Scouting The Doubles

Scouting the Doubles – Liverpool

Back-to-back home clashes against West Brom and Swansea in the upcoming Gameweek have already earned Liverpool’s Fantasy assets significant investment. As mentioned in last night’s Digest, though, the following week’s blank also plays a part in our transfer policies prior to this Saturday’s deadline – load up on too many Liverpool and Swansea players and you’re left with a depleted squad for Gameweek 27, potentially facing points hits in order to field a starting XI. While Fantasy managers contemplate their tactics, we run the rule over the Reds:

The Prospects

Brendan Rodgers’ side prepare for the double Gameweek with the best home defensive record in the Premier League. Having conceded six goals in their first three games at Anfield, with City, Arsenal and United all notching twice, Liverpool have subsequently shipped just four goals in the following nine, with seven clean sheets accrued along the way. Their last six home games have harvested three or more goals on four occasions for the hosts – offering plenty potential at both ends of the pitch, then.

The Baggies arrive on Merseyside next Monday evening in dire away form – Steve Clarke’s side have lost five of their last six on the road and conceded two or more in all of those defeats. They have failed to score twice in that run, away to Arsenal and United and have notched once at Swansea and Everton – of the two fixtures, this certainly looks the most appetising in terms of goals for Liverpool.

Swansea look a tougher nut to crack. With just 10 goals conceded in 13 games on their travels, Michael Laudrup’s side are joint-top along with City for best away defence. The Swans have shipped just three goals in their last six away matches, producing three clean sheets, but have scored in only one of those six fixtures – suggesting that, while they may limit Liverpool’s attacking potential, they may struggle to break down the Reds’ rearguard.

The Likely Lads

Pepe Reina appears on the radar mainly due to the blank Gameweek 27. With the Spaniard on board, you could have five players for the double, subbing one out with your free transfer to leave the remaining four on the bench for Gameweek 27 – given there are doubts over Michel Vorm’s fitness for Swansea, Reina seems the safest keeper option, thus utilising all of your squad over the upcoming two Gameweeks.

Glen Johnson and Jose Enrique offer the best potential of points at both ends of the pitch. The full-backs have produced a goal and four assists apiece thus far, with Enrique slightly edging it by six bonus points to five. Having recently returned from a hamstring injury, Enrique made his first start since Gameweek 20 at City last weekend and although he was subbed off on 74 minutes, this was purely down to stamina issues as he continues to build up his match fitness. Having returned 4.2 points per game to Johnson’s 3.9 (albeit with a couple of appearances up front) Enrique’s kinder Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price tag of 5.7 to 6.4 could sway many.

After a couple of lacklustre campaigns, Steven Gerrard has returned to Fantasy form of old with a series of outstanding displays taking him to second in the FPL midfield standings. The Reds’ skipper has now scored or assisted in 10 of the last 12 Gameweeks; a clear sign of his consistency heading into the double. Gerrard has returned three goals, four assists and seven bonus points in his last four home matches and with spot-kick duties, in addition to a share of set-pieces and corners, an ownership of 10% is climbing steadily now.

Second top scoring FPL forward, Luis Suarez has also impressed in recent Anfield matches. The Uruguayan has produced four goals, an assist and eight bonus points over his last three home fixtures and is the most popular Liverpool player by some margin, with over 34% Fantasy managers already snapping him up. While Gerrard offers a viable armband alternative, a big Gameweek for Suarez could prove problematic for those who choose to overlook him, given his superior ownership. Despite a recent change in role, Suarez still seems to be delivering – he has scored in two of his three starts alongside Daniel Sturridge, either from the left in a 4-3-3 or in “the hole” in a 4-2-3-1.

The January move from Chelsea has had an immediate impact on Daniel Sturridge’s Fantasy potential. He’s scored or assisted in all four of his league appearances already, with goals against United and City highlighting his ability to deliver regardless of fixture. Sturridge’s appeal is also boosted by the fact he is cup-tied for Liverpool’s upcoming Europa League games against Zenit St Petersburg – the first leg, in Russia, comes three days after the West Brom game and three days before the Swansea fixture. Coming in at 7.6 in FPL to Suarez’s 10.7, he’s far more budget friendly, providing he shrugs off a thigh problem that has forced him out of England’s midweek friendly with Brazil.

