Fantasy Premier League Focus

After another interruption brought on by internationals, we’re finally edging towards the weekend’s deadline once again. As always, our regular look at the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game casts an eye over the upper echelons in the Scout League and assesses the goings-on in the transfer market, which seems to have somewhat slowed over the past fortnight:

Scout League Standings

Sanjeev Karki remains at the top of the Scout League after a 39 point haul last time out. His decision to captain Juan Mata harvested a 12 point haul, while Christian Benteke and David Luiz were his only other performers in a Gameweek that many of us were delighted to draw a line under. Nevertheless, Sanjeev sits in second place in the overall rankings on 1,948 points.

Paul O Gorman climbed to second in the Scout League courtesy of a 49 point haul in Gameweek 30. Despite a four-point armband haul from Robin Van Persie, Paul’s rise in the ranking was thanks to clean sheets from Stoke pair Asmir Begovic and Marc Wilson, while Leighton Baines also returned defensive points in Everton’s 2-0 win over City. Mata and Rickie Lambert also produced as Paul moved to fifth overall on 1,936 points.

Kelvin Travers slips to third, then, after registering 35 points. United’s David De Gea joined Baines in producing defensive returns, while Mata was the only player to pick up attacking points for Kelvin. In the overall rankings, however, he moves up to seventh spot on 1,935 points.

Site regular Evs is a non-mover in fourth spot, having also scored 35 points in the previous Gameweek. Another of our featured players to suffer from Van Persie’s blank against Reading, Evs had three defensive players – De Gea, Wilson and Baines – to thank for over half his points. He is fifteenth in the overall standings, having accrued 1,923 points so far.

Finally, Dan Jones completes the top five. Dan – another site regular who posts under the name “Jonah” – racked up 40 points last time, with Baines and Lambert’s hauls helped by Cesar Azpilicueta and Daniel Sturridge. Dan is now up to nineteenth spot in the overall ranking but still has his wildcard left to play; somehow, that may just come in handy round about Gameweek 33 time…

The efforts of our top five keep Fantasy Football Scout at the top of the best leagues. Once again, the FFS Members sits in second spot – just 4.4 points behind. Evs is second in that league, with world number one Julian Zipparo leading the way. He scored 30 points in Gameweek 30, with Mata and Lambert the only players to produce; nonetheless, Julian still has a 15 point advantage at the top of the overall standings and sits on 1,963 points.

Market Trends

Either through injury or rotation, a lack of consistency in goal has affected many a team right now and the transfer market reflects Fantasy managers’ thinking – the security of starts offered by David De Gea, Asmir Begovic and Mark Schwarzer makes them the top three keepers, with the Australian also benefitting from a double Gameweek 33. Indeed, the double has persuaded many to load up on Arsenal defenders despite Arsene Wenger’s recent rotation policy – Nacho Monreal is far and away the most sought-after option at the back, with over 19,000 snapping up the left-back, while Per Mertesacker (13,000) and Carl Jenkinson (11,000) have also acquired plenty new owners. Fulham’s Sascha Riether mirrors the latter’s popularity after producing attacking returns and bonus in each of his last three.

In midfield, Santi Cazorla lead the way. Over 38,000 managers have snapped up the Spaniard – with a home game against Reading and a double Gameweek 33 around the corner, interest has only increased after Theo Walcott’s groin injury. Eden Hazard’s 14 point haul against West Ham last time out has persuaded over 29,000 to take the plunge – with a double Gameweek 33 on the cards if Chelsea lose to United in the cup, his appeal will surely increase.

Everton’s Leon Osman is also proving popular. Goals in two of his last three, allied with a two-match suspension for both Marouane Fellaini and Steven Pienaar has seen 26,000 Fantasy managers snap him up – his highest tally of transfers in by some distance. Three goals in six games have seen Morgan Schneiderlin’s cut-price appeal convince over 19,000 new owners, while Liverpool new boy Philippe Coutinho has earned over 24,000 transfers in after impressing since arriving from Inter.

