Pre-Season

Sleeper – Sergio Aguero

There was no better way for Sergio Aguero to stay in the forefront of our Fantasy thinking ahead of last season’s kick-off. The Argentine’s last-gasp title-winning goal against QPR will go down in legend as one of the Premier League’s defining moments – with Martin Tyler’s stunned reaction providing a worthy accompaniment from the commentary box, it was the stuff that Sky Sports marketing men must have dreamed of:

His contribution that day summed up Aguero’s debut season at the Etihad. Arriving from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2011, his impact was instant from the moment he climbed off the bench to bag a brace in a home rout of Swansea on the opening Gameweek of the campaign. By the time his sweetly-struck strike whistled past Rob Green to clinch the crown, Aguero had racked up 23 goals, nine assists and 30 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points, for a total of 211 points.

Highly priced across the Fantasy games prior to the previous season’s kick-off, Aguero’s exploits ensured he remained a popular pick but the Argentine lasted just 13 minutes of the season opener against Southampton before sustaining a knee injury. With Carlos Tevez affording Fantasy managers a cheaper route into Roberto Mancini’s attack, Aguero was shipped out by almost half a million FPL managers by the time Gameweek 3 arrived and although he returned to the first-team fold by the end of September, the previous season’s momentum was never recaptured.

Despite supplementing 22 league starts with eight sub appearances, Aguero mustered a mere 12 goals as City’s failed to recapture the attacking swagger that wrestled the title from United so spectacularly. With three assists and 16 FPL bonus points also accrued, the Argentine proved a hugely frustrating Fantasy performer and managed just three sets of double figures over the course of the campaign. Finishing on 121 points – 90 less than his first term on these shores – Aguero’s tally was bettered by both Tevez (169) and Edin Dzeko (130) as his season, like City’s, stuttered to a meek conclusion.

The Prospects

With Mancini now gone and Manuel Pellegrini finally installed in the hot seat, City’s acquisition of Fernandinho and Jesus Navas suggests they are determined to go on the offensive a little more often next time round. Having scored 93 goals in their title-winning campaign, they found the net just 66 times last term as opponents found a way of dealing with Mancini’s somewhat one-paced approach.

The new man in charge is likely to opt for a 4-2-2-2 or 4-2-3-1 formation, though either way Aguero looks key to City’s fortunes, while the likes of Dzeko could be offloaded as Pellegrini opts for improved mobility up top. A price drop across the Fantasy games for the former Atletico man seems inevitable after his disappointing showing – having started last term at 11.5, a slip to 11.0 looks realistic and while Tevez may begin cheaper at 10.0 or 10.5, his compatriot’s keen eye for goal holds the greater potential.

With David Silva, Samir Nasri, Yaya Toure and Navas all vying for attention in the City midfield, Aguero seems the safest – and most explosive – Etihad option on next term’s agenda, providing Pellegrini can reignite their attacking drive. In terms of frontline options, Robin Van Persie’s exploits on the other side of Manchester is likely to earn the Dutchman a 13.5 price tag and with many Fantasy managers looking to cut corners with their initial budgets, Aguero could well prove a tempting alternative if Wednesday’s fixture list reveal an opening spell that falls kindly in City’s favour.

  1. Mid Price Mids v Top Defenders

Contrasting the value of big hitting defenders and mid price midfielders

    Average of top 10 Defenders 6.0-6.5: 129.6

Average of top 10 Midfielders 6.5 and below: 138.4
(Not included Michu or Fellaini as they would skew the results too much)

Conclusion: Mid price midfielders are better value than mid price defenders

Very tempting to have the likes of Luiz, Vertonghen, Ivanonic etc in your team but players like Snodgrass, Walters, Nolan often do better over the course of a season and its almost easier to use transfers to change to those mid price options in form.

... but the defenders are usually from better teams and based on fixtures should get more points short term. This is okay if you're sticking with the same team all season but with constant changes you'll find more value in the defenders in my opinion. ; Great comment.

I have tended to go for 1 heavy hitting defender and the rest cheap rotating chumps, and try to have a bit more in the midfield

Really interesting analysis, especially the ease which you can move Mids around. Defensive transfers always feel like such a waste.

      Yep, I agree.

Personally, I like one decent defender then 3 other cheapies 4.5 - 5.0m at some solid mid table teams and the 5th defender is unusually 4m bench fodder from promoted side.