Cheeky Punt

The last few matches have seen Jordan Henderson stake a claim for inclusion after a series of strong displays. The former Sunderland man has started five of the last six and has chipped in with a couple of goals, a pair of assists, four bonus points and two sets of double figures – for 5.3 in FPL, he’s proven decent value for money of late.

Stewart Downing has seemingly cemented a regular role under Rodgers over the past few months. While the likes of Raheem Sterling drift slightly out the picture, Downing has now started each of the last 10 and has produced attacking points in two of his last three home fixtures. Like Henderson, a modest price tag of 5.7 may appeal to those struggling to free up cash for big-hitters.

Liverpool on a strong upturn in form in general and he looks to be more consistent than Benteke already. Benteke is a good pick but Villa will have a good few slumps still and string together lots of blanks for him

Only ever had 2 biggies all season. The thing with 3 or more biggies it leaves you reluctant to sell for any value options coming up eg. Sissoko

Sissoko is the target. I'm looking at 2 options:

          3-5-2: Bale - Mata - Walcott - Gerrard - Sissoko, RVP - Suarez - (Anichebe)
          3-4-3: Bale - Mata - Walcott - Sissoko - (Guthrie), RVP - Studge - Rooney

First option also lets me get Evra whose recent points are ridiculous

I'd go the second one (obviously), and get Jevans over Evra. Rooney will outscore Gerrard by a fair bit I'd say, and Suarez and Sturridge pretty similar. Easy to get Aguero in too

It does. But potentially a few top of teams will have blanks then, City and Chelsea included. Have 5 playable defenders, and that week will be where not having the power 5 in midfield will come in handy too.

My take on the RVP debate, I have transferred him out based on factors
    Fixtures -
midweek friendly - should play min 45
everton home - 50/50 start - if he starts will be 5 games in 15 days considering he starts vs real he will
    madrid - start
    qpr away - start
    reading fa cup - rested
    norwich - 50/50
    madrid - start
    gw29 vs westham possible blank
gw30 enter back rvp or rooney

Surely based on all these factors guys who are considering rvp to suarez or someone else to upgrade elsewhere its seems the right decision. Most will be concerned by value rvp should drop abit during this time due to transfers out aswell.
Also in these games which games will you captain rvp? None for me so even if he does score well in one the damage should not be too bad
My personal opinion is i think by selling rvp im actually doing a good thing as most will stick and i can see some poor scores until gw30. Obviously time will tell

Look at his play, he is on most corners and now penalties for he league leaders. This is a team that has the potential to annihilate teams and even if benched RVP has the potential to score big. Time and again the benched RVP has eased himself onto the turf to prove the doubters wrong.

Feel free to ditch, but I wouldn't advise watching any Man Utd games...could get ugly.

Here's something I posted earlier. Take heed, you are not talking about a normal player here, you are talking about an FPL legend.

"Gameweek 7 was the last great push by RVP doubters to ditch the Dutchman. On the back of 1, 6, 5, 4 people were wondering if he was worth the money.

Well, bad news for those that did as the next three gameweeks RVP scored 11, 12, 8.

Fast forward to Gameweek 25-26 and there’s the same ditch RVP talk. Well I for one am sticking."

This is good. It just feels too early, he's got two blanks and people are talking about ditching? It's Robin Reliant! I've got no quarrels holding.

I did not ditch him based on 2 poor results, its just the fixtures and poss rotation etc plus the DGW even if he did well in the last 2 i would have still probably done rvp out until gw30

With almost any other player I'd agree but last season and this RVP is like Ronaldo was....incredible scoring rate.

I won't necessarily captain RVP, but ditching the most owned and best player in the FPL game is not something that will end well.

At the top of the tree it's all about minutes played...RVP isn't even in the top five....Walcott score a full point more per 90 mins played over the season...Mata scores 0.5 more points per 90 mins played..whilst Gerrard only scores 6.5 per 90 mins played but hs played every minute of every game....RVP is one of the best players but then again he playst just about all the time...Will that game time carry on is the bigger question....

It's a situation where you are more likely to lose ground than make any. If you have him and he blanks, almost everyone is going to suffer the same fate. If he scores well, you are going to slide. There is enough good budget options that money shouldn't be an issue here. Captain picks are slim IMO, and he is by far the most reliable. Also, 2 free transfers wasted to gt him in and out, with more than likely, other players needing swapped, hits are not going to help.

