Scout Reports

Scout Report – Gary Hooper

Norwich boss Chris Hughton made his seventh signing of the summer transfer window earlier today by acquiring long-term target Gary Hooper from Glasgow Celtic. The 25-year-old arrives at Carrow Road on a three-year deal – though the club have the option of another year – for a reported fee of around £5m and follows the likes of Ricky Van Wolfswinkel, Nathan Redmond, Leroy Fer and Martin Olsson to the club as Hughton looks to push on from last season’s eleventh place finish.

In an interview with the club’s official website, Hooper revealed his determination to prove himself in England’s top-flight after a highly successful stint at Parkhead under Neil Lennon:

“There’s been a lot of speculation going back to January and I’m pleased to have finally put pen to paper and joined Norwich. I can’t wait to get down to work, to get training with the lads and working with the coaching staff. I knew Chris Hughton and Colin Calderwood from my youth days at Spurs so it will be great to be back working with them in the Premier League. I have scored goals at every level I have played at and the challenge of playing in the Premier League is really exciting to me.”

The History

A product of the Tottenham youth academy, Hooper was released by the north London club at the age of 14 back in 2002. His career got underway at Conference club Grays Athletic but, after scoring 20 times in 69 appearances, he was released again in the summer of 2006. Picked up by Southend United, he scored just twice in 32 appearances over two years and was farmed out on loan to Leyton Orient (four games, two goals) and Hereford United (19 matches, 11 goals) before Scunthorpe paid £175,000 for his services in July 2008.

Hooper’s eye for goal was instantly in evidence for Scunthorpe. A total of 24 goals in 45 league appearances in 2008/09 saw him voted Player of the Year and helped earn the club promotion to the Championship. The goals flowed once again the following season, with 19 strikes and six assists in 35 matches persuading Celtic to shell out over £2m in the summer of 2010.

Hooper wreaked havoc in his new surrounds and was the Hoops’ top scorer in each of his three seasons at Parkhead. In just 95 league appearances, he registered an eye-catching 63 goals and 24 assists, helping the club to a couple of league titles, with two Scottish Cups also accrued.

The Prospects

Having watched his side suffer back-to-back 1-0 pre-season friendly losses, Hughton has moved quickly to address a lack of attacking edge. While Norwich were decent defensively from a Fantasy perspective last term, chalking up 10 clean sheets, a 4-4-1-1 formation failed to harvest many goals – the Canaries found the net on just 41 occasions, a tally better than only Stoke (34) and relegated QPR (30).

The earlier arrival of Van Wolfswinkel had suggested Hughton would continue with his somewhat cautious approach and roll out a lone striker system once again but Norwich’s pre-season failings have perhaps led to a change of heart. Certainly, with over £13m spent on the pair, it’s fair to assume Hooper will now be expected to line up alongside the Dutchman in a 4-4-2, potentially handing Fantasy managers greater options amongst the Carrow Road squad.

Although the former Celtic star is a little more diminutive than Van Wolfswinkel (five foot nine to six foot one), Hughton’s new forwards have relatively similar attributes – both possess good movement in the box and a penchant for playing on the shoulder of the last defender – though Hooper’s renowned work ethic and link-up play may see him drop deep more often, with his unselfishness highlighted by that average of eight assists per season at Celtic.

Yet to be listed in the Fantasy games, a price of around 6.5 or 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) seems on the cards, bearing in mind that Van Wolfswinkel will set you back 7.0, whilst key creative force, Robert Snodgrass, is available for 6.5.

Hooper’s addition to the Canaries ranks now gives Fantasy managers something of a dilemma. While Snodgrass dominated the scene last term, there are now further options as we consider a kind batch of opening fixtures which has Hughton’s side play host to Everton, Southampton and Villa in the opening five Gameweeks, in addition to a trip to Hull. Given his eye for goal, Hooper looks a more than viable target as we assemble our squads ahead of the season kick-off, with his arrival sure to bolster the Canaries chances of improving upon last term’s dire scoring record.

Cahill also had words of praise for striker Romelu Lukaku, who spent last season on loan at West Brom.

The Belgium international scored twice in Chelsea's 8-1 thrashing of the Indonesia All-Stars and has four goals in total from the trip to Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta and Cahill has been impressed by what he has seen.

"He had a great loan spell at West Brom last season, has been flying in training and scored two great goals," added Cahill.

"I play against him in training a lot and he's a handful just with his pace and power. His finishing is great too."

It's not huge, but it's pretty prominent. Easily behind AFL, Rugby Union, Rugby League and Cricket though. It's the one-off nature of the events that made them so popular. 1st time Liverpool have been to Australia for example.

I don't think that is too risky tbh, Shurrle is a Mourinho signing so likely to feature heavily.. Whether he will outscore the like of Lampard is another matter...

