Moving Target

Moving Target – Andy Carroll

West Ham stepped up their summer recruitment drive yesterday with the acquisition of Andy Carroll from Liverpool for an undisclosed club record fee. The 24-year-old returns to Upton Park after a relatively successful loan spell last term and arrives on a six-year deal, with the Hammers having the option of extending his contract by a further two years:

Carroll is Sam Allardyce’s third signing of the close-season, following left-back Razvan Rat and keeper Adrian to the club. With Liverpool rumoured to be ready to splash the cash on the likes of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Iago Aspas, he was deemed surplus to requirement up front and, with the 2014 World Cup looming, has decided to reunite with Allardyce in order to boost his international chances ahead of next year’s competition in Brazil. Speaking to the Hammers’ official website, Carroll went on to say:

“It’s fantastic for me to be here. I really enjoyed last season, and that shows in me coming back and making it permanent. The fans, the lads and the club itself has been great to me, and what I wanted to do was come back here and play football. Since the end of the season I’ve had a lot of time to think, I’ve missed it and that’s why I’m back. Getting promoted the season before last, then finishing where we did – we did great, and it can only get better for us. The way the club’s being run, obviously getting the new stadium and everything like that, it’s only going up.”

The History

Carroll’s career began as a 17-year-old back in 2006/07 with a handful of sub appearances for Newcastle. Struggling to establish himself as a first-team player, he was farmed out to Preston North End the following season, where he notched once in 11 matches. Returning to his parent club for the following campaign, he again failed to nail down a regular role and managed just three goals from 14 appearances as Newcastle slipped into the Championship.

The drop to a lower division afforded Carroll the chance of regular game time, though, and he finally thrived as the Tyneside team quickly achieved promotion, racking up 17 goals and 12 assists over 39 matches. Returning to the top-flight as the club’s main forward, Carroll was a Fantasy football phenomenon in the first half of the 2010/11 season, producing 11 goals and seven assists in just 19 appearances before he was snapped up by Liverpool on the final day of the January transfer window.

His time on Merseyside has been a bitter disappointment, though – from a total of 44 league matches, Carroll found the net on just six occasions, with three assists also accrued. With his style of play clearly at odds with Brendan Rodgers’ tactics, the big Geordie reunited with Allardyce at Upton Park last term and, after a slow start and knee problems, eventually settled, producing seven goals and four assists over 24 league appearances.

The Prospects

If Carroll picks up from where he left off towards the end of the previous season, the omens look good for the Hammers. Although he notched just a single goal and assist over his first 10 appearances, his displays improved significantly after he returned to action from the afore-mentioned knee issue.

In his final 13 appearances for the Hammers, Carroll had a hand in 10 of West Ham’s side’s 18 goals – finding the net six times in addition to supplying four assists. At home, in particular, he was hugely effective, producing attacking returns in six of his final seven matches at Upton Park – a clear sign of his increasing consistency in his new surrounds, with an average of 6.5 points per home game over that period.

In terms of tactics, Allardyce will no doubt retain his lone forward formation, with Kevin Nolan providing support as the most advanced central midfielder and Matt Jarvis supplying plenty of crosses from the left for Carroll to feed off. Given that Nolan is set for a price hike across the Fantasy games after last term’s scoring exploits, Carroll may well be an option if his initial cost is relatively budget friendly.

Having started the previous campaign at 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) as a Liverpool forward, a drop to around 7.5 or 8.0 looks on the cards – a realistic price for a first-choice forward at a mid-table side. With previous mid-price favourites such as Christian Benteke, Rickie Lambert and possibly Romelu Lukaku expected to escalate in price, our Fantasy targets will be reassessed and could once again focus on Carroll.

Yesterday’s release of the 2013/13 fixture list also looks promising. With home games against Cardiff, Stoke and Everton allied with trips to Newcastle, Southampton and Hull, the Hammers have been afforded one of the kindest opening schedules of any club. Providing the initial pricing is reasonable, then, the big Geordie certainly done enough over the final few months of his loan spell to indicate he may well be set for a resurgence as Allardyce looks to build upon last term’s solid tenth placed finish.

"The Daily Mirror reports that the reason Derek Lambeezy resigned from Newcastle after a deal for Brazilian defender Douglas fell through, because Joe Kinnear had never heard of him.

