Scout Report – Allan McGregor

Steve Bruce moved to solve Hull City’s goalkeeping dilemma earlier this week with the acquisition of Allan McGregor from Turkish side Besiktas on a three-year deal. The 31-year-old makes his way to the KC Stadium for an undisclosed fee and his arrival continues the recent spending spree which has also brought Curtis Davies and Ahmed Elmohamady to the club:

With last season’s number one David Stockdale now back at parent club Fulham, Bruce has been desperately scouring the market for a first-choice stopper. Although the Tigers have been linked with the likes of Kaspar Schmeichel and former Wigan man Chris Kirkland during the summer, McGregor admitted to the club’s official website that he’s been aware of a possible move for a number of weeks now:

“I got a call a while ago about the interest from Hull City and things progressed from there. Holidays stalled things a little bit, as they do at this time of year, but everything is done now and I’m just really happy to be here. I kept an eye on what was going on back here while I was playing in Turkey and I actually watched the last few minutes of Hull City’s game against Cardiff on the final day of the season – it was exciting. I’ve had a few chats with the manager here and I really had belief and confidence in what he was saying about the club. The chance to play in the Premier League is also a massive thing and I can’t wait to get started here.”

The History

A product of the Glasgow Rangers youth academy, McGregor’s career began back in 2001-02 with a couple of appearances for the first-team at the age of 20. He failed to play a single minute of the following treble-winning season and after featuring four times during 2003-04, spent a couple of years on loan at St Johnstone and Dunfermline. By 2006-07, however, he was installed as number one at Ibrox and picked up the Players Player of the Year Award as a result of his displays between the sticks under Paul Le Guen.

McGregor played 196 times over six seasons as the ‘Gers first-choice keeper, winning 11 major honours over his time at the Govan club, before making his way to Besiktas last summer after Ally McCoist’s side were relegated to the Scottish Third Division. Over a single season in Turkey he produced five clean sheets in 26 matches (his replacement managed three clean sheets in eight matches by comparison) and helped his side to a third place finish before Bruce clinched his signature earlier this week.

On the international stage, McGregor has turned out for Scotland Under 21s on six occasions and has also received 29 caps for the senior side. Although his heroics between the sticks have been crucial to Scotland at times, his overall number of appearances would surely be greater if he hadn’t been banned for over a year due to alcohol-related “multiple breaches of squad discipline” back in April 2009.

The Prospects

McGregor certainly seems guaranteed starts for the season ahead and as a first-choice stopper for one of the three promoted teams, can be expected to be priced in the budget bracket across the Fantasy games. Given that each of last term’s main promoted keepers came in at 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), a similar price for the Scot looks on the cards, then.

Looking at their defensive displays in the Championship in 2012/13, the Tigers registered 16 clean sheets last term (10 at home, six away), though questions remain over whether Bruce’s 3-5-2 system may be picked apart in the top-flight. While plenty of saves are expected, McGregor’s Fantasy potential could also be determined by Ahmed Elmohamady’s classification in the Fantasy games – the Egyptian produced three goals and nine assists from a right wing-back role and, if listed as a defender, will surely offer us the most appealing route into Bruce’s backline.

For those eyeing up the Hull keeper as a possible rotation option, the opening schedule has certainly been kind to the promoted club. Their first six home games welcome Norwich, Cardiff, West Ham, Villa, Sunderland and Palace to the KC in a run that takes us up to Gameweek 12 – as mentioned in a previous article, Hull and Palace alternate home/away across the entire season, though for those looking for a short-term fix, West Brom, Norwich and West Ham offer up a strong goalkeeper combination over the opening six fixtures of the season.

Hull's home fixtures certainly offer appeal, but I'll take a 4m defender over a 4.5m keeper.

Will consider at £4.5m but prefer Speroni or Marshall for save points. Think us cheapie defence gurus will have to have one of them 3 keepers though.