To all those considering using their WC in gameweek 3. Are any of ye still going with the Mignolet and 4m goalkeeper combo?

The way I'm looking at it is if that you're using the WC after gw3, you obviously only need to plan for the first three weeks, so whoever is going to be the best long-term option doesn't matter. So it got me thinking that surely Mig and another keeper is a bad option to start off with.

Mig and 4m: Will set you back 9.5, and chances are you will get one clean sheet from the opening 3 games (I'm presuming here that at least one of Stoke or Villa will manage a goal)

Foster and Boruc: Costs the same amount, but surely an increased chance of overall cleansheets over these 3 weeks with 3 home games against favourable opposition

Boruc and Mannone: 0.5 cheaper than the above pairings, surely will get you one cleansheet at least with 2 home fixtures and a favourable away one

Boruc and 4m: You're presuming here Boruc is safe for starts, but this combo only costs 8.5. Only one home game here but all 3 against ok opposition. Might get one cleansheet with a bit of luck here

Thought folks? Have I missed anything?

Hi guys, first contribution here. I caught the FPL bug in the latter part of last season and that's where I found this incredible pool of knowledge. I want to start by thanking you for all of your contributions and figured I ought to start by offering some insight into my team before i ask for any specific thoughts on my FPL side.

Firstly, even as a Villa fan, im amazed at the high ownership of Baker. I know, he's only 4m but that may prove to be a complete waste with Villa most likely to play the following back 4:

    Lowton - Vlaar - Clark - Luna

(CB) Okore is probably the man pushing for first team action (and i'd love to see him in a Villa shirt soon). He chose Villa over Chelsea because of game time prospects, and looks full of potential. Baker also faces competition from Bennett as LB cover. Bennett was our first choice at LB last season and while he was far from the the finished article, Lambert stuck with him through some pretty dire performances - I just can't See Baker getting in unless we pick up a run of injuries and/or suspensions across the back.

Luna, however, makes a case for investment. I'd suggest that you think of Jose Enrique when looking for a comparison to his playing style. One to add to the watch list until he's proven his worth (and Villa have seen out our tough start to the season).

Villa's most recent friendly, in which Lambert played his first team for an hour before making TEN(!) changes should serve to highlight this.
    See: http://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/match-reports/crewe-1-aston-villa-5-5372764

At the other end, Wieman looks like one of the potential bargains of the season. He's almost certainly our first choice on the wide right of a front three spearheaded by Benteke. He produced a superb assist for the Belgian and his opening strike from outside the box serves as a reminder that the young Austrian has goals in his locker too (think back to Villa vs Utd for examples in big games). Bear in mind he's just recovered from a hamstring injury, he looks very sharp and full of confidence. To those considering Helenius as a route to Villa's front line, I'd strongly advise Wieman as a safer and more threatening option - and at just 0.5m more, he's got the bang for buck seal of approval.

El Ahmadi had a strong showing and, if he manages to hold on to a starting berth, could be the creative force at the heart of our midfield. Like Luna, one to watch, not start.

That is my opinion dude. It is clear to me that he might get at least 60 minutes in both games.Only fear is that he might be subbed at 59 minutes in the Villa game with a clean sheet imminent. For the man U game more minutes Guaranteed.
I have Ben 10. But best case scenario chelsea clean sheet, he gets subbed and Ben bangs in one late in the game.

power five (not again... 😕 ) for gw 1: bale, hazard, walcott, silva, schurrle/lamps

trumps the old power five imo though not sure how affordable it really is

Think I've sussed it, all set for DGW1

    Mignolet
    Merte Coleman Collins
    Bale Silva Arteta Hazard(c) Wanyama
    Lukaku Anelka

    Davies Gayle Clyne Chester

    6.0m bank.

    GW2 Lukaku>RVP
    GW3 Hazard>Coutinho

Then take a view on Chelsea/City/Pool as can only have two of those three premium players, but as Chelsea have a blank that should stop them rising so could likely get them back at cost. I've feeling a Coutinho/Hazard will be more productive than Silva but just want City covered for the first three games.

    Relax!

Wanyama is a great choice. Guaranteed starter and he's box to box so could chip in with a few extra points. Much better value than all of the 4.5 muck.

Yes. Schneiderlin served me well for 4.4m last year, young Victor will be a big player this year.

I like it apart from Arteta. Also, will you really want to get rid of Haz even though he's just got one blank? Especially for Coutinho who has Man UTD GW3?

Arteta is budget Arsenal cover, as I see no budget cover for City/Pool/Chelsea, so am having two of those as premium along with Bale/RVP. Have a soft spot after a one week punt at the back end last year and he scored a penno!

Prob have Coutinho for GW3, then decide to stick with him or Silva to get Hazard back for GW4. By then will be settled!

Reading yet more transfer speculation in the press, but no actual transfers to get excited about!

This transfer window so far has been all fart and no poo.
