Drop the Flop

Drop the Flop – Gameweek 22

We’ve all been there. That light-bulb moment when you see a player hint at form and suddenly present themselves as the perfect transfer to help propel yourself up your mini-league.

Sure, they’ve only scored one goal and picked up a scrappy assist over the last few Gameweeks, but Fantasy Football success is built on such risks. Flash forward a few weeks, however, and you’re left with a player wasting a precious spot in your starting XI who has suddenly developed a penchant for two-point returns.

This new feature shines a spotlight on a selection of such flops and looks for ways to remedy the situation and help Fantasy managers to ditch the accumulated deadwood:

Glen Johnson – Last four Gameweeks: 2 points

So often a reliable source of both defensive and attacking points in years gone by (a goal, five assists and 16 clean sheets in 2012/13), the Liverpool full back has disappointed many this time around. His defensive prospects looked sky high after producing clean sheets in each of the opening three Gameweeks, but with only a trio of shut-outs since then, the value of Liverpool’s rearguard assets has tumbled significantly.

At the other end of the pitch, the 5.8-priced Johnson has far from succeeded in making up for his lack of defensive returns. He’s contributed just one assist all season, back in Gameweek 15, and has failed to reward the 28,000 Fantasy Premier League managers who snapped up his services for the following Gameweek. He has returned a measly four points since then and, with a Merseyside derby and the visit of Arsenal on the horizon, its time this Flop made a swift exit.

Having registered five clean sheets in the last nine Gameweeks, Sunderland’s defensive assets are offering superior value at the moment. Amidst a superb set of fixtures, Gus Poyet’s first-choice back-four are at least 1.0 cheaper than the Reds defender and offer differential appeal, with Phil Bardsley’s two goals thus far furthering his case.

On the other hand, the premium backlines are also hitting form right now. Patrice Evra, Seamus Coleman and John Terry may well be costly alternatives to Johnson but are all plundering the points at the moment and carry significant potential for attacking returns. Further up the price bracket is Leighton Baines who, recently back from the sidelines, has quickly demonstrated his worth by picking up double figures (including maximum bonus points) in his last two games. Worth the extra outlay? He just might be.

Peter Whittingham – Last four Gameweeks – 8 points

Cast your mind back a few Gameweeks and, in the heat of the festive schedule, the allure of Peter Whittingham was sitting at a season-high. Embarking on a superb run of fixtures from Boxing Day onwards, the set-piece specialist highlighted his potential as a top transfer target with a goal, assist and bonus points over Gameweek 16 and 17 and was resultantly drafted in by 75,000 managers over the subsequent three Gameweeks.

Since Boxing Day, however, Whittingham has done everything but spread post-Christmas joy. Two point hauls in each of the last four fixtures left those who acquired him ruing the decision to opt for the winger over in-form team-mate Jordan Mutch. True, he is still the top-scoring midfielder under 7.0, but with the fixture list now taking a severe turn for the worse with ties against both Manchester sides looming, and new Cardiff boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first signing Magnus Wolff Eikrem challenging Whittingham’s starting spot, it might just be the time to cut your losses and go in search of a replacement.

With January Wildcards to wield, managers might well have the luxury of spare budget to utilise in going about replacing this Flop. Adam Lallana is available for less than 2.0 more than Whittingham and offers almost the whole package – the fourth highest-scoring midfielder in the game boasts form, security of starts and a decent schedule ahead (SUN, ars, ful, STK, HUL). On the other hand, for those looking to free up budget elsewhere, Adnan Januzaj, Steve Sidwell, Raheem Sterling and Ki Sung-Yueng all have appeal. At 0.6 cheaper than Whittingham, the latter has picked up two sets of double figures in his last four games and has a mere 0.7% ownership, making him a strong differential and a significant climber on our Watchlist.

    Evening all!

about to press the button on my WC team.. so intense!
    Going for a 4-3-3

    Coleman Baines Kosc Kol (ward)

    Haz Ozil Navas (ki) (poz)

    Stuzza Negro Suarez

    -----

    0.1 ITB

Had Aguero in for 2 days but kicked him out last minute and will do:

    Anything really daft?
    Your thoughts would be appreciated.

I am currently on WC and are thinking the same. I got the same forward line as you, and also probably gonna do Neg-->Kun and Oz-->Ramboo in two weeks time.

