Scout Report – Marco Van Ginkel

Having already acquired Andre Schurrle from Bayer Leverkusen, Jose Mourinho returned to the summer transfer market last week to snap up highly-rated Dutch youngster Marco Van Ginkel from Vitesse Arnhem. The 20-year-old arrives at Stamford Bridge on a five-year contract for a reported fee of £9m, with the Blues beating off the challenge of Ajax Amsterdam in order to secure his signature:

In an interview with the club’s official website, the new boy revealed his delight after clinching the move to Stamford Bridge, following an impressive showing for Holland in this summer’s Euro 2013 Under 21 tournament:

“I spoke with the manager and he had some good words for me. If a trainer like this says these things to you it makes you really proud and I am happy to work with him. I’m very happy to be here at such a nice club with great players. I am really happy, the stadium is good and the training ground is fantastic. I know about all the players and will meet them on Monday. I expect a lot, I’ve watched matches and it’s really nice to be here.”

The History

A product of the Vitesse Arnhem youth academy, Van Ginkel made his debut as a 17-year-old back in April 2010. His first year at the club saw him afforded just four appearances (three of those off the bench) before he established himself as a first-team regular the following season. Over the next two years, Van Ginkel produced 10 goals and six assists from 56 league matches but significantly stepped up in performance last season, with eight goals and 10 assists from 33 appearances helping Vitesse to a fourth place finish in the Eredivisie – as a result he was voted Dutch Football Talent of the Year, an award afforded to players under the age of 21.

On the international stage, Van Ginkel has represented Holland at Under 19 and Under 21 level a total of 18 times, scoring on three occasions and supplying a pair of assists. He has also made the step up to the senior side and was handed his debut in a friendly against Germany last November.

The Prospects

Standing six foot one, Van Ginkel’s sound positioning, allied with an ability to break quickly from the back whilst in possession, suggests he may be more suited to the role of a deep-lying playmaker in a 4-2-3-1 but his recent goal record highlights the Dutchman’s versatility. An ability to feature as the most advanced central midfielder in a 4-3-3 looks beneficial to Van Ginkel’s game time under Mourinho – intriguingly, reports in the Guardian suggest the Chelsea boss is eyeing up a return to the latter formation, which was the foundation for his successful stint at the Bridge first time around.

Given the multitude of attacking talents currently available to Mourinho, there’s a fear that the Dutchman may be no more than a bench-warmer but, with next year’s World Cup in mind, the midfielder admitted he sought assurances over game time from his new manager before signing on the dotted line:

“I want to play games and not only sit on the bench – that’s what I hope for. I want to play in games at these great stadiums and hopefully be important for the team, whether it is from the bench or from the start…Everybody wants to go to Brazil. ‘You have to play’ – that’s what Louis van Gaal has said to players. I think I can play games and I think the Premier League is higher than the Dutch league, so you can learn more physically and technically, and develop. That’s why I am here.”

Nevertheless, with Ramires, David Luiz, Frank Lampard, Michael Essien, John Obi Mikel and Oriol Romeu to compete with in central midfield, and with Juan Mata and Oscar surely ahead of the Dutchman for the role in “the hole”, a fair degree of uncertainty remains over Van Ginkel’s likely number of starts. Indeed, the theory is that Van Ginkel has been purchased with the long-term in mind as a successor to Lampard – his clever runs into the box from deep and penchant for a long shot place him in the perfect position to become the veteran’s successor.

Priced at a lowly 3.6 in the Sky Sports game, Van Ginkel should come in around 6.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). He may be far more budget-friendly than many of the Chelsea midfield but, at present, it’s difficult to make a real case for his consideration here, in spite of his undoubted potential. The pre-season friendlies should afford us a window into Mourinho’s thinking over the next few weeks – while a regular role in the double-pivot would be worthwhile in the Sky game given his cost alone, whether he’s ready to step up as a viable FPL asset is currently open to debate.

Chelsea seems to keep on buying youngsters from all over the world.
I suppose lot of them will be packing their bags again before season starts and going on loan somewhere?
What I mean is that wasn't there some rule to have enough english/academy players in squad when season starts?
Wasn't this at least part of the reason for city buying Sinclair last year?

I can be horribly wrong tough, but it's your chance to shine then 🙂

Home grown players is the key rule. That can apply to players from abroad that come here young. Fabragas was a home grown player for example.

I guess I was wrong about Schwarzer yesterday. I never thought he would sign as a backup for Chelsea with the WC next summer. He could easily lose his spot in the Australian team, perhaps opening up a spot for Galekovic? Surely there was some reasonable team where he could be first choice even though he is getting a bit old. Seems like a bizarre move for him to make unless he couldn't find anywhere else to play first choice.

Schwarzer is more nailed on for Ausrtalia than RVP is for UTD, he could go on holiday for the next 12 months and he'll start for the socceroos....... Smart move, get paid lots to sit on the bench, maybe play the odd cup game to keep sharp and be fully rested for Brazil.

