Moving Target

Moving Target – Antolin Alcaraz

Just one day after acquiring Arouna Kone from former club Wigan, Roberto Martinez plundered the Latics’ first-team squad once again by picking up centre-half Antolin Alcaraz. The 30-year-old penned a two-year deal at Goodison and arrives on a free transfer, after his contract at the DW expired earlier this month:

In his first interview with the club’s official website, the Paraguayan admitted that the chance of working with Martinez again was fundamental to his decision to sign up:

“I know him really well and he knows me very well also. We had a very good relationship in the three years at Wigan and I want to continue that. Nothing is going to change, he is very professional. I have learned many things with him. He gave me a lot of support when I came here, when I was new in this competition. It is totally different and he gave me many lessons on how to adapt to this type of football. Thanks to him I adapted quickly to English football. “

The History

Alcaraz’s career began in Argentina with Racing Club back in 2001 but after failing to feature for the first-team, he was farmed out on loan to Italian outfit Fiorentina – the Serie A side were soon declared bankrupt, however, forcing the centre-half to return to his parent club without a single appearance. Finally picked up by Portuguese side Beira-Mar at the start of 2003, he went on to score four times in 81 games before being snapped up by Belgian club FC Brugge in 2007/08.

During his time in the Jupiler League, Alcaraz produced five goals and four assists from 63 league appearances, with his displays catching the eye of then-Wigan manager Martinez back in 2010. Having played 34 times during his first season at the DW, Alcaraz managed just 35 games over the following two seasons due to injury, with his absence at the back proving crucial as the Latics slipped out of the top-flight last term.

The 30-year-old was a late starter on the international stage – making his debut in 2008, he has turned out for his country on 27 occasions and found the net twice.

The Prospects

While there’s no denying his talents, Alcaraz’s propensity for picking up injuries is a real concern. Over his time at Wigan, the Paraguayan was sidelined with thigh, rib, groin and hamstring problems, with a torn groin muscle keeping him out of action for six months last term. Clearly, Martinez is a big fan, though, and the new boy’s arrival is perhaps another sign that the Spaniard intends to roll out his preferred 3-4-3 formation on Merseyside.

With Phil Jagielka and Sylvain Distin looking nailed-on at centre-half, Alcaraz should likely get the nod over Johnny Heitinga if a three-man backline comes into operation but with Martinez looking to go on the attack, it remains to be seen whether Everton can mirror the defensive resolve instilled by David Moyes in seasons gone by – a move away from a four-man defence may signal a downturn in clean sheet potential.

Price-wise, Alcaraz will set you back 5.3 in the Sky Sports game and 2.0 in the Sun Dream Team, while a cost of around 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) seems on the cards. Our view of the Toffees backline will mainly be determined by Seamus Coleman’s classification across the Fantasy games, though; listed as a defender by Sky Sports and The Sun, a similar situation in FPL would surely see the Republic of Ireland international become one of the most popular defensive options in the game, with Martinez expected to field him on the right of the Everton midfield four. While Coleman would struggle to mirror Leighton Baines’ overall points score on the opposite side of midfield, his much kinder cost may well prove better value of the pair, with the latter expected to come in around the 7.5 price mark after finishing the previous campaign as top scoring FPL defender.

Undoubtedly, the opening schedule has been favourable to Alcaraz and company. Home games against West Brom, Newcastle and Hull, allied with trips to Norwich, Cardiff and Villa in the first nine Gameweeks, offer the chance of a successful start for Martinez at Goodison. While the Paraguayan may be instrumental in a probable change of system, there’s an irony that, with Coleman’s possible out of position appeal and Baines’ attacking consistency to contend with, he’s likely to fall far from Fantasy radars for the season ahead.

Couldn't help but notice that all these players play for very strong clubs in their respective leagues, they're going to be hyped.

And players who play in leagues you don't regularly watch that are hyped up give you rose-tinted glasses on that player, because you only hear good things.

