Sky Sports Fantasy Football 2013/14 Goes Live

As many of you will have noticed, the Sky Sports Fantasy Football game was officially launched earlier today, allowing us the opportunity for some early pre-season tinkering. We plan to analyse the player list in detail over a series of upcoming articles but for now, here’s a heads-up on some rule changes that have been introduced for 2013/14.

No Monthly Transfer Restrictions
Fantasy managers now have the opportunity to essentially wildcard a brand new team at any point during the season, providing they have an adequate number of trades left. Last season, we were, somewhat frustratingly, afforded a maximum of just five transfers per calendar month but this time round there are no restrictions – we can utilise our 40 transfers as we wish over the course of the campaign.

Save Points for Keepers
A crucial addition to the scoring system. Previously, stoppers were handed out points for clean sheets alone but their appeal is set to improve after Sky Sports decided to reward their endeavours between the sticks – for every five saves a keeper makes, he will now receive couple of bonus points; definitely something to consider when mulling over their merits. We will be adding save points bonus to our stats tables in the members area to allow analysis of how keepers would have fared over the past two seasons – we will update you when that’s available.

Captain Changes
A very significant rule change which offers the chance to accrue points from two captains in any given Gameweek. The Sky Sports game differs from the “stick or twist” scenario familiar to most Fantasy managers – you pick up double points from both your initial skipper and his armband replacement. If your first captain plays on a Saturday, you can, however, only switch the armband to someone with a match on Sunday or Monday – ie, a player with a fixture on a different day within the same Gameweek. You can change captain only once per Gameweek.

Other New Introductions
A “Shortlist” feature, similar to the Watchlist in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), allows to pencil in our potential targets for the games ahead. There’s also an Assistant Manager on hand to offer advice if required, where there will also be Awards on offer for our respective teams’ performances which could potentially lead to prizes – Sky Sports are looking to release more details later in the month.

It’s also worth noting that an app for Apple and Android devices is also available to ease those team changes whilst laden with supermarket bags. Handy.

The prizes have also be enhanced, with no less than £30,000 on offer for the winner this time around.

Scout Leagues
Thanks to our endeavours last season – which saw Fantasy Football Scout top of the Private League rankings – Sky Sports are now offering a £1,000 prize for the Fantasy manager who finishes in top spot in the FFS league this time round; enough motivation for most to get involved, surely.

The league name is “FFScout” and the code is 8000112 : we’ll get these posted in the middle column of the homepage.

Finally, we’re also considering the idea of an official money league this season. In another new feature, Sky Sports offer the option of £2, £5, £10 or £20 entry fee per person in a private league – we’ll have more on this if we decide to roll out an official Scout League. Give us your thoughts on this.

If you have any feedback on your early experiences with the game, be sure to post them in comments below. Already today we’ve passed on some issues regarding performance which have been examined and addressed due to feedback here.

As mentioned, we’ll be rolling out regular articles in the pre-season to guide your early decision making, including an appraisal of the player list and some position by position analysis.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

So who's going to be Sunderlands no.1 keeper then - Westwood or Mannone? Which prices do you expect the two to come at?

I guess preseason will give an indication, but otherwise, anyone's guess. If I had a gun to the head, I'd say Mannone.

Leads to a very unbalanced team in FPL.

      4.0, 4.0 = 8.0

      4.0, 4.0, 4.0, 4.0, 4.0 = 20

      Bale (12.0), Hazard (10.0), Cazorla (10.0), 5.0, 4.5 = 31

      RVP (12.5), Aguero (11.0), 6.0 = 30.5

In DGWs you could actually get 3 captains if a DGW team has its first match on a Sunday. If Chelsea/Hull got moved to Sunday as a televised game you could have this scenario:

    Saturday: Bale(c) against Palace
Sunday: switch(c) to Hazard/Mata etc for Chelsea against Hull
Midweek: not possible to switch captain but the Chelsea player is in action again vs Villa.

It's chris Pearce.. Key his name in the search and his interview on the game comes up. He favours a gk you'll never change and mid to budget defenders that'll play regularly.

