Versus – Rooney and Lukaku

For the majority of Fantasy managers, the valid options for our three-man frontlines have lessened as the season has unfolded. Olivier Giroud and Daniel Sturridge were quick out the blocks but neither were able to maintain consistency and, as Sergio Aguero and the suspension-free Luis Suarez hit their stride, it’s a case of the South American duo plus one other when it comes to our forwards right now:

Suarez and Aguero are far from cheap but, as their prices continue to escalate in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, they’ve delivered time and again and more than justified the premium outlay required. The Liverpool forward has averaged an astonishing 11.4 points per game and, whilst Aguero’s eight points per game leaves him trailing in the Uruguayan’s wake, it’s an average that’s still head and shoulders above Robin van Persie’s 6.9 over 2012/13.

After delivering 241 points in his first year at Old Trafford, the Dutchman’s position as United’s top forward has been undermined by both injury and Wayne Rooney’s rise to form. As van Persie continues to battle toe and groin problems, Rooney has served up a series of consistent displays under his former Everton mentor, David Moyes. So far, he’s racked up eight goals, seven assists and 18 bonus points, drawing blanks in just three of his 13 appearances and averaging 7 points per game – a ratio bettered only by Suarez and Aguero. Furthermore, at 11.1 in FPL, he’s cheaper than both South Americans and, with games against Villa, West Ham, Hull, Norwich and Swansea in the next six, Rooney looks poised for further attacking returns. Indeed, this afternoon’s news that van Persie will be sidelined for a month after sustaining a thigh injury merely strengthens Rooney’s cause.

Over at his former club, though, Fantasy faith in Romelu Lukaku is building. Since arriving at Goodison in Gameweek 5, the big Belgian has bagged eight goals, three assist and 11 bonus points in 11 appearances. Lukaku has also been highly consistent this term and, registering just three blanks, has averaged 6.4 points per game under the guidance of Roberto Martinez – slightly fewer than Rooney but at a significantly cheaper price of 8.5. As Lukaku steels himself for a schedule rated the most appealing of any side in the next six Gameweeks by our season ticker (FUL, swa, SUN, SOT, sto, NOR), the bandwagon is in full effect – over 96,000 FPL managers have already acquired him this week, more than any other player in the game.

With a big decision to be made, then, we take a look at both players’ displays so far this term – for the purpose of our analysis, Lukaku’s stats are taken purely from his time at Everton, with a couple of late second-half sub appearances for parent club Chelsea discounted.

Dutch coach said Moyes over training would lead to more injuries for RVP. That injury takes RVP nicely through to the January transfer window.

He'll try Kagawa. Probably won't work...Januzaj will be given a go in there at some point I'd wager.

Hernandez has been poor from the start all season, can't hold onto the ball. But he'll probably get 1-2 games over Christmas.

2 starts behind Rooney, 1 from left, 1 bench I'd say.

well i have to say this RvP news has kinda made me regret my Rooney to Lukaku move last week. But I stand by most of reasons for doing it and remain confident that having Ozil and Hazard instead of Brady and Sess will more than compensate for any differences in Lukaku v Rooney.

It was mainly down to what I could do with the cash saved.

If the "Hart returns" rumours are true you have no GK this weekend.

It's normally me asking you for advice but in your position I'd bring in McGregor for Pantylining (good fixture and cash for future moves) then upgrade Cabral for the Xmas period.

Let's face it, whatever you do will probably work 😉

Am I alone in not wanting Rooney in my team and quite happy with Lukaku? United are ninth, really struggling, failed to score at Old Trafford in their last two games and yes I know Rooney was missing for one of those but it's still awful form.

If United were flying high with Arsenal and on great form then yeah I would definitely consider him but I am not paying 11mil for a player in a team that are in mid table. Rooney is the only person that looks capable of doing anything and whilst that is a plus for him, would you be buying Aguero if City were mid table or Suarez if Liverpool were?

