Scout Report – Erik Pieters

Mark Hughes made his first move into the transfer market as Stoke City manager last week with the acquisition of Erik Pieters from PSV Eindhoven for a fee of 3.6m Euros. The 24-year-old joins up at the Britannia on a four-year deal and, although predominantly utilised as a left-back, also affords the Potters a versatility at centre-half, according to his new manager.

“I am delighted to have secured Erik’s signature. The main focus this summer in attempting to strengthen the squad is ensuring it is balanced in key positions. While Erik is predominantly a left back, he has also played for his country as a central defender, so he gives us other options. We need good quality in our starting eleven and good quality back-up for all areas, which Erik will certainly give us defensively.”

The History

Pieters initially started out as a central midfielder before being converted to a defender upon joining the FC Utrecht youth system. Making his debut as an 18-year-old in 2006, he produced two goals and three assists over a couple of seasons before PSV came calling in July 2008. His time in Eindhoven has been plagued by injury, though – knee, metatarsal (twice) and hand injuries (caused by his decision to punch a window after being sent off) have seen him sidelined for months at a time. As a result, he featured just 93 times in the Dutch top-flight over five years at the club, providing a total of nine assists.

On the international stage, Pieters helped Holland to the European U21 Championship Trophy back in 2008 and has since went on to represent the senior side on 17 occasions, though missed out on last year’s Euro 2012 due to injury.

The Prospects

While Hughes talked up the new boy’s versatility, it seems certain Pieters has been purchased to solve the Potters’ problematic left-back area. Tony Pulis utilised Marc Wilson, Andy Wilkinson, Geoff Cameron and even Robert Huth on the left of his defence last term but the Dutchman is determined to nail down a regular role, saying:

“I’ve had a few injuries but that’s all in the past now; I feel really good and can’t wait for my time as a Stoke City player to start. My first job is to defend but I always want to attack and contribute as much as I can for the team. I’ve played a couple of times in the centre of defence as well but left back is my position.”

Pieters’ runs down the left look set to offer Stoke more of an attacking approach from deep as Hughes attempts to bring a little more flair to their football after seasons of dour displays under Pulis. The above-mentioned quartet managed a single assist between them all season – alarmingly, a tally mirrored by Matt Etherington and Michael Kightly, who started a combined 28 games on the left of midfield.

With creativity required throughout the team in order to help address the dire 34 goal haul from last season, the Dutchman certainly looks fundamental to Hughes’ plans, with the likes of Wilson and Wilkinson set to play the part of bench-warmers. While a consistency of starts looks on the cards – providing he steers clear of injury, of course – price remains an issue for the Potters rearguard options after they shipped a mere 45 times in Pulis’ last season.

A rise across the Fantasy games for Asmir Begovic is anticipated – popular opinion anticipates a move to 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) for the stopper, while there’d be no real surprise if Huth and Ryan Shawcross come in at a similar cost. Given that Pieters looks likely to be nailed-on under Hughes he may well follow suit; such a scenario may ultimately leave the Stoke right-back spot as the best value – with Ryan Shotton, Cameron and Wilkinson all capable of filling in, the hope is their prices will remain a little lower due to the uncertainty, affording us a cheap option around the 5.0 mark.

The opening fixtures hardly fall in Stoke’s favour, though, and even if Pieters is handed a more favourable cost across the Fantasy games, initial investment seems unlikely. Hughes’ rein kicks off with trips to Liverpool, West Ham and Arsenal in the opening five and with a home clash against City also on the cards, the Gameweek 2 visit of Palace seems the only kind favour over that period. As featured in our recent series of rotation articles, a Stoke/Norwich combination has plenty potential for the season ahead, though whether Hughes can bring an extra attacking verve to the Potters’ play without sacrificing some of the resilience instilled under Pulis remains to be seen.

Brazil lose out on competitive matches though as they don't have to qualify for the wc. But above and beyond that they are rather unusual.

Argentina won't be winning the WC on Brazilian soil. I just can't see it.

They are top heavy and don't have a great defence. And Messi is yet to turn it on for the National side.

Brazil were excellent tonight but Spain were poor and much of that was due to the efforts exerted over 120 mins v Italy and they certainly lacked the zip, well except Navas and Villa. BBC pundits slating Span & the aging Xavi are painting the wrong picture, he is still quality but was made to have a poor game.

