Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Pottered

Tony Pulis will need to reshuffle his defensive options after two of Stoke’s regular back-four fell foul of the referee’s wrath against Liverpool in Boxing Day. Ryan Shawcross and Geoff Cameron will now sit out the Potters’ home clash against Southampton after accruing their fifth cautions of the campaign in Wednesday’s 3-1 win:

The duo are two of four players who are set to serve an automatic one-match ban in Gameweek 20. Villa’s Fabian Delph and Newcastle centre-half Mike Williamson are also sidelined against Wigan and Arsenal respectively.

While those four are unavailable, a quartet of new protagonists appeared on the Suspension Tightrope after receiving their fourth cautions of the campaign in midweek. Yaya Toure, Bradley Johnson, Jean Beausejour and Maynor Figueroa will all need to be on their best behaviour this upcoming weekend, as will 27 other players, including the likes of Robin Van Persie, Michu, Gareth Bale, Jermain Defoe, Adel Taarabt and Kevin Nolan; once Gameweek 20 is out the way, though, the limit is then extended to 10 yellows. So far, a quartet on players lead the race for that dubious honour – Luis Suarez, James Perch, Craig Gardner and Angel Rangel all have seven bookings apiece.

Both Darron Gibson and Carlton Cole are available this weekend, however. The FA have overturned three-match bans handed out to the pair in West Ham’s Gameweek 18 home clash with Everton – good news for those Fantasy managers eyeing up Cole as a possible double Gameweek punt; the 4.9 priced forward has produced two goals, an assist and six bonus points in four games since deputising for the injured Andy Carroll.

Elsewhere, Cheick Tiote returns for Newcastle’s trip to Arsenal after sitting out their 4-3 defeat at Old Trafford, while Marouane Fellaini serves the final fixture of his three-match ban as Everton welcome Chelsea to Goodison Park.

I, like many, have been trying to decide on who to bring in, Cazorla or Walcott?

I'm not sure that this is the best reasoning for justifying bringing in Walcott over Cazorla, but having only 2.7% ownership is insane, and is something which I think can be exploited. Obviously Cazorla is the preferred choice given his assured starts etc., but the extra million will come in very handy elsewhere, a factor which has to be weighted accordingly...

Over the last 4 home games we have seen very similar scoring between the two, suggesting that at home Walcott can at least match Cazorla for returns (important to note since Arsenal have 4 home games in the next 6 before end of WC period)...

    Walcott - 8, 12, 2, 0 (didn't play)
    Cazorla - 2, 13, 2, 6

So, you are getting a player who, for a million less, has shown he can match Cazorla's returns at home... the upside to all of this is the possibility of Walcott pulling a freak double figure haul out of his ass (much like Cazorla at Reading)... if this were to happen, you would be guaranteed to make ground on your fellow Cazorla owning competitors. The reverse is also possible, however... and (even if it is extremely unlikely to happen again) if lightning were to strike twice, I certainly wouldn't want to miss out a second time...

Arsenal also have 2 away games in this period that could be profitable...

    Walcott - 0 (didn't play), 8, 8, 6
    Cazorla - 3, 2, 23, 3

Looking at how these two players have scored over the last 4 away games shows us that Walcott has been extremely consistent without setting the world on fire, whereas Cazorla had one night of brilliance amongst several nights of mediocrity. Obviously everyone would have wanted Cazorla in their team for the Reading haul, but it came out of the blue and there was certainly no form to suggest it might have happened in the first place, which suggests it was a freak incident, and is unlikely to happen again.

I have to say it is the riskier option to own Walcott, given his penchant for being rested occasionally, but when picked he has shown a remarkable consistency of scoring points... all of which has me leaning towards him this time...

i'm going for walcott: cheaper and therefore easier to fit my squad, and i feel like he can be more explosive (that game vs reading was kind of a freak performance by cazorla)

Good analysis. I've watched Arsenal a few times this season, and being a Caz owner was frustrating at times, he comes so deep to get the ball, and ends up spending most of the match away from the danger area. But then he seems to have a knack of getting into the box right when he needs to be!

If Walcott was completely fit and starting as a striker - or even in a front 3 - then I'd be tempted to have him in instead of Caz for sure. I expect them both to score well in January though. Having both might be an interesting option.

Could you compare Michu > Walcott being similar to Cazorla > Bale last week?

I wanted Cazorla back and would lose 0.2 getting him back but I chased the points instead, this week the same situation occurs as I doubt Michu will start.

I've decided my style of FPL play is not really suited to the head to head format. I always plan ahead rather than just concentrating on the current GW as a lot of people seem to do. That means I often miss out on a fairly obvious option for that week in order to stick to a longer term plan.

This tends to mean that I rarely seem to have a really great week but rarely have poor weeks either, mainly just a series of "good" weeks.

    Anyone else find this?

How is that not suited to H2H style? Consistency is the key to H2H's. Making sure that when your opponent has a bad or okay day you get the 3 points. If they have a spectacular week then they were probably going to win anyway.

I really don't think anybody plans H2H games tbh. If you plan for the future, you're planning for 'future' H2Hs, but not as your main priority. You an only change one player (for free) at a time anyway so it' not like you can really do a lot in order to win a H2H that you wouldn't do anyway. Maybe I'm missing something as I'm failing in Serie A but doing alright overalll :p

you have to have balance between long term plans and the current gw. but in general I think ffs managers tend to look a bit more to the long term so if you have a h2h with them, it should be even in terms of what you're saying

Can't understand this Nolan bandwagon at all tbh. He hasn't scored or assisted in 7 GW's - i.e. no form at all.

Sure, West Ham have good fixtures but if I remember correctly FIXTURES < FORM.

Hmm I don't like the hit myself, but your midfield does need strengthening, TW...

I'd keep Michu since he'll be back scoring for fun soon enough... Sess would be my favourite for the chop, but if you get rid of Sterling you will lose a lot of inherent gained value which you can't get back...

that PPG is a bit deceptive since Aguero was injured for the first 4 games - where Tevez returned 38 points - or 9 points per game - without the threat of rotation.

With the threat of rotation and since then he's had only one large score -19 points at home to Aston Villa, which included a penalty kick - though he is not the taker, Aguero is the regular taker.

He is amazing if nailed on for 90 a game like Suarez, but the problem is that he's not.

Appreciate your post - all makes sense.
Not sure on alternatives though in a similar-ish price...Saurez blows hot and cold, as does Ba...and I have Defoe already.
Reason I will keep Tevez is that you just know he will quietly go about scoring and getting assists, and do not forget, City still have not hit 4th gear yet.

But as Berba has shown you cant just sit around waiting for City to hit top speed, 6 GW's could go by with only 2 pts each week for sustanence.

If I saw any threat in City at the moment I would get him in, but its not exactly inviting to be able to captain him.