I've tried to find evidence of first team starting defenders that were 4.0 at start of season, and it seems very difficult; i think that there may have been only one defender priced at 4.0 that was a first-team starter last season (Carl Jenkinson) and he was only a guaranteed started until Sagna returned from injury. There may be others, but evidence for that is difficult to come by.

So hard to call. They all mix it up a bit over the long Championship season, the bring in new players and change tactics foe the premiership.

      However...

In the Sky game, Hobbs or Chester from Hull, Taylor from Cardiff, Delaney, Parr and maybe Ward for Palace...

A very interesting article, but I think he won despite that tactic, not because of it. His Reading players didn't do much in GW1. He made a reasonable but not amazing start, but it was his strong finish plus a bit of luck that won him the title. Winning needs a lot of skill, but also a bit of luck too.

With Van Ginkel's signing about to go through, a discussion between me and a friend came up. We were talking about his chances and about how he'll do undre Mourinho. He says he'll do well as Mourinho is a good coach for younger players, while I on the other hand can't think of a single young player apart from Varane, that actually got a decent chance by Mourinho.

I even think Mourinho is the worst possible coach for young players that want decent playing time. What do you think?

That would be quite a significant factor in this theory! I just really think that Mourinho could build a team around him, in his first spell he went all out to get Drogba in, and this time around he has a similar player already in the squad.

Barton is still a QPR player. He was loaned to Marseille, not sold. If he had been sold to a foreign club, then perhaps the ban might possibly not have applied.

Suarez won't be moving to another PL club. He'll either stay at Liverpool or move abroad. It's the English media that he says he objects to, not Liverpool FC who have always strongly supported him (perhaps a little too strongly at times).

They are just putting 2 and 2 together and making 5. Most unlikely to happen, and certainly not at the price suggested. The Torres transfer was driven by Torres himself wanting to go to Chelski, but Liverpool held out for a ridiculously high transfer fee (and then unfortunately blew too much of it on Andy Carroll). The Suarez case is different - he has said at the Confederations Cup that he might be interested in a move to Spain to escape the English media, but has expressed no desire to move to another PL club.

What are the chances of Michu coming in as a MID again this year?
I'm guessing he'll be priced 8.0, 8.5. Will this deter anyone away from the big man?

    Evening Lads,

Bear with me lads on this one but I've been looking at short term cheapo attacking trios where 2 of the 3 play in any GW. The idea I've got behind it is to find the best possible fixture route for 2 cheapos for 7 GWs, allowing you to sit on them knowing they have the best chance to succeed while we wait for the Puncheons/Sterlings of next season to emerge. You never know, you may hit on one or two of them with the trio from the start 🙂 . I've filtered the clubs to players I think will interest the community and should come in less than 6mil and as a trio cost no more than 16.5 mil. I have also put an example trio of players in that keeps you to a 3-4-3.

You could say it is Uber Attack? 😉

    So here they are;

    AVL(4)/CPL(4)/SOT(6)
    Tonev(5.5)/Williams(5)/JRod(6) Total 16.5
    (ars+che/wba)/(SUN/stk)/(SUN/nor)/(NEW/WHM)/(nor/SWA)/(sot/CPL)/(hul/SWA)

    CAR(5)/HUL(5)/NOR(4)
    Cornelius(5.5)/Brady(5)/Redmond(5) Total 15.5
    (whm/EVE)/(NOR/hul)/(EVE/SOT)/(hul/CAR)/(new/AVL)/(ful/WHM)/(NEW/AVL)

    CAR(5)/HUL(5)/WBA(4)
    Gunnarrson(5.5)/Brady(5)/Long(6) Total 16.5
    (whm/SOT)/(NOR/eve)/(EVE/SWA)/hul/CAR)/(new/SUN)/(ful/WHM)/(NEW/AVL)

    CAR(4)/HUL(5)/WHM(5)
    Cornelius(5.5)/Brady(5)/Jarvis(5.5) Total 16
    (whm/CAR)/(NOR/new)/(EVE/STK)/(hul/CAR)/(new/EVE)/(WHM/hul)/(NEW/AVL)

