Pre-Season

Friendlies Round Up – Wednesday

David Silva gets amongst the goals and Edin Dzeko is at the double as City hit Milan for five in yesterday’s Audi Cup clash. Christian Benteke takes his tally to four in two starts as Villa net five for the second match in succession, while Kevin Mirallas notches once again for Everton as Roberto Martinez rolls out a 3-4-3 against Italian giants Juventus.

Man City 5 Milan 3
Manuel Pellegrini’s side gave Fantasy managers a hint at what may potentially follow in the season ahead with a scintillating display against their Serie A opponents yesterday evening. Stevan Jovetic was handed his first start since joining from Fiorentina in the summer and was named in the first XI alongside the likes of Edin Dzeko, David Silva and Jesus Navas, while Javi Garcia and Joleon Lescott were afforded a chance to impress at centre-half in light of Matija Nastasic’s enforced absence.

Jovetic needed just three minutes to make an impact after teeing up Silva for the opener before full-backs Micah Richards and Aleksandar Kolarov added further strikes, with Jovetic once again claiming an assist for the latter’s goal. Edin Dzeko continued his strong form by bagging a brace – with Navas and Yaya Toure providing an assist apiece – to take his tally to four in the last three matches.

Pellegrini made five alterations after the break, swapping Jovetic for Alvaro Negredo at half-time, but his side failed to find the net again. Sergio Aguero was named on the bench after a recent injury but was an unused sub alongside the like of Vincent Kompany and Pablo Zabaleta.

Dzeko’s form and upturn in confidence is already clear under the new manager after an indifferent period with Roberto Mancini in charge. Pellegrini’s show of faith at the pre-match press conference will not only have been music to the Bosnian’s ears but will surely pique the interest of Fantasy managers, given his relatively budget-friendly appeal as a route into the City attack ahead of a kind run of opening fixtures:

“The future of Dzeko has been decided a long time ago. He’s a top striker and a starter and he will have a high level of performance like he did all the years he played in Germany. I have confidence in him and the players who came in are only support for a squad that needs to have every place doubled up with top players. So there is no problem with the future of Dzeko.”

Post-match, the City boss called for his side to improve defensively after they almost let slip a five-goal lead against Milan. City arrived at yesterday’s game having previously registered back-to-back clean sheets but Pellegrini seemed none-too-impressed with the resilience of what was, essentially, his second-choice back-four:

“It’s not normal that we can be beating Milan 5-0 after 30 minutes. But I didn’t like the last 15 minutes of the first half because I thought we relaxed before the end of the game and in football you can’t do that. It’s better that this happens now though rather than in the Premier League so we can sort out these things before it starts.”

Walsall 0 Aston Villa 5
Paul Lambert’s side hit five for the second successive match as they pick up pace ahead of the season kick-off. The Villa boss rolled out first-choice forwards Gabby Agbonlahor, Christian Benteke and Andreas Weimann in the front three, while Antonio Luna continues to look assured of his role at left-back after being named in the starting XI once again. With the visitors two goals to the good at the break thanks to strikes from Fabian Delph and Agbonlahor, Lambert made seven alterations to his line-up though afforded his front three until the hour mark before subbing them off. This gave Benteke enough time to notch his fourth goal in the last couple of matches – courtesy of a Weimann assist – before Jack Grealish and Gary Gardner completed the scoring late on.

With 10 goals in the last couple of games – albeit against lower league opposition – Lambert praised his charges as they gear up for a double Gameweek 1 away to Arsenal and Chelsea. The Villa boss also rolled out an injury update on a couple of new boys, going on to say:

“We play a passing game and we’re getting better and better. We definitely have goals in us, that’s for sure. It’s important if you can spread the goals around the team too, which we did. It could have been more. We were very good. It was pleasing that we kept a clean sheet too. We were solid throughout. We looked really good. The good thing was we were pressing throughout the game. We are getting better and better. There are a few weeks to go and it’s all about that Arsenal game….Hopefully Aleksandar (Tonev) and Jores (Okore) will maybe train Friday and then we will see how they are for the game. They are two big players for us who will hopefully come back shortly. Next up is Shamrock Rovers. We want to get more minutes under the belts of the players and hopefully get no injuries. Then there’s one more after that.”

Prior to the game, summer signing Luna spoke of his determination to nail down the left-back role this term. The former Sevilla man – who was the only Villa player to be handed the full 90 minutes last night – also started the previous match against Crewe and continues to look a cut-price alternative to Matthew Lowton for those looking for a cheap route the Villa defence, with a Sky Sports price of 4.0, compared to Lowton’s 5.7, particularly appealing:

“I feel I have the characteristics to play here. I think I have good athletic abilities – I am quick as a player and that is important in a division like the Premier League. But I believe it’s good for me. Training has helped massively too, it is very intense and great fun. All the ball work is intense but it’s really, really enjoyable. It’s so, so fun. Football here in England is very quick, very rapid. It’s a complicated league. For my own view, regarding my skills, it’s great that this league is fast. I still need to adapt to things, of course, and feel I am all the time.”

