Scout Reports

Scout Report – Gary Hooper

Norwich boss Chris Hughton made his seventh signing of the summer transfer window earlier today by acquiring long-term target Gary Hooper from Glasgow Celtic. The 25-year-old arrives at Carrow Road on a three-year deal – though the club have the option of another year – for a reported fee of around £5m and follows the likes of Ricky Van Wolfswinkel, Nathan Redmond, Leroy Fer and Martin Olsson to the club as Hughton looks to push on from last season’s eleventh place finish.

In an interview with the club’s official website, Hooper revealed his determination to prove himself in England’s top-flight after a highly successful stint at Parkhead under Neil Lennon:

“There’s been a lot of speculation going back to January and I’m pleased to have finally put pen to paper and joined Norwich. I can’t wait to get down to work, to get training with the lads and working with the coaching staff. I knew Chris Hughton and Colin Calderwood from my youth days at Spurs so it will be great to be back working with them in the Premier League. I have scored goals at every level I have played at and the challenge of playing in the Premier League is really exciting to me.”

The History

A product of the Tottenham youth academy, Hooper was released by the north London club at the age of 14 back in 2002. His career got underway at Conference club Grays Athletic but, after scoring 20 times in 69 appearances, he was released again in the summer of 2006. Picked up by Southend United, he scored just twice in 32 appearances over two years and was farmed out on loan to Leyton Orient (four games, two goals) and Hereford United (19 matches, 11 goals) before Scunthorpe paid £175,000 for his services in July 2008.

Hooper’s eye for goal was instantly in evidence for Scunthorpe. A total of 24 goals in 45 league appearances in 2008/09 saw him voted Player of the Year and helped earn the club promotion to the Championship. The goals flowed once again the following season, with 19 strikes and six assists in 35 matches persuading Celtic to shell out over £2m in the summer of 2010.

Hooper wreaked havoc in his new surrounds and was the Hoops’ top scorer in each of his three seasons at Parkhead. In just 95 league appearances, he registered an eye-catching 63 goals and 24 assists, helping the club to a couple of league titles, with two Scottish Cups also accrued.

The Prospects

Having watched his side suffer back-to-back 1-0 pre-season friendly losses, Hughton has moved quickly to address a lack of attacking edge. While Norwich were decent defensively from a Fantasy perspective last term, chalking up 10 clean sheets, a 4-4-1-1 formation failed to harvest many goals – the Canaries found the net on just 41 occasions, a tally better than only Stoke (34) and relegated QPR (30).

The earlier arrival of Van Wolfswinkel had suggested Hughton would continue with his somewhat cautious approach and roll out a lone striker system once again but Norwich’s pre-season failings have perhaps led to a change of heart. Certainly, with over £13m spent on the pair, it’s fair to assume Hooper will now be expected to line up alongside the Dutchman in a 4-4-2, potentially handing Fantasy managers greater options amongst the Carrow Road squad.

Although the former Celtic star is a little more diminutive than Van Wolfswinkel (five foot nine to six foot one), Hughton’s new forwards have relatively similar attributes – both possess good movement in the box and a penchant for playing on the shoulder of the last defender – though Hooper’s renowned work ethic and link-up play may see him drop deep more often, with his unselfishness highlighted by that average of eight assists per season at Celtic.

Yet to be listed in the Fantasy games, a price of around 6.5 or 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) seems on the cards, bearing in mind that Van Wolfswinkel will set you back 7.0, whilst key creative force, Robert Snodgrass, is available for 6.5.

Hooper’s addition to the Canaries ranks now gives Fantasy managers something of a dilemma. While Snodgrass dominated the scene last term, there are now further options as we consider a kind batch of opening fixtures which has Hughton’s side play host to Everton, Southampton and Villa in the opening five Gameweeks, in addition to a trip to Hull. Given his eye for goal, Hooper looks a more than viable target as we assemble our squads ahead of the season kick-off, with his arrival sure to bolster the Canaries chances of improving upon last term’s dire scoring record.

Well by that logic we should all have 3 Chelsea and 3 Villa players ?
          No.
Villa have tough games and Chelsea have to play united in the 2nd GW and a blank in GW3

I like the Thomas and Aguero idea, with the rest of your team. Would that give you a 0.5m float to upgrade a keeper too? Otherwise, upgrade later when you've increased team value. It's a nice team then.

Yeah I may opt for Coutinho as well. I don't know all the prices off the top of my head but maybe downgrade Giroud? I'm a fan but I don't think he's going to kill it this season. Plus you have a better defense than me and I have Wally plus Bale, Hazard, and Coutinho (I think). I'm a sucker for a powerful midfield.