It's ballsy and I don't wish you well as I am keeping. I paid 13 for him, selling value 13.5. Would cost me extra .6 to get back. Think you only have extra .2 to pay on the selling value? Problem you have is that money is sitting in your bank, wasted maybe? Takes a few transfers or hits to redistribute that, then also freeing it up to get back? Time will tell mate, season defining move anyway imo

Might be handy to have some cover as Sturridge is injured and might not play 1 if not 2 for dgw and Enrique is only back from injury and not 100% fit and might play 180 min so ya go for it bring in Reina at least you will have 1 player that might play 180min

Everybody,. GW 29 issue. it is problem only for Chelsea and Arsenal, meaning Ful and Everton too. Those teams are the only that can have a blank due to Europe. All the others will play midweek so don't worry.

If Arsenal, Utd and Che go throw the next round in FA Cup that means:

        90% no Fulham v Chelsea
        90% no Arsenal v Everton
50% no West Ham v Man Utd (they have space but something with TV rights I presume.

I think its some anomoly to do with not playing mid week CL games while that CL period is going on....as you deduce if that is the case it probably is to do with TV rights.

As you say the main teams we need to worry about are
                  Fulham v Chelsea
                  Arsenal v Everton

Arsenal and Everton is at 99 per cent as both have to lose their FA cup ties...which is very unlikely. I'd pretty much consider that game off in gwk 29.

    Three out of the following?

    A) RVP --> Suarez, or
    B) Aguero --> Suarez
    C) Fellaini --> Michu
    D) Bale --> Gerrard
    E) Rafael --> Enrique (OR GJ if I ditch RVP)

    Currently on B, C and E.

    Begovic

    Enrique Davies Mariappa
    Walcott Gerrard Bale Fellaini
    Suarez RVP Podolski

    subs: Turnbull, Puncheon, Demel, Shaw

Have 1 free transfer, should I go with my planned Fellaini > Michu

Dont mind taking a 4 pt hit to make 2 transfers next week but relying on Demel and Shaw who are doubtful.

    Worry is Michu's high ownership.

But for the price of Demel and Shaw you can hardly find someone to match Michu's points in DGW. And Demel might be back for GW 27.

For a free transfer, it isn't the worst move. Tbh, I think you are well set as you are and would use that trade to start sorting out the fringe players, who look quite weak to me.

Hi McEwan, what transfers have you done this week? I am in a similar position (only having Davies) and plan to bring in Suarez and Gerrard for Aguero and Bale and then get Bale back next week.

Although tempted to get another Liverpool player in but don't think its worth the 8pt hit? What do you think?

Hi P.B. I jumped early onto Gerrard and Sturridge in for Silva and Fletcher. Did have enough £ to wait but thought .6 was a lot to miss out on. I'm not taking the hit for a further dgw player and it might not pay off. but have made my peace with it. Don't think the -4 plus the player I drop is going to break even. Also more than likely going to have to take a further hit on the other side to get a decent side out.

Hi guys please can you reply asap cos i have to make this decision today with gerrard price rise:

    Sczesny(Rudd)

Harte, Zabs, Baines ( Demel, Clyne)
Mata, Fella, Bale, Michu (VC) , Walcott
    Suarez(C) , Giroud ( Pogbren)
    2FT's

The way I see it i have two options, running over next two weeks :

A: GW26:Giroud to sturridge, Fella to gerrard
GW27: suarez to Rooney; michu to sissoko (-4pts) ( will play 4-4-2 that week)

B: GW26: Giroud to sturridge, Rudd to reina
GW27: michu to sissoko (no hits) (will play 4-5-1 that week with pog up by himself)

What do you guys think? , any better options ?? Thanks 🙂

Is Steven Taylor safe option for GW27. Better yet, is he nailed on?

No. Get Santon instead. Taylor's injury prone and a rotation risk,

      Not nailed on.

Has the place at the moment but could easily be replaced by Yanga Mbiwa soon.

      Go with Santon or Debuchy.

Inclined to agree with this. If you have nothing better to do and won't lose more than .2 value then maybe one for gerrard and then get them back the next week. But Bale and Wally are much better options than Gerrard LT.
