Scout Scribbles – Aguero Sidelined for City

Sergio Aguero is out until mid-January with a calf injury. Nathan Dyer is sidelined with ankle ligament damage. Ben Foster hits the comeback trail, Ron Vlaar remains a doubt for Villa, while Mauricio Pochettino reveals a knock forced Adam Lallana onto the Southampton bench at Newcastle last time around:

Aguero Ruled Out by Calf Injury

Both Manuel Pellegrini and Sergio Aguero confirmed the player is set for “at least one month” on the sidelines with the calf complaint that forced him off early on in the second-half of Saturday’s 6-3 win over Arsenal.

Speaking to the press ahead of the midweek Capital One Cup clash against Leicester, the City boss confirmed the news that is set to spark a scramble right across the Fantasy games:

“I think he will be, at least, one month out. He has a calf injury. Maybe the doctor can say exactly how many weeks he will be.”

Aguero then took to twitter to give his followers an update on the injury:

“It’s confirmed – my calf injury will leave me out for at least a month. The good news is recovery work starts today!”

The Scout Says: As the festive fixtures pick up pace, a month’s absence would force Aguero out of the next five Gameweeks against Fulham, Liverpool, Palace, Swansea and Newcastle. United’s Wayne Rooney is the favoured replacement but his move to a more withdrawn berth for Sunday’s win at Villa has seen some Fantasy managers reassess their plans, with Alvaro Negredo offering a relatively cheap  9.4 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) – route into City’s attack all the way to the winter wildcard. A move for the Spaniard would also retain coverage of Pellegrini’s attack, though with David Silva, Yaya Toure and Samir Nasri all impressing against the Gunners, there are plenty of options in midfield for those who reckon Pellegrini could switch to 4-5-1 and perhaps look to the mobility of Silva to offer his compatriot support as the lone forward.

Pochettino Explains Lallana Sub Role

The Southampton manager has revelaed Adam Lallana was handed a spot on the bench against Newcastle on Saturday after picking up a knock prior to the trip to St James’ Park.

“Adam had a slight injury and he wasn’t fully fit to be playing the full 90 minutes. We are not going to take any risks with our players. We thought he could come on in the second half as a sub and have an impact and we’re delighted at the way that he did.”

The Scout Says: Having started every league match up until last weekend, Lallana had been one of the few ever-presents under the Argentine this season. Given that Pochettino is without a number of injured first-team options, his decision to court caution with his captain’s fitness is understandable ahead of the Christmas schedule and is somewhat reassuring for Lallana’s 17% owners. Nonetheless, with attacking returns in just one of the last eight matches, Saturday’s bench role looks the final straw for many – over 19,000 have sold him since the weekend, more than any other midfielder in the FPL game.

Toffees Confirm Deulofeu Hamstring Scan Results

Everton have issued an update on Gerard Deulofeu, who was stretchered off in Saturday’s win over Fulham after sustaining a hamstring injury. A report in the club’s official website states:

“Scans have now shown the extent of the soft tissue injury in his right hamstring, which is likely to keep him out for a few weeks.”

The Scout Says: The youngster’s enforced absence looks good news for owners of Kevin Mirallas over the kind upcoming schedule. The Belgian was omitted from the first XI against the Cottagers as Roberto Martinez allowed Deulofeu the role on the right of the front three, after he climbed off the bench to fire an equaliser at the Emirates. Granted, there are other options for the Everton boss but it’s noticeable that on both occasions Mirallas has been dropped, it has been at Deulofeu’s expense. With his only real competition sitting in the treatment room, the 7.2-priced Belgian will be looking to replicate his late goal against the Cottages over a run which pits the Merseysiders against Swansea, Sunderland, Southampton, Stoke and Norwich in the next five.

Foster on the Comeback Trail

The Baggies first-choice stopper is edging towards a return after turning out for the club’s reserves. Foster lasted the planned 45 minutes before making way at the break in a 2-0 defeat to Man City:

The Scout Says: Sidelined since Gameweek 2 with a broken foot, Foster’s absence has afforded Boaz Myhill the chance to keep goal for the last three months. The Welshman has managed just three clean sheets over his 14 appearances for the midlands outfit and looks set to continue at home to Hull this weekend as Foster increases his match fitness with the club’s second-string side. After the Tigers’ visit, West Brom face three road trips in four but, with Steve Clarke sent packing after a run of two points from six games, many will be more than happy to steer clear until performances pick up under the club’s new manager.

