Scout Scribbles – Sissoko Relishing New Role

Newcastle’s new number 10 claims he is made for the English top flight. The clamour to shift Gareth Bale up front gathers momemtum. David Luiz is closing on a return to fitness, while Adam Le Fondre keeps patient as he waits on a shift in tactics at Reading….

Newcastle’s Moussa Sissoko has offered reassurance to those Fantasy managers who have already taken to the market to acquire his services. Talking on his impact over his first two matches in the stripes of Newcastle, Sissoko has expressed his joy at his role in the side having arrived on Tyneside from Toulouse…

“I am very happy to be in England. This championship is my style of play. The coach told me I was going to move to this position in the first two matches. It went well. So much the better for me and my team…Toulouse are a good team with quality players but going forward sometimes we experienced difficulties. English football is made for me. I’ve thought that for a while. I know I will often be in a position to score, just like last weekend….It is the same in the France team. I feel better and better. At first, I didn’t dare to take risks – I just did control and pass. Nowadays if I have to dribble, I do it.”

Indeed, from the interview in L’Equipe magazine, it’s clear that French coach Didier Deschamps has also noted Sissoko’s recent form as an attacking midfielder. When asked whether he was concerned that he was being forced to look overseas to find new talent for his squad, he singled out Sissoko’s recent impact, underlining the recent change in role as the key factor…

“It is a good thing…Take the example of Sissoko. Now he is a No 10. I could not imagine seeing him in such a position.”

It’s clear then that Fantasy managers are currently dealing with something of an unknown quantity with Sissoko. Played in a withdrawn, holding role at his former club, we have little data to go on other than his two performances so far for Newcastle. It must be said that those displays, as a very small sample, indicate that Sissoko will be a significant Fantasy talent. Further returns at Spurs this weekend, going into Newcastle’s favourable run of fixtures will surely see Sissoko’s stock and ownership continue to rise at pace. Almost 70,000 managers have acquired Sissoko so far this weeek following his brace at the weekend – only Liverpool’s assets have seen more activity and they have the double Gameweek in their favour.

Gareth Bale is another key fantasy target subject to a recent change of role. With Andre Villas-Boas mulling the idea of switching Bale to an advanced central role, or even deploying him as a striker, Wales’ boss, Chris Coleman, appears to be offering Bale the chance for a dress rehearsal. According to reports, Coleman is considering switching Bale up front for Wales for their forthcoming qualifiers with Scotland and Croatia…

“He can play anywhere cant he? Both flanks, down the middle and we even played him as a striker in the second half against Croatia. I saw the two centre-backs change their positions when we did that because they were petrified of his pace. Naturally, because he is a winger he wants to get the ball deep so he can run at players. But he can be just as devastating if you put the ball behind and have him running on to it.”

The talk of Bale being switched to a position that can maximise his goal threat, both for club and country, is clearly something that requires monitoring. The statistics show that Bale is amongst the most threatening players on show in the Premier League, although, from the flank, the majority of his efforts are fired from outside the box. Should he be granted the freedom to advance further up field and in central areas, his potential would surely enjoy a further boost which could prove significant over the remainder of the season. At Spurs, Jermain Defoe’s prognosis will prove vital to this – should the striker be ruled out for several months, Villas-Boas would have only Emmanuel Adebayor and Clint Dempsey as recognised strikers with Premier League experience – arguably players who offer very similar traits up top.

Moving to Stamford Bridge and Chelsea’s Demba Ba was confirmed as a doubt for the weekend clash with Wigan at Stamford Bridge having withdrawn from Senegal’s squad for their friendly with Guinea after suffering a broken nose in the defeat at Newcastle. Ba’s start against the Latics is clearly at risk, which could see Fernando Torres lead the attack in the weekend clash and in Thursday’s Europa League tie with Sparta Prague – Ba is cup tied in Europe. Elsewhere in the Chelsea camp, David Luiz remains a doubt for Brazil as they prepare to face England this evening. Luiz has missed Chelsea’s last two league encounters with an ankle injury, from the quotes from the Brazil camp, however, is clearly close to a return. Brazil’s coach, ‪Felipe Scolari‬, has pledged not to take any gambles with Luiz’s fitness…

“Regarding David Luiz he will (have to) pass another exam with our physios, then we will decide whether he will play or not…We will not take any risks with him.”

