Scout Report- Fernando Amorebieta

Martin Jol moved quickly into the transfer market last week, as the Fulham boss snapped up centre-half Fernando Amorebieta from Athletic Bilbao on a four-year deal. The 28-year-old moves to Craven Cottage on a free transfer and looks likely to partner Brede Hangeland in the heart of Jol’s back-four over the season ahead:

With midfielder Derek Boateng also arriving under freedom of contract, the Cottagers boss is wasting little time in addressing a poor end to the previous campaign which harvested a mere four points from the final eight Gameweeks. Speaking to the Fulham official website upon completion of the deal, Amorebieta revealed:

“I’m delighted to have signed a four-year deal with Fulham and I’m looking forward to competing in the Barclays Premier League next season. I’m impressed with the talent already at the Club and I look forward to meeting the players for pre-season training in July.”

The Statistics

Starting his player career at Athletic’s feeder club, Baskonia, in the 2003-04 campaign, Amorebieta then stepped up to the club’s reserved side, Bilbao Athletic, the following year before finally making his first-team debut in 2005-06. The 6 foot 4 centre-half spent the next eight seasons at the La Liga outfit, making a total of 195 appearances and producing three goals and three assists, though it is his disciplinary record which really catches the eye. A real no-nonsense approach at the back has seen Amorebieta register an astonishing 75 yellows and 11 red cards over his time in Spain’s top-flight, with plenty of suspensions picked up over his time in Bilbao.

On the international stage, he represented Spain Under 19s on four occasions and was also called up to the senior side by Vincente Del Bosque, though never made it past bench-warming duties. As a result, he was free to represent his native Venezuela and has turned out eight times, scoring one goal – the winner in a World Cup qualifier against Argentina last October.

The Prospects

Certainly, there’s no doubting Amorebieta’s talents. Comfortable in possession, his ability to pick out a pass from deep and prowess in the air have caught the eye of Arsenal and Liverpool in previous years but his temperament has proven enough of a deterrent for any would-be suitors.

Mainly left-footed, his arrival should see Hangeland switch to the right of the central defensive pairing and knock both Philippe Senderos and Aaron Hughes further down the pecking order. With Jol also snapping up Sascha Riether on a permanent deal after last term’s successful loan spell, it only leaves question marks over the first-choice left-back area, with John Arne-Riise and Kieran Richardson alternating over the last few games of 2012/13.

With eight clean sheets accrued last term, Jol’s backline are unlikely to either fall or rise in price across the Fantasy games, keeping their initial costs at the mid-price level. Despite a likely starting price of around the 5.0 mark in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Amorebieta may find it difficult to attract early investors unless he can chip in with some attacking returns. Hangeland, for example, finished a full 60 points behind Mark Schwarzer last time out after failing to produce a goal or assist, while the Australian’s save points and spot-kick heroics earned him sixth spot in the FPL keeper standings, by comparison.

As Schwarzer hints at an exit from the Cottage, however, Jol looks to have further rebuilding on his summer agenda. Fantasy managers are likely to approach with plenty apprehension, then, with many more than happy to hold fire and assess just whether Amorebieta can rein in his reputation as a card magnet before contemplating any possible acquisition.

Hangeland is an FPL write off. He is never returning to that solid season he has a few years back. Hangeland, N'Zogbia, Defoe are players you should never be fooled into buying again.

        😯

Colo is 31 and Taylor is 27 - not exactly creaking in terms of centre backs! That said, Colo could leave and Yanga-Mbiwa could nail down a spot.

If he played in the whole behind RVP he could do really well. Don't see that happening though with Rooney, Welbeck, Hernandez, Kagawa all playing around that position. He's surely play deep alongside Carrick, Cleverley etc. Also I doubt he'd be nailed on.

I like Fellaini, but he wouldn't suit man Utd's positional play. they rotate strikers pretty much with both wingers and the hole inhabiter all taking it in turns to be the most attacking player. Fellaini is a player without the required mobility or technique to play this multi-role system.

Not good. Cant imagine he will play second striker at all. Centre mid for Everton I thought him clumsy and not much threat.

Its a position Rooney couldnt nail down last yr.

I dont think Fellaini is technically a good enough player for United aside from FPL. Would a Bayern / Borussia / Real / Barca entertain signing him?

Most likely to play as a deep midfielder, alongside Carrick, if he goes. Could also play more forward as a plan B. I think he would be a good addition but most United fans don't seem to think he is a "United" player.

I'm happy with the signing of Kolo Toure, he's a leader which is something we lack with Carragher leaving our ranks, he's captained Arsenal, Man City and Ivory Coast, he's never finished below 4th place in the premier league and has won the league with his previous 3 club teams, he has a wealth of experience and has taken a significant wage cut, I presume he'll only be back up as we will land another centre back, I only doubt his desire...

We 'should' be. Will we? Only time will tell.

We still need a few more players to add to the squad as well as 2 or 3 first team players. But when you look at all these managerial changes and possible transfers, you never know what might happen!

I'm not so convinced, we haven't proved capable of showing up when it matters yet and Rodgers' signings have been questionable (everyone and their mother knew the potential and capabilities of Coutinho and Sturridge). I can't see us investing in that much quality to be honest, we'll be the same next year in my opinion, maybe 6th.

Wow, some of you lot are being really harsh on Fellaini. I worry for Moyes, every move he makes is going to be scrutinized by you lot. Fellaini would be a good signing, and is a good man to have aside Carrick. Don't know about his potential in Europe but you make him sound like someone who has no technique.

    Thats just ridiculous.

I'm ok with you thinking that. But Fellaini is a good player. He's certainly not a bad signing.

Strootman is the gamble, Fellaini is the safe bet. He's the kind of player that wont excite everyone but will do more than enough.

Fair enough. I'm just saying he's not all heading ability. He's a good player of the ball and has really good shooting technique as well.

Also whats your issue with clevs? He's good too!

I just think we could do with someone a bit different in there with Carrick, more of a ball player than Fellaini, someone who could play some of the European big boys out of the park.

I have no issue with Cleverley, I think he just needs to get used to playing consistently week in week out, he's not young any more.

LR, I've run out of room to reply.

I think it helped where you had such a really good start. Nevertheless, hats off to you for ending where you did as I think the competition was much harder this year, particularly if you got to the top 1k.

At 32 years old and almost 32 stone I hope Toure is backup for a new CB or just a squad player.

    Undoubtedly brings massive experience though.

Still hopeful of Papadopolous @ £10-12m.

Skrtel possibly off to join Rafa and obviously Carra retired.

Still Test players. Deadline for registering squads was Sunday though, so they should pop up soon.

Should update the rest of the page as well though, the Tipster still shows players for the Europa League semi-finals, but the Prizes-section has changed from showing Europa League prizes to only showing that dummy text Lorem ipsum.. 😛
