Moving Target

Moving Target – Antolin Alcaraz

Just one day after acquiring Arouna Kone from former club Wigan, Roberto Martinez plundered the Latics’ first-team squad once again by picking up centre-half Antolin Alcaraz. The 30-year-old penned a two-year deal at Goodison and arrives on a free transfer, after his contract at the DW expired earlier this month:

In his first interview with the club’s official website, the Paraguayan admitted that the chance of working with Martinez again was fundamental to his decision to sign up:

“I know him really well and he knows me very well also. We had a very good relationship in the three years at Wigan and I want to continue that. Nothing is going to change, he is very professional. I have learned many things with him. He gave me a lot of support when I came here, when I was new in this competition. It is totally different and he gave me many lessons on how to adapt to this type of football. Thanks to him I adapted quickly to English football. “

The History

Alcaraz’s career began in Argentina with Racing Club back in 2001 but after failing to feature for the first-team, he was farmed out on loan to Italian outfit Fiorentina – the Serie A side were soon declared bankrupt, however, forcing the centre-half to return to his parent club without a single appearance. Finally picked up by Portuguese side Beira-Mar at the start of 2003, he went on to score four times in 81 games before being snapped up by Belgian club FC Brugge in 2007/08.

During his time in the Jupiler League, Alcaraz produced five goals and four assists from 63 league appearances, with his displays catching the eye of then-Wigan manager Martinez back in 2010. Having played 34 times during his first season at the DW, Alcaraz managed just 35 games over the following two seasons due to injury, with his absence at the back proving crucial as the Latics slipped out of the top-flight last term.

The 30-year-old was a late starter on the international stage – making his debut in 2008, he has turned out for his country on 27 occasions and found the net twice.

The Prospects

While there’s no denying his talents, Alcaraz’s propensity for picking up injuries is a real concern. Over his time at Wigan, the Paraguayan was sidelined with thigh, rib, groin and hamstring problems, with a torn groin muscle keeping him out of action for six months last term. Clearly, Martinez is a big fan, though, and the new boy’s arrival is perhaps another sign that the Spaniard intends to roll out his preferred 3-4-3 formation on Merseyside.

With Phil Jagielka and Sylvain Distin looking nailed-on at centre-half, Alcaraz should likely get the nod over Johnny Heitinga if a three-man backline comes into operation but with Martinez looking to go on the attack, it remains to be seen whether Everton can mirror the defensive resolve instilled by David Moyes in seasons gone by – a move away from a four-man defence may signal a downturn in clean sheet potential.

Price-wise, Alcaraz will set you back 5.3 in the Sky Sports game and 2.0 in the Sun Dream Team, while a cost of around 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) seems on the cards. Our view of the Toffees backline will mainly be determined by Seamus Coleman’s classification across the Fantasy games, though; listed as a defender by Sky Sports and The Sun, a similar situation in FPL would surely see the Republic of Ireland international become one of the most popular defensive options in the game, with Martinez expected to field him on the right of the Everton midfield four. While Coleman would struggle to mirror Leighton Baines’ overall points score on the opposite side of midfield, his much kinder cost may well prove better value of the pair, with the latter expected to come in around the 7.5 price mark after finishing the previous campaign as top scoring FPL defender.

Undoubtedly, the opening schedule has been favourable to Alcaraz and company. Home games against West Brom, Newcastle and Hull, allied with trips to Norwich, Cardiff and Villa in the first nine Gameweeks, offer the chance of a successful start for Martinez at Goodison. While the Paraguayan may be instrumental in a probable change of system, there’s an irony that, with Coleman’s possible out of position appeal and Baines’ attacking consistency to contend with, he’s likely to fall far from Fantasy radars for the season ahead.

The Australians appealed for LBW against Trott and the on-field umpire gave him not out. The Australians referred it to the television umpire who reversed the decision. Trott had actually got a thin edge onto his pads. England later protested to the ICC, who admitted that the television umpire had made a bad mistake and issued an apology to England.

It is many years since most batsmen used to walk in such situations. But not all batsmen did, so those who did were praised for their honesty and good sportsmanship.
Some smart ones might have walked most of the time, especially if the situation was not critical. Then when the situation was more critical they might not walk and the umpire might incorrectly give them not out because of their reputation.
Before the advent of referrals to a television umpire, the Aussies had mostly not walked for many years, the argument being that they had to accept the umpire's decision when he wrongly gave them out, so they were entitled to not walk when the umpire wrongly gave them not out, and most international teams now take the same attitude.
I seem to remember that there was an exceptional case not too long ago when an Aussie batsman did walk before the umpire had given his decision, but he was strongly criticised for it and did not do it again.

The exceptional case I was thinking of was 10 years ago in a semi-final against Sri Lanka in the Cricket World Cup. Adam Gilchrist walked despite knowing that the umpire would have given him not out, but many of his team-mates were livid and turned on him for his supposedly needless show of honesty.

The age limit was reduced to 21 for the 1978 championship and it has remained so since. To be eligible for the campaign ending in 2011, players need to be born in or after 1988. Many can be actually 23 years old by the time the finals tournament takes place; however, when the qualification process began (late 2009) all players would have been 21 or under.

Any Carroll or Demba Ba up top for London I'd say.. and Hazard over Cazorla.. I don't like him in the bigger games.

I've not found one I'd call essential TM. I think given the cost of the top ones, the money is better spent on top mids or forwards.
Depends how the games turn out. If I'm wrong it'll be an early WC or chunk of transfers.

Who said women footballers can't be sexy?

      https://www.google.ie/search?q=milene+domingues&client=ms-android-hms-vf-ie&espv=1&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sboxchip=Images&sa=X&ei=bKLgUZCvMMee7AaurYHQAQ&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAQ&biw=360&bih=567&sei=fKLgUcrLKauO7AaWtIH4Dw#biv=i%7C18%3Bd%7Clw76pynguG_9JM%3A

Maybe to make women's sport more marketable and thereby more profitable they should only allow players who are sexy to compete? This could end up leading to women being able to earn more comparable amounts to the mens sports.

Seriously tm I think you missed the point. Women's sport will never be able to compete with mens on skill level as the athleticism is not comparable. Up the sex appeal and you differentiate it from the mens and it becomes attractive for other reasons.

The only reason women's tennis has taken off is due to the hotties like hingis, kournikova et al that came through in the late 90's early naughties. They were not quite pushed through on their looks but maybe tennis should look at it too? I mean come on who watches womens sport for the competition?

Next you will want another version of Lingerie Football (American Football) where they are dressed in shorts & bras.

Hingis was a number 1 so that helped for starters & womens tennis has always had its share of beauties.

No point having a discussion on it, don't think we will find middle ground.

First time I ever see United play live in person and Wayne's gone home from a little hammy tweak

yeah but i think its better for him to get on a new challenge, i mean he won everything with united, since ronaldo left he was THE man, than RVP came and took his place, i feel he should go somewhere and get back to the player he was and maybe help england get passed the group stages... 😀

Anyone got any (good) news about Cardiff?
I've been told we have 25M to spend... (admittedly I'm over the moon about the great Dane signing)
it'd appear as thouigh we're too busy looking for a bargain when we desperately need to sign some defenders...
    Leon Barnett coming back?

please any(somewhat reliable) news is appreciated