Juventus 1 Everton 1 (5-6 pens)
Roberto Martinez started with a 3-4-3 system for the first time this summer as the Toffees edged out the Serie A champions on spot-kicks. Leighton Baines recovered from a slight knock to take his place on the left of midfield, with Seamus Coleman fielded on the right and Marouane Fellaini and Darron Gibson in the centre. Kevin Mirallas and Steven Pienaar once again got the nod for the flank roles in the front three, though Martinez handed Victor Anichebe the chance to lead the line, having afforded Arouna Kone and Nikica Jelavic 45 minutes apiece in the weekend win at Blackburn. Mirallas – yet again – was Everton’s goal hero and continues to flourish in his new position, having scored for the third match in a row.

After the game, though, it was youngster John Stones who Martinez singled out. With Antolin Alcaraz omitted from the tour due to a hamstring injury, Stones was fielded in the back-three alongside Phil Jagielka and Sylvain Distin and impressed throughout, heading against the post earlier on before coolly converting a chipped sudden-death spot-kick in an assured performance:

“I knew he was going to do it because the last three he has taken in training he has done that. The question was could he do it after Andrea Pirlo and at his age. It was incredible and I thought it was an example of his performance. He was composed throughout and it was a very useful game for himself and (he could be) a very important ‘new’ player for us going forward.”

I don't think it's worth doing any more RMTs until we find out more about Bale.

Odds are he's gone, so I'd plan for it going that way.

Yeah that could make a difference.

Although Dzeko is proving a much more interesting prospect than before pre-season.

Djeko is a common one that seems to be trending here, less of a punt now Aguero is a unfit. I have picked Lukaku as well hes going to play at least one game, but hes not a garanteed DGW player. Aspas is a similar story to Djeko, unfit/suspended first choice strikers, but he is also not shown great preseason form like the likes of Djeko. All in all, good punts, but punts nonetheless.

            thanks for your input.
it seems pellergini will play two forwards, which is when dzeko does his best work,i also think he has better displays away from home, but with the creative players city have now and with that price, dzeko is hard to resist.

I`m more drawn to aspas since I cant see myself spending 9 on coutinho or sturridge with his lack of pre-season.

hmm you've almost persuaded me to get Dzeko at the irresistible price. If city are playing 2 upfront he's a great pick till Aguero comes back. I just feel that with the 40m hes spent on new strikers they're bound to get a good run at the expense of Dzeko.

Wait to see a few more results and formations. Martinez is tinkering a lot. If he plays 4 at the back Coleman won't play. 3-5-2 yesterday, he played and played well, but that was the first time.

Coleman will obviously get more opportunity to go forward in a 3-5-2 but he'll still push on in a 4-4-2. Martinez wants them to be flexible in systems they can play. I think they might concede more but score a lot more.

Because it's not really done, that's all done by the club. If a player comes out and says such things it's because either the club has allowed it or encouraged it. If Levy is really holding out for 120m, and Bale says he doesn't want to leave and then a bid is accepted and is sold there could be uproar from the fans.

Is it bad to have a substitute headache? Or good because of the DGW scenario.

Have a look at my team forecast line ups for GW1+2.

    GW1

    Migs
    Collins Cole Coleman
    Nolan Hazard(C) Walcott Silva
    Lukaku Aspas Giroud

    Subs: Mannone Mirallas Parr Burner

The headache I'm having is between playin Aspas or Mirallas for GW 1. I think Aspas is the better option with the Strong home fixture.

    GW2

    Migs
Collins Coleman (swap Cole for Nastasic or Zab depending on whether Nasty plays)
    Hazard/Walcott/Silva/Mirallas/*Nolan*
    Giroud/*Aspas*/*Lukaku*

Players marked with asterix I am unsure about starting. Lukaku scored a hat trick V United in the last game of last season so he's in with a great shout.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

Also, pick Mignolet over Jussi. Deviating here won't get you any points.

Dzeko doesn't have PL quality? Are you mad?! He's got a one in two record in the past two seasons at Man City (how many as a sub?) and a better than one in two record at international level.

dzeko score when it doesn't matter, but in fpl one or two gw he'll get a massive points but not so consistent.

trying to work Mirallas into my mid, currently got this lineup

    Migs/Marshall
Ivan, Coleman, Collins, Clyne, M. Turner
    Theo, Hazard, Coutinho, Jarvis, Brady
Lukaku, Dzeko, Negredo (filling Soldado's spot)

    1.5 in bank.

