Scout Report – Antonio Luna

Aston Villa’s summer spending spree shows no sign of slowing down after they landed left-back Antonio Luna from Spanish club Sevilla for a fee reported to be in the region of £1.5m. The 22-year-old arrives on a three-year contract and is Paul Lambert’s fifth signing of the close-season, following the acquisition of Aleksandr Tonev, Jores Okore, Leandro Bacuna and Nicklas Helenius to Villa Park over the last few weeks.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Luna admitted that Lambert’s decision to freshen up his first-team squad by focussing on youth was a key factor in his decision to move to the midlands.

“The manager explained to me that it is a young squad but also one with good experience and everyone is hungry, everybody wants to succeed here. This is perfect because I am keen to make progress myself and I want to be part of this…Obviously, I have watched Premier League games and I am totally aware of the pace of the game and that the challenge is to constantly be at the maximum and top of your performance…I really can’t wait to get started and to play my first game. I have a great expectation coming here.”

The History

A product of the Sevilla youth system, Luna made his debut for the club’s reserve team in 2009/10, making 32 appearances and finding the net once. The following year, he featured for the senior side on a couple of occasions but was farmed out on loan to La Liga side Almeria midway through the campaign, where he produced a single assist in 13 league matches as the club slipped out of the Spanish top-flight.

Returning to Sevilla, he featured 14 times in the 2011/12 campaign, producing a goal and assist but, after making four first-team appearances last term, Luna was once again sent out on loan. Staying in Spain, he temporarily moved to Mallorca, providing one assist in 13 games, but he once again suffered the ignominy of relegation before returning to his parent club at the end of the season. Luna has also represented his country at youth level, featuring for the Spain U19 and U20 sides on a total of seven occasions.

The Prospects

Certainly, Luna’s chances of nailing down the left-back berth look strong for the season ahead. Last time out, Lambert seemed unconvinced by the likes of Joe Bennett and, while Matt Lowton was quick to nail down a role on the right after moving from Sheffield United, the Villa boss utilised four different players on the opposite side of his defence, with Nathan Baker, Enda Stevens and Eric Lichaj all handed a chance.

With Lichaj now released and Baker more comfortable at centre-half to compete with the likes of Ciaran Clark for starts, Luna is likely to get the nod over Bennett for a regular role, though it’s fair to say Villa’s lack of resilience remains a concern. Lambert’s attacking policy – which saw former club Norwich register just three clean sheets in 2011/12 – was again in evidence last term, as the midlands outfit nullified their opponents on five occasions and conceded in every match from Gameweek 17 onwards.

On the positive side, a total of 69 goals against – only less porous than relegated duo Reading and Wigan, with 73 goals conceded apiece – will ensure Villa’s defensive assets remain firmly in the budget bracket, with a price of 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) looking the likeliest scenario. While Brad Guzan’s propensity to rack up the save points and Lowton’s attacking instincts are likely to keep them ahead of the new boy on our Fantasy radars, Luna may be one to watch if he can replicate the latter’s impact and perhaps present an even cheaper alternative.

Villa’s opening three fixtures, which pit them against Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea, are enough to deter initial backline investment, though – furthermore, while the trip to Stamford Bridge, originally schedule for Gameweek 3, could be moved to an earlier date and hand Lambert’s side a double, their defensive record is hardly persuasive. With matches against City and Spurs also in the opening eight Gameweeks, Lambert’s men have one of the trickiest starts to the season of any side – Fantasy managers will no doubt be happy to steer clear and allow Villa time to settle before contemplating Luna and his fellow defensive options.

I don't think anyone can convince me to get an Aston Villa defender at the start of the season. Their fixtures look so bad.

If I was to get one, I'd probably just get Lowton anyway. But there are better cheap options at the start of the season

I fear a bit for Villa. Lambert has bought well I feel and the players will be better for the experience of last season. But they have a really tough start, if things go badly there, there's a chance they might not recover

Unfortunately young backlines are inexperienced backlines, definitely steering clear of Villa defence. O think the 'captain against Villa' strategy will continue to shine, beginning with Higuain (C) 😉

The PL can play whack-a-mole all they like, they'll find it difficult to block all sites without new ones springing up to replace them.

Of course, they're not learning the real lesson from the existence of these sites, which is that they charge way too frickin much for the legitimate product.

Yeah see above I think they'll be driven into increasingly desperate behaviour to preserve the rights.

