Watchlist

The Watchlist – Dimitar Berbatov

As the season heats up and the battle to beat the drop intensifies, it shouldn’t really surprise us that the most cool and collected player in the Premier League has led by example. With goals in each of the previous three Gameweeks, Dimitar Berbatov has engineered a climb up the climb that sees Fulham sit in tenth spot – just four points behind Swansea with a game in hand.

Reunited with former Spurs boss Martin Jol last summer, Berbatov’s impact was immediate. A brace on his first start against West Brom was followed by an assist away to Wigan – with maximum Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus in both fixtures, he rocketed up in ownership from 6.9 to 7.3 over the space of a fortnight. Handed the role of lone forward, with Bryan Ruiz pulling the strings behind him, the Bulgarian’s form continued – three goals and a pair of assists over his next four appearances followed, with a 16 point haul in a Gameweek 11 draw at the Emirates proving the highlight of his season so far.

A hamstring injury to Ruiz in the Gameweek 12 defeat at home to Sunderland proved Berbatov’s undoing, though. The Costa Rican’s absence forced Jol into deploying Berbatov deeper, lessening his attacking potential, with the likes of Hugo Rodallega or Mladen Petric afforded the chance to lead the line instead. As a result, he failed to register a single goal or assist over Ruiz’s six matches on the sidelines – it’s no coincidence his strike partner’s Gameweek 19 return saw Berbatov in the points once again, picking up a goal and maximum bonus in a home draw with Southampton.

Since Ruiz’s return to the Cottagers’ first XI, Berbatov has hit the occasional stumbling block, though. This has mainly been down to his manager’s tinkering – Jol’s decision to play Ruiz on the right flank in a handful of fixtures resulted in a withdrawn role once again for the Bulgarian but, as his side edged ever-nearer to the drop zone, Jol’s decision to reinstate Ruiz behind Berbatov up top has proved pivotal.

Further analysing his recent form, Berbatov has now notched in four of his last five matches; the one game he failed to find the net – away to Norwich in Gameweek 26 – was due to Jol’s decision to move Ruiz out wide and drop the Bulgarian deeper. With Ashkan Dejagah now preferred on the flank, Fulham finally have a settled side and are reaping the benefits; only United have bettered or equalled their points haul over the last three matches.

Up next for the Cottagers is a home clash against basement-dwellers QPR and with a double Gameweek 33 affording a trip to fourth-bottom Villa and home clash against Chelsea, the prospect for points looks enticing. After that, Berbatov faces three home games in four (ARS, REA, LIV) and with such a kindly FPL price of 6.9, the bandwagon is underway, with the Bulgarian already acquiring more than 20,000 new owners – more than double the tally of all but one forward since the end of the previous Gameweek.

Certainly, with a 30 point lead over any other Fulham outfield player, his importance to the Cottagers cause is obvious, while a lowly ownership of just over 6% highlights his differential appeal and offers an in-form mid-price alternative to the likes of Christian Benteke, Rickie Lambert, Arouna Kone and Romelu Lukaku over the last few matches of the season.

It's all about the long term. a wc in GW32 means that, all being well I can save transfer in 33 when I should get a monster haul and have 2 FTs in 34. I can then keep carrying one over as I take out GW33 doubles and bring in GW36 doublers

still not convinced by this plan, the benefit is only a free transfer in the end, there is a good chance your normal gw32 will score more than the one you wildcard in

but it's a transfer that can be made for free rather than taking a hit. I'll only have Fellaini (suspended) and Anichebe cheap from Everton anyway. I'm not sure Arsenal's fixture is a bad as you think it is

i have heard on hear im not a member that brom concede alot of chances i think, i dont want to get too jumped into stats etc never have, just to me west brom away is not an easy fixture on paper, i certainly wont feel confident having 3 arsenal players in that match, although only one of them needs to score/asisst and you will have done okay to get to the monster gw33

Sturridge appears to have been assembled from the parts they salvaged when they went over the wreckage of Paul McGrath, Marcelino, Darren Anderton and Michael Owen. Good when he plays though.

Lambert is up and down and I only seem to have owned him on the down parts.

Maybe Paul is tricking me with his silver-tongued magic.

