Scout Report – Loic Remy

QPR’s bid for Premier League survival was bolstered this afternoon by the arrival of Loic Remy from Marseille on a four-and-half-year contract. Earlier this month, the 26-year-old had seemed all set to move to Newcastle but has opted instead for Loftus Road as a result of Tony Fernandes’ powers of persuasion:

According to the club’s official website, Remy’s deal, while remaining undisclosed, is believed to be a club record fee – a clear sign of their willingness to splash the cash to steer clear of relegation. Subject to international clearance, the Frenchman is eligible for the weekend trip to West Ham and his arrival has clearly made R’s boss Harry Redknapp a happy man:

“I’m delighted to bring him in – he’s a great buy for us. I didn’t think we’d get him to be honest but Tony Fernandes worked ever so hard on this. He wouldn’t give up on it, and it’s great that we now have him here with us. He’s always been a player I’ve admired. I actually spent three or four hours with him last year so he knew what I thought of him, and I think that was important. He’s quick, can score goals and makes great runs. His movement is excellent. He’s got the potential to be a really outstanding striker.”

The Statistics

A product of the Lyon youth academy, Remy made his debut for the club as a 19-year-old in October 2006. Turning out just 12 times – with 11 of these from the bench – over the next couple of campaigns, he was loaned out to Lens in the middle of 2007/08 and, installed as a first-team regular, returned three goals and a couple of assists in 10 appearances.

The following season, Remy was transferred to Nice, where he started to make his mark in the French top flight. A total of 68 appearances harvested 26 goals and eight assists before he was snapped up by Marseille prior to the end of the summer 2010 transfer window. His first couple of seasons demonstrated Remy’s abilities – he racked up 27 goals and 10 assists from a total of 51 league starts and nine sub appearances before he fell out of favour this term. Over 14 league matches in 2012/13, he has managed just a single goal, though 12 of those appearances have come as a substitute. Remy has also turned out for the French national side on 17 occasions, producing four goals and an assist.

The Prospects

Given the lengths they have gone to in order to acquire the Frenchman’s services, it’s safe to say Remy is guaranteed a starting berth over the remaining 16 Gameweeks of the season. While the new boy is versatile enough to also play on either flank, a central role is expected as Redknapp looks to Remy to fire the R’s to safety. The Loftus Road outfit have improved at the back significantly in recent matches and have now conceded a single goal in their last four in all competitions but this upturn in resilience has come at a cost – two goals scored in their last five league matches is indicative of their toothless attack.

Redknapp has never been convinced by the lacklustre Djibril Cisse and although Jay Bothroyd and DJ Campbell have both returned to the club from loan spells, neither will threaten Remy’s game time. Considering the step up in solidity at the back, Redknapp looks likely to continue with a lone striker system and rely on Adel Taarabt to provide the creative spark, either from the left or a role in “the hole” behind Remy. The Moroccan has created a multitude of chances this term but due to poor finishing from others, has just three assists to his name – he has, however, earned 35 points in the last six Gameweeks and is starting to pick up in performance; if Remy can provide an end product, Taarabt’s mid-price appeal could be boosted.

Intriguingly, Remy started through the middle four times in all competitions for Marseille this season and produced two goals and an assist – if given the service and game time, he’s more than capable of producing. Strong, pacey and impressive in the air, his attributes seem ideal for the English top-flight – as Redknapp admitted yesterday, his attempts to acquire him for former club Tottenham were quelled only by a £20m price tag.

In Fantasy Premier League (FPL) terms, both Cisse and Bobby Zamora started the season at 6.5; an indication of Remy’s likely cost, with a ceiling of 7.0 expected. Having taken four points off Chelsea and Spurs in their last two, Redknapp’s side certainly have cause for optimism as they brace themselves for the visit of both Manchester clubs in the next five –currently sitting five points from safety, they also face Norwich and Swansea before United come calling in Gameweek 27.

With Fernandes expected to continue bankrolling the club’s spending spree before the winter window closes, Redknapp’s side looks set for further additions over the next fortnight as the first-team rapidly evolves under the new regime. As the R’s and Wigan both showed in the latter part of last season, there’s plenty of Fantasy potential near the bottom of the table when the pressure starts to mount – if the last few results are any indication, the Loftus Road outfit may well find themselves on Fantasy radars as Redknapp starts to build up momentum.

Some people really don't understand football. A caller on talksport phoned in to say Guardiola isn't all that and he inherited a great team.

He did alot more than inherit a team. Pep had vision and confidence in the Barcelona B players promoting the likes of Buquets and Pedro into the first team and bought key players Dani Alves and Pique. He got rid of disruptive players such as Eto'o and Deco and sold Ronaldinho, Zambrotta, Thuram and others.

Admittedly he had the core of Xavi, Iniesta, Messi to work with but that doesn't automatically win you trophies. The team were great to watch under Rijkaard and they won a league title and CL but Pep took it to another level winning everything in sight playing the best brand of football we had seen in a long time.