I looked into getting Sky last year and it really was unaffordable as I'd heard it was.

Pity Triggerlips in NZ though, none of their broadcasters got rights and their only coverage will be online subscription, with a notoriously slow network.

Yeah, I'm sure if have it OK compared to some countries, but even so, the situation for PL games in the UK really grinds my gears! The amount of money I have to pay each month for Sky Sports, and still I can't watch any live games which kick off on Saturdays at 3pm. And this doesn't even get me all games broadcast on TV because in the name of consumer competition I have to pay another £10 a month to get the games on BT/ESPN/Setanta or whoever owns the other rights. And the coverage is for the most part pretty crap and tabloid in nature. And I feel dirty about shovelling money into Rupert Murdoch's back pocket.

That's a racket, you're paying through the nose for a pretty limited product.

It's a strange kind of competition when there's one or at best two providers showing different games. It's not competition on price or quality. Just a closed market, like it or lump it.

    Villas 5 signings

Antonio Luna - 22, from Seville, Spanish
Aleksandr Tonev - 23, from Lech Poznan, Bulgarian
Jores Okore - 20, from Nordsjalland, Danish,
Leandro Bacuna - 21, from FC Groningen, Dutch
Nicklas Helenius - 21, from Aalborg BK, Danish

Highlights a number of issues facing English football - the influx of young foreign players which limits the chances of home-grown players breaking through; the limited opportunities there are for young players from the lower divisions to break through and as a consequence the limited amount of money from the PL that trickles down to those lower divisions.

England need to start again as the players in the their late teens, early 20's generally are far more accomplished on the continent. The calibre of player over here needs to improve drastically so clubs don't think twice about buying local instead of going to Europe and South America.

They need to produce better players at 6,7,8 and bring them through playing a much better brand of football so that by the time they are 17, 18, 19 they are already at a level capable of competing with the French, Dutch, German and Spanish.

Try using a template similar to France, Holland, Spain or Germany for a start because it works for them. They need to understand that big, strong, powerful and quick does not equal talent.

Maybe there are cultural differences impeding British players or a different mind set to the way they approach the game.

Fundamentally the coaching as a whole needs to change and more emphasis on touch and playing the possession game. You could see how inferior the U-21's were in comparison to their opponents. No confidence on the ball, lacking ideas or invention and not comfortable unless they had an obvious pass to play. Players need to become more relaxed on the ball particularly in tights areas rather than fell pressured and want to get rid of the ball.

Definitely. Environmental factors play a part aswell. Academies have the facilites so it's less noticeable but for the majority of young players across the UK the winters are not conducive to playing good football. Having to battle through the elements isn't going to improve your technique.

You see the players abroad playing and it looks like they enjoy playing the game more. They seem more relaxed, play with more freedom and are not afraid to try things with the ball.

It's almost too late for that without FA intervention. Why spend money and time nurturing youth when you clubs can just buy them ready made off the European shopping shelf.
Because of the money floating about in the Premier League, it's vital that clubs looks for the quickest solution available to them just to keep in the league. There might be 40% of English players in the league but in reality looking at first choice players, that's around 25%. Not every player develops at a very early age, some develop with lots of playing time and those opportunities are becoming more scarce every season.

But they do try Granville....Since i've been taking my lads to junior football teams and become involved with it all i've been staggered at how many scouts are out looking for players...Admittedly i live in a bit of a hot spot for scouting and clubs (central Lancs) but even so the numbers of scouts out from the NW clubs is impressive...So it's not like they've given up on youth...

I know, I see them too. Our U-17, U-19 teams are really competitive. Ignoring the most recent comp, the U-21 team is too.

The disconnect happens at graduation to the senior team because they are crowded out by players from all over the world who have experienced first team football. Those opportunities are available elsewhere around Europe, the reason being, most teams have no choice but to bring players through because of lack of spending power.

We have a couple of really promising players at Barnet who have played a few games for us this year and excelled in the reserves. What they really need is to get a full season with us under their belts, but the rumours are that Arsenal and Spurs are preparing to steal them which is just ridiculous.

Well it was a lot harder to qualify for the world cup when there was only 16 clubs. For instance we didn't get to the 78 world cup because it was us or Italy and they pipped us to it. In the 50's and 60's, England were right up there.
In the last 20 years coaching hasn't moved on for sure and we've been left behind. It's a combination of coaching and opportunity, both are lacking.

