In Development – KPI Tables – Preview Movie

The latest addition to our members area is almost ready to go live. The “Key Performance Indicator” tables or “KPI” tables for short, are designed to use a series of key stats to allow our members to track form or change in performance in players.

For a while now we’ve been looking for a method of using our data to enable our members to assess player form – or at least track some key statistics that can be identified as indicators of form that may influence future Fantasy Football output, whilst also going some way to explain a recent rise or decline.

Firstly, we created tables that track the frequency of key stats or match events which indicate player performance such as “Minutes per shot on target” or “Minutes per touch in the box”. We’ve also included defensive indicators so that users who play Fantasy games where defensive actions come into play – (like Sky Sports and Play On) – can get further guidance from the tables. Indeed, stats such as “Minutes per Block” and “Minutes per Clearance” will immediately help those looking to identify defenders who are set to fare well in the new Fantasy Premier League bonus system.

All these statistics are useful in themselves when you consider that you can sort on any stat and slice the data by a Gameweek range or by home and away matches. However, the key ingredient we’ve added is the ability to create a second comparison table in the background and view tabular results that track the percentage change between the two tables. In this way, we can begin to get values that indicate form or perhaps a change in role and position. What you’ll get are results such as…

“Michu’s frequency of shots in the box increased by 23% when he played at home”

or even…

“Michu’s frequency of shots on target reduced by 38% over the final eight Gameweeks compared to the Gameweeks 1-30.”

These tables and this ability to compare frequency data can be used in a multitude of ways in order to find trends and provide quantitative data on queries such as:

  • Which players improved the most for the key indicators from the 2011/12 season?
  • Which players suffered the biggest decline in the key indicators away from home compared to home matches?
  • Just how much did Juan Mata decline in the key attacking indicators over the last eight Gameweeks compared to the rest of his season?
  • Which of the Chelsea midfield showed improvement over the same window?
  • How was Robin Van Persie’s key indicators affected by Wayne Rooney’s omission from United’s lineup?

Our members will be able to use the numbers produced to help them assess how a change in position affected a player, or even just to study which players, over the “last four Gameweeks”, have improved the most over the key indicators, since last season or earlier in the year. From now on, when we think Michu has dropped off in form, we can check and get percentage values for key stats to assess whether this is really the case and, at the same time, assess if any of his team-mates have benefited.

We’ll be using the KPI tables to generate new members articles and to add further analysis to our regular members articles. We’ll be rolling out our first members article, inspired by the new KPI data, later this week to help guide your initial squad selection.

For now, take a look at the preview movie below to see the tables in action. We hope to have the KPI tables available in our Members Area later this week.

For those who missed my post earlier. That would be everyone as I pretty much just insulted you all in it so it got downvoted 😀

Anthony C. Constantinou: pi football: a Bayesian network model for forecasting association football match outcomes - showed that home advantage is directly related to the distance travelled by the opposition.

In all derby matches there is a full turnout of fans, no travel fatigue and relative ease around the fixture. For these reasons two derby teams do not gain any home advantage during these matches.

Conversly, when Southampton travel to Newcastle, none of their fans travel and the players will be fatigued from the journey. As such, Newcastle will have a significant advantage during this match, which is outweighed by the reverse fixture.

This explains one of the fundamental flaws with the H/A rotation predictions on here. Many matches be so easily categorised. If I remember rightly, Wigan appeared to be relatively unaffected by match location, probably due to their lack of a home atmosphere.

That's interesting, Ginks. I've never been a fan of H/A rotation myself, think I'm beginning to see why. There are other anomalies too, such as Fulham playing lousy away from home, another team played better away (was it Tottenham?), certain teams having 'bogey teams' that have the hoodoo over them for no obvious reason; and Liverpool who seem only to turn up against top four teams and routinely come unstuck against lower opposition.

Most prem games are sold out, but not necessarily with a decent proportion of the vocal away fans.

When you travel in a plane do you feel rested and ready to play 90mins of football the moment you get off? Or do you want to find the hotel quick so you can have a nap?

