Southampton battle for a point at St Mary’s as Theo Walcott endures a frustrating evening on his return to his former stamping ground. Here’s the Stock Check on Saturday’s evening kick-off…

On the Up

Gaston Ramirez
Back in the side having been kept out of the heat of the Britannia battle, the Uruguayan fired home his third goal of the season to give the Saints the advantage. Ramirez has promised much since his arrival, without really catching fire as a Fantasy asset. With Adam Lallana seemingly sidelined for the foreseeable future, however, he looks to be a key figure in Southampton’s battle for survival and my yet draw our interest when fixtures fall kinder for Nigel Adkins’ men.

Jason Puncheon
A prime budget option, Puncheon has disappointed of late having looked to be making a mockery of his price tag. Nonetheless, the assist for tonight’s goal took him to six for the season and with two goals and a record that shows he’s started the last ten league matches, Puncheon is a reliable budget midfielder who offers attacking intent. He could yet show his worth if the Saints can improve their goal output.

The Southampton Defence
Prior to conceding three at Stoke, Nigel Adkins’ side had let in just four goals in six league outings. Tonight, the new resolute defence was again on show as Southampton worked tirelessly to stifle the Arsenal threat. Nathaniel Clyne missed out again with a knee problem but he and Jose Fonte are emerging as decent budget options in the light of the new emphasis on keeping things tight.

Going Down

Theo Walcott
While the Gunners man returned the assist for Do Prado’s own goal, Walcott suffered a miserable night back at his former club. Having seen little joy in the lone striker role, he was shifted to a wide role on the introduction of Oliver Giroud. Walcott cut a forlorn figure at the whistle and this was a far cry from the stunning display that helped see off Newcastle at the weekend.

Santi Cazorla
It’s just one assist in three matches now for the playmaker who has found himself dissolve into the background in Fantasy terms, as Walcott has come to the fore. Owners of Cazorla will surely have one eye on the double fixture in Gameweek 23 and hoping for a revival, while tonight’s showing from Walcott will perhaps do little to prompt the straight swap.

    Nelsen could become Clyne/Demel if they are fit/nailed on by the time I decide to w/c. He's just in the right now as a decent budget option. If/when Ba leaves for Arsenal or whatever he'll prob still score goals so unless he actually leaves the prem I'd wanna have him in there. Dzeko not nailed on enough for me imo.

    Santi has served me well but his numbers have really dropped of a cliff lately. Silva doesn't have as high an upside as the other MDers I've picked and Aguero doesn't seem to be the same player from last season. Its sad but I'd prefer Suarez at 10 mil over Aguero at 11. Walcott will not stay up front all the time and is a constant injury risk

        His shots on goal and shots on target have really fallen off a cliff lately. He's still creating a good number of chances but If I wanted an assist machine I'd get Silva/Pienaar etc. Your heavy hitter in MF really needs to off a good goal threat to show value at 9+ mil

        He did look tired and that might just be it as he's played all their games. After Mata got a rest he went on a tear and he will be one of the first names on the Team sheet so you are not worried about his mins. If I didn't need the funds and if Arsenals fixtures were so bad I'd prob hold him.

May have to do Mata > Bale (c) this week, only lose 0.2 and can preserve Theo and Santi for the double. Plus the big games are where Santi tends to shine.

Looking at WC plans I just really want to do HRK > Punch and downgrade Foster to fund a half decent defender I can play every week. Got about 10 points in two weeks for my whole defence, but it doesn't seem to matter.

      Past short term success isn't really a great way to predict furture, sustainable success. Look at his underline numbers and the likelyhood that he'll get a good number of mins in his position. Will Crouch really sit out most of the season?

Back at work today but feeling like I'm still in holiday mode, so posting here.. 🙂

My fantasy team somehow still competing in FPL Cup and my chance to win seems positive.

Opponent: Hazard + Sterling
Me: Mata + Suarez + GJ + 9pts

... unless Mata got rested and Hazard & Sterling are on scoresheet.. 😆

Last season, I was beaten in the cup on Gw25. Hope I can proceed further this year.