All this obviously depends on whose about (hidden gems) etc.

Those 4.0 defenders always seem like a good idea at the time but so rarely do they ever provide a source of value that I'm considering going with out

Ok if they are nailed on at a club, as rotated the other 3 with your big hitter.

You can use him them if injury comes, or one of the promoted sides are doing bette than expecting at the back.

No doubt provide outstanding value if you find a gem e.g. Ben Davies and its almost necessary to have at least 1 to give extra cash for the rest of the team but its just my past experience with the likes of Onuoha and Pearce which is putting me off them!

One more point which I forgot to mention is that the current bonus system massively favours these mid price midfielders so a change in the bonus system could swing the balance back towards the big hitting defenders

Well, top defenders sometimes don't warrant enough attention even when they perform impressively, while mid-price midfielders sell like hot cakes - which is why premium defenders offer a source of consistent differentials.

Like what happened with Evra last season, he went on racking the points, but his ownership never seemed to climb.

Interesting point on defenders being differentials and I think its because of what Jonty said about the reluctancy to use transfers on defender.
Its more of a 'fire and forget' approach with them rather than a 'chop and change' approach with the midfielders

      afternoon/evening guys

i think its even more important to highlight the fact MJ omitted michu and fellaini.

each year there will be a michu/fellaini ala charlie adam. so looking at an extra 6.5 mf would in my view be far more worth it / have greater potential than going for an extra 6.5 df

its like getting extra tickets for the jackpot for the same purchase price...

Whilst this is all true, I dont think you can simply compare positions without taking account of the different positions.

More important to me is how many points does an upgrade from a 4.0 to a 6.0 defender earn you? How does this compare to an upgrade from a 6.0 to an 8.0 midfielder? I expect the answer to be even greater in favour of midfielders than your analysis shows.

Nice idea for an area to analyse, I think you're absolutely right especially going from 4.5-5.0 midfielders to 6.0-6.5 midfielders but strangely last year there was very little middle ground for midfielders between the 6.5 bracket and the big hitters with the exceptions of Yaya Toure and Coutinho, although I'd guess that's just a bit of coincidence

I think this is the aim, bring in more goals collectively as opposed to one good striker, I think we are well equipped with Sturridge and the general consensus is that Suarez will be replaced by Aspas, Luis Alberto and Mkhitaryan. It may also give us a better mentality with no Suarez.

Agree. They not been the same since Keane retired (never really replaced him) and scholes lost his box-to-box edge.

Hopefully Kagawa can emerge this year, but they need at least 1 if not 2 world class centre mids !

I agree about Kags, especially now SAF has gone. At times it seemed like SAF was playing a "sentimental" team last season... all the oldies. That said, it didn't do them any harm.

I'm quite excited about Arsenal this transfer window... yes, really! With a reported £70m to spend it'll be fascinating to see what Arsene does after 10 years of not a lot in the kitty.

This isn't meant to lead to a discussion of prospective targets, just simply that I will enjoy seeing what develops as I highly rate Arsene and the Arsenal board.

I hopeful ...I know we've been here before but from all I've read this summer I think the Arsenal will spend
a striker , hopefully a Higuian ,Rooney type . We really need to match the Agueros RVPs of our rivals

A decent centre mid , Fellaini , but I reckon one of the Germans we've been linked with

I've been playing around with the FPL stats for last season, breaking it down for each player by home and away performance for goals, assists, PPG, etc. and I thought this might be worth sharing:

    http://public.tableausoftware.com/views/2012-13season-HomevAway/FPLPointsPPG?:embed=y&:display_count=no

Although it looks like a splodge of messiness at first, you can use the check boxes to filter by individual teams and/or players to reduce it to something more useful.

But I think it will be quite useful when it comes to picking players for next season, in the context of how players' form varies home v away. Tie that in with rotation spreadsheets and it could be a useful tool.

              Yes it is!

You would think it's a simple thing to add a line to a chart, but whilst it's a great tool for most charting, there are some frustrating things about it (such as this issue), which means I haven't quite given up on Excel yet.

Having said that, there's no way I could have done these charts in excel, with the check box filtering and tooltips etc.

How much advanced stats tools does it have? I get fed up with excels refusal to admit I might not want to do things exactly there way.

y=x sometimes requires a data set of [0 0, 1 1, max max] and a trendline fitted to that data set alone.

