The Dugout Discussion – Liverpool vs Cardiff

Saturday offers up the uncomfortable scenario of an early kick-off captain. Luis Suarez dominated our thinking going into the Gameweek, running away with our Captain poll has thousands backed him for his home clash with Cardiff. That Anfield encounter provides the day’s opener and a potential points haul or major failure from the off.

The team news from Anfield finds few surprises from Brendan Rodgers’ lineup as he keeps the same starting XI that destroyed Spurs at the Lane. Raheem Sterling and Joe Allen retain their starting roles in midfield, while Dan Agger is amongst the substitutes as Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho form the centre-back partnership once again. Malky Mackay is under the media microscope for today’s match in the light of the seemingly untenable relationship with club owner Vincent Tan. In what could be his last Cardiff team selection, Mackay chooses to recall Aron Gunnarsson in place of striker Frazier Campbell in the only change to the side that won three points against West Brom last time out.

Our Dugout Discussion chatroom is now open to provide a real-time platform for your views for this match and will remain throughout the day’s action.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Couple of points:

The Liverpool midfield looks so much better without Gerrard; much more mobile, much better passing, making much better interplay. All they're missing is his undeniably brilliant set plays.

Can you believe how well Lucas has been passing today from deep? Such crisp and incisive passes, it's hard to believe he's the same player. I think the difference is that the midfield three now fully rotate instead of Lucas holding behind static Gerrard, making both static.

Henderson's form (and Sterling's too) has been praised before - his understanding with Suarez is becoming telepathic.

Flanagan already looks much better attacking than GJ who is often ponderous in possession. Both had two great chances this game receiving passes in the box. Flanagan shot in from a difficult angle and it came down to a goalline decision. GJ had the touch of a horny badger and miskicked it into Marshall's hands.

Finally, the formation is so fluid it's hard to pin down. It looks like a loose 4-3-3 with Sterling definitely on the right, Suarez definitely the striker. The rest is pretty open. I think it's roughly Lucas/Allen/Henderson the middle three with Coutinho drifting in so much from the left that he's playing in the centre. Flanagan providing the width down the left.

Only noticed him because he isn't. Playing attacking passes straight into the final third from the halfway line. I had to look twice to make sure it was Lucas.

Flash forward to the beginning of next season... Remember this year when there was much gnashing of teeth over whether or not to have RVP at 14.0 on your team? Imagine how much Suarez will cost next year. Is it possible to exceed 14.0? Will we all be having the same discussion? If this ridiculous 12+ points per game keeps up, he'll be beyond essential. Will he even still be in the Premier League? I'm not going to lose sleep over it now since I'm enjoying the ride and happy that I paid 10.9 for Suarez, but one does wonder...
