The Burning Question – Would Bale’s Departure Make Van Persie Essential?

Over the last few months of 2012/13, Gareth Bale’s series of explosive displays had finally afforded Fantasy managers a reliable captaincy alternative to the relentless Robin Van Persie. With a goal or assist in 11 of his final 14 league appearances, the Welshman thrived in a central role behind the lone forward in Andre Villas-Boas’ 4-2-3-1 formation and ended the campaign with 14 sets of double figure hauls, averaging 7.2 points per game in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Despite a hefty hike in price across the Fantasy games, Bale was a hugely popular pick when the Player Price Lists were released earlier this summer but with Real Madrid determined to prise him away from the Lane, his ownership has dropped dramatically with only a few days left until the season kicks off. Not only would his departure be a bitter blow to Villas-Boas’ plans for the season ahead, it would also hit Fantasy managers equally hard and leave Van Persie as the standout option in terms of reliability once more.

In our next Burning Question article, we ask a handful of contributors if the Dutchman will be impossible to ignore if Bale legs it to La Liga.

Applebonkers says….
I’m personally without Van Persie as it stands, due to fixture and form concerns more than an issue of price. So on that basis, no. Of course, the great appeal of Van Persie is his ability to score against anyone, but my argument is that a goal in each of the first three matches wouldn’t really hurt a non-owner as it costs 14.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) to acquire the United man.

Braces and hat-tricks are the ones which really punish non-owners, though I’m not sure he has the post-Real Madrid form to trump the opening schedule, with trips to Swansea and Liverpool and a home game versus Chelsea in the first three Gameweeks.

Here’s a stat: since RVP notched three times against Chelsea in 2011, 24 hat-tricks have been scored in the Premier League and only two have come against top half sides (Steven Gerrard v Everton and Romelu Lukaku v United). It’s playing the odds in my opinion, no one is fixture proof, simply various levels of fixture resilience. I have to admit, by Gameweek 4 I’d like him, though.

Andy says….
Coming from the Fantasy manager who went 31 of 38 gameweeks last season without Manchester United and Fantasy Football’s top scorer, and won the Scout Contributor’s league (I will brag while I still can!) in doing so, my answer to this question is probably pretty obvious. To me, the notion of the essential and must-have player is nothing but a fallacy. And that even includes Robin Van Persie.

The Dutch forward is arguably the best player currently plying his trade in the Premier League and will surely earn his crust for whichever Fantasy managers decide to hand over the mammoth price tag he has been handed across the Fantasy games. He’s safe, he’s secure, he’s prolific. He’s not essential though.

I’ve written many words in the past to support this claim but it boils down to the fact that I believe you can find alternative ways to spend your Fantasy budget to equal or greater effect. There’s more inherent “danger” involved in veering away from such Fantasy staples but it doesn’t mean you can’t succeed – a theory my 2012/13 season somehow managed to support.

Essentially, he’s not essential. But if there’s ever a good run of games where I think he’ll be the ideal captain choice, I’ll be the first to invest. Getting that armband choice right – or, more importantly, not getting it wrong when those around you get it right – is one aspect I do place a high priority on.

Tinkerman says…
Bale’s departure would certainly deprive us of an immense Fantasy talent and cause a huge rethink of strategy – especially for those whose draft squads currently rely on the Welshman’s explosive yet consistent returns for their weekly captaincy choice.

That said, I still don’t think Bale leaving necessarily makes Van Persie the only safe captaincy option from the start. Granted, we all know his capabilities but, with a wealth of premium midfielders offering high potential, there are plenty of ways to spend the extra budget you’d save by choosing to overlook the most expensive player in the game.

Managers avoiding Van Persie from the start would, however, leave themselves with a quandary should he prove to be the only reliable and consistent captaincy option after a few weeks. It would mean being forced into either spending points on transfer hits or activating the transfer wildcard early on. The option of initially avoiding Van Persie and bringing him in on a Gameweek 4 wildcard is one that has been discussed much on the boards – at this point, cheaper players who offer strong points potential will no doubt have emerged and will allow us to save money elsewhere in order to free up funds for the Dutchman. Since an early wildcard has proven to be a successful strategy for many managers in recent seasons, I think Bale leaving these shores wouldn’t make owning Van Persie from the start a must.

Ryan says….
The main argument for Van Persie’s essential status is that he would be a nailed-on captaincy option. As this is a new season, however, I am of the opinion that other strong armband candidates will appear as the campaign unfolds. The fact that RVP is so expensive almost compels you to captain him most weeks in order to justify his place in your side. This can act as a mental bias in one’s thought process and brings about a barrier which stops you captaining other potentially stronger options. I think it is best not to be shackled to the Dutchman and be more flexible in your armband picks.

Van Persie may not be ‘essential’ but for the conservative manager, his incredible consistency makes him a reliable captain that will still bring home regular points. It might take some time to identify exactly who the best alternative captains are – until that time, Van Persie is a safe option to get you started.