Conisdering swapping Migs and Clyne to Boruc and Toure (Toure to rotate with Coleman)

Last chance to join the FFS poster Leagues

Want to have a chance of joining a competitive league then click on the link. The idea is to have 5 classic leagues for FFS posters to test their skills against other FFS posters. The league spots will be determined by your previous best overall rank in FPL. To have a chance to join fill out the submission form embedded in the link.

    http://allthingsfpl.wordpress.com/2013/06/28/atfpl-leagues-for-ffs-posters/

The cut off Overall Rank as of last night currently stands at 11777. (This is 30 posters per league)

Don't worry if your rank isn't high enough to enter the 5 classic leagues as you can still enter the catch all league where everyone who has said yes to the catch all league in their response will be offered entry.

The closing date is midnight tonight so hurry up if you want to be involved. So far 245 posters are playing.

    Cheers 🙂

    Why I'm wildcarding immediately.

I've pondered this question over and over again, trying to determine what the 'best' strategy going into the game is regarding the wildcard. In season's past I have planned on not using it early, and always have as I either took the wrong punts (Boselli - I'm looking at you) or needed to get on board with the right players quickly (Michu).

Also, for your own research - see
http://fantasypl.com/2013/07/25/wildcards/ (a really good breakdown of when the top managers wildcarded)

tl;dr mostly either very early (GW 2 - 4) or the DGW in GW33
The most important stat to come out was that as you got to the 'better' players, the less they used the WC in the first couple GWs.

then there's this analysis by last year's winner:
    http://www.fiso.co.uk/viewarticle.php?id=535

tl;dr load up on the DGW week 1, enough people will for you to not want to be left behind.
My additional note: now that last year's winner has opened this theory up, more people will be going for it.

Ok - so the question becomes "does it matter?". Does it matter if I'm left behind if I am able to capitalise later on in the season. Now assuming that you can make as much out of the GW33 DGW as you could in this one then no - it doesn't.

So can you make more use out of your wildcard for a later DGW?

    Last year the DGW's were:
    GW1 Chelsea vs Reading
    GW16 Sunderland vs Reading
GW22 Chelsea vs Southampton (Jan WC available here)
GW23 Arsenal vs West Ham (Jan WC available here)
    GW26 Liverpool vs Swansea
GW33 Arsenal vs Everton, Fulham vs Chelsea, West Ham vs Man United
GW36 Chelsea vs Spurs, Man City vs WBA, Swansea vs Wigan

The big one to chase here was the one in GW33, specifically, you wanted as much Arsenal and United coverage as you could get.

GW16 wasn't overly exciting, GW22 and 23 you could Jan WC into. GW26 was a good one given that Swansea didn't take it seriously and GW36 was a nice triple but you would only really want to go deep into City.

Now most of these you are easily able to plan in advance for, you can hold over transfers and start bringing in the players you need from the big teams, and that's the rub. You can only really afford to load up on the big team side. You don't want to leave that DGW with 6 West Ham or Fulham players that you would need to get rid of. Conversely you probably already had RvP and Walcott/Cazorla - and potentially Baines/Felliani, and post that week you wouldn't mind an extra week or two of them as you adjust your team back to 'normal'.

GW1 will allow you to effectively wildcard before and after - allowing you to completely tailor your team to one fixture. And guess what - that fixture is Chelsea vs Villa. We know right now its a good one, whereas we have no idea how the dice will roll for the later fixtures.

This means for GW1 we can have 6 DGW players, and pick up some players from Liverpool, City and Arsenal who all have strong fixtures to completely maximise our points scoring potential, and then we can start again almost immediately building a season long team. The only other GW that would allow us that sort of all-in is GW 22 and GW23, but we have no clue what the fixtures will be AND we may be locked into certain players due to price changes.

The big risk is not knowing how the teams will go - Villa appear to be on the resurgence so it may not be as easy as expected. Further we're not sure if players will carry prior season form into the new season. Benteke is a big concern on this front.

That said I'm thinking of going for this line-up:
    Guzan
    Cole, Zabaleta, Collins
    Lampard, Coutinho, Walcott, Hazard(c)
    Benteke, Sturridge, Agbonlahor
(bench irrelevant, just pick stuff to fill the squad)

Then WC and aim for my longer term team.

PS I reserve all rights to change my mind on this as the new season approaches and I cower back into the prior 'wisdom' of saving my WC.