Ha ha yeah I've been tinkering since it opened a lot. Anelka caught my eye at that price he was in my team but a few people on here seem to think he will be rotated with Long and could be used as an impact sub, if I knew he was assured of starts I would have him over JRod and Koren over Thomas which I had originally

    Clyne Collins Coleman (Turner) (Chester)

    Hazard Bale Walcott Silva (Colback)

    Berbatov Sturridge Lambert

Don't really like Berbas fixtures at the start so may swap with carrol. Not a fan of sturridge but he seems the best value at that price for now until Benteke joins spurs or the transfer window throws up a diamond. Gambling on Silva returning to his 2011/12 for under Pellegrini 😀

Love the Midfield, If SIlva hits form could be a good differential.
Berba takes penos so always a chance he could score in harder fixtures.

Hi guys. I've been wondering how to manage to benefit from the chelsea dgw and still be able to cope with the uncertainties surrounding the beginning of the season.

This is the team I came up with. Any thoughts?

    Boruc / Mannone/Westwood

Luiz / A. Cole / (Tiendalli / Shaw / Baker) these last three can easily be changed.

    Mata / Dempsey / Silva / Mirallas / Thomas

    Aguero / Lambert / Aspas

The idea is to either WC or do Luiz + Mata --> Bale + 4.0 in first two gw.

    Any thoughts?

Those thinking of going without Chelsea coverage in the beginning of the season. Think again.

Mourinho was unbeaten in his first eight league games when in his first, triumphant title-winning season; in 2005/06 they won their first nine games; in 2006/07 they won seven of the opening nine.

At Inter Milan in 2008/09 they won 13 of their opening 15 league games; the following season, when they won the Champions League, they started the season with nine wins from 11 Serie A games.

When he moved to Real Madrid, Los Blancos won 10 of their opening 12 games in La Liga in 2010/11; 13 in the opening 15 the following season; even in his final, disastrous season at the Bernabeu, Real Madrid won eight of their opening 12 games.

new manager hard to say who he will prefer. obviously hart is nailed on so him and a 4.0 2nd keeper isnt a bad strategy, play hart and never think about it the rest of the season. but that said pellegrino might not be too fussed about clean sheets and go more attacking, which will hurt any of city's defensive prospects.

Any chance the developers can sort the Members Ticker so that it works properly on iPad (and, I assume, other tablets). The problem is, you can't move teams up and down, which is a very useful feature. Since tablets are taking over now, this is a bit of an issue.

The wolf, looks like hes a fast starter !!! But if he was any good ,would better teams than Norwich not have snapped him up?

On 3 June 2011 he moved to Sporting CP, signing a 5-year contract on a €5.4 million deal,[6] the club signed him in a leverage by aid from Sporting Portugal Fund and Quality Sports Investments. He scored his first goal for Sporting on 10 September 2011 against Paços de Ferreira in a 3–2 win. On 15 September 2011 he scored in the 2–0 win against Zürich in the UEFA Europa League, scoring another goal on 19 September against Rio Ave, and two more five days later against Vitória de Setúbal. He scored another goal against Lazio on 29 September 2011. His impressive goal scoring form led to him being awarded the SJPF Player of the Month for September 2011. His goal scoring tally didn't stop there as he scored yet another two goals in a third round cup game against Famalicão. He scored 25 goals in all competitions during the 2011–12 season.[7]

I was all for Coleman but not so sure anymore.
      Reason:
-Martinez's poor defence record as a manger
-potential of a 3-4-3 formation, is he guaranteed to start?

Alcaraz makes little sense to me. If he ends up not starting then you have to waste a transfer on him.
Yer he might be great value but it's the sort of thing a lot of people might end up regretting.

The way the squad stands at the mo if he does play 3-4-3 (which I doubt) then the mid 4 would be Baines felli, Gibson, Coleman. Alcaraz would then play. I just think he wants 4-3-3 and he's played that already in the first friendly.