    FUL(5)/HUL(5)/NOR(4)
    Ruiz(5.5)/Brady(5)/Redmond(5) Total 15.5
    (sun/EVE)/(NOR/hul)/(new/SOT)/(WBA/CAR)/(new/AVL)/(CAR/WHM)/(STK/AVL)

    FUL(5)/HUL(5)/WBA(4)
    Kaca(5)/Brady(5)/Long(6) Total 16
    (sun/SOT)/(NOR/eve)/(new/SWA)/(WBA/CAR)/(new/SUN)/(CAR/WHM)/(STK/AVL)

    FUL(5)/HUL(5)/WHM(4)
    Ruiz(5.5)/Brady(5)/Jarvis(5.5) Total 16
    (sun/CAR)/(NOR/new)/(new/STK)/(WBA/CAR)/(new/EVE)/(CAR/WHM)/(STK/AVL)

    HUL(5)/NOR(3)/SOT(6)
    Brady(5)/Redmond(5)/JRod(6) Total 16
    (EVE/wba)/(NOR/SUN)/(SOT/nor)/(CAR/WHM)/(new/AVL)/(WHM/CPL)/(AVL/SWA)

    HUL(5)/SOT(6)/WBA(3)
    Brady(5)/Ramirez(6)/Mulumbu(5) Total 16
    (wba/SOT)/(NOR/SUN)/(nor/SWA)/(CAR/WHM)/(new/SUN)/(WHM/CPL)/(AVL/SWA)

    HUL(5)/SOT(6)/WHM(3)
    Brady(5)/JRod(6)/Jarvis(5.5) Total 16.5
    (wba/CAR)/(NOR/SUN)/(nor/STK)/(CAR/WHM)/(new/EVE)/(WHM/CPL)/(AVL/SWA)

The reason for it is purely to give you more money to have more big hitters. Combine it with an Uber Defence and you should be laughing all the way to the bank.

I run an example squad out with my personal favourite HUL/SOT/WHM.

    5 - 4.5 (9.5)

    5 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4 (22.5) Uber Defence

    12 - 10 - 10 - 5.5 - 5 (42.5)

    11 - 8.5 - 6 (27)

    Total 100 mil

Believe or not, It still can't get you Bale and RVP 😯 but should get you Bale, Hazard, Walcott, Aguero and Sturridge in this example. 5 Big Hitters from the off

    Cheers 🙂

      great work Tommy, again

although I partly agree with Wild Rover it's something I've examined myself especially the Hull, Norwich, Saints one, though I'm looking at Koren, Ramirez and RvW I think (but Redmond/Snodders and J/Rod could work)

But as it stands right now I'd be more inclined to go with a 2 way midfield rotation, something like Ramirez and Jarvis.

If the prices come out and we can get enough big hitters in without these measures then I completely agree with you JK. However, for people who want RVP/Bale/Aguero and Chelsea DGW coverage for example, this might be the way to go.

You could do it with 3 midfielders meaning you will always play 3-4-3

Yeah. If there are perceived bargains in the 6.5 to 7.5 bracket then this format doesn't really let you have them unless you think they can play every fixture and include them in the other 5.

Thinking about it, if there are these players the Uber Attack could mean you don't need an Uber Defence

am likely to double up on Norwich and WBA.Saints.

              History suggests 2 things

              1) The big guns don't start being CS machines until after Jan when the business end of the season starts, and we'll have a wc and more cash to play with then

              2) There's always 1 or 2 uber defences that churn out CS in the first half of the season, like Swansea and Newcastle 2 years ago or Stoke and WBA last season. If you can find the right ones early.

Completely agree JK. We should also be able to gain more TV by being able to get on more big hitters as they are ones that get transferred in first.

Also, if a Michu pops up early, how easy is it to downgrade one big hitter to accommodate him than having to potentially shift finds around to get him if you've spread the cash about

JK I wouldn't go near wba due to their poor run of form after their initial good spell at the start of last season.