I've been wondering this. It's probably because we're only in League, FA Cup and League Cup. Given our normal Cup form there will probably be 5 cup matches he would play over the season. Chelsea will probably play 20 more matches than us over the season so I guess more chances to play.
He's probably been offered a higher wage than what we were offering too, and there's no need to move house.

Hot topicing something is more for discussion. Stickies like this are just for interesting pieces of information. Who's to say it won't be relevant. Where will he end up? What will this mean for transfers and loan moves at PSG and possibly involving transfer targets and their players. Its a good bit of news that PB has found swiftly.

Sevilla is not the best club in Spain. They used to be a good team under Juande Ramos but are no way a decent team. So when the likes of Mancity cough up cash to the tune of 20 million plus for the likes of Negredo and Navas, does it say a lot about the disparity in the Spanish and British leagues??

Yes, they are getting decent players who form a bit part of their respective National sides but if we are talking about the Premier League as the best league in the world, surely the top clubs in England should be going for "Superstars", shouldn't they? One could make a case for squad depth and all that. But the question is how many of these players would walk into the best sides of the world?? Whereas on the other hand, the possible exports like Bale and Suarez would walk into most of the sides in Europe.

Other trends like the players prefer to go Madrid or Barca or Bayern rather than coming to the Premier League surely means that its about time that the PL teams concentrate more on the Champions League? Man United have been great in the league but really poor in Europe. So have Man City. So what will it take for the PL to attract the ABSOLUTE BEST talents in the World to the PL?

No explaining the money City spend on players. They must have the worst negotiators on the planet.

It could become a worrying trend if the likes of Bale, Suarez and Rooney move in the next year or so and are not replaced with equal quality.

So it looks like Wanyama is a done deal to the Saints. Absolute powerhouse, good in the air, good in the tackle, great positional sense, great shot, good passing ability...

I think he will play further up the field, more like the attacking Yaya.

Might go into the team if he is reasonably priced. I'm saying 6/6.5?

from your description, sounds like he has not weakness at all (except maybe pace/dribbling)

so he has no weakness, and has the amazing attributes above,
sounds like that is buffing him up a bit, or he is actually one of the best around

I wouldnt touch him from an FPL POV. Good news for the SOTON defenders having him sitting in front. Be wary though he can disappear from games and isnt the finished article yet. He's got some amount of potential and needs a good strong manager to show him the ropes

Assuming he's motivated and not just a mercinery, there's no doubt he'll add you midfield which was already class.

Most centre mids coming up against Wanyama and Spiderman are going to know they've been in a game. Really looking forward to this season.......

Southampton midfielder prices next year will be close to:

        Schneiderlain - 6.5
        Lallana - 6.5/7
        Cork - 6
        Ramirez - 7
        Wanyama - 6/6.5
        Ward-Prowse - 5.5

Good comments above, he's young so has improvements in him, but happy to recruit someone that has shown potential in the CL.

I was thinking of doing a little analysis of player's performances when they have Europa commitments vs when they don't. This would be my first effort at any kind of substantial survey. 1. Would this interest anyone? 2. Any ideas of who should be in the survey - top performing person in each basic from each season? Same individual (obviously won't always ben available)?

    Cheers.

One big problem you'll have is that squads tend to get so heavily rotated during Europa League group games that you may struggle to find enough data.

Our first xi from the Brugge away match which was pretty important for our qualification, probably contained 3-4 starters for the subsequent PL match:

      01 Krul
      02 Coloccini
      06 Williamson (S Taylor - 58' )
      34 Tavernier
      08 Anita
      20 Bigirimana (Cabaye - 72' Booked )
      22 Marveaux
      24 Tiote
      25 Obertan
      23 Sh Ameobi
      28 Sa Ameobi (Amalfitano - 83' )

Could be interesting for players like Bale last season though who I believe wasn't rotated for them.

Even Nile Ranger played in Europa for you didn't he? No chance of predicting line ups or any sort of analysis for Europa League.

Came of the bench at least one ... it was good for players like Obertan but it didn't lead to any gametime in the PL.

The price of Marco Van Ginkel in the Sky game is undoubtedly a mistake as the next cheapest midfielder is 4.0 million and they are complete no hopers, I would expect to see this rectified and a price of between 5.5 - 6.0 given.

No the prices remain the same throughout the season. He is useful as an almost sacrifice slot to free up cash for the rest of your team but as I say I think they will update his price before the season starts.

I don't see how they can change it D1sable, 2.3% of teams have him in, which would almost certainly put them over budget if the price went up.

I reckon he has to stay the bargain buy. IF he plays.

They will just alter his price by taking the site down for maintenance or something but I agree I don't know how this will effect the teams with him already picked, maybe just a pop up message or email informing people of the adjustment. Sloppy work from Sky....

I had RVP from the get go last year. However, I reckon Rooney will have a great run at the beginning of the season due to Moyes coming in and all the speculation. I find Rooney is a very reactive player and this, for me, will turn into FF points

On the other hand, if Rooney bears a grudge against Moyes for suing him, he might be grumpy, leading to fewer FF points, or he could warm the bench if the enmity is mutual.
