Scout Notes – Gameweek 20 – Sunday

Liverpool brush past a woeful QPR as Luis Suarez masterminds a first half dismantling of the R’s defence. Over at Goodison, Everton’s unbeaten home record is snatched by another efficient Chelsea display under Rafa Benitez as Frank Lampard fires a brace. Here’s the Notes from Sunday’s two Gameweek 20 encounters…

Suarez Torments The Hapless R’s
Two more strikes from Luis Suarez capped a performance that simply dazzled QPR’s centre-back pairing of Ryan Nelsen and Clint Hill. The R’s rearguard failed to find answers for the Uruguayan’s movement and his confidence was clear throughout – Fantasy managers without Suarez will be thankful that he failed to add to his early two goal tally as the match progressed. Before the late goal against Fulham at Anfield in Gameweek 18, Suarez had gone four league starts without a strike – his longest run without Fantasy returns this season. We’ve seen a new level of consistency from the Liverpool man, then, suggesting that forthcoming fixtures against Sunderland, United and Norwich could continue to bring profit. The schedule does stiffen, however, with Arsenal and City to follow soon after the United visit – Suarez will have to demonstrate fixture proof status if he is to keep pace with the leading forwards on show – Robin Van Persie and Demba Ba. So far in the Gameweek, interest in Suarez has been tempered with Ba enjoying twice as many new suitors off the back of his brace at the Emirates and perhaps talk of a move to Stamford Bridge in January.

Gerrard’s Quiet Resurgence Continues
While our attentions turn to the likes of Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini in the light of Gareth Bale’s one-match ban, Steven Gerrard sits out of the limelight having scored or assisted in his last five league starts. Gerrard’s consistency in December has been superb and has seen him scale the FPL midfielder rankings and has threatened to establish him as a viable transfer target once more. A punt on Gerrard as a Bale replacement with Sunderland visiting Anfield on Wednesday would seem a decent move, although this would likely only be a short-term measure; as mentioned, Liverpool’s schedule hands them a series of tough opponents that will likely dent attacking potential over the next month.

Mata Makes His Case
The Spaniard is another who has shown a frightening level of consistency to earn himself a constant stream of Fantasy suitors. His assist and two bonus points from Chelsea’s 2-1 win at Goodison means that, like Gerrard, he has returned in his last five league starts. With QPR at the Bridge on Wednesday, Mata looks well placed to earn investment with some Bale owners looking to swap their suspended asset. The concern with Mata is, of course, rotation within the Chelsea squad. Mata has started the last four league outings, with Eden Hazard, Oscar and Victor Moses all rotated around him – that would suggest that Mata could be benched for the visit of Rangers. However, with Victor Moses and Mikel set to leave for the African Cup of Nations, it would seem likely that Benitez will recall that pair for Wednesday’s game, while Oscar was also only given 6 minutes of action at Goodison. That would perhaps make Eden Hazard more vulnerable, with Moses or Oscar taking his role out wide, though it remains to be seen if Benitez will gamble on facing Harry Redknapp’s side without both Hazard and Mata.

Luiz Cementing Midfield Role
Significantly, Rafa Benitez opted to leave Mikel on the bench at Everton, restoring Ramires to his midfield and keeping David Luiz in a midfield pairing with the recalled Frank Lampard. Luiz was at his combative best, earning a sixth booking of the season but there can also be no doubt that he does offer some attacking menace in this advanced role, while he’s also added himself to the pecking order at direct free-kicks. With Mikel set to depart for African Cup of Nations duty after Chelsea’s FA Cup tie, Luiz would seem well placed to retain the midfield role for fixtures against Stoke, Arsenal, Reading and Newcastle. Three of that four are away from home, but, while clean sheets could be difficult to earn, Luiz will at least offer the chance of attacking points. A full 0.5 cheaper than Branislav Ivanovic and with just 4% ownership, Luiz looks a decent January wildcard consideration.