Great tournament, super Final, awesome support and I cannot wait for the World Cup.

Spain like to eat away at teams. Had Fred not scored after 90 seconds they'd have been passing the ball around their own half and it COULD have been a much different game. They just couldn't adapt after going down so early, urgency isn't something Spain have had to have often in the last 5/6 years.

As good as Brazil were (and they were excellent), Spain are still a class above the rest in my honest opinion and I still fancy them for glory next summer. Home advantage obviously favours Brazil and Argentina to a lesser extent but I would be very surprised if it isn't one of those three teams.

Semi-agree: the early goal, the Luiz save off the line and the missed penalty made the outcome seem more lopsided than it could have been, but i think there's a chink in spain's armor. They looked toothless upfront all tournament, and Brazil got in behind them far too frequently. Not a "class-above" anymore, based on this tournament.

Don't forget to throw Germany into that mix...

how is it urgency when they go down 90sec after?
unless they are trying to play out 0:0, they still have the same work to do as before.

Spain's passing was poor, and arbeloa is horrible.
      Xavi wasn't good either.
Defending again was piss poor, especially against counter attack.

I agree im hoping this result pushes Spains odds out a little as they'll be there or there abouts next summer......

That said I find tiker takker a bit boaring to watch - when spain are camped in opositions half playing 47 sideways passes before they shoot. Much prefer watching end to end and counter attacking football.

Im going to write to seb blatter and ask if he can pass a rule meaning that Spain always start 1-0 down so they have more urgency... you never know, if I put it in an envolope with enough cash it will proibably get passed 🙂

    FPL new season:
Bearing in mind so much may be new and unpredictable in so many of the top sides with the new managers in place, I'm thinking about starting with beefed up midfield with the likes of Bale, Hazard, Coutinho, Walcott and a cheapie.
This would force me to field only mid and low priced forwards, e.g. Rodriguez, Carroll and Wolfinkenstrupfel.
I don't currently fancy any of the big hitting forwards like van Persie with the new manager, Aguero whom I simply don't trust, or anyone from Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs or Liverpool as I would already field some attackers from these outfits in my midfield.
Hopefully this would allow me to also field some big hitters in defence, e.g. Hart + cheapie, and Luiz and Enrique plus 4-4.5 cheapies alternating.
The downfall of this thinking is I have no attacking player from either of the Manc sides. But I'm not able to unravel this latter dilemma now.
    Thoughts?

I don't see how folk are going to fit expensive defenders in their teams next season. There are too many heavy hitters costing megabucks floating about.

Bale, RVP, Mata, Suaz, Michu, a Citeh heavy. Just hope we get a few "Michus" to fill our teams.

Interesting. Could be quite inflexible though as you wouldn't be able to quickly swap out if a striker was looking great e.g. if you started with Aguero and RVP was going mental, it's just one transfer. This way, if you wanted a big striker, you'd have to take a hit. You might be unwilling to do this which might make you miss out big time. However I agree that at the moment there are more obvious choices in midfield.

You're right it's inflexible. But I don't see how you could field a more flexible setup with the prices that folks around here are expecting.
Also, it's my strong personal resolution I'm going to resist jumping trains next season and so having solid hitters from the top sides in my midfield who are already proven quality in FPL will help me stick to my plan.

Yeah I agree it's a good plan to have a core of players who you essentially keep the whole season. If they're from top 5 teams you don't look at the fixtures so much. Really helps.

No Chelsea if they get DGW1 may hurt you.

Don't be too cheap upfront. Need to invest sufficiently. The real key is the timing of getting the right i.e in form strikers. Rodriguez, Carroll & RvW to let's say Benteke, Lukaku & Lambo can be very hard if you don't invest properly.

        There's Hazard and Luiz.

I agree with the other point. Thing is, we don't have this certainty with any of the heavy hitters upfront either. The heavy hitting lot in my midfield at least seem to offer stability and riches and they ARE attacking.

I hope so as I rate him as an FPL player.

But in the setup I've proposed Hart, Luiz and Enrique can be easily replaced with any other big hitting three, e.g. De Gea, Baines and Verthongen. That does not cause my confusion now.
My real dilemma concerns the balance between the midfield and the attacking line that I've proposed.

