Di Matteo Dismissed

Chelsea have this morning confirmed that they have “parted company” with Roberto Di Matteo, who leaves his position at manager of the London club with immediate effect.

In a statement issued this morning the club state…

“The team’s recent performances and results have not been good enough and the owner and the Board felt that a change was necessary now to keep the club moving in the right direction as we head into a vitally important part of the season…. The club will be making an announcement shortly regarding a new first team manager.”

The move follows last night’s 3-0 defeat to Juventus in Turin, which left the club on the brink of Champions League elimination – a season after Di Matteo led them to glory in the competition.

Although reports circulated this morning indicated that Di Matteo “expected” to be dismissed for last night’s result, the events will send shockwaves given that, up until recently, the Italian had steered the club to the top of the Premier League.

Chelsea now go into the crucial clash with Man City at the weekend, presumably without a manager. It seems likely that a replacement has been lined up in the background, with Rafa Benitez a popular name being discussed in the morning press. Pep Guardiola is the overwhelming fans’ favourite, though he is expected to remain on a sabbatical after leaving Barcelona in the summer, while Harry Redknapp’s name has been thrown into the hat this morning.

For Fantasy managers, this leaves us pondering all kinds of issues. Clearly we will now anticipate a fairly extensive overhaul of the team and tactics in the coming weeks, with our established thinking now in doubt.

Immediate changes ahead of the weekend would seem unlikely, although Chelsea’s preferred back four, their midfield formation and certainly the situation up front all now seem in flux while the dust settles.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

To be fair to them, they got behind Mancini last year when it looked like he'd blown the league, and the season before when the team were booed off after a 0-0 draw with Birmingham

Van Persie / Berbatov / Ba

1 FT, £3.9m in the bank.

    a) Nolan—> Silva
    b) Save transfer & remove Baines(Evans if he does not play) next week as well.

Would you keep Nolan as the 4th mid or get a big hitter & rotate Sterling/Puncheon for the 4th mid spot?

Only two clubs in the league can afford to consistently sack managers. It does prove that the if you just keep throwing the money you will get trophies it just raises the level of expectation. Chelsea have under achieved imo, they should have waay more trophies with the firepower and finance they've had over the years. They havent consistently dominated like Man U, Barcelona or even Liverpool did back in the day. This fact bugs Roman hes expectations go beyond winning the odd trophy.
It also proves the law averages works when making more mistakes than successes.

They should never have given RDM the job after the end of the season. After winning the champs league after half a season in charge, the only way was down, even with those new signings, it's a tricky task. Let's be honest they won the champs league on pure grit, determination and Drogba.

He should have stepped down and got some more experience before taking the full time position.

Just my opinion, can't wait to see how many people disagree.

He earned the job after exceeding all expectations. He hasn't lost his job because of his inexperience or that he is 'out his depth'. He lost it because the owner is erratic and has no patience.

Yea for him it was a double edged sword and I know I'd have done it as well. I do think it was a step too far for him though. He had no pressure on him to succeed last season as he was expected to fail, where as this season that obviously changed.

On a semi serious note you've got to question the timing of this sacking.

He's sacked him with Chelsea very much in the title hunt and with a very winnable CL match coming up. They can't do anything about the shakhtar juventus result so how is pressing the nuclear button now going to bring any improvement? It's not quite like last year when AVB was sacked with plenty of room for improvement and their fate in their own hands.

Also, surely Roman doesn't want to repeat the mistake (in his opinion) of settling for less than his favourite manager AGAIN? With strong rumours that man is pep yet it being well known he is on a year's break, I fancy either the rumours favouring pep are wrong or pep has been lined up already to come in. Having offered him lordship over half of Russia perhaps. And a guarantee he'll get patience for a project AVB and rdm didn't survive.

Why? Liverpool are getting better and better. Sterling has played very well so far. The only worry would be fatigue, but that won't happen until later in the season.

Other good options are Pablo Hernandez, Adam Lallana, Puncheon (cheap as chips)

One to watch is James McClean. He'll come good and Sunderland have a decent run of fixtures.

in all honest RDM is a nice guy but end of day last yr champs legue win was to do with a lot of luck and less to do with his great management skills.

he aint cut out for this kind of job. he couldnt even be sucessful at a club like west brom. he didnt deserve to get sacked but in all honesty he doesnt belong as a manager at top top clubs.

Outcome > style. He won two trophies and however he did it, that's a managerial feat. This sacking is ridiculous but hopefully RDM won't struggle for a high ranking job, most likely on the continent, at a less embarrassing club that will give him a chance to succeed with them.

Short term I don't think it will be a problem. New manager usually evokes a positive response from players in the short term.

It could be great for people like Moses who are cheap but talented and at the moment too much of a rotation risk to commit to.

Time for me to sack Ashley Cole.

    Who should I bring in?

    a) Jose Enrique
    b) Clichy
    c) Rafa
    d) none of the above

    ta v. much.

Rafa seems the safe choice, but Enrique could pay off big-time if he keeps playing OOP. Liverpool keeping more cleanies than Man U lately also. I'd probably go Enrique.

          That would give me
Enrique, Baines, Cuellar, Gorks and Ciaran Clark

Look OK? Don't want to over invest given lack of cleanies

Interesting. Although the sample is small but the pattern is quite clear. It's worth noting that in all of the examples, the points-per-game pre-sacking were in a pretty low range 0.17-1.67 whilst Chelsea currently on over 2.0 ppg. There's not much room to improve in this case though.

Not if you look at Chelsea's PL facit recently. 8 pts in 6 games = 1,33 pts/game currently in EPL.

Don't fancy West Ham's run of fixtures.

Toying with the idea of HBA + Lambert to Puncheon + Tevez but am worried that it's City overkill.

That sounds nice. I'm gonna go for Tevez/Silva combo if they do good vs Chelsea.

HBA to Puncheon w/o doing anything to Lambert wud be a S'ton overkill and that's not optimum. Or just do HBA > Maloney/Morrison

It's a different era now though.
Since the money from Sky and CL and from rich owners there is no compulsion for clubs to build from the ground up. Although United were the richest club back then, there wasn't this enormous gap there is now. They couldn't for instance go out and buy Mata, Oscar and Hazard and spend £50m on a striker.

Utd were skint in the 80's. Big Ron was told to sell a player to balance the books, he chose the Crab over Robbo. When Fergie came along he had a massive job as the youth set-up was non-existant and the senior players were all on the pop all the time! Utd grew just as football grew. Lucky really.

Despite all the success, I still look back on the under-achieving 80's with the most fondness. God what I would give to see a young Robson/Whiteside midfield nowadays! 🙂

      RDM gone...wtf!!!!!
      anyhow, on to serious issues:)

      Begovic (mannone)
      baines rafael cueller (davies demel)
      michu cazorla sterling nasri (fellaini)
      berba ba rvp

      0.7m and 1FT

So the main problems i see in my team are:
      1) Nasri...he got an assist last week but i dont have the funds to transfer to silva without a hit
      2) No tevez/suarez...how necessary are they in the coming gw..ba and berba are good but not explosive.
      3) suarez is playing well but has two away fixtures and on 4 yellows
      4) tevez is a good option i feel but who do i take it out and is it worth a hit.
