Scout Notes – Gameweek 15 – Monday

Michu recovers from injury and manages the full 90 minutes in Swansea’s home draw against Hull. Chico nets for the hosts but is set to miss out miss weekend through suspension, Michel Vorm is likely to require knee surgery, while Robbie Brady warms the Tigers bench as Danny Graham opens his account for the season against his former club:

Michu Back in the Mix
The Spaniard made a surprise return to action last night, having been expected to be sidelined until mid-December. Pre-match, his manager admitted Michu was not yet 100% but still managed to give him the full 90 minutes in the 1-1 draw – given his lack of match-sharpness, his blank against the Tigers was perhaps understandable but it now means he has failed to score in each of his last six league starts for the Swans. Now down to a mere 6% ownership in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and coming in at 8.5, some may still be tempted, but a look at the fixture ticker indicates Swansea have it far from easy over the next few matches – Everton, Chelsea, City, United and Spurs in the next seven suggests last season’s Fantasy phenomenon may well toil to get amongst the goals anytime soon.

Earlier in the day, reports had suggested Wilfried Bony was set to make an appearance from the bench after also recovering quickly from a hamstring injury but Michael Laudrup admitted after the match he’s likely to be a little cautious with the Ivorian:

“Bony is a little better, but we have to be careful because we are talking about a muscle injury. With a muscle injury, if you come back one day too early, you could have a setback and be out for four weeks. We don’t want that.”

Defensive Setbacks for Swans
With three clean sheets in their previous four at the Liberty, a shut-out looked a strong possibility for Swansea last night. Michel Vorm missed out again through an ongoing knee problem, allowing Gerhard Tremmel another chance between the sticks and, whilst the visitors’ early goal killed off the prospects off defensive returns, Chico’s owners were treated to a nine-point haul after the centre-half finally delivered the goal his attacking statistics have hinted at all season. The Spaniard picked up his fifth yellow card of the season late on, however, meaning he will now miss the weekend trip to Norwich. Ashley Williams moved onto the Suspension Tightrope after collecting his fourth booking of the campaign, whilst Laudrup admitted his goalkeeper is likely to require an operation to rectify his problem, though he’s yet to decide when this will take place:

“Michel’s knee is swollen, and he has had a scan today. He can go on, but I think at some point we will have to make a decision at a certain point that he needs surgery. We’re not talking a long period of absence – maybe four or five weeks, maybe a little less.”

Shelvey in the Points Again
Tucked in behind Michu as the most advanced central midfielder, the former Liverpool man supplied the assist for Chico’s equaliser to continue his impressive recent showings. Shelvey has begun to return attacking points at a fairly consistent rate now and has produced the goods in all but one of the last five Gameweeks – with two goals, three assists and three bonus points over that run, he was snapped up by over 161,000 Fantasy managers heading into the weekend deadline and, while his owners will be happy to hold in light of last night’s display, the above-mentioned schedule may be enough to deter many for now.

Brady Benched as Graham Returns to Haunt Swans
While the headlines surrounded Danny Graham’s early opener against his former club, a first goal of the season for the 5.0 priced forward is hardly going to attract Fantasy managers’ attentions. Instead, the omission of Robbie Brady from the Hull XI will have caused plenty consternation to the patient managers who have kept faith in the midfielder over the last few weeks. With Steve Bruce handing Maynor Figueroa the left wing-back role, Brady remained on the visitors’ bench for the entire 90 minutes of the 1-1 draw and now seems to have fallen out of favour due to a lack of form. Owned by 8.7% FPL managers (Liam Rosenior is the second most popular outfield player for Hull with 3.5%), the Republic of Ireland international has now failed to produce any points since Gameweek 6 and now looks set to be offloaded by plenty in light of last night’s non-appearance.

Think my priorities for over Xmas are going to be trying to keep 2FTs each week where possible and keep a squad of players that are playing as much as possible.. With that in mind would you say just Gerrard out is the best option for me this week, leaving my defence as it is?