I'm surprised as a coach you don't take a more critical approach to the way things are being done. If things were working we wouldn't be having this conversation.

How does your homegrown talent develop when they can't get in the team because the club prioritise the foreign player they bought from Europe?

The 70's was a long time ago and Britain were decades behind with the drinking culture and poor diet compared to their counterparts.

When that new TV deal was made, the Premier League made an empty statement in an attempt to discourage clubs from spending this new found money on players and wages. Predictably they're not taking a blind bit of notice.

I think the problem starts long before the transition stage into the pro ranks...I see the conditions we have our kids playing in and despair at times...Conditions that most people would seriously not walk the dog in...I don't know about where you live but the number of cancellations in winter is shocking in the NW for junior football and the matches that do go ahead are really not condusive to any kind of good football at all...I watch kids at Central Lancs University sports arena from time to time and it's fantastic...great facilities...great training...great football...But that is simply not available for most kids...A great shame and for me the beginnings of the problem we have at international level...

Yeah mate it's exactly the same in Scotland. Some great facilities but nowhere near enough. Makes you wonder if a winter shutdown and summer football at the younger levels should be seriously considered.

And those conditions you refer to just promote a physical, battling and scrappy game of football where all you can do is win the match but not really improve your game on a technical level.

That is the problem, their priorities are wrong. If they want the National team producing players of the same quality as the countries they buy from they need to impose more regulations and ensure the focus is placed on homegrown talent.

It's never too late. The Germans made a decision in 2000 after horrible tournament to completely change their approach to youth development and look at them now.

The most significant change, was insisting that in these new academies at least 12 players in each intake have to be eligible to play for Germany.

Since that restructuring, the proportion of Germany-qualified players in the Bundesliga has changed significantly.

In 2003-4 we had 44% from foreign countries. Right now it is only 38%. So 62% are able to play for the national team. In England it is the other way around, with an approximate 60/40 split of foreigners and nationals.

Seifert emphasised that essential to the system's smooth operation was the unity between clubs and the German FA, achieved in part through the stipulation that no single entity can own more than 49% of a Bundesliga club.

This way you don't have a foreign owner who doesn't really care for the national team. The clubs have a very strong relationship with the FA: we are all engaged in discussions.

I've spoken about this model before and comes with that the accusation that I'm a little Englander. Surely for the sake of the national team, we've got to have positive discrimination.

Absolutely. It can't be great for these young English players confidence to see that clubs would rather buy a Brazilian, Spanish or German youth player than promote from within. That must create a bit of an inferiority complex aswell. They need tighter restrictions, it's not as if PL survival is in the hands of the young foreign players anyway. It's just an easier option and a shortcut to producing players except it's much more damaging in the long run.

and more than that...I remember well lots of similar conversations in the Seventies when we went through a much worse time at international level...I like the post above about the limits imposed on foreign players in the German league...but i doubt that in itself would be enough to magic up a more successful national team...Not in the case of England anyway..Our problems start very early and are cultural as well as footballing...

Impose a foreigner limit and you will drive up the wages for inferior English players to the detriment of quality of the pl the majority of whose fans aren't even English.

Get more pro coaches and less unqualified coaches and English players technical ability will improve. The ratio of pro coaches to players in spain and Germany is far higher than anywhere else in Europe and that is the main reason their players are better. Too many part time know it alls that know nothing trying to coach kids in the uk. Use the money from epl to the fa to provide free coaching courses and better facilities for the kids.

Personally I think keepers are undervalued.

Most teams that win the premiership have had a top keeper.

If it gets them an extra 10-15 points per season its money well spent.

Reina is a very good shot stopper and commands his box well so the question is what extra value does Rogers see in Mignolet? (or is it just an age/value thing).

I think your whole midfield is under priced apart from Brady.

      Bale 12.5
      Hazard 10
      Coutinho 8.5
      Kagawa 8.5

Great article, i think the 3-4-3 would suit everton nicely. Baines and Coleman are Wingbacks, fellaini may be out but Gibson is decent and can fill in there, the only one that doesn't fit imho is Jelavić... too slow... too "old fashioned center forward".

I'm glad someone agrees 🙂 I found it really interesting. If Pienaar gets that forward role he could be a great buy. Can't see him rising too much either, can see Coleman in a lot of teams this yr alright.
