Moving Target

Moving Target – Antolin Alcaraz

Just one day after acquiring Arouna Kone from former club Wigan, Roberto Martinez plundered the Latics’ first-team squad once again by picking up centre-half Antolin Alcaraz. The 30-year-old penned a two-year deal at Goodison and arrives on a free transfer, after his contract at the DW expired earlier this month:

In his first interview with the club’s official website, the Paraguayan admitted that the chance of working with Martinez again was fundamental to his decision to sign up:

“I know him really well and he knows me very well also. We had a very good relationship in the three years at Wigan and I want to continue that. Nothing is going to change, he is very professional. I have learned many things with him. He gave me a lot of support when I came here, when I was new in this competition. It is totally different and he gave me many lessons on how to adapt to this type of football. Thanks to him I adapted quickly to English football. “

The History

Alcaraz’s career began in Argentina with Racing Club back in 2001 but after failing to feature for the first-team, he was farmed out on loan to Italian outfit Fiorentina – the Serie A side were soon declared bankrupt, however, forcing the centre-half to return to his parent club without a single appearance. Finally picked up by Portuguese side Beira-Mar at the start of 2003, he went on to score four times in 81 games before being snapped up by Belgian club FC Brugge in 2007/08.

During his time in the Jupiler League, Alcaraz produced five goals and four assists from 63 league appearances, with his displays catching the eye of then-Wigan manager Martinez back in 2010. Having played 34 times during his first season at the DW, Alcaraz managed just 35 games over the following two seasons due to injury, with his absence at the back proving crucial as the Latics slipped out of the top-flight last term.

The 30-year-old was a late starter on the international stage – making his debut in 2008, he has turned out for his country on 27 occasions and found the net twice.

The Prospects

While there’s no denying his talents, Alcaraz’s propensity for picking up injuries is a real concern. Over his time at Wigan, the Paraguayan was sidelined with thigh, rib, groin and hamstring problems, with a torn groin muscle keeping him out of action for six months last term. Clearly, Martinez is a big fan, though, and the new boy’s arrival is perhaps another sign that the Spaniard intends to roll out his preferred 3-4-3 formation on Merseyside.

With Phil Jagielka and Sylvain Distin looking nailed-on at centre-half, Alcaraz should likely get the nod over Johnny Heitinga if a three-man backline comes into operation but with Martinez looking to go on the attack, it remains to be seen whether Everton can mirror the defensive resolve instilled by David Moyes in seasons gone by – a move away from a four-man defence may signal a downturn in clean sheet potential.

Price-wise, Alcaraz will set you back 5.3 in the Sky Sports game and 2.0 in the Sun Dream Team, while a cost of around 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) seems on the cards. Our view of the Toffees backline will mainly be determined by Seamus Coleman’s classification across the Fantasy games, though; listed as a defender by Sky Sports and The Sun, a similar situation in FPL would surely see the Republic of Ireland international become one of the most popular defensive options in the game, with Martinez expected to field him on the right of the Everton midfield four. While Coleman would struggle to mirror Leighton Baines’ overall points score on the opposite side of midfield, his much kinder cost may well prove better value of the pair, with the latter expected to come in around the 7.5 price mark after finishing the previous campaign as top scoring FPL defender.

Undoubtedly, the opening schedule has been favourable to Alcaraz and company. Home games against West Brom, Newcastle and Hull, allied with trips to Norwich, Cardiff and Villa in the first nine Gameweeks, offer the chance of a successful start for Martinez at Goodison. While the Paraguayan may be instrumental in a probable change of system, there’s an irony that, with Coleman’s possible out of position appeal and Baines’ attacking consistency to contend with, he’s likely to fall far from Fantasy radars for the season ahead.

Is anyone excited by the rumour that Zlatan Ibrahimovic might be bought by Citeh if PSG buy Cavani?

