Scout Picks

Scout Picks – Gameweek 37

Upcoming Cup finals for City and Chelsea affect our thinking this week, with rest and rotation a real concern as Roberto Mancini and Rafa Benitez look to end the season with silverware. Everton and United feature prominently as David Moyes and Sir Alex Ferguson prepare for their final home games in charge, while Arsenal’s Emirates showdown with Wigan earns a couple of Gunners a place in our penultimate Scout Picks of the 2012/13 campaign:

Simon Mignolet gets the nod between the sticks for Sunderland’s home showdown with Southampton. Given their vastly superior goal difference over Wigan, a win for the Black Cats would help clinch survival for another season and with the Saints failing to score in each of their last three, Paolo Di Canio’s side will be confident of nullifying their opponents’ danger.

We’ve opted for Leighton Baines ahead of David Moyes’ last game in front of the Goodison faithful. The Toffees have been in stunning defensive form in recent matches, delivering six clean sheets in the last eight, and welcome West Ham side with 11 goals on the road all season – with free-kicks and penalties also in his locker, Baines could be set to plunder the points yet again.

Rafael’s suspension should afford Phil Jones the chance to shift to right-back for United’s home clash against Swansea. Jones’ all-round potential has harvested a couple of assists and two clean sheets over the last six matches and his raids down the flank are set to trouble the Swans time and again on Sunday, as Sir Alex Ferguson seeks to deliver the points in his last home game in charge of the champions.

We were all set to hand Glen Johnson a place in the XI but Brendan Rodgers’ hint at rotation earlier today was enough to scare us away. Instead, we turn to Arsenal’s Per Mertesacker ahead of Tuesday’s home clash with Wigan. The German has supplemented three clean sheets in his last four with a goal and maximum bonus and has found the net more often this season than the rest of his defensive team mates combined.

Confirmed as a starter for Chelsea’s trip to Villa by Rafa Benitez,Frank Lampard is handed a rare Scout Pick outing. The Blues boss is expected to make changes ahead of Wednesday’s Europa League final with Benfica and while a repeat of the 8-0 Stamford Bridge annihilation back in Gameweek 18 won’t be on the cards, Villa’s record of 20 games without a clean sheet bodes well for Lampard’s chances of equalling Bobby Tambling’s scoring record tomorrow afternoon.

He may have suffered a rare blank in Wednesday’s draw at Chelsea but Gareth Bale’s outstanding form is impossible to overlook. A trip to Stoke is far from straightforward but with eight of his 13 sets of double figures arriving on the road already, the Tottenham talisman will roll up to the Britannia in buoyant mood, with Tony Pulis’ side managing just two clean sheets in the last 11 in front of their own fans.

We’re backing Marouane Fellaini to return to form after a run of five back-to-back blanks for Everton. The Belgian returned to his usual advanced berth behind Victor Anichebe in last week’s Merseyside derby and will relish the prospect of a physical battle against the West Ham backline as the Toffees go in search of a sixth straight home win this weekend.

With goals in each of his last couple of appearances, Theo Walcott has sparked into life once again. Arsenal’s final home game of the season sees Wigan roll up to the Emirates next Tuesday and with the Latics decimated by injuries to their first-team regulars at the back, Walcott looks a real captaincy contender as Arsene Wenger’s side try to keep their push for a top four finish on track.

Robin Van Persie will be looking to hand Sir Alex Ferguson reason to be cheerful in his last match in charge at Old Trafford on Sunday. The Dutchman had seemed susceptible to rotation over United’s final couple of matches but Ferguson will want to serve up a performance in front of his own fans after announcing his decision to retire earlier this week. With Wayne Rooney slapping in another transfer request, the United boss will surely hand “Robin Reliant” further chance to boost his 25-goal haul against Michael Laudrup’s Swansea.

Daniel Sturridge gets the nod for Liverpool’s trip to Fulham this weekend. Martin Jol’s side have capitulated in recent weeks, managing a single points from the last six fixtures, and welcome the Reds to the Cottages having just shipped four at home to Reading. Having scored or assisted in five or his six away appearances since arriving on Merseyside in January, Sturridge’s form on the road could reap reward once again.