I haven't read your post, but I've looked at your team, and it's a bad idea. First of all you can get 4 DGW players and prepare for RVP without needing to WC. Early WCing is a good idea, but do it in the international break when prices go mental and everything is much clearer than after week one.

but some of those bandwagons will already have failed by week 4. Plus before week 4 you get a two week break to settle on things for the season and prepare for any injuries. For the sake of just a little bit of patience, and the sensible move of not overdoing it on Villa players, you can gain so much more.

Here's how I've judged the team:

        Guzan 4 points
        Zabaleta 6 Cole 12 Collins 2
        Lampard 8 Coutinho 6 Walcott 8 Hazard 30 (15*2)
        Benteke 8 Sturridge 6 Agbonlahor 4

so 94 points in total (yes completely made up). The average team is probably around 70 points

An early WC (GW3) allows you to analyse the squads the starters and get a feel for a teams back 4 it also gives you a great chance to jump on the risers.

Perhaps the more correct way to look at it:

            Guzan vs Mignolet
            Lampard vs Snodgrass/Mirallas
Benteke/Agbonlahor vs ?? (Anelka/JRod/Lambert are the current thoughts)

(since those would be the changes I'd make - settle on 2 Chelsea players and keep the others - perhaps Zabaleta would drop out for Koscielny)

Then would have to spend some budget on improving bench rubbish.

So points wise that would work out
Guzan vs. Mignolet - average about the same (one CS from Mignolet equals Guzans upside)
Lampard vs Snodgrass/Mirallas - probably a 4 point swing to Lampard
Benteke/Agbonlahor vs others - I'd go with the same number of goals total. So another 4 points to the all-in strategy.

This gives my analysis only an 8 point advantage to the all-in but with much larger upside.

This is why we discuss things - so I can change my mind. Again.

It worked well last season because the players who did well in GW1 performed well up until the January wildcard. Michu, Fellaini, Lambert and Tevez for example.
The opposite might be the case this year.

Fair point, by delaying your WC your able to adjust for bandwagons with more certainty. And definitely a consideration.

        Counter example - Petric.

If you look how spiderm4tt approached it - he went for players he trusted then moved in on the bandwagons later. I think that would be the correct play here.

You're too wrapped up in the details.
Don't forget, the people who WC'd early were the ones who had started with the wrong players.
If you had Michu, Ivan, RVP and whoever else started well last year then you didn't WC'D. You just used your regular transfers to bring in who you wanted.
So, people weren't successful 'because' they WC'D in a particular GW or not, they did well cos they had the right players and did whatever was necessary to get them.

      .

But it only matters if you have started with loads of the wrong players.
Imagine GW 5 is the 'optimum' as you say. Then you already have 4 free transfers and lets say one more for a -4 to save the WC. That's 5 players you can change without WC.

Unless you are really unhappy with 2/3s of your team - no WC.
But if you've started well and have who you want by GW5 then no WC.

So it's not anything to do with when you WC but whether or not you need to WC.

I mean you could start brilliantly and then find a whole host of form players you want in GW 11 and WC then, it's purely circumstantial.....

Intriguing post, but fwiw, hits are not the end of your season. I blew my WC early to get Michu and RVP in, as you said; was very hit averse and stagnant in the 10-20k range for much of last year; and then as all the dgws popped up, I met a shaman in the Deadzone who explained his rationale of going big to load up for them. I took about tons of points hits to spread the risk because the more hits you take at once the less big payoff each newboy has to get you, including a 16 pter in one week, and went from 20k to inside the top 5k.

Personally, I'm not so sure about Navas and I really think Anelka will flop. I have Anelka but as a sub (playing 3-5-2) in case he does get some top scores then I can easily utilize him.

That was mine for a long time until I switched to 3-5-2.

The thing is, I can't think of a forward who isn't very risky besides Suarez (who, of course, is out). RVP is safe for a lot of reasons, but he is also a ridiculous price.

But yeah, to me, while that is a risky frontline, it has the potential to be a great one.

It's not just a question of how many goals Michu will score. He will probably have a couple or more in the first 6 games. The thing is I expect Walcott, hazard, bale if he stays, Rvp, silva and coutinho to score more than him in that same period. I also think Nolan mirallas and snodgrass will be higher in terms of points than him. So still not sold.

        Fair enough.

Though in my opinion, Silva, Mirallas, Snodgrass are not 15 goals / season men. Silva has *never* hit double figure goals in 10 league seasons. Ok, he will create more chances, but he's also a rotation risk with so many options at City.

Michu scored 16 goals from midfield for Rayo, and then 18 goals for Swansea.

He'll be returning to his preferred position - in the hole - with the signing of Bony, and he's been pretty good in pre-season.