I know there was an anonymous vote on this a couple of weeks ago, but I'd like to see the top players' initial opinion:

Which are you most likely to purchase for GW1:

    1. Van Persie & Bale

    2. Bale & NO Van Persie

    3. Van Persie & NO Bale

    4. Neither, I'm a hipster.

I'm most definitely NOT a top player but looking at the early fixtures list any of Aguero, Sturridge and whoever starts for Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs are more appealing than RVP and would undoubtedly cost less.

      Balenaldo? He's a must have 🙂

No doubt you already know this but it is of course hugely dependant on prices and what kind of team you can get if you decide to include both.

Bale will be cheaper so he'll most definitely be in my team.

RVP would be nice to own but not at the expense of my whole teams. Rooney potentially being out is an interesting development, but there look to be plenty of alternatives for around 3 millions less than RVP.

Maybe someone has already raised this, but just in case....

Following D1SABLE's revelation yesterday that if you sub your captain on SKY, you get their points and the incoming without using your captain change, I think that it doesn't work....

As then you would have to change your captain from a Sunday to Monday to make it work, and then teams that have played on Monday don't play on Saturday.

Therefore you could only take advantage of this once, then you would be locked in for Sunday and Monday captaincies from then on.

Looking back, how did you chaps start last season?

    I had
    Cech
    Kompany Ivanovic (C) ShawX Gibbs
    Sinclair Pienaar Ramires Carrick
    Suarez Aguero

    Subs: Ruddy Vlaar Hoolahan Graham

Unbelievably Ivanovic raked in 48 points! And don't ask about Ramires, Sinclair and Carrick. It was my first season 🙂

      Ivanovic (c) - Hangeland - Fabio
      Michu - Yaya - Ramires - Bale
      Rooney - Cisse - Tevez

de Gea - Rangel - Ireland - Cuellar

Yup Ivanovic did it for me too. Looking to do the same this season, if the DGW is on.

I thought QPR would do well though. And that Stephen Ireland would have a blinder. 😯

Why? He is there to get as many runs for England as he can within the rules of the game. The rules allow him to stay.

Imagine the uproar if England lost because he HAD walked? There are two sides to every coin. Poor captaincy from Clarke to throw away his pocket ace too early and easily.

Quick poll (this in relation to the sky game) and a cheap filler midfielder. Who do you predict will get the most points over the season.

A: Derek Boateng (Tackle bonus occasionally)
    B: Cabral (Tackle bonus occasionally)
C: Marco Van Ginkel (Limited play time)
D: Yala Bolasie (Potential attacking returns, poor side)
E: Ashkan Dejagah (Looked good towards the end of season but stats suggest limited returns)
F: Charlie Adam (Blinding first season in prem, steadily downhill from then)

I've gone with F but do you think you can get away with a 'filler' in the sky game?

Yes, as long as they play. Its in order to have more big hitters and therefore more captain exploits!

This suggests that Cabral looks pretty confident he'll be a regular.

You wonder if he goes overboard on fitness at the expense of other aspects of the game. I think he wants them to run teams into the ground rather than outplay them.

As a Brighton fan I'd say stay clear. Didn't work out for him there. He's at best an ok Championship option. For the Prem League I can't see him getting too much.

I wouldn't be surprised if GW1 is not a DGW after all. Last season Chelsea were in the FIFA Club World Cup as well as the UEFA Super Cup, which meant that they had to reschedule a match from GW17 as well as the one from GW3. This season they have more flexibility.

Elmohamady is interesting? Why him over a def mid like Cabral or D Beoteng who may get interception, tackle points? Can't see Elmo getting much of those. Also not sure Hull will be attacking enough for him to get many completed passes in the final third.

A bit of transfer news, Lennon has now conceded that Gary Hooper is likely to leave Celtic. Would love if QPR got him, however could be a FPL nuggett were he to go to Norwich, http://www.football365.com/celtic/8821467/SPL-Celtic-boss-Neil-Lennon-concedes-striker-Gary-Hooper-is-set-to-leave?

As long as we get similar money to what Southampton paid for Wanyama i'll be happy.

Does he choose PL football or wages?