The paper claims: 'Llambias is understood to have spent months lining up a Bosman-style free transfer for 25-year-old centre-half Douglas, who was linked with Newcastle as far back as last summer, and a deal was in place.'

However, Kinnear barreled in and gave Steve McClaren a call, because he had no idea who Douglas (who has played in the Champions League) was.

Lambeezy then resigned because he felt he couldn't work with Kinnear."

From where I'm standing neither of you have much to shout about.

Look at the league table at the end of the 2011/12 season and then look at the league table at the end of last season and see who got relegated.

There's a good chance one or both of you could drop this season.

If chief scout Graham Carr goes then Newcastle are doomed long term. His scouting and more importantly great relocation plan for incoming players is modeled on the Lyon system. Get promising players in, look after them and help them with language (former player Bernard was helping out with all of this) is a great model. Cabaye, Tiote and sissoko all slotted in very quickly as a result.

Carr will be one very sought after man if he leaves.

He was playing for a contract last season, so it's tough to know how he'll play with that sorted. Then again the same could've been said of RVP before his move to Utd. Certainly be a tempter for me at 7.5.

Oh yes, definitely, but a lot will depend on his price.

I would like to think he'd come in at £6.5m tops but in reality I think we will be looking at between £7-8.5m for him. Depending on how many big hitters we each want that may be too expensive for a 3rd striker.

I think that would have to be the more realistic scenario, Bedknobs.

In that respect I think he could be terrific value, especially if, as I suspect, he can match his pre injury form in his first season in the Prem for Newcastle.

They finished strong defensively, especially after Boruc was installed permanently in goal.

I get the feeling that the £4.5m ones will be fringe players or the ones with zero attacking capacity. Hope I'm wrong as I'm planning to go the £4.5m defence route myself. I already get the feeling I'm pairing Speroni or Stockdale with a n other keeper and having one Hull def on my bench.

I think Hull will be the best of the 3 promoted teams defensively but, really, I'm not sure that's saying an awful lot.

Green and white is the theme colour of the site. And you will only have the 'New Post' bar once at the end of every post so it won't matter than hot topics are in green. Light grey is just a colour than bothers me. It's too noncommital 😉

It's tricky - I can completely disable comments on the old article but then I'd be cutting any discussions off - ideally, we need a way of blocking new comments but allowing replies to existing comments. Definitely a decent feature idea I reckon.

I can't understand how people don't know there's a new post, maybe it's the way I use it. Especially now with the way comments come up automatically. I usually read an article hit the icon to return to the main page and read comments there. If I post something it's the same and i'll see anyway replies come through down the side.

DGW1 (for sure.. yet to be confirmed)

    Chelsea vs Hull City(H) & Aston Villa(H)
    Aston Villa vs Arsenal(A) & Chelsea(A)

3 Chelsea players are a must..

If you have to select 1 Villa player at least.. who will it be? Benteke or Weimann or Agbonlahor?

At risk of being almost on-topic, who are going to be our options for budget strikers this year (6.5 and under)? here's some off the top of my head:

    AVL: Wieman, Agbonlahor (maybe 7+)
    EVE: Anichebe (ahem)
FUL: Ruiz (mid?), Berbatov (probably 7+)
    NEW: Cisse (Probably 7+)
    NOR: RvWW
SOT: J Rod (mid?), Lambert (probably 7+)
    STK: Crouch, Jones (both punts)
SUN: Fletcher (probably 7+), Graham (ROFL)
    WBA: Long
    WHM: Carroll (probably 7+)

I haven't checked who the newly promoted strikers are, but I remember reading the articles on them and thinking that they all sounded utterly gash (apart from the guy who needs a new knee).

    Slim pickings chaps, slim pickings.

Very slim pickings in my opinion.

Van Wolfswinkel appears to be a good shout at the £6.5m mark as does J-Rod.

Even at £6.5m Crouch would be a poor shout especially with Hughes as manager now as I can't see him playing to Crouch's strengths. If WBA don't get Lukaku back I think they will struggle up top and Long would be a risk.

If Kone follows Martinez to Everton and is about £6.5m I think he'd be a good pick up.

Still, wait and see what happens in the transfer market as I suspect there are plenty of moves yet to be made which will alter our approaches.

Out of the 3 newly promoted teams, which one do you think will settle best? There's always one every year who finishes around 12th.