Abit worried about you having two bench fodders in the midfield, i would free up some cash in defense and get either Lallana/Eriksen. If needed even get rid of Navas and get both Lallana and Eriksen (or Cabaye, if you prefer him over either, -i dont)

        I hear you..

decided to go for pretty big defence tho.. figure with baines and coleman i'll basically never want to drop them and their PPGs stand up to and even beat good mids like lallana... should give me an edge over my ML leader who has already WC and everyone pretty much has coleman.

coouldn't drop any of the D so had to down grade silva and go supacheap as my TV ain't stunning. i've tried to get the most points possible this GW and not plan too far ahead!

your moves probably do make more sense tho.

i'm going all out and basing my team on City, Pool, ARS and EV all caning their opposition..

not a fan of keeper rotation.. prefer to stick and not worry and feel boruc is undervalued.

can see what you're saying would be safer definitely.
but double attack and DEF and light mid are the characteristic of the team. so i'll live and die by it.. ha

Be prepared to get very similar advice on this team. You'll hear a lot about how you've got too much in defense but if that's where you want to put your money then why not. Not owning Aguero could hurt you, but Negredo could substitute some of the points.

I'd potentially do Ward > Chester/Bruce just to get a bit of money back, and that should help boost someone if needs be.

It's slightly different to the usual teams in certain places but that isn't a negative

Can anyone tell me exactly how price rises work?

When TotalFPL are reporting XXX%, what is that measure? A percentage of what?

The only other metrics they provide are Daily NTI, and Ownership. Some simple maths is enough to determine there's no simple function of these two which can yield the percentages they quote.

I think I need to downgrade Ozil to accommodate Aguero.

Is having Wilshere as a placeholder until Ramsey returns a decent idea? I'm not buying into a Wilshere as a great long term fantasy prospect but he was seemingly in many advanced positions vs. Villa not to mention higher up the pitch that Ozil.

Will keep hold for a week or two until Ramsey gets back in the side.

Heheh, good argument and since youre 100% certain i guess youre right.

          Lets me give some arguments against Aguero starting ;

He has just been out with an injury and might get eased back into action.
Pellegrini can afford easing him into action, given the relative weak opponent at home.
Dzeko is performing very well at the moment.
Negredo is performing very well at the moment.

He might start, i dont think so.

Long post alert - but I'm starting to wonder whether Negredo might be a better pick than Aguero.

Everyone is desperately clamouring to get Kun in (144% an climbing as I write - lots of wasted txfers??)
….but I wonder whether Negredo mightn't hold his own in comparison.

Is Pelle going to play lone striker with Kun in the PL for the next 2-3 months ?
Citeh have done well with Dzeko & Negredo in tandem, and with niggling injuries (plus a howler for Nasri) in midfield I can't see him rushing to change the winning formula of 2 forwards. The owners want attacking (winning) football after all....

Dzeko seems 3rd in line to the throne, so Kun & Negs should garner most time.

Which one of the 3 will Pelle want to protect most for CL ?….. I reckon Kun - and if so - Negredo faces plenty of minutes of league action.

Yes Kun can be superbly explosive….but he's played in PL for years. Negredo is adjusting fast, and there's surely a chance that he could be just as influential in the second half of this season as Kun - especially if he gets more minutes on the park.

Do you think Pelle will simply rotate Negs & Dzeko to partner Kun….or will Kun get more of a share of the rest to keep him fresh for CL and the run-in ?

I'm thinking I quite fancy Negredo as a 'differential' against Aguero.

…….Tell me to check Kun's scoring stats….tell me the Beast is a donkey…..tell me I'm mad...
    ….NURSE ?!

Watch City play with both Negredo and Aguero. It's obvious Aguero is the bigger threat. As for rotation, you may be right, but then City have a good chance of going straight out to Barca. By then Aguero could be 13+

I see your point but i think you are reaching for a differential that's not really there. Kun will out score negredo by far in all matchs where the two have played together Negredo plays deeper and is a great supplier but Kun is the finisher and although the stats are glowing for Negredo he has missed a boat load of chances that Kun simply would not! 🙂

Wary of how much to invest against amount of game time. Would love to wait & see whether he gets eased in, but price rising so fast - could be 0.5 more expensive in 2 weeks.

His stats are very deceptive. Most of his shots are from outside the box and now that he playing on the left, his creativity stats will suffer too.

    @HVT

    IMO you should forget Aguero

Navas, Willian and Flamini are now essential, I suggest you take an 8 point hit and get them in for Silva, Hazard and Ozil immediately, whilst you're at it, you don't need Mert either, throw in a -12 for Hangeland, he'll do well this week

Normally a fair few transfers done at the last minute so you get to see what happens there.

Also a minor point but next GW is midweek so we'll get some team news before the first set of games, might give the option to punt on say Chicarito if he was to start.
