The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Sunday

Cardiff upset the odds and battle back to grab the points at City’s expense in their first home match in the Premier League. Andre Villas-Boas shifts to 4-3-3 for the visit of Swansea, while Michael Laudrup tinkers with his forward options once again:

The Game Changer

An emphatic 4-0 win at home to Newcastle on Monday evening saw Fantasy managers loading up on City’s attacking assets ahead of a trip to Cardiff. Plenty anticipated a walkover in light of the Magpies mauling – almost 65,000 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) snapped up Sergio Aguero while over 76,000 opted for Edin Dzeko ahead of this afternoon’s showdown in Wales.

Compared to the visitors’ front two, Fraizer Campbell was no more than an afterthought but the former United frontman showed his top-flight credentials by bagging a brace and assist to send Pellegrini’s side back to Manchester with their tails between their legs. Andreas’ Cornelius’ return to fitness saw the big Dane warm the bench and although he’ll be pushing for a start, it’s Campbell who remains in the driving seat for the lone striker role, with his cut-price appeal (5.5 in FPL) bound to get the bandwagon rolling over the next few days.

The Underused

A shoulder injury whilst on international duty over the summer kept Aron Gunnarsson far from Fantasy radars as the season approached.

Those looking for a route into Malky Mackay’s midfield had mainly focussed on Kim Bo-Kyung, after the Korean notched three times over the summer but, having recovered in time for the Bluebirds’ final pre-season friendly, Gunnarsson looks a vital component of the Cardiff central midfield three.

Sitting alongside Kim and new boy Gary Medel, the Icelandic international opened his account for the season to serve Fantasy managers a reminder of the attacking threat which produced eight goals and six assists in the Championship last time out. Craig Bellamy, Kim and set-piece taker Peter Whittingham have proven far more popular picks but with a mere 0.3% ownership in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the 5.0 priced Gunnarsson could be another differential contender worthy of our consideration.

The Selection Poser

While the starting XIs at the Cardiff City Stadium were pretty much as anticipated, Manuel Pellegrini’s decision to replace Edin Dzeko with Alvaro Negredo midway through the second-half will have the Bosnian’s owners on edge ahead of the weekend home clash against Hull. Dzeko’s superb opener maintained his recent form but it was perhaps telling that Sergio Aguero was retained for the full 90 minutes against the Bluebirds; Negredo’s late goal will also give his manager food for thought as City look to recover from today’s unexpected stumble.

Andre Villas-Boas and Michael Laudrup gave Fantasy managers plenty to mull over at the Lane. The Spurs boss shifted to a 4-3-3 formation and demoted Gylfi Sigurdsson to the subs bench after just one game, with Etienne Capoue joining Mousa Dembele and Paulinho in the centre of the park. Villas-Boas’ spending over the next few days will likely hint at his preferred formation over the season ahead but for Sigurdsson, the signs are already looking ominous. While Andros Townsend staked a claim for inclusion with another strong display on the right, he, too, will be bracing himself for increased competition over the next few days, with two or three new faces anticipated.

Swansea’s Europa League duties continue to affect Laudrup’s selection policy up top. Wilfried Bony was once again named on the bench, with Michu preferred as the lone striker and Jonjo Shelvey tucking in behind – the Ivorian could be set for a Fantasy exodus if this continues for much longer.

I kinda want him also. But it will be hard for me to stomach giving out that much cash with Dawson sitting there at 5.0. I guess he's got some playing time issues though, depending on Kaboul/future signings.

He really is a monster. He WILL BE the top scoring defender when this season is over, if he stays injury free.

Up to 2k placing, what a start.

    Mig / (4.0)

    Coleman / Collin / B.Turner (Ivan, Chester)

    Silva (C) / Mirralas / Nolan / Wally / Kim

    Soldado / Sturridge (Tekkers)

    All set to go?

Wonderful start mate. Well done. What is your reasoning behind starting the two Everton and Kim? Fancy a high scoring game? Kim hasn't done anything for me yet and I am thinking of booting.

What's people's takes on this for a long term team?

    Boruc - Vorm (Rotating)
    Toure - Vertonghen - £5M - £5M (Ward)
    Walcott - Mirallas - Hernandez (£4.5 - £4.5)
£18.5M on two strikers - RVP

Captain RVP every week and bench any one of the back four who is facing Man United that game week and play Ward.