Scans Confirm Ligament Damage for Dyer

Swansea have revealed Nathan Dyer is set to be sidelined with ankle ligament damage after being stretchered off during Sunday’s draw at Norwich. While initial fears of a suspected break have been allayed, the club have admitted they are uncertain over the length of absence after the winger sustained “ruptured lateral ligament and further damage to two other ligaments”.

The Scout Says: Having scored in three of the last six Gameweeks, including the weekend game with Norwich, Dyer’s absence is a real blow at a time where the Welsh club continue to toil for goals. Michu has drawn blanks in each of the last two since returning from knee and ankle problems and has now failed to score in seven appearances, with just two strikes to his name all term. With Wayne Routledge looking a peripheral figure under Laudrup, Alex Pozuelo’s Fantasy stock may be set to rise – coming in at a mere 4.2, he’d started four successive league fixtures from Gameweek 11-14 before being utilised as a sub over the last two.

Vlaar Still a Weekend Doubt

Paul Lambert confirmed it is “too early” to decide whether his skipper will return in time for Saturday’s trip to Stoke. Vlaar also rolled out an injury update on the Villa official website, going on to say:

“Like any other player, I do everything possible to remain at peak fitness but I felt my calf during the first half at St Mary’s and it really stiffened up at half-time so there was no point in continuing. Hopefully it won’t be too long before I’m back because I remember how infuriating it was to be out of action last winter.”

The Scout Says: Subbed off at the break in the Gameweek 14 loss to Southampton, Vlaar’s absence has been significant to his side’s defensive displays. Paul Lambert’s side have conceded at least twice in each of the last three league matches – prior to the Dutchman’s absence, they had registered three clean sheets in four. The short-term fixtures are still in Villa’s favour (sto, CPL, SWA, sun) and suggest that if Vlaar recovers quickly, the prospects of defensive returns look set to take a turn for the better – with a run against Arsenal, Liverpool and Everton from Gameweek 24, though, those holding Lambert’s defenders may well be plotting an escape route with the winter wildcards.

Couple of decisions on who to start that I'm struggling with for the weekend...

    Speroni or Krul?

    Baker or MOlsson?

The RMT Tool favours Speroni by 0.12 and Baker by 0.08... Should I go with that?

Unless something happens in the league cup games (injuries), im pretty much set on this for -4

Walker -> M. Olsson (Rotates quite nicely with Ward)
    Morrison -> Silva

    Already did Aguero -> Lukaku.

Leaves me room for Coutinho -> Walcott for next GW.

    Seems reasonable?

OK, excuse the noob question but ...

Doesn't the risk of doing these transfers early in the week and having injuries/issues later in the week forcing a second round of tranfers outweigh the marginal price hit from last minute transfers ?

Depends on your budget. Some transfers you intend to do could be a 0.2 swing (ie target rises 0.1, player you want rid of drops 0.1) and budgets might not allow that. Any transfer is a risk but some might feel it's a risk worth taking from a budget perspective. That's for the budget conscious player.

If you're more risk averse, best is always to wait for all team news to come in hoping that a manager is 100% transparent. But as seen recently, it's not always the case as players might pick up knocks on Friday training itself, get dropped, etc. Eg: Moyes in particular, and no one saw Lallana being benched this past week

I've gone for the cautious approach this year as can be liable to make rash decisions early in GW and end regretting it (expensively) later on.

Considered untold options last week, ended up making no changes and got 102 so gonna stick with that plan til it goes t1ts up ....

Might be wise. Less certainly is more sometimes ay. I once got RVP (arsenal days) for -4 only for him to break his ankle midweek. Last couple seasons I generally didn't trade until Friday/Saturday but my value was always quite low despite scoring fairly well. Thought I'd try to chase the value more this season and see how it goes. Don't risk it on Champions League weeks etc though.
In short after 6 seasons I'm still trying to figure out which is best 😉

Interesting that despite Rooney playing deep, his and Negredo average position weren't far apart. However, against Arsenal, Negredo managed 5 attempts on goal with 5 touches in the area, Rooney, against Villa, managed just 2 attempts, and 2 touches in the area.

As for Rooney being used as the 'playmaker' he created once chance all game, seems like he was more a dictator of play rather than a direct assist threat.

Yup. He was more a dictator of play rather than a playmaker against villa. For counter attacks in particular, he mostly stayed back and let Cleverley Valencia and Welbeck break. No choice there as he was better suited to cover for Giggs' lack of legs.

It was weird to watch Rooney deliberately checking his runs, and falling back after passing the ball off to an attacker.

I also think this was a "product" of how they lined up their midfield (incredibly weak with Jones having to play CB, Fellaini out, Fletcher not fit yet, Carrick out). With (hopefully) more ooomph coming in for the good run of games he'll be freer to operate in a more attacking role like he has so far this season.

