The Stock Check

The Stock Check – Tuesday – Part Two

Southampton battle for a point at St Mary’s as Theo Walcott endures a frustrating evening on his return to his former stamping ground. Here’s the Stock Check on Saturday’s evening kick-off…

On the Up

Gaston Ramirez
Back in the side having been kept out of the heat of the Britannia battle, the Uruguayan fired home his third goal of the season to give the Saints the advantage. Ramirez has promised much since his arrival, without really catching fire as a Fantasy asset. With Adam Lallana seemingly sidelined for the foreseeable future, however, he looks to be a key figure in Southampton’s battle for survival and my yet draw our interest when fixtures fall kinder for Nigel Adkins’ men.

Jason Puncheon
A prime budget option, Puncheon has disappointed of late having looked to be making a mockery of his price tag. Nonetheless, the assist for tonight’s goal took him to six for the season and with two goals and a record that shows he’s started the last ten league matches, Puncheon is a reliable budget midfielder who offers attacking intent. He could yet show his worth if the Saints can improve their goal output.

The Southampton Defence
Prior to conceding three at Stoke, Nigel Adkins’ side had let in just four goals in six league outings. Tonight, the new resolute defence was again on show as Southampton worked tirelessly to stifle the Arsenal threat. Nathaniel Clyne missed out again with a knee problem but he and Jose Fonte are emerging as decent budget options in the light of the new emphasis on keeping things tight.

Going Down

Theo Walcott
While the Gunners man returned the assist for Do Prado’s own goal, Walcott suffered a miserable night back at his former club. Having seen little joy in the lone striker role, he was shifted to a wide role on the introduction of Oliver Giroud. Walcott cut a forlorn figure at the whistle and this was a far cry from the stunning display that helped see off Newcastle at the weekend.

Santi Cazorla
It’s just one assist in three matches now for the playmaker who has found himself dissolve into the background in Fantasy terms, as Walcott has come to the fore. Owners of Cazorla will surely have one eye on the double fixture in Gameweek 23 and hoping for a revival, while tonight’s showing from Walcott will perhaps do little to prompt the straight swap.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Long term Swansea's Davies is nice. Short term West Ham's Demel and O'Brien are nice too.

To a much lesser extent Harte and Mariappa for Reading are nailed on but should be 5th non-playing defenders only unless absolutely needed.

Reposting to get a couple of more opinion on this.

How about this as a wildcard team?

    Begovic, Bunn
Sagna, O’Brien, Cuellar, Davies, Wilson (from Stoke. When will he be back?)
    Mata, Michu, Bale, Fellaini, Walcott
    RVP, Ba, Lambert

If Ba goes to Chelsea, he will change to Berbatov and Sagna will be upgraded to Gibbs. If Wilson is not fit, i will keep Cameron

Stock check needs to be renamed "the kneejerk"....."Theo Walcott and Santi Cazorla on the down" Why? Because of 1 game of no double figure returns? Is that what it takes to be "on the up"?

Puncheon scored 5 points, as did Walcott in the same game. Yet, Puncheon is on the up after a run of nothingness and a rather lucky assist today. Fine. So Walcott is on the down following a gameweek of 26 points. Not to mention, Santi Cazorla had 23 just a few games ago, with an assist in between that, so what is it, up, down, up, down, up, down?

Silva has been consistently returning assists for the last 5 games, he is "on the up" now according the the first stock check....so if Silva blanks next week, is he automatically "on the down"?

Every single footballer is going to have an off-game, that shouldnt mean they are down and out, "stock check" should be taking into account price rises. Walcott has shot up in ownership after last weeks fantastic performance, but this week he is "on the down."

    Must get rid then! 😀

I don't actually mind the idea of a check after games, but how can Walcott be going down after a 5 point game, FOLLOWING a 26 point gameweek? OK he didnt get much up front like he did last week, and he moved out wide, but I fail to see how that means he is going down. It makes no sense at all.

Cazorla owners few weeks back got stunning returns, from a stunning player, and a stunning performance, he is the second highest scoring midfielder, arguably FIRST.....because Michu is playing up front. He returned an assist in the middle of those games, plucked a 2 today (like all players do from time to time) but he is "going down".

van Persie blanks sometimes, not a lot, but does that mean get rid and going down?

Marks logic makes sense to a certain extent. He isnt dropping due to a low return this week. It is due to the shift to RW for a large proportion of the match, his main appeal can be perceived to be due to OOP positioning.

Bale got a hat-trick from the wing the other day.

Cazorla got a hat-trick playing attacking mid.

Because they were playing in midfield, does that mean they are on the down?

I aint got anything against the people who run the site, but I'm sure it could be a little more revised than that.

What about a bit of middle ground?

We are talking about Walcott and not Bale though. His haul came from the CF role. That isnt quite true but lets accept it.

But I agree that there should really be a "stuck in limbo" category.

I agree to a certain extent, but Ginkapo Cazorla sits on 115 points total, second highest midfielder. And has double figured in a few games, and in others offered reasonable returns. I dont have Cazorla as I got rid pretty early on, but that hat trick (all be it, it was Reading) showed that he is a class player and he does have output. He has scored against big teams to. Liverpool, Spurs, Man United.

Fail to see how he is "going down" after a 2 game today.

Thats what we have been saying. But IMO he is the first.....Michu is a striker.

Cazorla plays midfield 99.99999% of the time, Michu has played a lot up front, a lot of returns have come when he has played so far up the pitch.

Michu returned nout this week and was 50/50......is he "going down"?

Looks very dodgy - a clear deflection outside the box - the rules states that if an opposing players touch outside the box alters the "intended destination", then there is no assist, seeing as the "intended destination" was the top corner, i expect the assist to be removed.....................an i own RVP so this is an unbiased opinion.............

The irony is, doing Puncheon/Suarez → Bale/Cole, this effectively also stopped me from doing McCartney → O'Brien.

I've effectively lost 30 points and something like 0.7M.

Next year I'll have to hire a bloody assistant manager over the holidays.

    Time to ditch Defoe?

Can't even get a hand in any of the 3 goals against one of the PL's weakest teams...

    DOOS

I know you think Collins shouldn't get his place back, but let's face it, he will, when he does who drops out Demel or Tomkins, think I am set on Mata over Caz, so I either have 1 less DGWer and bench Berba, or I get Pod and bench Michu or Mata

Tomkins will drop out. He is a CB and good bench cover as versatile and can even play defensive midfield. Deputised at RB too.

Demel is RB and will start - look at today's ratings - man of match - http://www.goal.com/en-my/match/81047/west-ham-united-vs-norwich-city/player-ratings

See I would have thought Reid would drop out, but in essence comes to the same conclusion. Demel should play both.

Reid has started every game this year

Here's the skinny, if I get Mata now i have 3 options

          a) sell for Caz after 1 week then look to get Mata back on wc

          b) Sell Berba to Pod and bench one of Mata, Michu or Fellaini

          c) keep and bench Berba (mci) and have 1 less DGWer

Dont bother with A. Caz is overrated.

Personally I would sell Michu. But thats just how I see things. But in actual fact it may be wisest to do c, or possibly b but not for a hit.

Yup, but can you spot them all. And also dont sell players that you already own and want long term.