Reading’s Adam Le Fondre has drawn plaudits following a return of vital goals for the club in recent weeks – there’s even talk of an potential England call-up. The striker is still unable to establish a starting role in Brian McDermott’s side and, yesterday, spoke out on the situation, stating he was willing to bide his time…

“I’ve got to do what’s right for the team for the time being, until I can play in the team. Ever since I’ve come here I’ve wanted to play games – but the way things are going at the moment I’ve just got to bide my time and wait and see if we can play two up front.”

Unfortunately for Le Fondre, Reading’s recent form has coincided with a shift to a 4-5-1 formation which has seen Pavel Pogrebnyak impress as the lone striker. Le Fondre has proved effective coming from the bench late on and would seem set to continue in that role. That hasn’t perturbed Fantasy managers who have invested in the budget striker in their droves: Le Fondre, priced at 4.9 in the Fantasy Premier League game, drew 70,000 net transfers in the last Gameweek and has gained almost 20,000 new owners in this latest period.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Means there must be lots of members who entered the cup who aren't in the members league. Inscrutable sneaks! If it was members in the league cut off would be 62-63.

Random graphic of the day: a trailing 6-week average FPL score for the Power 5 plus Gerrard:

    http://i.imgur.com/Se8chKu.jpg?1

It shows how if you had a way of timing it, you could have successfully rotated from Bale to Mata to Fellaini to Michu to Gerrard to Mata/Walcott and maximised on their scoring streaks without having all of them in your team.

Probably confirms what we know intuitively, but it's still interesting to see it graphically.

Very nicely visualized. In practice, actually making those moves would have been far more difficult, it appears clear in hindsight. At the least you'd be likely yo miss the first week or two of their returns, you'd spend transfers swapping and in certain periods be unable to have them all when multiple ones were firing - take now.

    Question about RMT

How does it deal with new arrivals? e.g. Sissoko is predicted fairly modest returns despite having stats very similar to Fellaini's for the last two weeks.

Is it Bayesian? Are the projections from those stats being held back by conservative 'a priori' odds that will gradually become less important as new data is added?

    Or is that classified? 😉

This, CL is the only potential problem, but fitness wise a CB shouldn't have any problems playing all games (except maybe the occasional FA Cup rest). Hard to tell how SAF will approach it, but with Jones out I like Evans a lot.

If I go RVP and Gerrard I'd sell Gerrard and GJ for Bale and a decent defender the next week.
If I go Suarez and Bale I'd sell Suarez and GJ for probably Rooney or Aguero and a decent defender - plus obviously have captaincy choices again.

Manchester united rotation for champions league

    Fixtures
10 Feb Manchester united vs Everton (PL)
13 Feb Real Madrid vs Manchester united (CL)
18 Feb Manchester united vs Reading (FAC)
23 Feb QPR vs Manchester united (PL)
5 Mar Manchester united vs Real Madrid (CL)
9 Mar West Ham vs Manchester united (PL)

    Qustions?
Players lightly to be warped in cotton wool for CL ties?
What defensive line up do ye think Fergie will imply for games against Madrid?
Will RVP and Rafael start against Everton?
What midfield line up do ye think Fergie will imply for the games against Madrid?
Is it time to bid farewell to the flying Dutchman?
Is there a chance we might see RVP play again until the 9 Mar?

Seen as United have such a lead in the (PL) it worry’s me with a tight fixture list the old man will surely rest key assets what are your thoughts on this?

I think he’ll get a rest somewhere in between those fixtures, but it will be due to the normal rotation, and don’t think the points gap will be of any significance when establishing his rests. I think Rooney will be rested soon too, but buggered if i can call the games. RVP was rested against West Ham and Fulham in the FA cup, so i reckon Reading @ home will be when he gets rotated again. Also think he’ll be safe for Everton, but can see both RVP and Rooney getting rested @ home to Norwich before the crucial 2nd leg. When RVP is rested, he’ll still be on the bench though!