To think that any manager could have come in and won all those trophies with the 2008 Rijkaard squad is an absolute toolbag.

This. Not great buys in the market but the way he integreated youth players is commendable. Especially Busquets in place of Yaya Toure. Not to mention the work ethic. The distance Xavi and Iniesta covered in a match was insane.

Pep crystallized tiki-taka - Rijkaard's team were not playing it quite the way Barca are now. Pep took it to the extreme. Barcelona (and Spain whose nucleus is Barcelona) have captured the imagination because of the purity with which they play it.

Bit of background - it's easy to think Tevez is just bullsh*tting the legal process, but Tevez's English is known to be genuinely awful. In all his years here, he appears to have barely picked up any.

Pog or Henriquez would be my prefered options. In truth I hadn't realised how little it had to be, so if Anichebe is on the bench and just an emergency sub he's probably as good as the others.

    Bertrand: 3.9m.

Does Rafa-rotation make him a great pick? He's legible for CSs, and is often played in midfield. Anyone interested?

You could play him every game. If he plays, you have a Chelsea defender for 3.9m, if not, he goes to your bench for one of the other two rotating cheap defenders. What can go wrong? 🙂

Those legendary 1 point cameos. Although to be fair thats about the same as most of my defenders are getting me most weeks anyway. Consider him noted down for possible WC selection.

Yeah fair enough the CS potential is there were he to start games but I think between now and May you could accrue more points having similarly cheap defenders who plays every week and you don't have a defender slot taken up by a play who has good CS potential but rarely plays.

    Urp, lost on last page

One week punt lads, Podolski for the double or Lukaku up against a poor Villa team?

Also, in the same vein, would anyone consider Mata to Fellaini this week? I’ll get him back next week on my WC and would only lose 0.1?

Feel like Fellaini could score big against Southampton, but if Chelsea get anything against Arsenal, good chance Mata will be involved.

I’m going round in circles here methinks.

Bib theory, now brings you the all singing, all dancing, locker theory with peg theory waiting impatiently in the dressing room.
Mascot theory is rumoured to be the undercover version as interviews with the children due to accompany the players being carried out at playtime the day before the games.

All very interesting but I think I'll just wait for the team sheets for my inevitable disappointment.

Gonna preach against Cazorla some more. I don't advise anyone getting him in.

Wilshere's playing style does essentially consist of bombing straight through the areas Cazorla likes to drift around in looking for the ball. Cazorla is no longer the midfield general and his play is restricted because of it.

Avoid that 4 point hit, Walcott and Gibbs is enough.

I would say Caz is effective if Giroud plays. I know Walcott was there when he scored his hattrick but still. Giroud drops deep to hold play and Caz moves beyond him whereas Walcott is always on the shoulder of the last defender. Does anyone have access to average position maps to confirm/deny this?

I am assuming Ba won't start tonight and will start against Arsenal, since he's already scored twice against them just a few weeks ago.

That's why I was so against dropping him for Pod. Somehow I've convinced myself that I need Pod, even though it messes up my transfer plans for Suarez > Aguero & Ba > Sturridge. I'm a fool!

Aguero back in training....let the Dzeko and Tevez fire sale commence.

Mata is good and get him but long term the likes of Ba, Dzeko and Tevez will just leave you fretting ahead of team sheet time.

Keep an eye on Sturridge perhaps as an alternative.

Thanks. Missed the Aguero news but just checked it out. Don't mind fretting rotation as I am contemplating going eight deep up front and hoping to select the right squad (as long as that doesn't render me a drooling bib and fuzzy slipper theorizing madman) so maybe a stretch to Aguero and Lampard could be the way to go.

I made the above quote up, btw 😉

BUT... if the photo is to be believed (which it shouldn't), you'd be looking at...

      Cech (presumably)
      Ivanovich Cahill Terry Cole
      ------- Oscar Ramires/Frank/Luiz
      Marin Mata Bertrand
      ----------- Torres

I think Chelsea should offload Malouda in this January Window. Playing for the U-21s 🙂

Following on from my latest 'against the grain' post. Here is a possible Bertrand team:

    Begovic - Federici
    Baines - Evra - (Davies/Onuoha/Bertrand)
    Bale - Mata - Fellaini - (Puncheon/Taarabt)
Van Persie - Aguero - Sturridge

I tried to jump through the 'template' hoops to make it easier to digest but if you're having trouble just trade Taarabt for Michu and downgrade Baines in your head 🙂

    Feasible?

Your Bertrand theory is an interesting one... From the start of the season he'd have got you 6, 7, 1, 1, 1, 2, 1, 6, 2, 6, and been subbed out the rest of the time.

      3.3PPG.

That's great value. And value is the purpose of that spot after all, not points.

Which would be the third highest PPG for any 4.0m (or less) defender after Morrison and Harte.

Not sure I'd go for it myself, but it's certainly interesting.

And the majority of the cameos weren't under Rafa. He tends to play him for more minutes a go.

That is actually quite good but concerned about Sturridge gametime. Not sure about Bertrand. He might start one in four or five games.
