Drop the Flop

Drop the Flop – Gameweek 22

We’ve all been there. That light-bulb moment when you see a player hint at form and suddenly present themselves as the perfect transfer to help propel yourself up your mini-league.

Sure, they’ve only scored one goal and picked up a scrappy assist over the last few Gameweeks, but Fantasy Football success is built on such risks. Flash forward a few weeks, however, and you’re left with a player wasting a precious spot in your starting XI who has suddenly developed a penchant for two-point returns.

This new feature shines a spotlight on a selection of such flops and looks for ways to remedy the situation and help Fantasy managers to ditch the accumulated deadwood:

Glen Johnson – Last four Gameweeks: 2 points

So often a reliable source of both defensive and attacking points in years gone by (a goal, five assists and 16 clean sheets in 2012/13), the Liverpool full back has disappointed many this time around. His defensive prospects looked sky high after producing clean sheets in each of the opening three Gameweeks, but with only a trio of shut-outs since then, the value of Liverpool’s rearguard assets has tumbled significantly.

At the other end of the pitch, the 5.8-priced Johnson has far from succeeded in making up for his lack of defensive returns. He’s contributed just one assist all season, back in Gameweek 15, and has failed to reward the 28,000 Fantasy Premier League managers who snapped up his services for the following Gameweek. He has returned a measly four points since then and, with a Merseyside derby and the visit of Arsenal on the horizon, its time this Flop made a swift exit.

Having registered five clean sheets in the last nine Gameweeks, Sunderland’s defensive assets are offering superior value at the moment. Amidst a superb set of fixtures, Gus Poyet’s first-choice back-four are at least 1.0 cheaper than the Reds defender and offer differential appeal, with Phil Bardsley’s two goals thus far furthering his case.

On the other hand, the premium backlines are also hitting form right now. Patrice Evra, Seamus Coleman and John Terry may well be costly alternatives to Johnson but are all plundering the points at the moment and carry significant potential for attacking returns. Further up the price bracket is Leighton Baines who, recently back from the sidelines, has quickly demonstrated his worth by picking up double figures (including maximum bonus points) in his last two games. Worth the extra outlay? He just might be.

Peter Whittingham – Last four Gameweeks – 8 points

Cast your mind back a few Gameweeks and, in the heat of the festive schedule, the allure of Peter Whittingham was sitting at a season-high. Embarking on a superb run of fixtures from Boxing Day onwards, the set-piece specialist highlighted his potential as a top transfer target with a goal, assist and bonus points over Gameweek 16 and 17 and was resultantly drafted in by 75,000 managers over the subsequent three Gameweeks.

Since Boxing Day, however, Whittingham has done everything but spread post-Christmas joy. Two point hauls in each of the last four fixtures left those who acquired him ruing the decision to opt for the winger over in-form team-mate Jordan Mutch. True, he is still the top-scoring midfielder under 7.0, but with the fixture list now taking a severe turn for the worse with ties against both Manchester sides looming, and new Cardiff boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first signing Magnus Wolff Eikrem challenging Whittingham’s starting spot, it might just be the time to cut your losses and go in search of a replacement.

With January Wildcards to wield, managers might well have the luxury of spare budget to utilise in going about replacing this Flop. Adam Lallana is available for less than 2.0 more than Whittingham and offers almost the whole package – the fourth highest-scoring midfielder in the game boasts form, security of starts and a decent schedule ahead (SUN, ars, ful, STK, HUL). On the other hand, for those looking to free up budget elsewhere, Adnan Januzaj, Steve Sidwell, Raheem Sterling and Ki Sung-Yueng all have appeal. At 0.6 cheaper than Whittingham, the latter has picked up two sets of double figures in his last four games and has a mere 0.7% ownership, making him a strong differential and a significant climber on our Watchlist.

I am currently 39 points behind my rival who has Suarez as captain, would putting the armband on Negredo( who he doesnt have) be a bad move? Or would it make sense?

This just made me laugh too hard. On Sky Sports website, there is some article/video titled Superstar Q&A. This is what they write as the opening blurb under the video: "Messi, Van Persie, Wilshere and Aguero are just some of the world icons who discuss their roles in football as part of the global launch of Pepsi's 'Live For Now' campaign." How in God's good name does Wilshere get grouped in with these proven superstars? (yeah, it's a Pepsi-backed piece, and I think he might be sponsored by them....but still.....c'mon. At least give the kid time to perhaps develop into a star........he certainly isn't, or shouldn't be there yet.)

How do I look for this week?