With all due respect, I don't agree with your list at all, it looks like you picked Jones and Nastasic because they're both young and start for one of the Manchester clubs. I don't see any promising young stars from non-title contenders in your list. There are lots of very good young players out there; but it looks like you just pulled 10 out of the large pool and pointed out that only 2 are in the BPL.

They are so many different players you could add to this "list", that's kinda my point. Like I said, huge pool of talent among European Leagues and I certainly don't think the BPL is lacking in it. You can't really narrow it down to a top 10; the likes of Gotze, Neymar + Alaba are head and shoulders above most I think but some would disagree.

It looks like you've just posted your 10 favourite young players and kind've stated it as a fact, which I'm sure wasn't the intention. Most, if not all people will choose the 3 aforementioned players in their top 10 lists but from there it's all a matter of opinion really.

Don't personally see how Phil Jones, Januzaj make that list, though. Januzaj still has a long way to go to make this list, quality as he may be, and if my memory serves me right - yet to make a first-team debut. A bit premature to include him, imo.

Interesting to see how Laudrup uses him. Especially with the possibility of Michu playing upfront(where he was so successful last season!) and the Europa League also being a factor.

Barring my doubts on his gametime in the league, and considering the kind of transfers that happen at Swansea, i think he'll be a decent signing for them!

      Cheers!

I think Redmond will be nailed-on.
Pilkington will rather be in competition with Olsson, who can play OOP as well - thus can play in place of either Garrido or Pilkington.

'' With Van Wolfswinkel looking set to be handed the lone forward role and Robert Snodgrass nailing down the right wing berth, Redmond should offer competition to Anthony Pilkington on the left and Wes Hoolahan as the most advanced midfielder behind Van Wolfswinkel. Bearing in mind his side notched just 41 times last time round, Hughton is in dire need of extra firepower in midfield – Hoolahan scored three times from 33 appearances (28 starts), while Pilkington was just a little more prolific with five strikes in 25 starts. ''

: But after the Olsson signing was done, I think Redmond has been bought in as a replacement for Hoolahan, who just hasn't been quality enough.

    Word.

Not sure if it's been noted already, but some new signings have been added in Metro.

In the otherwise pricey striker department for example, there's:

    Anelka 7.5
    Cornelius 7.5
    Sanogo 7
    Helenius 7
    Altidore 7
    Deulofeu 6.5

And I particularly like the look of Kone at 7.

They had no new signings on when the game opened, but I put together a pretty decent looking XV. Now that the cheaper newbies are up could be a world of tinkering.

The whole. £10m Snodgrass thing threw me at first. Why make a player id only vaguely consider that price?

But having looked at some budget options I've actually got two teams together that I really like . Started with caz, a good striker and working g backwards from there. Chelsea pricing tho is a concern. Very little value compared to the likes of man city.

Yes Snodgrass, probably the leader of the pack of some very odd pricing.

Imagine if you will, a very long weekend team pricing meeting which decends into an alcohol soaked Sunday. After which panic ensues and the work experience kid with no interest in sport is given a page of pricing to fill in, late on Monday morning.
The Metro team all assuming someone else has checked his work.

      Alcaraz 4

      Rat 3.5

    Roberge 3.5
    Diakite 3.5
    Rat 3.5
    Luna 3
    Muniesa 3
    Amat 3

Bound to be some real bargains amongst those. What do you reckon?

I'm not familiar with the Metro game but given his fixtures, Rat looks like a bargain.

I doubt there'll be many teams without him GB.

If Everton do play a 343, then Alcaraz could be a bargain at 4.0!!

Gamble time Teddy. Just three big hitters for me I think. I want a fairly balanced team and that looks about the only way.
      Oh and RVP.

Can you cut and paste this into your last post Teddy. Keep them all together for the Stickie.

        Done.

Neil Taylor at 2.5 looks like the biggest bargain.

My first draft has him, Brady and Dobbie as the budget contingent.