Mark says…
Essential is a big word. I wouldn’t quite go that far but, for my money, Bale’s seemingly imminent departure has undoubtedly raised Van Persie’s stock.

I was all set to overlook him and opt for the Spurs man but now the landscape has changed and suddenly I’m setting up with the Dutchman as the foundation for my team, with the rest of my selections dropping in around him.

The armband is a major concern. Yes, there will be weekly candidates who emerge but few, if any, can get close to the consistency we saw from Van Persie for long spells last season.

I’m well aware that I’ve clung to him like a security blanket and that my faith in Van Persie has cost me dear in the past but I much prefer the idea of starting the season with him and assessing what value is available elsewhere, rather than be forced to carry out major surgery ahead of Gameweek 4.

Of course the early wildcard is the solution but I want to have the choice, not be forced to play it because Van Persie has delivered a goal a game and is about to embark on a run of favourable fixtures.

The fact is, without Van Persie, I’m going into the season without any cover of the Champions’ attack. While Wayne Rooney flirted with the concept of offering an alternative last season, this time around that option looks unlikely. Unless Wilfred Zaha takes his opportunity or Shinji Kagawa cements the support role over Danny Welback, then it really is Van Persie or nothing.

While there are real concerns that David Moyes will struggle to inspire his team to the heights of previous campaigns, I see too much quality in the United lineup to risk overlooking them as an attacking force.

Essential? Not quite. Highly desirable and worth building your squad around? Right now, I really think so.

He is not going to start.

When casuals make there teams and need a 4.0 defender (probably because they have RVP), they set the search to 4.0 defenders.

Baker pops up as the highest scoring 4.0 defender from last year.

      Casuals pick Baker.

His price will be 3.8 soon.

I'm weighing the same and at the moment it's looking like Giroud/Lukaku/Benteke. Giroud's the one I'm most confident in, Soldado for one of the Belgians is a distinct possibility, Dzeko is out for me, too much risk, especially if I decide to go with Lukaku.

I'm currently on Benteke-Lukaku-Giroud because Dzeko is a short term option at best and at some point he's going to be rotated out a lot. With the same problem looming over Lukaku I can not afford to have 2 striker spots that may need transfer spent on them right away and Lukaku has a DGW so he's ahead of Dzeko. Soldado hasnt done anything in the UK yet - no pre season and starts away from home whereas Giroud has scored many goals and looked good and more established now in Arsenals team and is home to Villa - if giroud fails against Villa at home then i have the option of swapping to Soldado or someone else that comes to the fore.

Though we have the same proposed front line, I disagree a little. You can't sell Giroud if your other two strikers are Benteke/Lukaku, even if he flops, not with the gameweek 3 blanks.

I'm not scared of taking a hit for a striker - when giroud is good he can score a brace but if he's bad he is gonna be 2pts and too unpredictable. If he does the business against Villa he's worth the risk - but with all teams without RVP in them its going to be an early wildcard to fix it - can make say 3 transfers in GW3 for -4pts but if RVP + Bale + Baines ect all start strongly its a WC.

Fair enough, but Giroud is in for at least 3 weeks for me. I don't want to wildcard until the international break. And taking a hit to dump Giroud when I'm already likely to be taking a hit for Benteke/Lukaku/maybe a defender seems wasteful.

Ok I will try to prioritise as best i can -

      1. Benteke for the dgw
      2. Soldado cause of set pieces and nice fixtures. Plus he is class. I am worried Bout what kind of service he will get though with ale gone
      3. Dzeko - form is red hot. Scored in the friendly too yesterday and so did negredo. I am pretty sure he will start gw1 but he is constantly going to be a liability in your team because he is just not a guaranteed selection
      4. Giroud - good pick if ur to getting Walcott IMO, but Wally is a better optin
      5. Lukaku - massive punt with high risk of failure. Limited minutes and possibility on bench at old Trafford means he becomes a liability quick

But seriously Stoke haven't scored in like their last 3 friendlies, right? I just don't see the case for Crouch. He could end up with about 10 goals/5 assists for the season which is solid for his price, but it's just not very exciting.

True, but for me, it makes the game less fun. You're rarely going to get a big haul from Stoke/Crouch. I'd rather gamble on a JRod, Anelka or that Czech dude WBA just signed if I wanted a striker in that price range.

He's cheap and I may fancy him over Anelka or others people have picked. BUt the main strikers for the promoted sides will arguably do just as well and probably cost less.

The main issue is that you want heavy hitters up front. Have a cheap defence and for only a million or two more you can get a more prolific striker like Lambert or Berbatov.

Anyone actually think Liverpool would fork out 35-40+ million for Willian? It seems we're interested in a quick left sided player which Willian is but Anzhi have already turned down a bid just shy of 40m for him.

The only explanation that makes any sense to me is that the whole situation is so volatile that Ayre hopes to get a deal. Half the stories I read say Anzhi's owner is having financial trouble, and the other half say he's just frustrated at having spent a huge wad of rubles and has nothing to show for it, so he's cleaning house and starting over.

