Watchlist

The Watchlist – Arouna Kone

Last summer, two of La Liga’s top 10 scorers of 2011/12 made their way to England’s top-flight. While Michu has already surpassed his Rayo Vallecano tally of 15 goals and earned a place in over 50% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) teams, Arouna Kone hasn’t quite had the same impact. The Ivorian’s firepower was crucial to surprise-package Levante – mirroring the Spaniard’s 15-goal haul, he helped his side to a sixth place finish and persuaded Roberto Martinez to splash the cash for Wigan:

Initially, Kone’s home performances looked particularly reassuring and suggested the Latics forward was well worth considering as a mid-price Fantasy prospect. With attacking returns in five of his first six starts at the DW, Kone racked up three goals and three assists over those fixtures but since then, he’s drawn blanks in the last five in front of his own fans as Martinez’s men drift back into the drop zone.

Conversely, while his home displays have slumped, Kone’s form on the road has risen remarkably. Striking a rich source of consistency on his travels, he has produced in each of his last four away starts, harvesting four goals and a pair of assists – inclusive are double figure returns against fellow strugglers Villa and Reading. Indeed, his performances have been so pivotal that even after a four-match break for African Cup of Nations duties, he still comfortably remains Wigan’s top scoring player in FPL, with 102 points; while Shaun Maloney is next best on 86 points, Kone’s markedly superior average of 4.2 ppg to 3.3 sums up his importance.

Having also produced a couple of goals and assist in two FA Cup appearances since returning from South Africa last month, the Ivorian is our Latics Watchlist candidate of choice ahead of a crucial run of fixtures. Buoyed by their weekend thrashing of Everton in the FA Cup Sixth Round, Martinez’s men welcome Newcastle and Norwich to the DW next before making their way to QPR.

In addition to a favourable next three fixtures, Wigan also have a double Gameweek on the horizon. The showdown with West Brom, which was due to take place on the weekend of Gameweek 33 but was cancelled due to cup commitments has been shifted to Gameweek 36, affording Martinez’s men a pair of fixtures, with a home game against Swansea also taking place that week.

With trips to West Ham and West Brom and a home clash with Villa also on his agenda between now and the end of the season, a price of 6.5 in FPL could well appeal to those eyeing up an alternative to the likes of Rickie Lambert, Christian Benteke and Romelu Lukaku in the same price bracket. Having produced eight strikes and five assists so far, the Ivorian has played a part in over half the goals Wigan have scored when he’s been on the pitch – clearly, if Martinez is to engineer his seasonal scramble up the table, Kone will be key.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Definetely pointless I know, but tinkering which approach I take for gw33.
Which combo looks best for gw33 in todays knowledge?

    a) baines, kagawa, sturridge + 4 points

    b) clyne, pienaar, rooney + 4 points

    c) baines, remy, rooney

I really want Kone, and think he'll score we'll, but despite having 2 FTs, there are other areas of my team that need attention more than my front line of Suarez, Lambert, Fletcher

Fletcher to Kone seems a sideways move, and not justified on this week's fixtures even though I want him

Gotta keep for now (obviously!) but after that it's very tough to say given how many fixtures are still up in the air. I suspect i'd find it very hard to keep him through any potential blank GWs... unless of course he racks up 15 points against Reading!

I think that you'll have a much better idea what the answer is after Saturday's match. He could be gold dust for the rest of the season, but you never quite know with players who are past their peak ... sometimes they disappear from trace quite rapidly. If he doesn't have a good finish to the end of the season then Fergie is likely to ship him out.

I've been watching this 1 and a half hour Wayne Rooney video on YouTube. I'd love to have him in my team.

Feck RVP and get Rooney then? 🙁 🙂

Hmmmm really fancy a punt on Kagawa but he's not even certain to play, crazy after scoring a hat trick! Only Utd forward really on form is Welbeck, but you'd have to assume he'll revert back to the trusted combo of RvP and Rooney. So Welbeck left Nani/Young right? Valencia was awful vs Chelsea so surely he won't keep his place.

    Decisions.

      DDG
      Rafael Rio Vidic Evra
      Giggs Carrick
      Nani Kagawa Welbeck
      RvP(or)Rooney

based on form, is what Lord Ferg should play.

It's absolutely impossible to predict who he'll play. I think Rooney and RvP need to get their combo mojo back so i hope they both start with Kagawa playing too.

took a 12 point hit last week. kind of worked out. like a free wildcard. left me with:

    bunn/bego
    zab/baines/demel/davies/harte
    sissoko/coutinho/michu/fellaini/bale
    suarez/remy/benteke

as much as i like my "new-look" team and the differential offered, i'm bricking it about RVP. i'm going a bit all-out to catch first place in my league. I'd like to hold tight this week and have double transfer next week (?walcott/rvp) but may rue it. any thoughts appreciated. thanks

Is it too risky getting Rooney in this week, just before and international break?

I'd need to take a hit to get RVP. Alternatively it might be the time to invest in Kagawa.

Hey guys, really need your help on this one..

Do you think it's worth it for me to do Davies --> Baines for a 4 pt hit?

I know Baines have got City coming up and it's unlikely he will keep a clean sheet but this transfer is for long term until at least the DGW 33. Also, I feel that it is time to lose Davies.

    Cheers! 🙂