RVP and Rooney should both start in both Madrid ties. Rafael too, so he may get 1 rest against either Everton or more likely Norwich imo. Would hope Cleverley, Carrick and Kagawa all start both games too. Wingers horribly out of form. Wouldn't say bye to him for ever, but if you haven't got much profit locked in, then it may be worth keeping them buying back after GW 29. I'll definitely be keeping though, can't waste transfers when i need to try and get 11 out for the GW 27 and GW 29 blanks

Agree with Demi here. I'd be surprised if he was rested or Everton.
FA cup vs. Reading and one of QPR/Nor is where they are most likely to be rested.

Demi, your line up for the away tie? Talking only about the front 6.
I fancy SAF to go with RVP Roon and Chicha(diamond) but that might mean no space for Kagawa. I don't see the wingers playing either.

In the matches where RVP will be rested in the PL, he will still be on the bench. As seen in the match vs West Brom at home with Utd 1-0 up, Fergie threw him on and he scored. I have a feeling he will do the same in those games, if Utd are in front 2-0 by 60mins he will not bring him on. On the other hand, if he starts a match and they go ahead he will be subbed.Definitely wouldn't put RVP captain until after the Madrid matches!

Thanks, have both, and at the moment, I have Gerrard as captain.
Because of his form and attacking returns lately.

And that It's unsure how much Sturridge/Suarez' new role will affect Suarez' attacking returns.

Would be nice to discuss the selling points for captaining Suarez over Gerrard, as I think many have the same "problem" to choose the right captain for the DGW 🙂

    A
    Szczesny (Bunn)
    Johnson Davies Dawson
    Mata Walcott Bale Michu (Kebe)
    RVP Sturridge Aguero

+ Get to keep both RVP and Aguero
    + No hit next week
    + Good team next week
    - Only 4 DGW players
    - Going without the two most popular DGW players - Gerrard and Suarez
    - Lose Baines who has two top fixures coming up

    B)
    Reina
    Baines Davies Dawson
    Gerrard Mata Walcott Bale Michu
    RVP Sturridge (Pog)

    + 5 DGW players
    + Keep Baines
+ Gerrard is a good captain choice
    - Probable 4 point hit next week
    - Losing Aguero who has some great fixtures coming up.

A question on the RMT tool. GW27 it ranks Bego 3.25 and Bun 2.44, but says to bench Bego. I have Shawx also, which it suggests to play. I hadn't realised it took individual members of your squad into account/hedged its bets.

Does it take your squad composition into account, and if so, to what extent? Are ratings affected by what squad members you have, or just the benching order/captain choice?

    Hey guys, can I get a quick RMT for after this weekend? It's taken a lot of time to end up with this solution;
    Mignolet (Cerny)
Zabaleta | Samba | Evans (Onuoha | Harte)
Bale | Mata | Walcott | Sissoko (Puncheon)
    RVP | Rooney | Sturridge

    0.5 in the bank.

They have an avg of 58.2 ppg minus Captain. I set Sissoko's expected avg to 6 although it is 10 now.

Going Michu- and Fellaini-less will be a worry but Bale soothes the pain.

Onuoha is Evans' backup if he's rotated.

Dzeko is interesting for sure. It's just a matter of how much pain and knee jerk I'm willing to expose myself for. I'm a Liverpool fan and I've seen enough of Sturridge's qualities. Suarez will out score him, but by a mere 1 ppg avg...that's 12 points or so I guess.

I've noticed the opposite rally. But it's so frigging obvious what to do....get both for cyring out loud! They average 13.9ppg when they play together....but noooo. Everybody shouts Ageuro instead of one of them... well, enjoy Aguero's 4.3ppg.

      GW with RVP+Roo together; GW 7,8,9,10,11,13,14,15,16,17,18,24,25 = 13 games
      ROO; 11,14,1,2,2,6,2,16,12,7,1,13,8 = 95p, 7.3ppg with RVP / 6ppg overall
      RVP; 4,11,12,8,5,2,9,6,6,12,4,2,5 = 85p, 6.6ppg with ROO / 6.8ppg overall

Suggests they average 13.9ppg together, 6.95 ppg each when together
