The Stock Check

The Stock Check – Boxing Day – Part Two

Gareth Bale blasts a hat-trick to confirm his returns to fitness and heavy-hitting fantasy status, while the Potters find a cutting edge to recover from an early setback and consign Liverpool to defeat. Here’s part two of the Boxing Day Stock Check…

On the Up

Gareth Bale
A devastating hat-trick took Bale to nine goals for the season and gives the Welshman six goals in his last six league appearances. Incredibly, Bale has scored just two goals and only one of his four assists at White Hart Lane, proving to be a deadly weapon on the road. With strong fixtures to come, Bale’s form will bring him huge investment with significant FPL price rises to follow.

Jermain Defoe
His opening strike for Spurs took the England man to ten for the season and keeps Defoe bubbling in the FPL rankings, some 11 points ahead of Wayne Rooney. Bale’s form and his popularity as a midfield acquisition will doubtless dent Defoe’s appeal but Defoe shouldn’t be dismissed lightly. He has started every league match since Gameweek 11 and has never gone more than three starts without scoring.

The Spurs Defence
Their strong run continues: Andre Villas-Boas’ rearguard have now kept four clean sheets in the last five after earning their third consecutive shut-out this evening. With their fixtures remaining strong (sun RDG qpr), there’s no reason to suggest that this kind of form won’t continue in the short-term at least, with Jan Vertonghen and Hugo Lloris justifying their current rankings in our Watchlist.

Steven Gerrard
The converted spot-kick at the Britannia gave Gerrard a third goal in three league starts and means that he’s now delivered returns in five of his last six outings. As tonight’s display demonstrated, however, consistency remains an issue in the Liverpool camp.

Jon Walters
One of the most unfashionable Fantasy assets around, Walters demonstrated what he is capable of by delivering a brace to notch his biggest returns of the season. With five goals and three assists so far, Walters has delivered strong value for his 6.4 price tag and, if Michael Kightly retains the right-wing role shifting Walters up in support of the lone striker, he could yet go on providing profit.

Kenwyne Jones
With strong and reliable budget options thin on the ground up front, Jones has quietly established a starting role in Tony Pulis’ side at the expense of Peter Crouch and is taking his opportunity. While the Potters attack is far from potent, Jones looks an effective blunt instrument and has provided two goals in three games, with an assist tonight – a good return on a 5.0 FPL price tag.

Going Down

Ryan Shawcross & Geoff Cameron
Both were teetering on the tightrope and both toppled off with bookings in the victory over Liverpool. The Stoke defensive stalwarts, with over 40% FPL ownership between them, will now miss the home league clash with Southampton this coming weekend.

The Villa Defence
Having conceded just two goals in five matches between Gameweeks 12-17, Paul Lambert’s back four have simply capitulated in the last two matches, shipping 12 goals to Chelsea and Spurs. With five conceded to City and three to United, it’s becoming clear that Villa are all too easily disposed of by the bigger sides. While fixtures are obliging in the coming weeks, confidence in the Villa rearguard has been shattered.

Steven Caulker
Caulker has, on occasions, looked a strong option within the Spurs back four, having enjoyed a run of starts from Gameweek 6-11. Since then, however, he has been subject to heavy rotation with the likes of Michael Dawson, William Gallas and Jan Vertonghen all vying for the centre-back roles. Caulker was benched again today and with Benoit Assou-Ekotto close to a return at left-back, it appears the Vertonghen/Gallas partnership could emerge as the established first choice option.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Right, looking at options to slide Rooney out of my team. Going to want to do Sterling > Fellaini next week, which means I'm looking at a 9.7m striker

Can anyone suggest a better option than Demba Ba?

Not convinced by Torres yet. And the fixtures look nasty. Benteke isn't a terrible shout, already got Berb. Would get Defoe, but have already got Bale, so might look elsewhere.

If only we had a bloody defence! We've gone toe to toe with both Manchester teams over the last couple of weeks, and given as good as we have got. Trouble is we've had bloody mike Williamson and Danny simpson to mess everything up! I hope mike Ashley is feeling sorry for himself right now. It would have only cost around 10m in the summer to get debuchy and a quality centre back. If we had, then we'd have been back challenging for 4th spot!

Don't get ahead of yourself, United have been ropey all season as well as DDG having a mare and an Evans OG. City haven't been doing well either and have been fairly toothless, their defence can't win them games. A quality centre back including Debuchy would not be bought for 10m.

Not sure we'd have done that much better!

Even though the defence has leaked goals, we've also had a problem with creating/scoring them. We scored 1 goal in the 3 game period that put us where we are (WHU, SWA, sou), not good enough at all. If we'd got the 7 points we should have in those 3 we would have been 9th.

Lack of stability all around is a key issue for me and that's down to the injuries/suspensions. Cabaye and Tiote have started only 2 games together all season compared to last year when they were the core of our side.

They've got sun, RDG and qpr next three and then you can drop Defoe/Bale after that.

But if you're not sold on doubling up, I think Mata is still a better option than Gerard. He might miss the odd game but will probably score more points in the long run. And remember it will Mata + bench player (when he's rotated) vs Gerard, it's not like you're getting 0 when he doesn't start

What would be your guess as to when they'll be out?

It's pretty hot here this week, so they are probably out all over the place down the beach.

Not a bad week with 52 points pre-BAPs, especially as I didn’t even have 11 men out. However, I have 2FTs and absolutely no idea where to start. Help!?

      Begovic, Jaaskelainen (okay with these)
      Baines*, Cuellar, Hughes*, Nelsen*, Mertesacker
      Silva*, Mata, Michu*, Sterling*, Puncheon
      van Persie, Suarez, Berbatov

Which of the above would you get rid of, and for who? I have 0.1m in the bank.

I'm thinking... Hughes --> Davies / Baker then Silva --> Bale - thoughts?

If you can take a 4 pt hit, I would do Baines, Silva, Sterling for Bale, Arsenal stud of your choice, and a big hitting defender in the 6m range.

Need to find a replacement for Roonpig. I'm looking at Torres, Berbs, Benteke and Defoe. Thoughts?

What to do with Tevez? Have RVP & Torres, need to downgarde to raise funds, thoughts please

      A) Nandez, with Rooney out I see him starting 2 games, If wellbeck starts RVP would be rested
      B) Berba nice run of fixtures, but i dont trust him...
      C) Dzeko think hell start next game, could be a punt...

Did anybody watch the QPR vs WBA game? How did Adel Taarabt perform? He's been giving me two blanks since bought him over three gameweeks ago.
