Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Matthew Lowton

Snapped up from Sheffield United last summer, Matthew Lowton fitted the bill as part of Paul Lambert’s restructuring program at Aston Villa. Young, ambitious but with plenty yet to prove at the top level, the right-back arrived from Bramall Lane for a fee of around £3m and was immediately installed as a key component in Lambert’s first XI.

As the season unfolded, the defensive problems that plagued Lambert at Norwich continued to blight Villa’s backline. An attack-minded philosophy looked naïve at times as the midlands outfit found themselves on the wrong end of some serious goings-over – shipping five to City, four at home to Spurs and eight against Chelsea, Villa leaked 69 goals over the course of the campaign and managed five clean sheets all season, conceding in every match from Gameweek 17 onwards.

Key Factors

  • Few defenders, if any, afford the same consistency of starts as the Villa right-back. Lowton missed just one match all season – the Gameweek 37 loss at Chelsea – after being subbed off early in the previous league fixture and was fourth overall defender in terms of minutes played. Lambert’s faith in the former Blades man is unquestioned – if he’s fit, he should start every match for Villa.

  • After altering formation on a number of occasions last term, Lambert finally seems to have struck upon a 4-3-3 as his preferred option. As the Villa boss tinkered with his tactics in order to get the best out of his charges, he trialled three, four and five-man backlines with varying degrees of success – as he steels himself for a second season in charge, a greater degree of consistency looks key to Villa’s improvement under the Scot.

  • Villa’s form across the final few months of 2012/13 affords reason for optimism. The midlands side registered five wins and a couple of draws in their last 10 games, tasting defeat only to United, Chelsea and Liverpool and scoring 21 goals over that period – given that they had won five of their opening 28 matches, scoring 26 times, their improvement is marked.

  • Lowton also stepped as the season went on – he managed a single goal in the first 24 Gameweeks but followed that up with a goal and four assists in his final 13 appearances, with his penchant for a spectacular strike from distance always a threat. A 4-3-3 formation looks tailor-made for his talents – with a couple of defensive midfielder sitting deep, he should be afforded plenty licence to bomb forward and supply width from deep.

  • Let’s face it – Villa’s defence can barely get any worse. From a Fantasy perspective, then, a price rise for Lowton looks unlikely across the games – if he continues at last term’s initial 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he has the potential to be a real bargain, providing Lambert can instill a little extra resilience at the back next time round.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Reputation should be based on previous performance rather than saying nice things.

If it was based on past performance at fantasy football then you would have a much better idea who to take notice of.
ie someone who knew what they talking about , rather than some fawning toadie.

I believe the rep system is to help new users and casuals such as myself who only occasionally pop in on the comments to stick around a bit longer and not get scared off. And at the end of the day, more casuals mean more site views and memberships, which can only be good for the site.

Basing the rep system on past FPL performances might just create an elitist troupe around the place and further discourage the non regular posters from sticking around long term.

I think quality content is the best all round option and a sensible approach.

    Hello everyone,

Would anyone be interested in some very very stats and maths heavy posts re. Points returns and player performances, in order to predict points returns?

    Hello All,

There are a lot of broad similarities between finance and fantasy football. Both can be modeled based on risk: ie. reward vs investment. FPL is essentially a more constrained, regulated and ultimately simpler version of the financial world. There are fewer variables, and these can be modeled much more easily.

Some basic techniques like simple linear regression seem to work effectively in predicting performance stats - I assumed this in some way has gone towards the 'explosion imminent' articles which I have seen mentioned on here. If it wasn't done already, multiple linear regression and multi variate regression could be used to predict points returns and performance respectively, in a quite crude manner.

There are plenty of more advanced methods in the world of financial mathematics that may be particularly useful - risk analysis, quantitative analysis and technical analysis all throw out some interesting results.

A month of very relaxed coding could put together a few models in C++ Matlab and Excel in time for the start of the season. Of course, going on last years data will may results in a less reliable model than one built on performance from the season underway. This was meant to be a personal project, but if there is interest - and mods allow it - I can post results on here every month or so.

Does membership give you last seasons returns and opta and FPL stats? Is anyone interested? And am I allowed to post information based on data only available to members?

Of course, I could omit the opta stats and harvest just fpl returns from the site giving a rather more basic, but perhaps ultimately more effective model.

    Thanks for reading.

The members site has the opta stats but not FPL stats. Mark doesn't like huge amounts of data from the members area being copied across (the opta data isn't cheap to buy) but I think a small amount is generally allowed.

Hi, you might be interested to know a few individuals on here and other FPL sites have over the past few seasons started to take this approach, similar to Baseball analysis I suppose. I know on here, Chris Glover who is a contributor and has his own blog does allot in this area. Might be worth your time to have a look around and get in contact with him or one of the other sites if your interested in pursuing this area.

I have posted about it a bit before, it is certainly an interesting area and the membership area of this site has all sorts of stats tools to help, along with other sites out on the net. Not sure if linking to them is appropriate on here, but if you head over the Chris Glovers blog who is already associated with this place you'll find all you need 🙂

Hope this helps and good luck 🙂

    Hi Chu,

The fantasy game for the 2013/14 Premier League season should be live mid to late July.

Each season you enter a new team with a £100.0m budget to select players from again. None of your budget or points will be carried over. If you register from the same account then your previous seasons scores are stored on the game under the 'View Gameweek history' page.

If any leagues you have entered this year are renewed next season then you will be automatically entered if you register from the same account as this season.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,
    Fantasy Premier League Support

Ok, that’s the first bit of form to compare the groups and Group B winners Spain are three goals superior to the team who came within seconds of winning Group A. In my form book, this suggests to me that that Spain are a 2 goal + better side than Italy. Spain also beat Holland by three goals but that was pretty much a non event between two teams who had already qualified and Holland played their second 11. Their respective results against Germany are a much clearer indication of their comparative merits and it suggests there’s not a lot between them.

My point? Holland at 9/4 MUST be backed.