I would like 2 of those 3 I think, but Wally has earned his spot imo. Even when he was playing in his normal spot out right he scored. A lot. I have started to learn also that hits earlier in the season can be advantageous for generating funds, and you could have some bandwagon-ish options starting right away.

Not too bothered about 343 or 352 but history shows that 7 attackers is normally best. I tend to let the RMT tool decide my formation if it's not obvious, even if that means playing 4 at the back (which doesn't happen often, but does occasionally)

Different formations can work for different people as their goals are slightly different, or because of rotation, bench, injuries, etc. I try to be flexible and am open to changing formations on the fly if it really suits the situation. I don't know that many on here would say one formation conquers all. But I could certainly be wrong.

Still seeing the odd post on here with Rooney for DGW implications. Anyone considering that, wake up.

He might go to Chelsea by close of the window. But not until after Man Utd v Chelsea. Moyes can't have his first big game being a loss at the hands of a player he just sold. It would pile unnecessary pressure on him.

Too risky for me. I've got Wanyama as 5th midfielder, Rodriguez and Boruc too but I wouldn't rely on them. They're all last choice in each position.

    Right boys,

Double game week looming, this is my team:

    Migs Boruc

    Coleman Azpil Garrido Chester Parr

    Walcott Hazard Oscar Sterling Wanyama

    Sturridge Aguero Rodriguez

***After GW 1 it will be Aguero to RVP and Oscar to Kagawa.

    What do you think?

Sounds pretty good but I know naught.

So what is with all the Boruc love? What about Davis?? Is he SOT's backup keeper??

Boruc is first choice and I just fancy Southampton to perform this season. Their early fixtures should set them up with a bit of confidence.

Sterling has been on fire all pre season and only missed the second half of last season with a chronic thigh injury, you'll be signing him up after a couple of game weeks so should probably chill out on the exclamation marks.

Also, Aguero is only going in for 1 week.

How much game time do we think Anelka will get? His fixtures are pretty tasty from GW 1 to 5. Currently on Rodriguez but im having doubts

I'd have more doubts about Anelka if I'm honest. I can't see Shane Long losing his place.

what do you guys think of my team??

    Mignolet (Mannone)
    Ivanovic, Mert, Coleman, (Clyne/Collins)
    Bale, Hazard, Coutinho, Snoddy (Thomas)
    Lukaku, Giroud, JRod

    reasons:
Mignolet. easy choice. #1 GK @ LFC
Ivan/Cole still tossing up between the 2, im confident either will play both DGW1.
    Snoddy, great cheap choice.
Coutinho will be LFC's best this year.
not sold on Lukaku/JRod just yet. but are in so far.

Looks decent but Lukaku's position is unclear, Love the midfield. Attack is very weak though IMO.

Any Danny Graham lovers now he's at Hull, could be a gem at 5.5?

Gayle 5.0 > Graham 5.5. At least he is a better option for me rotating with my budget mid.

Hull don't seem to score too may goals, and Graham burnt most of us last season, myself included.

'Since he clearly looks after himself, I had no doubts.

'I have got one or two good contacts around the football world and I checked him out when he was at Juventus.

'The fitness statistics I got back was that he was one of the best trainers. He's one of the top performers in terms of fitness stats at Juventus. If you can do that at Juventus, you are fit enough for us.' - Clarke

We can pretty much rule his age out of the equation imo, if he is one of the fittest players at Juventus, we should have no worries about his pace and stamina for he first 19 GWs. FPL seems to have under-priced him due to a wrong assumption. But can we really pick him over Rodriguez given Southampton's fixtures and form?

Don't West Brom play a 4 5 1 though ? and he never said he was first choice and would not be rotated just that he was very fit

anyone initially going without City coverage? not having a City player scares me and the only 1 id probably get is Silva but how can you go without Hazard, Theo & Bale in your Midfield. hmmmm.

I'm not fussed about City coverage. It's a minefield and points are usually diluted anyway. I'm waiting and watching to see if an option emerges.

agree, although it would be a shame not to have City attack for GW2 & 3 - do you think we'll get a clear picture just from one gameweek?

      Finding it tough also.

Silva wasn't the same last season, but keep an eye on Toure. I watched city's friendly the other day and he played the furthest forward of the midfield 3 and had a couple of decent chances.

This friendly was without Silva in the squad though.

I haven't got any. I'm confident the big hitters I have will score the same or more as any City players.