Turnbull Set For R’s Start
We could be offered a decent budget option in the Chelsea goal for Gameweek 21, with Ross Turnbull, priced at just 4.3 in the FPL, set to start in the absence of the injured Petr Cech. Chelsea’s number one was withdrawn at half-time at Goodison after suffering “a strained adductor muscle at the top of his leg” and will be a doubt for the quick turnaround in fixtures. Rafa brought us this post-match on Cech’s situation…

“He felt something. We have to wait, but obviously we didn’t want to take any risk…We’ll have to do a scan and see…These things depend on the doctors.”

Benitez also confirmed that the QPR game would likely come too soon for John Terry.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

To the people who are speculating about Mata vs QPR, while I commend your efforts...it's also worth noting that you know jack sh*t about what's going to happen. Just like no-one was expecting RVP to be rested and then he was. But not many were saying he'd be rested because they all owned him. But with Mata people who don't own him want him but can't buy him because of this rotation/rest concern. That will always be why people won't buy Chelsea mids I'd assume so thanks for the extra points.

But back to my original point, saying stuff like Mata NEEDS a rest and that it makes sense for him to be rested is all well and good but that's you just second guessing Rafa's ways. But we really don't have much info on Rafa's ways yet at Chelsea. And now that they're out of the champions league they have no reason to 'preserve' Mata's energy for the big games like he was. That was the only reason for his constant resting...because they were scared if he got injured they'd have no chance. In the end it was futile and a lesson was learnt: 'just play Mata and you will win'

While it's easy to say 'Mata will be rested for this easy game'. I can assure you no manager in their right mind (especially one under as much pressure as Rafa) sees any game as 'easy' and as chasers in a title race (at least they like to claim they are) they will want to win every single game if possible. And QPR are going to be fighting for their lives. So I would not rush to conclusions about the lineup as you nor I have any idea what it will be.

    Thanks

Well put. A lot of the talk on here with big players being rested tends to be scare-mongering from people who don't have the players in question. It was less than a week ago that Mata said he felt strong, happy, and ready to play every game, so i dont know how that could've changed so quickly.

Find me a link of a professional player saying he wants to be benched because he is tired and I will admit I am wrong. I think they would rather collapse on the field before being benched.

You're right, no-one would come out and say they dont want to play. But its not often someone comes out and openly says they dont want to get rested. I think Mata and Rafa may be quite close, so he wouldnt have said it if there was a chance Rafa might not like it.

For me, rested or not Mata is on fire right now. I'll take him missing one game every now and again if it means he gets a goal/assist in every game either side of it. QPR is also a derby, which will need to be considered. You don't rest your big players in games like that!

That's a pretty good rant right there!
You are right in that it is all speculation but everyone has that right to do so on here and then discuss. Some agree with certain opinions, some don't. You know what they say about opinions! 🙂
As long as they don't state their opinions as if they were fact and put down other peoples counter ideas then I don't much mind. Take it all with a grain of salt and make up your own mind about what seems right to you.

      My 2 cents 🙂

Cheers, I agree with you here. I guess it's just me getting the sense that once someone says something like 'Mata will be rested' it quickly becomes this 'absolute truth' on this forum. Like last week the 'RVP will start' mantra was going on. But then he doesn't and everyone is flabbergasted about it.

Suppose the best advice is expect the unexpected.

I have him and am happy with him starting, but also for a bench role...bound to come off the bench if rested and still mop up points. Mata is simply marvellous to own and like you I'm thankful for all those silly billies who do not yet own him. Great player in both fantasy and real life football.

You defence is ropey at best. Enrique is not coming back any time soon and even if he does he is a walking time bomb as he cant stay fit.

For me would be tempted to flog him now before he drops and get in say Azpilicueta who is less money and should get you six points maybe more against a very poor QPR.

that 5 man midfield is too nice and consistent. how about lambert as a bench fodder. with suspensions and injuries i end up playing a bench fodder anyways. better off having a decent one rather than getting 2pters

Berba is no where near the class of the others. Get Lambert for a lot less - Probably has more goals then Berba I dont know and get some like Gibbs, Azpilicueta or Johnson all of which are not expensive but get points.