      Aye, it's certianly an option.

Question is, would you rather have a combination of 2 strikers with 2 (3 if the player you sell has a blank) extra games total between them at the cost of 2 transfers, or just keep your current strikers?

GW32, set your team up with about 8 GW33 doublers and the rest with good SGW fixtures and/or a DGW to come. This way you can save in GW33, then carry a FT over each week until 36 when by which time you should have 8 or 9 again

It's not that simple though as the main United attacking targets are strikers, whereas the main Chelsea ones are midfielders.

For that reason, along with the fact they all carry rotation problems this gameweek, I'm not making plans for Chelsea or United attack in the DGW since I already have RVP. I might bring in a defender from either side once we know for sure though.

    RMT for Green Windmill * = potentially problematic, & = DGW :

    Bego Federici

    Enrique Jevans*& *Cameron Pearce Davies&

    Maloney& Walcott& Sissoko Bale Snodgrass

    RVP* Sturridge* Lambert

Possible moves over the next few GWs:

Save FT this week, pending Sturridge injury news
    Sissoko/Snodgrass > Fellaini
    Jevans/Cameron > Mertesacker/Distin
    Sturridge > Berbatov

Quick analysis of the England team:
      Hart somehow out of form
Walker worst form in 2,5 seasons
Smalling not playing for his club
Lescott not playing for his club
Baines in the form of his life
Ox not playing regularly for his club
      Lampard decent form
Cleverley not playing regularly for his club
      Young not even close
Rooney just back from injury, good form though
Defoe just back from injury, mediocre form

      Nice one Hodgson ...

I can't imagine many of this 11 starting the more important England game.

    Hi guys

    Mignolet Federici
Evans J Jose Enrique Wilson Martin R Harte
    Bale Fellaini Mata Silva Puncheon
    Lambert Suarez Van Persie

    Harte – Jenkinson
    Silva – Santi Caz
    Puncheon – Schneiderlin

8 points hit. Have 9 starters otherwise and 4 maybes (mata, j evans, harte, puncheon)
Will now have 11 starters and 2 maybes (evans and mata)

Pros : Harte and Puncheon not playing at the moment
    1 and maybe 2 arsenal DGW'ers for 33

    Cons : 8 point hit

I'm leaning towards doing this at the moment. 8 points is a lot though, it will be hard to click that button. Have zero in the bank, any other transfer suggestions? When I get in short termers like JEnkinson historically it's never worked out for me. I'm getting in Caz this week no matter what

    Shrewd business? Or flawed thinking

Silva > Caz and nothing else. 4 maybes is better than a hit for Jenkinson or Schneiderlin IMO

        Or Mata > Caz even.

I I just do 1 transfer I will have this team

        Mig
Enrique, Wilson, Martin (if im lucky Evans)
Bale, Caz, (if i'm lucky mata)
        Lambert, Suarez, RVP

9 starters. If im lucky 10. But pretty sure evans will be on the bench and Mata I have no idea what Benitez will do. I'm sure Harte will play no part, Puncheon might get a few minutes at the end but will not start. This is the problem im facing!

Mata > Caz means 2 more players for sure (Silva and Caz) and 11 players, no?

If you're concerned about losing Mata, you can always get him back (for a hit if you need to). Spending 4 points on a player in who is more likely to repay it (i.e. Mata or another a DGW mid) is better than taking a hit for Schneiderlin or a hit for defender who isn't might lose his spot before the DGW.

Sorry I thought you wrote Silva - Caz. Ill play around with this. Im worried about no Chelsea cover going forward then. I may gamble that Chelsea don't win the replay, which I think Utd will anyway. The bookies have it exactly 50-50

I could do Evans Mig and Silva out for Caz, DDW and Reither. That would give me 3 extra DGW'ers if Utd win as well as an extra player this week and a better chance of a keeper CS this week.

8 points should be fully repayed minimum with hopefully some extra then. Ill keep tinkering. Thanks for your brain stimulators!

It says he is likely to miss the Reading match, but in the sentence above it says the club are hoping it's only a minor injury. How do they come to this conclusion?

Me neither. Goal.com said Wenger sold him to a Qatari princess so he wouldn't have been training anyway. Useless tabloid hacks
