The Community Round Up

The short supply of Fantasy Football mavericks and the dangers of daring to be different were among key issues being discussed by the community this week. Elsewhere in our round-up, we assess how the throngs reacted to the Manchester derby blank, and Juan Mata’s move to Old Trafford.

There’s also time to find out the origins behind some of the community’s notable usernames and catch up on the latest from our community leagues, where a certain member of the Fantasy Football Scout team continues to cast aside all but one very “special” Fantasy manager.

The Hottest Topics

Just what has become of all the flair Fantasy managers? This was among key questions posed in our hot topic on the apparently increasingly endangered species of Fantasy Football mavericks Some believe that the ever-reliable Suarez captaincy and the stat-breaking phenomena that is Yaya Toure are to blame for the death of the risk-taking Fantasy boss. Others wondered if the so-called “flair managers” have just lost their mojo. McKanata was among those who took part in the discussion and put forward the theory that, with more data at their disposal during the second half of the season, maverick managers may have more confidence to roll the dice with their selections. Time will tell.

Perhaps the decline of the flair manager is down to the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game discouraging risk-taking? We asked how the FPL game could be improved to boost maverick management and reward those who look beyond the “template”. Among the options considered, by Anti Top Four and TokyoRed, was the idea of scrapping the winter Wildcard. While TorresMagic favours a sliding scale of points based on ownership of players, with differentials carrying greater weight for the goals and assists they rack up. The FPL propeller heads would surely combust at such a prospect.

On a similar theme, Koflok believes consistently performing bandwagons are making this season easier for the so-called “casual managers” to match the more focused and “hands-on” Fantasy bosses. In previous seasons, the likes of Aaron Ramsey were unable to score double figures week after week and would have been dismissed by savvy managers as a mere bandwagon. This season, though, such players have sustained their form and repaid those who jumped on board early – either through the lure of a bandwagon or their skillful judgment.

The Casual’s post highlights the dangers of missing out on this season’s consistent performers and focusing too much on differentials. Inspired by Mark’s recent Scoutcast revelation that he plans to focus his Wildcard selection on form midfield differentials, The Casual urges caution. He tracks his own scores against Mark’s from Gameweek 8 to show the eye-popping ranking and transfer value gulf between the “smart casual” and those who dare to be different. Looking at his analysis it’s no wonder that the risk-takers have had a re-think this term.

Manchester City’s somewhat inevitable progress to the Capital One Cup final means their Manchester derby in Gameweek 28 will be rescheduled. This is set to leave Fantasy managers with a tough choice: do they bench expensive players like Sergio Aguero and Yaya Toure, or do they dare to move them on? Caine & Co is among those who answered our Hot Topic, claiming he was happy to ditch all his Manchester assets, aside from the frighteningly potent Aguero. Greenwindmill announced that he is likely to continue to shun United’s players and bench his City pack.

Juan Mata’s arrival at Old Trafford could shake up a few plans, however. The Red Devils new playmaker supreme prompted a popular discussion with Neotheny among those more than happy to add Mata to his roster, regardless of the Gameweek 28 blank.

Mata was not the only new name brought in from the cold this week. Your Mum’s Athletic has been looking at some further last-minute punts likely to interest the hordes of late Wildcarders. Sunderland’s on-loan forward Fabio Borini and Crystal Palace’s Marouane Chamakh are among his rather surprising left-field choices.

Finally, Give The Todd Some Love decided to take the opportunity offered by this week’s Premier League break to delve into the origins of some of our posters’ usernames. While his will be obvious to fans of US sitcom Scrubs, Colonel Shoe’s was less transparent and has its routes in two childhood nicknames melded together. Meanwhile, Syd’s love of Pink Floyd is the inspiration behind his moniker. There’s plenty of ideas and food for thought for those watching in and perhaps looking to announce themselves in the coming weeks.

The Community Leagues

Teltzham Hotspurs continues to lead HeelsOverHead’s “Worst To First 2Million + Club”, for teams who suffered an overall rank below 2,000,000 in the first five Gameweeks. He improved his overall FPL rank to 23,398. Five teams are now within the top 100,000 and chasing his crown.

Grumpy Camel tops Torres Magic’s “Last Man Standing” league, which now stands at 226 strong as 21 were booted out after Gameweek 22. Goal_Machine leads TM’s “After Xmas” League, while Bosh sits atop the Millionaire Club. Unbelievable Bentek-kers, at 84th overall, leads the seedings for his FPL Open and Elite 64 contests. All his league details can be found here.