Our final forward slot goes to City’s Edin Dzeko. Roberto Mancini looks likely to start with Sergio Aguero and Carlos Tevez in Saturday’s FA Cup final and with changes aplenty expected for Tuesday’s trip to Reading, the Bosnian could well be handed a starting role at the Madejski – as he showed last week against West Brom, his eye for goal remains firmly intact.

Russell Martin looks a strong cut-price defensive option as Norwich welcome West Brom to Carrow Road. Aside from their recent win at Southampton, the Baggies have been particularly toothless on their travels in of late and with three goals and a pair of assists to his name already this name, the 4.2 priced right-back offers plenty going forward.

Shifted to the role in “the hole” behind Danny Graham in light of Stephane Sessegnon’s suspension, Adam Johnson will be key for Sunderland this weekend. With Steven Fletcher injured and Craig Gardner also banned, Paolo Di Canio is without his three top scorers for the visit of Southampton – the former City winger will be desperate to add to his tally of five goals and eight assists and shoot the Black Cats to safety.

Kevin Mirallas makes the bench for Everton’s home game with West Ham. The Belgian has scored or assisted in four of his last six at Goodison and with seven bonus points also thrown in across those fixtures, has offered a strong source of consistency in front of his own fans in recent matches.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Begovic (Robles)
Zabaleta – Luiz – Vertonghen – “Enrique” (Pearce)
Bale – Walcott – Fellaini – Mata (Townsend)
    RvP – Tevez – “Defoe”

Take a 4-point hit and do Defoe ->> Sturridge ? Opinion please.

A: Take hit. Play Sturridge and bench Enrique. (or others?)
B: No hit. Choose to play either Defoe (stk) or Enrique (ful) or Townsend (NEW).

Getting caught up in the rat race in China doesn’t look like much fun. So competitive at a young age to get exam results. Millionaire tutors driving about in Lamborghini’s because students are throwing money at him for additional learning.

And all they are doing is frantically cramming for exams then forgetting what they learn. I guess that’s what a population of 1.3 billion will do to you.

Millionaire tutors? May have to head to China myself 😀

I agree but I frankly think most education systems are broken. An example, I have just spent the last 5 months studying and working 12 hours a day 7 days a week because my college course split my speciality so pathetically that 1st semester I had about 5 hours of college a week compared to this semester in which I've had 35 - 40 hours. Added on top of this was the fact that we only do exams at Summer, have been enrolled in a number of pointless classes, have had to do huge levels of work for a continuous assessment which was still going on only a week before our exams start. The result? Me and the entire class no longer give a flying f**k about our speciality or the exams as the past 5 months have been horrendously tough, enough to suck any enjoyment out of the course.

China is a special case, the children have yet to really rebel against authority (because obviously it's such an authoritarian state that teenage rebellion hardly exists.) Apologies for the rant. 😀

That sounds rough mate. A broken system by the sounds of it and once any enjoyment goes it's difficult to get through it. How long you got left? Where do you study?

Unfortunately it has been. We've had words with the course directors and the whole faculty so it won't happen again, they unfortunately have just gotten it desperately wrong this year. Last exam is tomorrow morning, you can see my lack of enthusiasm by preferring to be here discussing these things instead of working 😀 I'm in Trinity College Dublin, I have been nothing but disappointed with it unfortunately :/

The parallel process is much sicker here (in western countries) where the avenues to success are more ossified, and students are jockeying for position in a more settled and thus less flexible system. Here the exams actually have less impact on success, because the machinery for ensuring the success of all is well-developed, and those with the best resources tend to end up on top.

I do agree about the resources EJ, the systems are rigid. I do believe that a lot of them are in desperate need of a radical overhaul. A friend of mine for example is an excellent lab worker so continuous assessment always gives her a lot of marks. However she struggles greatly with exam nerves and as such often does quite poorly. To look at her overall grade you would think she is an average student when in reality she is one of the most intelligent people I've ever met.

