 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points. Sterling, by comparison, has registered a goal and two assists for a grand total of 33. With penalties in Maloney’s locker, plus a share of free kicks and corners, it may come as a surprise that he is currently the cheaper of the two: tipping the scales at 5.0 in FPL (although 6.9 and a striker in the Sky Sports game) compared to Sterling’s 5.2 and 4.3 respectively.

Playing for an unglamorous side and sporting an unglamorous haircut seldom yield column inches, and the gulf in ownership is a stark testament to Maloney’s comparative invisibility. Owned by just 1.6% of players compared with Sterling’s 15.6%, the Scot represents an out-and-out differential opportunity, and seems likely to remain usefully ensconced under the mainstream radar.

Last week’s assured win at White Hart Lane demonstrates the Latics’ capacity to go pound for pound with the big boys, and with home ties against West Brom and Reading in the next three, the immediate future looks bright for their attacking assets. In the medium term, the Wigan fixture list is more of a mixed bag, but a Maloney/Sterling rotation equates to (WBA, WIG, RDG, MCI, SOT, QPR, AVL, FUL) up to Gameweek 18 – the cusp of the winter wildcard season.

Offering perhaps the most potent union of open play and set piece threat in the budget bracket, yet boasting low ownership and strong fixture rotational potential – Shaun Maloney could be the key that unlocks many a transfer dilemma over the coming weeks.

Transfer strategy question: Barring injuries, I like having one 'hot spot' to rotate for a player who is likely to explode in a given week. Usually in midfield. Anyone else?

    Example: Theo Walcott this week.

have 1FT and 0m in the bank so here are my options
A: do nothing and save the transfer next week to take out defoe, morrison, nasri for tevez/suarez, sterling, walters etc.
    B: pienaar + morrison >>> fellaini + sterling for a 4point hit
C: just do morrison >> sterling before sterlings price rises more

The defoe and nasri situation is concerning me, hence thinking of sticking for 1 more week and take it from there

        Just a little! 😆

My fear has reduced somewhat because the fundamentals don't look right, at least in the short-medium term. Dembele (and Sandro possibly) out. AVB. That's kind of a long term problem.

Ah I don't know about ditching Bale. It's risky. he just whips in so many crosses and gets SO many shots in the box. Could score against anybody.

Adebayor coming in should help as well as should Dembele's imminent return.

It is really risky, he's a big goal threat. I might have to go with my contrarian belief in Cazorla's Ramseyness and take Cazorla out instead. I just think AVB might end up falling short and Spurs might do a lot more Wigans in the future.

Hi all, in a bit of a quandry, got a little drunk on saturday night and stupidly activated my wildcard!! was trying to hold out as long as possible, but whats done is done, now my problem is my third striker, i have RVP (of course) Suarez (had my fingers burnt before but giving him another chance) which leaves me 7.5 in the bank. Options include Chicarito, Berba, or go cheaper with Long or Kone? Opinions welcome please.

I disagree. I think it gave him an unfair advantage for qualification (didn't work out that well but the intent was there, which should be enough). It could also give him a huge advantage in the rest of the cup. He won't be playing for overall rank or other leagues so he can use the break weeks to take as many hits as he wants to make a 'perfect' team for the next few weeks.

If there is a rule like this, then sure, he should be out. He may claim he doesn't have a different team, and since he doesn't link his team, we may not have a way to prove that.

It is in the FPL under Terms & Conditions but that seems like a technicality, I don't care about that. The only thing I care about is him gaining an unfair advantage in the PP Cup. If he isn't doing that then I don't care.

If Baines can't keep a cleanie this week I have serious underlying concerns about the Everton defence and may look to ship him tbh.

I see people are cannibalising their midfields, in order to field heavyweight forwards. I have gone the other way ... 🙂

Yeah but the top scoring forwards are expensive and the top scpring mids arent
See Suarez and Tevez start price V Fallaini and Michu.
The top scoring mid startes at 9.5, for 13.5m RVP has you 5 extra points
      Theres better value in midfield

Which one of these options is best

    A. two frees, Ivanovic (LIV) and Lambert (SWA) to Ba (WHU) and Simpson (WHU). Next week then remove Tomkins for Wilkinson

    B. Do it the other way round when the fixtures are Ivanovic (wba) and Lambert (qpr) to Ba (SWA) and Simpson (SWA). This week Wilkinson (QPR) for Tomkins

    Thanks

    1) Lukaku + Hazard > RVP + Hernandez/lallana (already have michu though) -4
    2) Pienaar > Fellaini
    3)Pienaar + Hazard > Fellaini + Mata -4

    Which would you pick?

Cheers. I liked the look of fellaini on MOTD but I think I need RVP. Have 3 mil in the bank..

I am in two minds about this, for some reason I still have Fletcher, but also doubled up on Howard and Baines (it's not like me to double up on defence)