They have fixtures on their side but are they just going to magically appear in good form overnight?
I would have thought a player in a team in bad form is going to blank more often than not.

Have I got a point or am I just plain stupid? 🙂

Valid concerns. Remember it is the points of the individual, not the team, that matters though. And Rooney utterly dominates United's points especially with RVP out. Though I fear for the team with RVP out!

I don't have Rooney as I do not see a slot over the next 6 gameweeks to make him captain. That sort of FPL money, requires the individual to be a captain choice .Better options from better PL clubs. 8 goals for United at OT this season with Rooney scoring 41 FPL points. Not exactly magic, is it?

Just a note to Rooney owners

This RvP news does not automatically make him the lead CF. It all depends on what Moyes decides to do. He could play Rooney as the lead striker with Welbeck or Kagawa in the supporting role, this would be good for Rooney.

BUT he could use Rooney in the support role and play Hernandez, this could have a major impact on Rooney's goal output, and will certainly see him drop a lot deeper than he would do with Kagawa or Welbeck (or even RvP)

Yeah, when he was leading the line. Chicharito will get games this month. The fact that 3 of the next 4 are away though makes me think Moyes will play more of a 451 with Kagawa behind Rooney. In any case, with the midfield so weak, there is always the option of bringing on Hernandez to keep the opposition CBs on their toes while Rooney drops deeper to help control the game.

If we are talking about what's happened so far, you'd have been better off with Lukaku since his Everton move + 9M mid over Rooney and whatever mid you can come up with between 5-7M

I sold Rooney for Lukaku last week. Not a massive stretch to get Rooney back given I've already made 0.1 on Lukaku (the exact amount I've lost on Rooney). But atm, Lukaku's form, fixtures and price mean that, although I'd like Rooney, I'm quite happy with Lukaku

I think you guys could suck extra hard with RVP out.

That said if you do score it's very likely to involve Rooney. The guy is on a big 65% goal involvement right now. It's just how few are you going to score with RVP and Carrick out.

The times I've seen him with Hernandez yes he's played deeper but it won't be anything like him playing in CM last season will it?

no he won't be a CM for sure, he'll be a number 10, floating between the lines. Agreed though, IF we score Rooney will likely have some involvement

Truthfully i think had I been 100% confident of getting 11 out last week I may have benched him, as it was I wasn't and I was proved right. On that basis alone my move was justified

Yeah Lukaku has paid off for you, the jammy assist (slight payback from FPL there for the jamminess you've encountered in your minileague) turned you a decent profit too. So really I think it's win-win for both Lukaku and Rooney owners. Both are well set up and neither has to be the loser. It's like those dumb Ronaldo v Messi debates lol.

If Moyes knows any better, he wouldn't start Hernandez. He offers nothing when he starts. I'd rather he had the chance to watch the game for 60min and come in when defenders are tired and when he's had a bit of time to analyze defender movements etc.

I was going to, but then I swapped him for Shelvey after he played 90 minutes last night.

Just reading the news. Even with RVP out, it's still about the money for that third spot -- if you can afford Rooney and 3-4 elite mids, then he's the choice; if you can't then it's Lukaku/Remy plus 3-4 big mids.

There are basically five highly productive forwards who are relatively fixture proof and the clear talismen for their teams, so any three of them can get you double figures on any weekend. We just can't have them all this season.

      Pretty much this

If one takes it that Suarez and Aguero have 2 spots locked, then you're basically left with one of Rooney, Lukaku and Remy, and their PPGs are all roughly similar. Lukaku's is dragged down by his lack of minutes at Chelsea.

Neither one really looks like a better option than other, they all get double figues any given week, they also blank any given week.

Cheers -- I feel many of us were hoarders last season with five high-performing midfielders making us feel secure that we had all of them (or at least 5/6) in our possession. This season, we can only own 3 forwards and we can't help look at what we don't have.

This is coming from someone who owned Benteke for the past 7 weeks.

Yep. Keeping all three means you're not at risk of selling a haul.