    It's basically:

    GK - £9.5M
    DEF - Toure - Vertonghen/Walker - £5M - £5M - £4M (£26M max)
    MID - £9.5M - £7.5/7M - £6/6.5M - £4.5M x2 (£32M)
STR - RVP + 2 of Soldado, Giroud, Bony, Sturridge, Benteke etc. (£32.5M)

          - captaining RVP every week

          - benching one of your back 4 only when they play United, and assuming Ward has a good fixture that week

I dislike Liverpool, no offence to those supporters on here.

However, I'd love to see them carve it up and for Sturridge to have a great opening spell and score prolifically.

When Suarez is ready to return Rogers can tell him to go warm his ratty @rse on the bench every game.

Sturridge continues to do well ... Suarez develops blisters on his ratty @rse from so much benchtime.

Leaves club to join Romanian Division 3 team coz no-one wants him anymore.

Before I answer - who would you chose and why?

For me - Silva, his form is obvious, he's getting plenty of opportunities and looks as nailed on as any City attacker (knowing he will get the occasional rest).

Walcott ain't bad by Arsenal havent quite hit their straps yet and there is likely some more transfer activity to be had which may unsettle the applecart for a few more weeks. He certinaly won't be getting a chance up front with Giroud in the form he's in.

No need to hide. It seems Bony is still getting himself match fit. He will start next week after Shelvey's awful performance.

Anyone see the Tottenham game last night? Interested to know how Michu did in particular. And Paulinho.

Michu was nowhere to be seen. He totally missed a sitter though (but it was offside).

Paulinho was Spurs most attacking player (further forward than Soldado). Lots of shots, but lacks ability to finish. It is questionable if he will be fielded in the hole vs Gunners though.

Michu was pretty poor.. dint notice him at all(watched the entire game replay). However, with the run he has i expect him to do gr8. Bony will start soon enough and will add to michu's goal scoring. From what i've seen of bony in preseason he plays with his back towards goal laying the ball off for others(michu) to score.

Michu looked more likely to get a second yellow than a goal.

Which one is the best option?

    A) Ivan > Collins and Lukaku > Aguero for a 4pt hit
    B) Lukaku > Dzeko
    C) Lukaku > Sturridge (already have cout)
    D) Burner > Lescott and Lukaku > Dzeko for a 4pt hit
    E) Other suggestions?

To Test Eagle and all you fantasy managers. What is your take on Silva vs. Wally for captain?

I have not made my decision yet.
All I am doing now is weighing the options.

    Silva
Playing at home versus a promoted side (Pro)
Man City lost the previous game to a promoted side. May want to recover. Pro
Man city Score a lot at home, (Proved that with NEW). Pro
Silva Can easily get a clean sheet point. Pro.
Silva whips in a majority of corners. (Pro)
That will be an early kick off. Long weekend if Silva does nothing. (Con)
    Not explosive (Con)

    Wally
Has a direct approach in attacking (Extremely advanced). Pro
Could be a high scoring game (Pro)
Playing on mind. Peace of mind if Silva does not perform (Pro)
Could easily score a two pointer (Spurs have a resolute defense)
    Not on set pieces (Con)

Do I get a "knee jerk award" for Campbell (c)? 😀

While we're on the subject of knee jerks, will Lukaku get another hat trick tonight against ManU?

9k after two weeks ain't too shabby! Good week of 55 so car with 2 left... I'll take that after a WC and 17 odd points on the bench

    Brady in for Mirallas
    Collins in for B.Turner
    RvP in for Bentekke
    Dzeko in for Lukaku
    Lamps in for Hazzy
    Lewis in for Mannone
    Barkley in for Morrison
    Zaba in for Ivan

Benched Chester and Brady unfortunately but all good 8)

Didn't see any football this weekend though. Hopefully catch up on MNF tomorrow

Morning, anyone else struggling to change captain in the Sky game? It worked last week but this week I had Walcott and wanted to change to Soldado but it was blocked. Still the same today if I try RvP. Is the 2 captain change a weekly bonus or was it a one-off?

Bizarre how Spurs didn't win a penalty all season last year without an established taker and now they have one, it is 2 in 2.

Spurs just aren't creating the chances for him, I'm a little worried as an owner. Can't count on penalties forever.