I absolutely do not understand the logic of £75+ million in wingers with Daniel Sturridge as your #9, nor did I understand the pursuit of Mkhtarian when Coutinho is clearly the #10 of the future and there's still a man named Gerrard in the team.

We need to sort out the situations with Suarez and Skrtel, we need to replace Jose Enrique and probably sign a younger CB to pair with Agger, and Ayre needs to do everything in his power to ensure Agger doesn't make a move to greener pastures, and eventually we need to upgrade Sturridge as well. And that's a lot to do, which is why I'm a bit confounded by reports like this, which just reek of that "we've had a bad spell, we've got to *do something*" desperation that never ends well.

This has been mentioned before - its yanga atm, and in the future it is more likely to still be yanga because of taylors likelyhood to pick up an injury. But i feel only nailed on New defender atm is Coloccini and then Debuchy. Debuchy is playing like a right winger or wingback so has good potential attacking returns but didnt settle at all last season so if New do come good again then Debuchy will be involved.

Players coming from La liga always tend to have a good first season in the BPL (ex: mata, silva, cazorla, michu, aguero and to an extent chico and de guzman)
so soldado and negredo(if he plays enough) should have a pretty good season going with that concept 😀

Lukaku could easily run rampant, and that could hurt you, even if he gets only 100 minutes.

Do you want a pretty safe 8-12 points or a mercurial 2-20 points? Also, how much do you like the other striking options? Do you think Soldado/Sturridge/Benteke/Giroud are going to hit the ground running? Are you okay with spending 6.5 on a keeper when Mignolet plays an impotent Stoke at home?

I'm going Lukaku. Higher points ceiling. *Cue Cech triple penalty save.

Decided to go with Silva over Coutinho. Now the question is

    A) Start with Benteke (and ship GW 2 to Sturridge for a hit)

    B) Start with Sturridge

I have Coutinho but was considering Silva. In my opinion Liverpool carry a lot of flair and with the news that Coutinho will ideally be moved to the centre, and is pretty much nailed on, means he should be good value.

Liverpool do carry flair in Coutinho, I agree 100%, but City's first 3 fixtures are absolute gold, and I want Silva for those. Playing 2 promoted sides in the first 3; as good as it gets.

Sturridge in a season keeper in my team; just gotta pick whether I want him from the off, or get him in GW 2 with a -4

If you start with Benteke then you must be banking on him to do well in DGW1. Then if he does greatly, would it be wrong to ditch him in the next game, at home against Liverpool? I just think that people who start the game with Benteke should keep him (and ditch Lukaku first, if you have both) as he can definitely score against Liverpool, and that he'll probably outscore Studge in 2 GWs. But that's just my opinion.

It's Benteke home to Liverpool vs Sturridge away to Villa then; I fancy Sturridge in that case. But I understand your point.

I have full faith in Benteke's ability without a doubt; just that the fixtures and the extra hit I might have to take to get him out is restraining me.

While I predict that Silva will rarely get rotated in the Man City midfield, I feel with all the firepower added to the frontline he'll be providing the assist to the assist.

With or without Bale though, I predict(hope) Soldado will be knocking in the majority of goals for Tott'num.

Interesting on who will be the captain to choose from that lot from week to week - most people without RVP and Bale have similar situation. Collins is injured atm not sure if he will make GW1 and i feel a good idea to rotate 2 4.5 defenders for home games because i cant see any early season reliability in the promoted teams. Nor, Sun, Wham and Sou have a few 4.5's to choose from.

haha I'm glad Dempsey left, he wasn't going to get any playing time. If you want a small comparison for Altidore, He scored more goals in his last 2 years in the dutch league than suarez did, and with less talent around him. I'm hoping he can have even a quarter of the impact suarez has had. Different Class of player I know but I still think the goals are going to come

What about lampard for Mirallas - could be a big score for lamps against 2 lower teams then you can have mirallas back for their home game.

Collins likely out GW1 in your 4.5 defender slot

worth picking and keeping Collins on the bench in GW1? Still have good fixtures in GW3-5 (+goal threat) and i don't want to waste transfer on my 4th def.

I'm praying desperately that he's fit. Those fixtures look great for cleanies and i cant afford the 0.5 to upgrade to Reid. 🙁

75% chance of playing according to FPL - think he's worth keeping. Only problem is i can afford 1.0 to upgrade to Reid/Rat/Lescott/Kos.

what do you think doc, keep or upgrade?

I'm waiting for the press conferences on Friday.
Shame if he's out since him and a 4.5 Saints defender rotate nicely, but Clyne and Shaw are doubts too.

I think this team is really well balanced unlike rvp teams so the points I might lose by not having him will hopefully be made up in the areas rvp teams are lacking .. If he gets on a hot streak I may have to plan my wildcard around him and a few others but I'm looking first 3weeks here.

If Marshall is your backup GK, that's pretty snazzy aside from missing Walcott.

Might want a different 4.5 than Thomas who may be hurt in midfield.

      Change
      Baines to Coleman
      Mirallas to Walcott
      Snodgrass to HBA

then I like it better than my team
