Scouting The Doubles

Scouting the Doubles – West Ham

Having ran the rule over Arsenal ahead of the upcoming double Gameweek 23, we turn our attentions to West Ham as Sam Allardyce’s side prepare to welcome QPR to Upton Park before making their way to the Emirates the following Wednesday evening.

It’s also worth considering that, with clashes against Fulham, Swansea and Villa following their double, the Hammers’ short-term schedule is relatively kind, suggesting any acquisitions could be kept beyond for the next few matches until the fixtures stiffen again in Gameweek 27.

The Prospects

It’s fair to say the Hammers haven’t been in the best of form as we edge closer to the weekend deadline. Two wins in their last 10, with a single clean and 10 goals scored over that run hardly inspires confidence in Fantasy managers looking to invest in Allardyce’s main men. The visit of Harry Redknapp’s side looks the likeliest to provide us with a source of returns – the Hammers have picked up 18 of their 26 points at Upton Park and have notched twice against Liverpool and three times against Chelsea in recent matches. While QPR have impressed with back-to-back clean sheets in their last two, the Hammers will be confident of a clean sheet, bearing in mind their visitors have scored twice in the previous five.

On their travels, it’s been a disappointing story. Allardyce’s side have mustered a mere five goals in 10 road trips, though their 3-0 defeat at Sunderland last Saturday doesn’t reflect their resilient defensive displays away from Upton Park – they have conceded more than a single goal just four times. Arsenal have scored five or more on three occasions at the Emirates already, though, highlighting just why the likes of Theo Walcott has been drafted in by significant numbers ahead of the double.

The Likely Lads

Jussi Jaaskelainen is the Hammers’ top scoring FPL player this term with 80 points under his belt so far. A spate of recent injuries haven’t helped his chances of picking up a clean sheet, though; James Collins suffered a hamstring tear at the weekend, George McCartney is sidelined with a knee injury, while doubts remain over Joey O’Brien’s availability – if Allardyce’s side concede, the 5.3 priced stopper could have extra save points to boost his prospects.

Coming in at just 4.0, Guy Demel’s game time is benefitting from the injuries at the back. The Ivorian’s starting berth seems secure right now and is likely to appeal as a cut-price prospect, though it’s worth noting that Hammers chairman David Gold took to twitter to reveal O’Brien could be back in time for the QPR match – certainly, he offers greater potential of attacking returns than Demel, with a couple of goals, a pair of assists and eight bonus points accrued so far. At 4.5, his chances of recovery will be keenly monitored by Fantasy managers.

Top scorer for the London club with five goals to his name, Kevin Nolan has been off-form in recent weeks. The skipper notched in four of his first five home games but has now scored just once from Gameweek 9 onwards – hardly an inspiring statistic but at 6.5, over 8,000 have already snapped him up.

Mark Noble’s spot-kick duties and share of set-pieces has helped him rack up 69 points – only 10 less than Nolan. The 5.0 priced Noble missed the trip to Sunderland after picking up a “slight calf problem” ahead of the weekend but is expected to return – Noble has scored in two of his last three at home and could be worth considering as a budget option should he be passed fit; indeed, Wednesday’s FA Cup replay at Old Trafford may give us an early indication on his availability.

Carlton Cole finds his way into our consideration almost by default. The 4.9 priced forward has scored in two of his four home starts since deputising for the injured Andy Carroll and has now been named in the first XI for the last seven Gameweeks. Carroll is edging towards fitness, though, and while Allardyce admitted last Friday he expected him to be back in a fortnight’s time, an injury update on Tuesday revealed he was “still waiting” on the on-loan forward’s return. Marouane Chamakh climbed off the bench to make his debut at the Stadium of Light, though he is unavailable for the Arsenal game due to the conditions of his loan deal, while new boy Wellington Paulista also comes into the equation – although he can play through the middle, his versatility means he could be handed a wide role if Allardyce chooses to field him. Paulista has yet to be added to the FPL game.

Cheeky Punt

A pair of assists in his second debut for the Hammers brings Joe Cole onto Fantasy radars. The 5.6 priced midfielder supplied the crosses for each of James Collins’ goals in the 2-2 FA Cup draw with United and has started both games since moving back to the club earlier this month. Over 5,000 FPL managers have drafted him in for the double so far – he edged Ricardo Vaz Te onto the bench against the Black Cats, dimming the appeal of the Portuguese man as a forward alternative.

Should I bring in Demel & Podolski for a -4 hit and then wildcard after? Currently have Walcott & Sagna for DGW. Is that enough though?

