Moving Target

Moving Target – Stephen Ireland

In a somewhat surprising transfer deadline-day deal, Stoke boss Mark Hughes snapped up midfielder Stephen Ireland on a season-long loan from Aston Villa. The 27-year-old is the fifth new arrival at the Britannia this term and follows Erik Pieters, Marc Muniesa, Marko Arnautovic and Oussama Assaidi to the club as Hughes looks to restructure the Potters’ playing approach after succeeding Tony Pulis over the summer:

Speaking to the club’s official website, the Stoke Chief Executive Tony Scholes revealed the player’s previous performances under Hughes at the Etihad persuaded the Potters boss to acquire his services:

“Stephen is a player that Mark knows really well and when the opportunity arose he was keen to add him to his midfield and attacking options. Arguably the most successful period of Stephen’s career to date was when he played for Mark at Manchester City and we hope that he can rediscover that form.”

The History

A product of the Man City youth academy, Ireland joined the club at the age of 15 back in August 2001. The midfielder made his debut during the 2004/05 season but took his time to make an impact, producing a single goal and pair of assists across 47 appearances in his first couple of campaigns at the club.

After notching four goals and three assists in 33 appearances the following year, Ireland’s nine goals and nine assists in 35 league games across 2008/09 earned him City’s Player of the Year award under the guidance of Hughes but he failed to maintain his consistency. The Welshman’s dismissal in the early stages of the following season saw Ireland become a peripheral figure under Roberto Mancini and, after producing just two goals and a pair of assists, he was transferred to Aston Villa as part of the deal that took James Milner to the Etihad.

Ireland’s time in the midlands proved bitterly disappointing as his once-promising career began to fall apart. Over the next three years, he failed to convince a trio of managers and was handed a combined tally of 47 games by Gerard Houllier, Alex McLeish and Paul Lambert, producing just a single goal and four assists.

The Prospects

With just a year left of his contract at Villa, Ireland’s switch to Stoke means he is now effectively playing for his future. Despite failing to feature this term so far, the midfielder insists he is fully match sharp and is desperate to make an impact at the Britannia:

“I’m fit and raring to go. I don’t want to be eased in and I don’t want to have to take my time; I just want to get straight in there as fast as I can. I want to participate in whatever way I can, whether that be for the full 90 minutes or whether it be coming off the bench for the final five minutes. Whatever time I get I will give it everything I have. It’s been a long time in the waiting for me so I want to get going and show everyone what I am capable of.”

To an extent, Ireland’s situation mirrors that of his manager. Hughes was also written off by many after a hugely unsuccessful stint at QPR led to his dismissal last term and the pair have plenty to prove this time out – the new Stoke manager’s tactics are steadily making an impact, however, and have now harvested three straight wins in all competitions after a narrow Gameweek 1 defeat at Liverpool.

As the Staffordshire outfit become more accustomed to their new manager’s possession-based approach, it’s clear we can no longer view them in the same way as we once did under Pulis. Hughes’ 4-4-1-1 formation could certainly favour Ireland and hand Fantasy managers an intriguing cut-price prospect if he can nail down his preferred role in “the hole” behind a lone forward, though it’s uncertain whether he’ll be immediately handed a starting berth.

Indeed, much depends on where fellow new boy Marko Arnautovic ends up. If the six foot three Austrian – classified as a midfielder across the Fantasy games – is utilised as a lone forward, then he looks the one to consider, though a shift to the right flank would likely see Jon Walters moved into the middle, thus denting Ireland’s prospects.

Coming in at a mere 4.8 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 4.4 in the Sky Sports game, his lack of impact over the past few seasons means Ireland is particularly budget friendly. Fantasy managers will be understandably sceptical but if Hughes can help reignite the potential that saw him shine at the Etihad, we may have an unlikely cut-price contender on our hands.

Any thoughts on what changes I should make? Got 2 FT's, and 1.5 in the bank.

    GK: Mignolet
DF: Ivanovic -- Zabaleta -- Coleman
MF: Lampard -- Mirallas -- Silva -- Walcott
FW: Soldado -- Giroud -- Anelka

Subs: Davis -- Kim -- Clyne -- Garrido

Any reason why Lamps/Mirallas instead of Silva? Would leave me with a bit less money to spend.

I just think people are being to hasty in dismissing Silva. If his injury is confirmed then sell him but if he's playing I think he's a better option than Lamp and Mirallas. Also there's not much value in the 6.0 - 7.0 price range at the moment anyway.