Yeah, I know very well that exams are a poor, or unfair, measure of merit. Universities are beginning to realise that more diverse and periodiv forms of assessment are necessary properly to reflect ability, knowledge, and potential, but professional bodies lag far behind, and universities have been slow to change.

Very true, there is a set way of doing things and it seems that only when the larger institutions (I believe Harvard have made a switch to online lectures?) that others follow. Even the whole lecturing system, the didactic approach does not suit some. I am an example of that, I learn much better from reading books and gain very little from lectures yet if I do not show up to a lecture (often because the lecturer is too poor to be of any real merit) people assume I am a waster. The change certainly is slow.

What brought this on? Btw, I don't think population alone explains it. China is going through what a lot of western countries went through in the early 20th century, namely a rapid social transition from agrarian to industrial/information society, and a consequently Darwinian mosh-pit to decide who are the winners and losers. Grim, but in a way this is the time of greatest opportunity there, and some of those miserable crammers will grab top spots in the transformed society. Just sayin'.

I agree with the transition but is there not more of a cultural push on children to essentially become academic robots (no offence or anything like that intended)? So when the crammers do wind up in the high positions all they have ever known is that level of work and therefore pass that on to younger generations?

Quite. That happens all the time, in Western countries too. I suppose I'm saying it's even worse in western countries, because it's just a habit, instead of a more fierce, rough-and-tumble hunger games. As society becomes more industiralised and specialised, it tends to glorify and habitualise focused, specialised, high-intensity work as the ticket to affluence.

Ah now that makes a lot of sense. You are very right in that aspect, I have unfortunately witnessed it all through my education. I knew one young guy that was in a private, fee paying school (to the tune of about 7-8 grand a year) yet was in grinds for every single one of his subjects. It really is a bad situation.

So the scouts predict that Marin starts in the hole against Villa? What or where did anyone get this information? Is it based on anything? What has Marin done to warrant a start in the hole in a big game they need to avoid defeat in to secure top 4?

      Pretty silly tbh.

It's going to be Moses, Oscar, and one of Mata/Hazard behind Ba tomorrow.

It's a very odd line-up the Scouts have given us there. And there's not a whole lot of explanation for it (apart from the obvious Europa-rotation). Personally think Mata will start though.

ML leader had Aguero, Tevez & Defoe last week and he’s done 2 transfers

    Maloney > Lamps
gives 7.5 to play with if sell Tevez
    Tevez > Sturridge

    looks good to me

If you're neck and neck with your rival, would you captain a player you both have (Bale/Walcott), or a player he doesn't have (RVP)?

Pretty confident he'll captain Walcott, maybe Bale. I'm very tempted to captain RVP, but if he draws a blank then I'll lose the mini-league.

And who will score the most points this week, Left or Right?

      Bunn (WBA) vs DDG (SWA)
      Dawson (sto) vs Kompany (rea)
      Sagna (WIG) vs Mert (WIG)
      Clyne (sun) vs Enrique (ful)
      Mata (avl) vs Hazard (avl)
      RVP vs Ben Arfa
We both have Walcott, Bale, Fellaini, Tevez and Sturridge

In the event of players not playing, the benches are as follows:
      Boruc (sun) vs Federici (MCI)
      Maloney (ars) vs Kone (ars)
      Boyce (ars) vs Demel (eve)
      Both have Davies

    Hart
    Baines Martin Clyne
    Bale Walcott Lampard Maloney
    RVP Sturridge Tevez

    Federici Wilson Davies Sissoko

Captain selection is a fricking nightmare this week, completely split down the middle between RVP and Walcott...

    Statement from Wayne Rooney

There’s a load of rubbish being written about me changing twitter bio saying I have deleted Manchester United from it.
I have never deleted Manchester United from the bio whatever the papers are saying because it was never on there.
All that happened was that I was asked by Nike to add @nikeuk to it – the same as many other sportspeople they sponsor.
Funny, no-one’s written about that though!
That change was made THREE weeks ago and yet people are talking about it as if its something that was put up yesterday..