I can't see Hull doing very well, espescially with the likes of Paul McShane in defence.

I can see Cardiff staying up relatively comfortably if they make a smart signing or two.

I can see Crystal Palace settling in straightaway though. But their fixtures don't look too great.

Newcastle, Stoke , Sunderland and Villa might do a Daft Punk and get lucky this season.

Genuinely think all 3 promoted teams look like going straight back down.

If I had to pick one to stay up it'd be Hull due to Bruce's influence. Newcastle already look like they are ready to self destruct which would worry me as a Toon fan and give me hope if I was a fan of Hull, Palace or Cardiff.

      thinking something like this-

      Luiz, McAuly, Demel, Santon, 4 = 25
      Bale, Hazard, Nolan, HBA/Mirallas/Aspas/kagawa, benchfodder = 40.5
      Aguero, Rvw, Carroll/Cisse/Sturridge = 25

though with more signings, it will obviously change somewhat!!!

Uber defence and no RVP or Bale to afford Cavani, Higuain, Aguero, Hazard, Oscar, HeMan and Kagawa.

My plans are WC after GW3, to tinker during the international brake and gain an early team value boost. Unless I have a flying start and am in the top 1k - but maybe even then. Maybe I need a flyings start AND have the correct benchfodder in the team who are gaining 0.1s rapitly NOT to WC.

Since WCing after GW2 looking at the seasonticker beyond GW2 is not really that interesting.

So tottenham, city and Chelsea are likely to be a main force in my team come GW1.

I have become a believer in planning the WC, and not playing it randomly when your team hurts. It feels like having more control this way.

Higuain (assuming he signs for Arsenal) and Aguero are two strikers i'm strongly considering for the first few gw's at least.

GK rotation of Ruddy/Boruc looks nice.

and i'm looking at one big defender (chelsea for gw 1 and then probably a city defender) plus 4 rotating cheapies. still trying to sort out which of my 4 way rotations (http://tinyurl.com/4wayrotations) I like the best, or if there's one i'm missing.

First he gives Pardew a ridiculously long contract on the back of a good season then he wants him out after a poor season but surely he needs to consider how injuries and Europa involvement affected their results in the PL. The guy doesn't seem to know what direction he wants to take the club in.

Probably been mentioned before, but Japan are playing some fantastic football.

Last night's game against Italy was the only game I've seen of the Confederations Cup, but what a beauty it was.

Honda to the Premier League any time soon?

WHICH PRICE DISTRIBUTION IS BETTER FOR DEFs???

Both are good options. The £6.5 gets you a defender from the top 4 such as Luiz/Zaba/Rafael but with CS generally coming more regularly in the second half of the season it might be worth investing in option 2 unless you get a £6.5 defender with good attacking potential.

Yeah, the challenge this season looks like it may well be deciding whether to get one big hitter in defence and surround him with cheapies or go for a balanced defence where all your players are pretty much the same budget price with no more than £0.5m between them all.

I did post yesterday wondering how many people will end up going down the Baines/Kompany route in defence. It will be interesting to see what strategy people on here use once the price list comes out.

Yeah he will have his own ideas. I just know that FPL pricing will put Kompany at the top of the list and I don't think he is worth the extra investment. Zabaleta is South American and on the back of a very good season. I would be 😯 if he wasn't nailed on.

Not an option in our front page; Bale or RVP or both voting.
I think there could be quite a few others who might try this when the prices are announced.

last season we saw a number of cheap 4 mil defenders doing very well. the likes of Davies, Demel, o brien, Turner, Martin, Clyne, Wilson served their owners pretty well. and they also enabled to get us the big hitters up front.
can we expect similar cheapies to excel this term and if so which are the teams likely to provide that option?

Hard to say but someone emerges every season so no reason to believe it won't happen again.

As things stand now I think Hull may be the best defensively of the 3 newcomers. Its hard to see any of the existing Prem teams really being £4m but I could be wrong.

I do like Speroni as a 2nd keeper and think that he could be good value if he comes in at £4m. I also like Stockdale if he stays at Hull (a keeper I think my QPR should have gone in for instead of Cesar and Green).

Villa were pretty awful defensively last term so some of their lads may scrape in at £4m but other than Lowton I'm not sure you could consider them value whatever their price is.