    Krul
    Evans / Burner / MOlsson
    Hazard / Sess / Gerrard / Ravel
    Rooney (c) / Aguero / Suarez

    Speroni / Kos / Jedinak / Baker

    2FT, 0.2

This is what I've been doing for a while. Its wise play. You've got a bit of security with 2FT, this time of the season is always unpredictable, be it rotation or injuries. At least if you try and keep 2FT most weeks, and just spend the one a week. If anything does happen, you can do something about it. For a -4 you can get 3 new players in, for a daring -8 you can get 4 new players in. You've basically got a new team and by keeping 2FT it enables you to quickly jump on any bandwagons that may start, but also, offers you the option to downgrade one of your players and then use the other FT to upgrade somewhere else. You dont get that luxury with just 1FT. You have to take a hit in that same situation.

"5. England’s left attacking midfield spot is screaming out for Lallana

If Adam Lallana wore the red of Manchester United, this wouldn’t even be a debate. But the fact he plies his trade at Southampton means a couple of off games and his England chances are in major doubt. In comparison, Danny Welbeck appears assured of a spot on the plane to Brazil regardless of what he does over the next six months." So true.

After GW 38 last year, 57 ppg would've earned you 24,977th place.

After GW 15 this year, 61 ppg is good for 91,000th place.

What can we infer from this?

I just think your random person who has a passing interest in the Premier League will pick the likes of Hazard, Aguero, Yaya, Suarez etc.. These players are scoring well so more 'casual' players scoring well.

Last season, I was the only person in my cash Mini League with Michu, the majority of people at work had never even heard of him before.. Not so many players like this in the points this season..

          That's my opinion anyway..

I know no one wants to be seen as looking down on the casuals - and I don't because they get far more points per minute of time invested - but the inescapable truth, if you talk to people in a non-FFS minileague, is that a very large number of people use this strategy or "buy the player who's highest in the overall rankings".

No another stupid question, with Silva coming back and Navas in great form he is not guaranteed starts, he is inconsistent and tends to produce his points in large amounts i.e. 1,1,3,2,13.
Your better of waiting for Silva to return or looking at midpricers such as Yohan's Kebabs and Begovic

van persie is not a must.

rooney is a far better option, and still a differential with 12%!

but i definitely definitely definitely would not sell ozil.

Got Ozil, Ramsey and Giroud so am thinking that I'm a bit Arsenal-heavy, given their difficult fixtures coming up.

Rooney a differential in the game as a whole, but not in my leagues.

Am top of all of my leagues (at the moment) so I guess I shouldn't be thinking about doing anything too drastic!

Hey guys not sure what to do with my team, it is very tight in my ML and none of them have Rooney so I'm thinking about bringing him in..

    My team now is:

    Howard Daniel(or something like that)
    Terry Coleman Vlaar Gabbidon Chester
    Walcott Coutinho Hazard Ramsey Shelvey
    Aguero Suarez Remy

My plan is Remy+Coutinho -> Sterling (Nailed on through christmas it looks like and can be benched) + Rooney

This is for a hit but it is so tempting to get Rooney as the only one in my ML..
This would leave 1m in the bank, possible for upgrading Vlaar to Koscielny after next week or after Arsenals though fixtures?

    Thanks!

So with Vertonghen, Gerrard and Sturridge all set to miss the Liverpool v Spurs game, have we got any predictions?
Chiriches, Rose, Eriksen, Henderson and Agger could all be out as well.

It makes this match remarkably hard to call: 2-2 draw for me.

With Vertonghen out and Suarez in this form Liverpool seem likely to score yet with Gerrard out its hard to see them doing too well, and they always seem to concede, although Spurs aren't scoring many.

Spurs - Liverpool - Poor attack against poor defence, made even poorer by the lack of Gerrard (their already poor ability to pass games out became nonexistent when Gerrard was injured against West Ham). Think Spurs could dominate midfield with their three and keep Liverpool's scoring down. 1-1?

They struggle to retain possession without him though and that's a big part of defending - maybe even more than tackling and pressing. Should see the last 30 mins of them against West Ham, not even remotely the most difficult opponents they'll face - it was panicked, crazy, uncontrolled stuff.