    Speroni (STK)

Sagna (FUL) Terry (MUN) Clyne (sun)

Hazard (MUN) Yaya (CAR) Cabaye (whm) Lallana (sun)

Lukaku (wba) Remy (whm) Suarez (AVL) (C)

Bench: Mannone (SOU) Ward (STK) Davies (nor) Barkley*

I know there are some small issues, like not having any attacking Arsenal cover, and doubling up on Newcastle attack vs a West Ham side that are solid at home. But I'll be getting rid of Cabaye and Remy when I wildcard, and I don't think that it's worth doing a transfer like Hazard --> Ozil or Lukaku --> Giroud when Hazard and Lukaku could both score decent points.

Plus, my ML rivals both have Lukaku and one of them has Hazard, I'm top of the league and I want to have less differentials as possible, as I'm top of the league and have more chance of staying top if I'm scoring the same amount of points as the guys below me.

    Thoughts?

Hey guys, apologies if people read this earlier but the crowd seems different enough to offer this up again.

    For those of you on a tight budget, fancy that extra big hitting midfielder, or are struggling to find a way to fit Aguero in, below is a cheap defensive option that offers some great fixtures;

Chester - Ward - Williamson - Collins - Clyne = 21.3mil (if buying all players today, Collins looks set to drop so could probably be bought for even cheaper)

    Playing 3 a week gives you;

    GW22 // sun - nor - STO
    GW23 // cpl - nor - HUL
    GW24 // SUN - SWA - ful
    GW25 // STO - WBA - sun/avl
    GW26 // SOT - NOR - hul
    GW27 // AVL - SOT - whm/car
    GW28 // NEW - hul - swa
    GW29 // HUL - SOT - cpl/whm
    GW30 // NOR - ful - sto/sun
    GW31 // WBA - CPL - new
    GW32 // NEW - sto - sot/sun
    GW33 // SWA - car - MAN
    GW34 // CAR - AVL - sto
    GW35 // SWA - CPL - avl/whm
    GW36 // ful - wba - EVE
    GW37 // avl - CAR - swa
    GW38 // ful - EVE - MUN

    Yes it means not having Coleman or a 'Big Hitter', however would you really miss those players with a front eight of;

    Hazard - Silva - Cazorla - Ramsey - Januzaj
    Aguero - Rooney - Suarez

I think you would. Defenders can score pretty well these days, especially those that are scoring or assisting with something akin to regularity. Just compare Coleman's points to Januzaj, for example.....Also, as long as someone like Coleman is healthy, he will start every game. I really don't fancy Cazorla in there either. Just don't think you're making a sound enough argument. That defense looks pretty terrible. You gotta have at least one better option in there.

It's only a suggestion to offer up something different to the usual ideas that are offered around here. There would also be ways to improve the defence, Silva > Navas for example frees up 1mil, Januzaj > 4.4mil midfielder again frees up money to make improvements, but I haven't explored what that would do to the fixtures yet

I like the general concept. Maybe just not some of the players your example. Of course, it could be tinkered with to fit a specific person's preference. I do think you're onto something on the whole. And, it's always good to offer up a viewpoint that others may have not considered.:)

Yes I just went for the cheapest first team players with solid defensive returns. It's something that I'll be looking into a bit more tonight before Aguero's price rise

      Not for me sorry.

You don't need Janu as an 8th attacker and Cazorla is no better than Lallana/Cabaye/Eriksen for 2M cheaper.

That extra 3M could give you Coleman and Zaba (assuming you already have Coleman) over Collins and Clyne.

Coleman, Zaba, Lallana (Parker) v Collins, Clyne, Cazorla (Januzaj) is a no brainer for me.

Agree that Januzaj doesn't need to be there but it's just an observation. Also not sure what introducing the big hitters does to the rotating fixtures and I'd agree that one big hitter would be better, but it's mainly to show people who have become a bit blinkered into having certain players (myself included) that there are other alternatives available

Yep I get the idea. But the best defensive assets can score as many points as most high priced mids. For example I'd back lots of defenders (Baines, Coleman, Kompany, Zaba) to outscore Cazorla over the rest of the season.

Thanks for the legwork. I'm not sold on the concept in the 2nd half of the season as I've seen stats/articles suggesting that big clubs tighten up due to their superior manpower and talent advantages.

I'm spending big on 3-3-3 and then using a good rotation at both 4th/5th def and 4th/5th mid for that tenth spot in my lineup.

              Indeed

              Need a differential

West Ham have nice fixtures from GW24 and he is crucial to them. I like Bony but i also wonder about rotation when Europa re-starts. A 1 week punt for me, as he a beast at home right now and Fulham are awful.