For me clarke is your typical no2 and not a manager at all. He did well with the squad he inherited and pulled off a coup (which probably kept him in his job) with bringing in lukaku on loan but they turned into a shambles as the season wore on and minus lukaku (or with even) I don't think he is capable of turning them around.

I don't. That example was RVPless but basically the format above gives you 51.5 mil to spend on 5 players in whichever combination that pleases you.

      Nice one Tommy.

Initially ridiculed it when I read the first couple of sentences, but the more I think about it, the better it looks. Definitely going to try this out. Just need those prices o be released!

Still too modest to Hot Topic too.

        Yep.

It's not crazy. Not far off it but not crazy. Its all going to come down to prices.

One thing it might allow you to do is pile on the DGW and still retain your WC for March for example

a couple of the guys in ML believe in cheap defences. They see no points value in defence, I agree, expensive defenders are a luxury that should be invested in only when it looks profitable for returns

Why pay 6m for 2 points when you can just as easily pay 4-4.5 and use the cash in attack.

Stats back it up as well mate. Ubers all round 🙂

Going to wait for the prices, but there are dozens of Uber defences if your willing to double up

Was just wondering because you will need to check that you don't get too many match ups. I can't check this without dictating which Uber Attack to have

BTW i didn't explain, the number next to the club is the amount of times you will play that player from that club.

I also made a mistake. It won't keep you to a 3-4-3. You will need to have a trio of midfielders to keep to a 3-4-3. Might be the way to go if you want RVP, Aguero, Cavani

        Thanks Declan.

Be careful if you do that you don't get too many match ups for the first 7 GWs. That's one thing I can't check without dictating the trio to have.

I like the theory. As you say, good for bidding time until the genuine budget prospects emerge.

But... Attacking players are even less dependent on fixtures for their returns than defenders are. And three cheapies is a bit unreliable for my liking.

I think with the prices, we are all going to have 3 budget. It not that budget either really. The only price point you're omitting is the 7 to 8 million bracket as you could have a 6.5/5/5

By the quality of the rest of your thinking, you had me at "Evening Lads".
I'm looking forward to the next posts if Cavani, Higuain, Heno sign, and a confirmation that Suarez stays in PL. My guess is that most people would want to fit 2 heavy hitting strikers like RVP and Aguero, have 2 heavy hitters in the mid and finding the next Michu and Fellaini for the remaining midfield spots. e.g. coutinho, mirallas, aspas, heno. I think there's gonna be a lot of talent and exciting players in the midfield - midprice bracket this year.

        Cheers Professor.

If the transfer rumours are correct, then people may want three big hitting front men and a Uber Attack would allow it.

        9.5 GK rotation

        22.5 Uber Defence

        16.5 Uber Attack

        10 Higuain
        11 Kun
        11 Cavani
        12 Bale
        7.5 Oscar

      Great work again...

Have you considered that any exit strategy from the uberD/uberA approach will be complicated? Taking the example of 5 big hitters and the rest of the team made up of cheapies, what happens if, afyer 5 weeks, you decide that RvP is essential? Because there are no mid priced players to downgrade, you will have to sacrifice TWO big hitters in order to afford RvP...

That may not be the end of the world, of course. But my point is that without any mid-priced players, you will have less flexibility when a change is warranted.

        Thanks.

Completely agree. For sure it is a riskier strategy. What you could do is have 4 big hitter and a punt player around the 7-8 mil bracket. Someone like HBA/Snodders. This will give you the budget to start with RVP or give you an easy option to fit him in.

I'm all for the advocate of balance within a squad to be able to react quicker

Fire brigade phones Arsene Wenger in the early hours of Sunday morning...
"Mr Wenger sir,the Emirates is on fire!"
"The cups man! Save the cups!" replies Arsene.
"Uh, the fire hasn't spread to the canteen yet, sir"

First time (properly) on here since the season's end. Sky game already open! Think I'll still give it a miss though, one game is more than enough for me. 😉

Off -seems to have gone pretty quick strangely enough.