    Current squad…
    Begovic – Federici
    Cameron – Cuellar – Clyne – Luiz – Sagna
    Michu – Walcott – Mata – Bale – Puncheon
    RVP – Ba – Berbatov

So, carrying on from the earlier post with the article. 4-2-3-1 seems to have taken over from 4-4-2 in the last 10 years or so, surely the next popular formation is 3-5-2 with wingbacks, similar to how Wigan and Juventus play. Seems reasonable given how many problems Wigan caused teams at the end of last year and how it can exploit 4-3-2-1 and 4-3-3. Maybe Mancini should have persisted with 3 at the back at City?

3-5-2, eh? Can get taken apart by good wingers. There are no teams in Italy that play via wings. Hence, why it flourished.

No question about it...I've been going on Blackburn and Liverpool for forty years...and believe it or not the best player i saw with my own eyes was Matt le Tiss..Blackburn played them in about 96...the first half he was crap...totally bland..The second half was like summat from mars...He scored goal of the season that day...Unbelievable... and i've seen an awful lot of world class players...

sad i watched a woeful chelski lose to swans in the cup tie last week as i was all set to do bale > mata(c) for the dgw and then mata > walcott(c) for the next dgw. chickened out and ended up keeping bale so now i can't get walcott in without dropping caz or bale. so my eye has moved to podolski. thinking of using my 2 free transfers to do tevez > pod and taarabt > nolan to give me 6 dgw players, then wildcard next week. wasn't planning on starting taarabt anyway and tevez could be under threat from aguero/dzeko pairing so seems sound?

if you had to chose just 1 striker for 11 million or less, who would you pick?

Still have a feeling that Suarez remains the best option. Aguero has yet to reproduce last season's form. Ba is no longer nailed on. Although clearly Sturridge will aid Liverpool, I'm beginning to wonder if he'll actually affect Suarez. Suarez will shoot when he has the opportunity, but now Sturridge is there maybe he'll just actually have someone who can finish off the chances he's so good at creating.

    What do people think?

Not saying Aguero over Suarez necessarily but given the 11m I'd get Aguero when fit because of ownership, strength of the team he plays for (Liverpool still prone to off days) and his potential to make up for lost time...I think he has a lot more to give this season given his track record. Plus maybe the Sturridge thing now that has me debating whether Suarez will get such a monopoly of chances. I also like that Aguero is on penalties (he has that over Suarez)

Suarez doesn't get enough respect on here. Given how he has played so far this season, am surprised. You should be thinking about Aguero + Suarez. Not Aguero or Suarez.

rvp ageuro suarez really affects other areas of your team. sturridge will do well IMO and is the better option if the 3m is spent wisely elsewhere

Not too sure about Sturridge what with Borini being back and all. Suarez played his best football for Ajax when he wasn't a striker. Scored a lot of goals too. Think he is still worth it.

I get you but my point was that Suarez should have become undroppable by now. Especially if you got him for less than 10mil. Personally am going for RVP - Suarez - Aguero with my WC but if you ask me to drop one, it is going to be Aguero.

I've never owned him, thus we're now talking about 0.5 million in difference after tonight. I think Sturridge can cover off Suarez better than Tevez/Dzeko can cover off Aguero

Apart from Suarez, for the other two positions in the front three at Liverpool, B-rod will rotate among Sturridge, Sterling, Borini, Downing. Which is why I don't trust Sturridge. Yet.

that is true. My wc left nothing in the bank. But Aguero's price drop helps me out a bit with my Nani punt as it'd cost me 0.1 to buy back whichever mid I sold for him so Aguero's fall pays for that.

I'll monitor how Sturridge and Suarez interact to see if there's a noticeable change in Suarez's stats. I'm still tempted to ditch 3-5-2 and have Sturridge over 1 of Fellaini or Theo.

On the subject of Kevin Nolan, can I make the point that his last "easy" home game was against Southampton on 20th Oct., when he scored 12pts. In home games before then, he scored 10, 8, 7, 2(Ars). Since that 12pts against Soton, his run of home games has been:

    MCI, STK, CHE, LIV, EVE

He didn't play in the last home game against Norwich, when WH scored 2. His average in "easy" home games this season is 9.25pts. This coming game against QPR will be his first "easy" home game since Oct 20th. Seriously think he's worth it for this DGW.

No, used to live in Liphook, Hampshire wheere the Forest Mere Spa is (now Champneys)

That's where he spent most of his time, but used to go to a pub called the Anchor. I was there the night a local twat hit him, was all over the tabloids the next day.

Saffe to say, 2 daays later, said twat got a kicking 😀

George Best was left bloodied when a man attacked him in his favourite drinking haunt yesterday. The footie legend was punched in the face at The Royal Anchor, Liphook, Hampshire.A customer said: "George was really shaken up and looked very wobbly.