Well, good luck with your future selection. I understand the lure of those attacking mids, but there's no gurantee they'll replicate last season's form. Remember Silva? and Valencia? Personally i think i'm going to struggle getting at least 3 heavy hitters across the mid even if i invest a decent amount of 33.5 mil at the back.

But can you guarantee any solid returns or any stable presence in fact from any of the big hitters up front? Save van Persie maybe. Is Aguero guaranteed to start even if he's fit? Ba? Torres? Will Higuain be there in the end? Sturridge? I'd prefer Coutinho personally.

Coutinho is the only safe bet for LIv going forward imo, given their uncertainties upfront. I might get him too.

Point taken, mate. There's no guarantee of course, but my only point is that i'd rather have a decently priced strikers upfront so it'll be easier to switch between them depending form. Hence the likes of Higuain (if he comes)/Benteke/Studge should be 'buyable' when they're desirable.

                I see your point too.
But if I were to play any of the strikers you brought up I'd have to sacrifice some of the midfielders I have.
We will need a lot of patience in the first month.
And then I'd feel more secure with Hazard than Benteke even if I'm able to replace Benteke with another big hitter.
But hey, how many weeks are there left before the kick off?

Really don't have a strategy atm Jaf. I have pretty much come to the conclusion that i am not going to have as lucky a start as i did last season and prepared to wildcard very early.

Also, intend on doing some heavy scouting first 3 weeks as they are very important i reckon. Also be more patient and a little less flairy. Hold nerve.

Worth remembering that after their DGW, Chelsea have mun followed by a blank, and GW4 game is a few days before their first Champions League game.

I want flexibility after DGW so I'll have two Chelsea max, and that means attackers. Hazard and Cavani, if he comes.

I trust the defence less, at least until we've seen who Jose's pets are. I can't see Hazard, Mata or Cavani* not being first choice.

Well worth a punt I think. I hadn't seen (or noticed) a lot of him until this confed cup. Watching him for Uruguay, I've been at least as impressed with his playmaking as his shooting. He seems powerful and hungry, and really good in the air which are traditionally the traits that do well in BPL.

That's worth bearing in mind but my feeling is that two home games against AVL and HUL have the potential to be goalfests. I want attackers as a priority and I'd only get a defender as a third player.

I'm also very nervous about who would be nailed on. CBs could be any two of Cahill, Ivanovic, Terry and Luiz. FBs could be fraught too.

Who will you be going for?

Fwiw I reckon ivanovich is an archetypal jm defender and with his goal threat it will probably be him.

I know jm played pepe in midfield from time to time at rm but I dont see luiz doing that as he only did it with pepe when he needed a bit extra defensively.

No but once I build up some value I night bring him round gw12 or so.

Fixtures are poor, they have a new manager, he will likely cost 13.5 (if not 14m), and last but not least the leaders of fpl up until well into the season did not have rvp last year.

Putting rvp in your team day one is the ultimate chasing last weeks points except its chasing last year's points.

No, since Tottenham's enticing fixtures make Bale a must-have. If we keep Bale, 3 Chelsea and RVP in our team, I wonder whether we will even have enough funds to autofill our team.

Nolan - I think his gw 38 might still be stuck in the back of the minds of the Fpl gurus when it comes to prices.

He was 11th highest scoring midf and wen to 6.9m during the season. Won't be cheaper then 7m.

Based on people's rmts I think they will really struggle budget wise this year (as always).

If you want use the players that done well last year it will be difficult to stay within budget. The trick is to find next years fellaini/michu/Snodgrass/nolan as due to their good seasons the previous year they will not be good value this year. The same thing happens every year in fpl but a lot on here don't seem to have realised it for some reason.

Hull + CP rotation? No thank you.
And I wonder about what midfielders we are going to get at 6-4.5 .. Tonev, Noble, Ramirez ... I don't think having so many budget midfielders is a good idea, after we saw last season how midfielders play a big part these days.

        I absolutely agree.

I didn't take hits for Studge in GW37 and Nolan in GW38, just because i chickened out and felt i need those points to maintain my rank. In the end, both of them scored a hatty and i ended up with 2 reds 🙁

Nah his team was in a bad way for the DGW so he decided to go for it. Then took a further 12 & 8 pt hits to get ready for the second end of season DGW.

Basically he went all in. But yeah the gray arrow would've been a bit of a shock.
