Sky Sports – Formation Analysis

In our next article on the Sky Sports Fantasy game we unveil a new contributor to the Fantasy Football Scout team. Luke Williams, or “d1sable” as he is known to the community, joins the ranks to add his expertise to our coverage of this game, having established himself as “Hot Topic” specialist in recent weeks.

In Luke’s first article, he analyses the available options in formation for our Sky Sports starting XI. Ultimately our intention is to ascertain which tactical set-up is optimal for giving our teams the greatest chance of success, whilst also assessing the potential need for flexibility in our approach.

Firstly, let’s look at the five highest scoring outfield players per position last season. Our objective here is to gain an idea of the spread of points available from defence, midfield and attack – a vital aspect to consider when selecting formation.

Sky Sports Top Five Forwards 2012-13

NameTotal PointsPricePoints per £
Luis Suarez2559.626.56
Robin Van Persie2501025
Wayne Rooney1839.818.67
Christian Benteke1837.524.4
Dimitar Berbatov1827.524.26

As the tables highlight, the highest scoring defender (Leighton Baines, 154) scored just over 100 points less than the top midfielder (Santi Cazorla, 262) and attacker (Luis Suarez, 255). This won’t come as a shock to the experienced Fantasy manager: this tends to mirror most Fantasy games; it only serves to remind us where we should be spending the majority of our budget.

Another important point to note is that midfielders offered very similar returns to attackers but, for the majority of the time, at a reduced cost, as highlighted by their points per million. Obviously, costs have been adjusted for this season but with midfielders having a maximum value of 9.0 and attackers 10.0, your budget will be stretched that little bit further to acquire the services of the top attackers rather than the premium midfielders.

In terms of formations, Sky Sports offers you five different options: 4-4-2, 4-3-3, 5-3-2, 3-5-2 & 4-5-1. We have chosen to dismiss 5-3-2 and 4-5-1 on the basis that they seem slightly counter-productive, five defenders will surely limit our Fantasy returns and a formation with a single forward seems far too negative in our quest for goals. With that in mind, let’s cast an eye over the pros and cons of the three more offensive tactical set-ups and assess the optimum time to put them to use.

4-4-2

Pros

  • Flexible: if this season’s Michu or Christian Benteke crop up you can adjust accordingly to 3-5-2 or 4-3-3 with a single transfer.
  • You should be clear to acquire an expensive front two due to the cheaper prices offered in defence and midfield.

Cons

  • Having four at the back could hinder your overall points potential due to the relatively low scores achieved by defenders in comparison to midfielders and attackers.

Best time to use
Due to its flexibility, the 4-4-2 is certainly useful as an initial formation for the more cautious Fantasy manager.

4-3-3

Pros

  • Having three strikers clearly offers the potential for more goals.
  • Arguably, this formation also provides more captain options as you are more likely to hand the armband to an attacker.

Cons

  • If you wish to move to 3-5-2 it will take you two transfers.
  • Again, having four defenders is a slight risk due to the rarity of clean sheets.
  • Attackers come with a higher price tag and it can take a large chunk of your budget, potentially having a big impact on your midfield and defence.

Best time to use
This formation is most useful for the run-in. Perhaps the most efficient tactic is acquiring a big hitter in defence to cover the business-like performances from the top teams and a value attacker that has come to light from one of the lesser sides fighting for survival: they should be highly motivated whilst offering guaranteed starts.

3-5-2

Pros

  • Five midfielders gives you a higher chance to receive the bonus points on offer for completed passes and tackles.
  • You can field seven attacking players, more than any other system in the Sky Sports game as 3-4-3 is unavailable.
  • A three man backline means fewer players can lose points for goals conceded.
  • Midfielders offer the best points per price value.

Cons

  • If you wish to keep your current attackers but want to add a third in-form frontman and shift to 4-3-3, you need to make two transfers, replacing a pair of midfielders with a defender and attacker.

Best time to use
Most of the season, if not all of it, It’s pretty hard to make a case for any formation over the formidable 3-5-2, which could well be the default set-up for many of our teams.

Data suggest that this set-up should carry the most potential to gain Fantasy points, although as mentioned above, there is a small case for a shift in formation towards the season run-in to a 4-3-3. Of course, each season is different from the last and it’s important to back the in-form players regardless of their position. With an added 10 transfers this season giving us 40 in total and with no monthly cap, we should perhaps find it easier to be flexible and adjust our formation accordingly.

Fantasy Football Scout League

Once again, we’ve set up an official Fantasy Football Scout league for those playing the Sky game – we’re looking to defend our crown, having finished as top-rated league in 2012/13. If you fancy the challenge, you can enter with the pin 8000112 and with Sky offering a cool £1,000 for the winner of our official “FFScout” league, there’s every incentive to get on board.