Up top, it’s all about Dimitar Berbatov. Four goals in his last five appearances have earned the Bulgarian over 35,000 new owners – not far off double any other forward; factor in an impending double Gameweek 33 and a price tag of 7.0 and it’s easy to see why. Wayne Rooney is next in line with almost 15,000 picking up the United man as he continues to keep Robin Van Persie in the shade, while over 13,000 have acquired Christian Benteke, Olivier Giroud and Luis Suarez, though the latter is just a single caution away from an automatic two-match ban. Rickie Lambert’s mid-price appeal and remarkable consistency has earned him 12,000+ transfers in.

In terms of transfers out, Marouane Fellaini’s two-match suspension has seen over 96,000 part company with the Everton man. Michu’s poor form make him second on the unwanted list; having scored in just one of his last 10 appearances, and with a blank Gameweek 33 also to consider, the Spaniard has departed over 27,000 teams over the past fortnight. Steven Pienaar’s ban has also seen the South African sent packing by 24,000+, while injuries picked up on international duty have lost Theo Walcott and Steven Fletcher 23,000 and 26,000 owners respectively.

Robin Van Persie has also been shipped out by plenty – over 23,000 have got rid of the Dutchman, with a budget-friendly trade to Rooney holding appeal. Jason Puncheon and Branislav Ivanovic have tumbled in popularity due to a recent downturn in game time – Puncheon has started just one of the last four under Southampton new boss Mauricio Pochettino, while Ivanovic has failed to feature in the last three in all competitions for Chelsea.

The team with 2 FT and 2.5m in the bank. I don't want to use it on defensive transfer because of too much uncertain facts at the back. I don't want to move my Che and Utd assets before the FA CUP. So that leaves me with Walcott only. I can't save it because I will lose it. The thinking is Walcott to ➡ Caz.

    Bego eve, Bunn (red card)
Jevans sun, Turner wig, Davies TOT
Mata sot Lamps sot Walcott RDG (injured) Bale swa
RVP sun Lambert CHE Sturridge avl
bench: Sissoko city, Cameron eve, Harte ars

Obviously my defense needs working out but I believe Santi is a must this week. I will deal with the Che and Utd assets next week with the 2 FT.

Good or bad, please opinion. Or I should just play Siss, keep Walcott and do a defensive transfer?
    Thanks

I like to keep Lambo also had Rdg next week. Davies is best 4.0m defender out there. Also had double in GW 36. And I don't think Mert is nailed on and been burnt by Ars defense before. And don't want to buy Mert when Sagna/ Jenk/ Fab could be bargains.

Thanks Demba I might consider selling Cameron.

But both options means no Santi and no captain this week. Bad move IMO bad situation to be in!

problem with sagna, jenk, fab is they cheap but also big risk of whether they start.

Reading have new manager, could be different reading side.

I understand what you say, I am in a similar position with no obvious captain choice

If you think Santi is a must, Walcott out is basically your only option as Mata looks likely to have a DGW and Bale is Bale.

Personally I don't think he's an absolute must although he should be in the points. I would bring in a DGW defender but it looks too unclear unless you want to punt on Jenks, or Fab for Bunn. TBH it might not be so bad to sell Evans for Baines and get him in for the DGW now with a great fixture at home to Stoke. United have City next and it's unclear whether Evans has any chance of playing both DGW matches.

I don't like Mert I discussed that above. And Isacki could be right Jevans out and no Santi. Hmmm.. But isn't Baines too expensive? IF I do that transfer I can't do the RVP and Rooney combo if appear they have a double. All my cash will be in Baines. Damn difficult situation to be in. And I think Jevans will start no Vidic and Rio can play 2 games in 2 days and one of them/ or both will surely play the Che game.