Phaze. The WC team you posted above has exactly the same front 8 as mine. You defence is much better though as you have more value. I'm thinking that if you get marveaux at 4.3m, it might still be worth it, even if he isn't nailed on from feb. I would think of him as a ferguson type signing who would warm the bench most of the time, but with massive potential upside if he is called upon. Problem is, if he does well this month, his price is sure to rocket, which would mean he would be too expensive for this role. Should I take a hit to get him in now, in case I do want him on my WC?

  I wouldn't take the hit to get him now if its just to prevent what might potentially happen. I'd try and build the team you want now on paper and then see how much wiggle room you'd have for him to risk. If he gets to the point of no return then revisit the issue.
  
  As you say, you'll prob never start him over the other 7 so I'd wouldn't feel comfitable taking a hit for someone just to be on the bench. Players like Robson-Kanu, Kacaniklic, will prob be decent bench fodder if he does a Sterling and just goes mad in price.

        Depends. If we keep ba, then i could see him winning a place in the starting 11 on the left side of a front 3.
        
        However, if we lose Ba, and get in Remy. I would expect Remy to play that position, with cisse in the middle (marveaux on bench).
        
        If he isn't first choice, then i would expect him to be first replacement for either the wide forwards, or Cabeye, so there should be plenty of opportunities for him, especially with our luck with injuries this year

        I agree with you take on the situation. I hope Ba does stay but If Pool or someone comes in with 75k a week I'm sure he'll walk. he thought of Cisse back as the central strike does does peak my interest though.
        
        Marveaux could be this seasons Siggy or McClean if he does lock down a play in the starting 11. T

    Naugton is cheap at 4.2 and playing well so will keep him. Dont know AVB options after BAE is fit but right now he is nailed on
    
    I might not replace Piennar with Marvx and keep him on bench and play 3-4-3 most of the time. Having both Hern and Piennar could back fire in making midfield decisions.
    
    What do you think otherwise

        Mid and defence look very exciting but losing Suarez right now is pretty scary. The dude is putting up huge shot numbers every week and could hit a few decent scores any given week. The only real + I see is that his next few fixtures are pretty horrible so might end up being a masterstroke to build that 2nd team now. I'm not sure which I like more though. Sorry if that wasn't helpful

        Defence looks bad. I atleast have 4 players for DGW currently and next would be Ridg to Gibbs. So i can fit in 5.
        
        Will wait to see how Fellani and Suarez play today. If they dont turn up good i will play the WC.
        
        Is Fell and Michu must in midfield. I dont think so esp when you have cheapers like Hernandez and Piennar in form

    I would be taking consecutive hits if I didn't wildcard to get rid of Benteke, Enrique, Defoe and redoing my defense if I didn't wildcard.
    
    It's worth it for me I reckon.

      Benteke and Defoe could be decent options up until the end of the month. Mrs China Mag got rid of Benteke yesterday, and already regrets it. Villa's fixtures are sick for the next 3, and they look like they might have halted their slide.
      
      Anyway, your WC is already in play. So I won't try and persuade you otherwise!
      
      There should be better options than mariappa and nelson for the price. Demel seems to be back in the team.
      
      If you had a cheeky punt on marveaux instead of noble, you could afford to stretch that little bit further on your budget defenders, for ones that might actually get a CS here and there. Davies, Turner, wilkinson, etc

  Azpi will face alot of rotation imo when Terry comes back. Despite the last few games I wouldn't want any Reading defenders in my W/C team. If you never plan to start Noble(you shouldn't) then you could go much cheaper and upgrade Mariappa.

    Keeping Noble for the double gameweek, then downgrading or swapping.
    
    Mariappa is bench fodder. Don't expect him to play. My strategy in FPL is to always have two bench fodder defenders who come on for the odd point or two in case one of my players gets injured or something.
    
    Noble + Berbatov works brilliant for the next two weeks.
    
    This week: Berbatov has WIG. Next week, Noble has double and Berb has mcy
    
    Roll a transfer, then get rid of both.