With the change in capt rule I think it's key to have a big hitter from each the top 4 as one will almost always play on sun or mon. Two good capts each week will be key to this. Rvp, ageuro, bale, haz for example and then work around that.

It'll be interesting to see the keeper stats re:saves as the expensive clean sheet big hitter may become a cheaper save magnet, thus freeing up some much needed funds (imo the prices look steeper this year).

The rotations take it to another level of complexity for me. One that may have short circuited the brain. I'm liking the Villa/Brom one for defense, though. I think Villa will do much better this upcoming year, all the newbies wi a full season under their belts.

Just read SpiderM4tt's article on Fiso.
Great read, some good stuff to ponder.
But did anyone else notice GW26 he said he initially had the arm band on Gerrard even though he never had him that week? Am I missing something? 😉

On a more important issue though. What do people think of his gw1 plan and the wildcard gw2?
It should be an option again this season. It obviously paid off as he won, but I wonder if he is planning it again.
I cant see me doing it.

    Anyone considering it?

Then 2 chelsea out by gw3 and bench 1.

I read the same thing, and was similarly surprised. I had not even considered wildcarding in gw2, but I have to say, the possibility is intriguing.
Villa's fixtures will probably convince me not to use such a tactic, but it would present several advantages. Without the wildcard, loading up on Chelsea assets is almost useless, as they have a very difficult fixture the week after (mun), so hits might be necessary to transfer them out. Also, the early wildcard allows managers to jump on any bandwagons immediately, thus building team value right away.
Reading the whole article, he was able to navigate up to the winter wildcard without too much bother, just taking one or two hits. Easier said than done, to be sure, but far from impossible.

      This is something to consider.

There is a huge tendency for PL teams to buy foreign players without any great focus on lower league players. Cardiff have just spent £7.5m on a Danish striker who to be honest I'd never heard of and I've no doubt Jordan Rhodes could do just as good a job. Remember the last great Danish striker in the PL? - good old Bendy!

I'm a Rovers fan too. He needs to go and not waste his talents in Blackburn. Rovers wont be back in Premier League until they get 'in house sorted'. He would fit into so many teams, make them instantly better. Can't believe no one has come calling with a decent offer...The way Rovers do business they would accept half of what THEY paid and call it a result!

Rat is in most people's teams.

Luna is dirt cheap if he gets in the starting lineup.

Turner, Santon, Shaw all look good value.

In the sky game, Cazorla, Bales and Gerrard's prices all stick out as very reasonable for big hiters, considering the totals they amassed last year.

Some players like RVP, Aguero, Torres, Bentekke and Hazard seem a little over-costed in comparison.

Could do, but you seem to be paying for that potential from the offset in comparison with the aforementioned. You would have thought Cazorla/Bale would cost more then Mata for example!

RVP & Bale are absolute must haves in the Sky game because of it's condensed price structure at the top end.

Here's a tip. Compare players relative prices on the Sky game against the FPL's when they're released. I know there's a difference in scoring but it will highlight the value players on Sky. Cazorla and Hazard stood out like sore thumbs last pre-season.

As I read it, Howard Kendall is suggesting in his new book that Rooney might return to Everton sometime but not yet. Before that he is likely to remain at United, unless another big club is prepared to match his current contract. I don't see any mention of any plans to exchange him for Baines.

When I pulled the dead crow from the bottom of my bricked up chimney stack I knew I was suffering from many different problems.

The first was the fact i had to come to terms with the crow that I just witnessed die for my lack of empathy at a time I could of saved his /her life.

The second was the herbal smoke that was drifting out of my chimney through the hole I had chiseled out, to belatedly try to save the life of the crow ref. "above"..

Just a had quick look at the Sky Sports game for Byran Ruiz. He is a 7.8 priced striker. Which is a bit of a bummer.

I was hoping for a cheap FPL price tag of 6.0ish and reclassification to a MID. Would have nearly been a mid price lock for me. The man is all class, and if he and Berb can stay for I can see him scoring pretty well this year.

Back to the drawing board it seems.

No because there where players in the SKY game that were classified different to the FPL game, so maybe that drawing should be put on hold. Both on price and reclassification opinions can be dissected.