Correct. It was purely because Giggs was in the middle. If Cleverley and Jones play in the middle, Rooney is up top.

What i fear is that it worked for that game in particular and Moyes might be tempted to play Giggs again. Imo I think it only worked because there was no Delph and hence no pace in the Villa transition game. Against WHU they have stronger and faster players in the middle, Giggs will get steamrolled imo.

That's why he's been doing well in the CL as well. Slower pace, more time on the ball. WHU are going to press and if Giggs starts, I'm very sure United will struggle.

Planning to do Cabaye (STK) > Walcott (whu) next week. Should I keep Cabaye considering his easy fixture and watch Walcott rising and maybe doing some damage to Chelsea, or go for the transfer?

In the absence of any terrible weather, the january wildcard does not currently provide an opportunity for a double-gameweek; I'mtherefore feeling a bit lost about how best to maximise it's potential.

Does anyone have any thoughts/tips for the WC?

    - cut the rot and build a team for the rest of the season?
    - play the wildcard the same weeks as the masses, and trade my way to success?
    - build a team to dominate in the short-term (say 3 to 6 weeks), and trade my way out of danger afterwards?
    - copy the template and then find some differentials?
    - stock up on the best value defenders from the top teams, as their defences tighten in the second half of the season?

It's a boring Tuesday morning, so would be good to get a conversation going on this one.

As I am lacking in cash, I think I am going to try and build a super cheap rotation friendly defence; That will allow me to stock up on big hitters at the front.

I also think that I am going to go without Aguero.

"As I am lacking in cash, I think I am going to try and build a super cheap rotation friendly defence; That will allow me to stock up on big hitters at the front."

Always works as a tactic in previous seasons. And now as the big hitters in MF resume normal duties I think it's wise. Clean sheets are harder than ever to pick with too many teams leaking a single "consolation".

I think in seasons gone people would have been fairly satisfied with a striker giving those returns.

The explosions of Suarez and Aguero have made everyone expect 15 point hauls all the time. May need to readjust expectations if the big dogs get injured (i.e Aguero)

      It's not cut and dry.

I'd suggest that he will make it on Saturday (allowing you to make the transfer on the first day of the next gameweek instead).

He's been creeping over. But I reckon if he hits 70-80% by Thursday, he will rise by deadline once the Friday transfers come in.

Yup, i'll leave it as late as possible if i bring him in. But my guess is he will reach the rise. People might be waiting for the midweek game out of the way.

Aguero, Sessengon and Terry for Rooney, Silva and Rafael?

Yeh, it seems a strong 11/12 for this week so saving the FT to get 2 next week will be useful.

Thanks guys, always good to get other peoples opinions before doing anything drastic!

Personally, I'd want Walcott and Silva in my team eventually so i'm just going to do it anyway this week. Ozil & Sess > Walcott & Silva for a hit. Not excited about selling Ozil and could very well end up with egg in my face for this week, but it will pay off eventually.

My other transfer options to get Silva in this week also involve a hit. Either way I'm going to have to take a hit, so might as well get both Walcott and Silva in and be happy with my midfield for once! 🙂 Hazard Ramsey Silva Walcott 😛

    Migs,

    Debuchy, Ward, Coleman

    Ramsey, Nasri, Hazard, Coutinho

    Lukaku, Suarez (C), Rooney (VC)

    Lewis, Barkley, Chester, B.Turner

2 million in the bank, 1 FT left. I'm thinking of saving it this week, then upgrading Nasri and Coutinho to Walcott and Silva next week? That suspension threat for Silva is off putting and Nasri's general play is good.

Coutinho has a nice fixtures this week, and Walcott has Chelsea so hesitating to make that move this week.

IMO that's their best back 4 but best off seeing how he rates Nastasic vs Demichelis. Nastasic is rated higher than Lescott etc. but him, Kompany and Demichelis haven't all been fit at the same time.

I've had Evans for a while, and it's not really worked out at all. However, IF Moyes settles on him and either Vidic/Jones as a center pairing it has to come good I imagine. Smalling's the weakest link and the worry for managers looking at Man U defence.

Best Man U defence? For me:

      Rafael, Jones, Evans, Evra

Vidic is looking a shadow of previous years.

It's a price thing innit? Rafael is £0.9m more than Evans - which is too much for me as the big hitters start to gain some form.

Yeah thought he was cheaper. Still think he can be a great option. Goals and assists in him and you never know when Evans might be out of favour

Indeed. 5.9 is good value when and if they can settle. Feels like Moyes was doing way too much diplomacy and needs to take control of his best 11.