I can't see an easy way of combining a simple line chart and the scatter plots I've used. There might be a way but I think it requires a bit of programming and I'm not enough of a Tableau expert to be able to work it out.

I find if you get your data sorted out, it's easy enough to show you're desired output. I use it show attempts conceded in the box against goals conceded. Showed me Reading was due a spanking in the last gameweek for example.

Yeah, I wrote an Excel macro to pull the stats from the FPL site, that's how I put together the spreadsheet linked in my name.

It's not quite as simple as a click of a button, it still takes me around 20 minutes each week to tidy up once it's in the spreadsheet.

The real stregth is being able to merge the data from FPL with the Opta stats from the members area. I use a lookup in excel to do that, but this also needs a bit of manual intervention because annoyingly the player names as listed in the members area are sometimes a bit different to how they appear on the FPL site. There is also the odd player who is categorised in a different position.

Save the logos (which I stole off the FPl site) to the shapes folder in your local Tableau directory, then assign team name to the shapes mark in Tableau, edit shape and they should appear in the 'select shape palette' drop down.

Very nice lad, much appreciated! May I suggest you have a gander at Chris Glovers blog if you have not already as he takes the statistical approach to analysing football as well (he is a fairly regular article contributor on here). I believe he did something similar last year midway through the season, might be of interest if you're so inclined.

Anyways good post, you can learn allot from the graphs, ala Walcott is indeed better away from home then at the emirates, Lampard is a consistent bugger away and at home.

For FPL purposes, the most obvious thing to take from such graphs is that they help us choose captains I believe. I.e. Cazorla might be a better pick when Arsenal are vs a weaker side at home, Walcott when Arsenal are away to a weaker side.

Seems to be. The pattern is that we have a period of calm whereby the rest of the footballing world starts to believe we might not be a complete joke, he gets bored and spins his roulette wheel of humiliation to determine which self destruct button to push this time. I reckon Ashley lost a bet this time.

    With regards to The3rdTurd stats

Let's say a player was particularly poor in away fixtures last season. Would that put you off playing them in away games this season?

Also. what do you think determines poor away form in contrast to good home form? Is it down to a comfort level playing in front of your owns fans or something else?

It would make me hesitate, yes. At the very least it would make me look into possible reasons why their away form last season was so poor. There might be positional/formation reasons, e.g. how RVP used to play deeper in away games last season when Rooney was also playing. If those reasons were being replicated again next season, then surely you would think about benching that player?

Good points. I guess if you are shelling out big money for big players they play home and away to justify the amount you spend on them but it would definitely apply to the rest of your squad when deciding who to play in certain fixtures.

        Exactly this.

The stats themselves are meaningless, they only serve to act as a quick way to hghlight a potential issue that requires further research. As with everything the underlying reasons are for more important than the actual result.

no. you can do various bets like "next team to score" or "odds of other team scoring" but even if you can do it its really just betting on "the losing team to score" and the odds would be far less than pre-kick off

    Bit of a funny question...

But I am having to do something for geography and having a bit of a mind blank...

The growth in a sector was 10.6

so increased by 10.6 pounds on previous year

you could get the "overperforamce figure" by doing [last years number of pounds plus 10.6 pounds] divided by [last years number of pounds minus 9.8 pounds]

that would give you a figure of 1.[something].

times that by 100 and you have a % figure of 100 and something. that is the % amount it produced compared to expected output.

          make sense?

A few changes I would welcome seeing next season
    1 – Include all valid formations, for example the 5-5-0 & 4-2-4
2 – Points for retrieving possession as it would mean defensive midfielders could become involved.
    3 – Hits cost 2 points.
4 – Extra wildcard for the last 10 games.
5 - Unlimited players per club.
    6 - VC scores 1.5 X
7 - Rolling captain pick as in the Euros game.

It's not used the world over. 4-4-2 with the wide men pushing up can play like a 4-2-4 but the context of you wanting it resembles a game of FIFA on a striker bonanza. It's completely unrealistic.

As for the 5-5-0 I think you have been watching Craig Levein too much.

only one change i would like...an extra point/two (?) for a defender CS...That would open up the game to far more formations....When a team playing 3-4-3 on a head to head is as worried about his/her opponenet playing a 5-4-1 as they are about the three forwards then the game will be truly wide open.

His strike rate isn't that formidable. Good for a player who plays wide right but still not great especially for Nigeria.