Allright lads, not a RMT but a strategic question 🙂

    Migs (Lewis)
Koscielny - Ivanovic - Collins (Chester, Brayford)
Bale - Walcott - Hazard - Silva (Kim)
    Lukaku - Aspas - Rodriguez

I'm so set on this midfield that i don't want to break it up (Silva for City security) but beeing so light upfront is really annoying (and scary 🙂 ). It would make sense to have at least 1 bighitter upfront but who to get? Apart from RVP, which is clearly out of my concept, everybody else has problems (not playing, injured,...).

GW 2 Ivanovic -> Coleman, so Lukaku -> (Negredo, Soldado etc...)

Anybody else feel weird because of light attack?

I don't think bale will be there so
      Bale -> Couthinho
      Aspas -> Soldado
      Chester -> Shaw

Then you have a great team IMO

Even if he does stay his head won't be fully set on Tottenham. And with Soldado up front he will take some of bales points. Spending 12 million on a player like tis is mad I Gink when there's so many other options. Keep an eye on Miralles too.

Makes sense. Like i said, before i had this:

Mirallas - Walcott - Hazard - Silva (Kim)
            Soldado - Aspas - Lukaku

            ...and some spare $$ left.

It looks much better to me.

What do people think of Brunt? 5.5m, had an injury plagued season and played poorly but ended up with 92 points.

But he is captain and nailed on, and he's had good seasons before. I think he is a bargain, but he can't tackle for toffee apparently

If WBA do okay then he will do well.........here in however lies the issue for me as I really think that they are going to struggle badly this season. Morrison at 6.0 also seems like a bargain on face value but both are staying off my radar.

Right now if I could have 6 spaces in my midfield then they could all be full of prime spots but if I am taking a punt then I am going to go with Kim as he is nailed on and playing furthest forward of all the options and I genuinely see Cardiff finishing up WBA this season.

Brunt may well have a decent season and prove to be worth his value but the likes of Kim could explode and gain your team a million plus in value. I think as with all marginal decisions it comes down to what your priorities are.

Ok I need someone to talk me out of starting Cech for the DGW! I won't be WC'ing early (barring any total disasters) and every season I employ a cheap rotation policy and so I was looking at Boruc/Mannone but I can't see any reason to start with a risk of rotation defender who you are going to transfer out any way instead of just a nailed on keeper! Even if injuries occur I still wouldn't have to go beyond a free transfer as Boruc can sub well in until GW4 then Cech for GW5 and by then I will definitely have the opportunity to get him out for nothing.

I'm with you on Cech. Last 3 years I've been cheapo + cheapo, and it's worked well. This year though the thought of getting 8-12 points in GW1 from a keeper is too tempting.

Plus having Cech makes it easier to field a proper team in GW3 with no hits.

Imo I think should keep away from setting a team up with transfers, you never know what might happen. Who will be Man united's midfield for example. If zaha starts he could be a massive bandwagon and you'll have to get him. Anything can happen after the first gw

    Capoue report:

He's tall and strong and tackles well. He's a lot like steven gerrard because he can play in a lot of different positions. He has been compared to moussa sissoko so he might even play off the striker.

He turned it up last season scoring loads of goals. In the premier league he will score less but if he plays off the striker he could get a few screamers from the edge of the box.

Hell do ok because hell be used to tough tackling and hell need it because that's what were about. He doesn't mess around doing fancy stuff which will probably help him too.

Spurs might try and convert him into a striker because he can be a target man or a winger because he is quick or even a playmaker because he can pass. A lot of players from abroad are supposed to have extra skills that we don't have even though we do. so everyone will expect him to be zidane.

Like moussa sissoko who is meant to be mates with I think he will have a good start and then just do ok and not score many goals.

Not touching the Spurs midfield with a barge pole at the moment. Dawson and Soldado seem the only realistic picks and they've got their caveats - a lack of clean sheets for the former and possible Spain-friendly-exhaustion for the latter.

Ever have a draft, that you really fancy, but know that it flies against conventional wisdom and would be slated by any Fantasy footy manager worth their salt?

Dam Double gameweek, putting a real cog into any team selections as going without 3 Chelsea and Benteke looks a gamble too far. Narrows down the options and makes things a bit duller.

Doos, I know you've probably been asked this a few times, but what's your view on R. Morrison's chances of getting a run-in in the team? According to your pre-season sheet, he's been in fine form.

I would search for it but we can no longer do that, so apologies for the duplicate question.

If you are benching Mirallas away to Norwich then I assume you would make the same choice in GW5 too, away West Ham who are even stronger at home than Norwich and WBA are home to Sunderland.

This combined with games home to Chelsea and away to Citeh means that you could have a 7.5m player on your hands that you are only playing 3 out of 7 times to start the season!

I guess I am saying that if you don't fancy Mirallas enough in GW1 then you might as well pick Nolan with much better fixtures and look at Mirallas again from GW8 onwards.........just food for thought 🙂

QUINN is the most nailed on to get guaranteed game time once he is fit again but that is not "making the difference" to me, that is being happy with 2 points.