Yeah it's difficult. I'm fairly sure Evans will start one DGW game, but I think there's a big risk he might not start both with Rio and Vidic (and Smalling) hanging around. Dunno if Jones will recover in time to be a threat or if he's still deployed at CB.

If you mean the Sunderland game yeah Evans should probably start the game, though both Vidic and Rio have had a nice 2-week international rest.

I wouldn't touch RVP & Rooney in the DGW myself - can see Chicarito and Welbeck easily wasting your money.

Can't get this crazy 8pt hit out of my head.... 😐

    Davies to Mert
    Sissoko to Cazorla
    RVP to Tevez

Means I can bench Wally and have 3 Ars in place for dgw so saves a transfer later. RVP may not start, Sissoko and Davies are unlikely to do anything this week anyway....

When you think about it seems less crazy by the minute.... I think

Davies... yeah I can't see a CS unless Spurs really mess it up. They've got the motivation of CL to win which Swansea don't have.
Sissoko... could do something against crappy City though you'd expect Cazorla to outscore him.
RVP... might not play and looking tired.

So the three you're selling look acceptable enough, I think the tie breaker is Tevez. Not too confident in him. City are awful.

For me what this all comes down to is, will United beat Chelsea in the FA Cup replay.

I've worked on the assumption they are likelier to win. I have Rooney and DDG from United while I only have Mata from Chelsea. If I was confident Chelsea would beat United, I would sell Mata this week because he'd lose his DGW and probably get Caz.

The games have definitely been the best rivalry of the season for me, in technical ability I think Chelsea's three attacking midfielders beast United when they get going, but United have the better forwards and mentality IMO.

Really close to call, I'd go 60-40 in favour of United and that's not enough by which to make transfers.

60 - 40 seems about right this Chelsea team seems to be too inconsistant Mata is the only one you can really rely on to deliever week in week out. Hazard and Oscar need to be playing through the middle to be at their best + torres and ba are misfiring

Cheers, Mata is certainly one of the only viable Chelsea DGW candidates. Do think Lampard has made himself a big option (IMO he's taking shots that Mata might have) and Hazard is just in such ludicrously good form.

That's something I was kind of considering at the start of the week but it seems a shame to miss out on bringing in a guaranteed Arsenal DGW player when they have Reading at home.

        My team is
        DDG
        Johnson Wilson Davies
        Michu Mata Bale Walcott
        Rooney Benteke Suarez (C)

Mate, Man Utd win is essential. If Chelsea win I'm screwed. I will probably announce my retirement from FPL.

Either way I don't think I will sell Mata as

      a) Man Utd win = DGW
      b) Chelsea win = I have to keep a guy who is going to play (unlike Bale/Michu/Puncheon)

Yeah an SGW is better than a DGW so I can see why you'd keep Mata, though knowing Benitez you can't even count on the little genius to start. In your situation it seems hard to sell Mata.

Well seeing as the game is against Spurs I'd expect him to start (as it's a crucial game for both) So I think I can rest easy about that (I hope)

I only have Mata from Chelsea, I just want that Man utd win because I'm without RVP and it's just so complicated if Chelsea win. Getting in Azpi/Hazard/Lampard is way easier than me trying to get RVP. In fact if Man Utd have a DGW I may take the massive risk of not having RVP altogether (as the changes I'd have to make would decimate my team). So I'd just captain Rooney and pray! 🙂

Full backs a big concern... City don't tend to play with too much width is the only saving grace but our record there is awful.

Anybody else got the Ming/Fed combo?

Awful week this week, even if Fed is fit. I think I am going to grimly hang in there. What are other sufferers doing?

Thoughts on Walcott to Lampard or Yaya? Or just bench Walcott and play Maloney...

Here's a tricky one, start Maloney (NOR) or Sissoko (mci)?

For the record, I'd love it on Monday if you mock me for being grossly incorrect.

Noted, I wouldn't do that though. Anyone else think that I should go with Maloney?