Quite like it apart from Anelka. Anelka to Bent?

Or maybe you've had enough of Mirallas's antics.

      Mirallas > Pablo Hernandez
      Anelka > Welbeck/Lambert/Bony

Anybody else think that there is a chance of rvp getting rested this weekend?

Played midweek, home game against a promoted side, champions league coming up, city next week away, welbeck on form, kagawa needs games, and utd will be keen to avoid end of season burn out that has affected him for the last 2 seasons.

Am not saying he will but it wouldn't be a huge shock if he was.

      All very very good reasons.

If Man Utd were at the top of the table there would be a decent chance that would happen. But were they not to pick up 3 points on Saturday and RVP remained on the bench, the repercussions for Moyes would be enormous.

I have 14.6m for a defender and a midfielder which do you think is better:

    A) Vert & Barfa
    B) Walker & mid upto 8.6 if so who would you go for?
    C) What position do people see Paulinho taking up for Spurs once the other new players bed in? Is he going to be value or will he just be playing too deep?

    Thanks!

paulinho will play as a defensive mid next to sandro. but unlike the beast, he will get the nod to get forward (he'll be a more box to box mid). I'd go for erikson if want to take a spurs punt.

I would consider walker and Ben Arfa and saving 1m. I think Paulinho will be playing a deep roll now. If AVB plays a 4-2-3-1 then he will sit deep with dembele and if he plays a 4-3-3 then Eriksen will be the one going forward from the midfield trio.

Yeh thats the way I see it too. I'm just not convinced on Barfa his stats look promising but just seems it might just stick to being that and not actually racking up the points.

Might want to consider Chadli then. He has been largely overlooked so far and is only .5m more for a player who has both had several shots and made several chances in the opening few games. He has also had time to settle in and has a nice run of fixtures, while guaranteed a spot unlike Lamela and Eriksen.

      Paulinho is rubbish for FPL.
Vert is too expensive. Just take Walker and save the cash. (or some other 6m defender).
Mid under 8.6? I'd go for Ben Arfa

Another few OPTA stats. Didn't realise the Giroud one.

    - The last six Premier League matches at the Stadium of Light have produced just nine goals.
    - Olivier Giroud has scored in three successive league appearances, but has not scored any of his 14 Barclays Premier League goals outside of London.

    Play brady or silva?

Brady is definitely flavour of the month with the better fixture? But silva is a much better footballer in real life...if he plays?

Last few stoke vs man city games have been 1-1 boring games too....thoughts ?

      Definitely Silva.
But it might not matter if he doesn't play because of injury.
Worst case scenario is Silva coming off the bench.
But even if Brady starts he'll probs only get 2 points. So def Silva

Actually quite an important question. You need to know what you bought your players for to see if you can afford another 0.1 drop without it affecting you or wether you need to hold for that extra rise etc. come later on in the season, you could easily loose track of what price you paid for your squad

Problem with punts on this site:

It's gut instinct at the end of the day. Hernandez is almost a guaranteed starter with Nathan Dyer injured and has looked dangerous so far this season. Sometimes better to go for the more in form player.

Wasn't comparing Nani and P. Hernandez in particular. But before Hernandez scored those points, he was punt. If i. e. Nani scores a brace next gw, same people who said don't go for him he's too punty will tell you don't go for him, you'd be chasing past points. Exaggerated a bit but see that rather often here.

        Wasn't complaining, though, just saying.

      Just go with your gut

The reason it's a punt is because it's unconvential; websites like these don't go for unconventional picks.

It's played safe here, which in the long term will see better results, but not in 'every' instance.

Studge and Tekkers should do fine - RVP might have a barn stormer though, good form in the internationals

If you can get a balanced team with RVP (which i think you can) then the price doesnt matter so much.

I have RVP, Sturridge, Soldado. But Benteke (or Giroud) for RVP is basically just as good IMO. And you save 5 mil.
Obviously, there's a high chance of RVP getting a huge score this week, but it's about the entire season. Not one game. Benteke v CPL and you'll also be hoping for massive points.

I agree that there are so good choices up front for the 3 slots - Giroud, Sturridge, RVP, Soldado.
But nobody seems interested in Bent. I looked at the last 2 games he played and he was way up on the pitch with Berba playing behind.
As Fulham has WBA, che, CAR, STO (3 nice home games), I am tempted to do Dzeko -> Bent.
Who will take penalties - Bent or mighty Berba ?