Evs continues to blaze a trail in the FFS Old Farts Club – a tournament to cater for our more senior posters. The Welshman has also reclaimed top spot in our FFS Moderators and Contributors league from Atheltico Timbo. As if these two league leads were not enough, Evs is also one of six leaders in In Tommy We Trust’s “All Things FPL” league, alongside Billy Ketsu, Jambo 17, Koneheads and Bootsy and Athletico Timbo. But there is hope for his competitors as Evs has lost his Puffin Boy Memorial Cup league lead to Don The Special One: Don really is the special one, having usurped our Hall of Fame leader.

In the Iron Man competition, for those taking part in multiple games, there is no change, with that Jonty chap retaining the lead in the FPL component of the competition, while Gigging Order continues to top the Sky Sports game, while FFS moderator, In Like Flynn, has cemented his lead in the Metro league.

    Mannone Marshall
    Kosc Ward Azpili* (Clyne* Chester*)
    Hazard Cabaye Silva Puncheon Januzaj*
    Suarez Giroud* (JRod)

FT already used.Have enough in the bank to do Giroud to Aguero for a hit this week.Other issues include Azpili,Clyne and Januzaj(Rotation Risks) and Chester(injured)

With this staring lineup, should I take a hit this week?If yes, then who should I remove?

Surely Mata will start right need to get him before price rises ?

"We’ve got a really exciting player. We’ve lacked a bit of creativity and imagination in the final third of the pitch and I really hope Juan can deliver quickly.

‘Juan’s not too far away. I know he has missed a few games and not started as many as he’d have liked, but I’d like to get him involved against Cardiff. He will handle everything.

If you can absorb the 0.1 rise for 100% certainty, would just miss the price rise.

I'd rather deal with certainty in this situation. Especially as you're probably selling a player who will play 90min.

But if you're 90% sure he'll start it might be worth the risk to save 0.1? You have to weigh up all the odds.

if he's 90% sure and budget can't hold the price rise, by all means.

Agree that you have to weigh up all the odds but like i said, I would prefer to deal with certainty in this situation personally as I can afford to miss the rise.

That being said, you're a United fan GB...thoughts on Mata starting?

What to do with this lot?

Seems to be slightly falling apart after wildcarding last week...

    Boruc - Davis
    Kolarov - Coleman - Sagna - Collins - Chester
    Hazard - Silva - Cabaye - Lallana - Colback
    Suarez - Aguero - Sturridge
    0,0 ITB

Keepers should be ok even though I was a bit worried that Boruc was out of the squad for the cup match. Presumably that was just rest though.

In defence I'm a bit more troubled:
Chester is injured for sure. Coleman also most likely out. Kolarov not nailed on. Collins has Chelsea away.

In midfield Silva is a doubt, Cabaye is constantly under a lot os transfer speculation. I even have a feeling Hazard might be rested after playing the full 90 yesterday. Colback of course is not nailed on either.

Strikers should be fine unless Rodgers goes back to 4-2-3-1 and drops Studge.

I was hoping I could save a transfer this week as well...

What would you wise FFS people recommend?

Rmwct? Quite template but would appreciate some opinions....

    Next gw:

    Boruc
    Coleman, Mert, Ivan
    Mata, Hazard, Yaya, Cabaye
    Suarez, Aguero, Ade

K Davis, Ward, Noone, Vlaar, 0.2 itb

Got Coleman and Mert cheap, so hanging on to them. Decided not to have 2nd playing keeper to save funds for future Ade/Cabaye upgrade (maybe downgrade Ivan if need be).

What do you mean by 'in loop'. I'm sure he's involved.

Getting Rooney to sign a new contract is good business, whatever the cost.

Bony record in all comps in last 5 games:

    1 Jan - City(h) - 2 goals
    5 Jan - United(a) - 1 goal
    11 Jan - United(a) - 0 goals
    19 Jan - Spurs(h) - 1 goal
    25 Jan - Birm(a) - 2 goals

A no brainer if I have ever seen one with FUL/west/CAR coming up.

dealing with the same issue. I'm most likely getting rid of Silva because i) yellow flagged ii) tough fixtures next 2 GW, iii) have Aguero for the city attack and iv) have no other Arsenal attack.

    From another Fpl related site:

Had a look at how things are shaping up for gw 29 and dgws now that we have the 5th round draw.

    GW 29 fixtures

    - WBA Man utd will go ahead
    - Norwich Stoke will go ahead
    - Arsenal swansea will be off if either team win their 5th round tie.
    - Man City Villa will be off if city beat chelsea
    - Cardiff Fulham will be off if either team win their 5th round tie.
    - Chelsea Spurs will be off if Chelsea beat City
    - Palace Southampton will be off if southampton beat sunderland.
    - Liverpool sunderland will be off if either team win their 5th round tie.
    - West ham Hull will be off if Hull win at brighton.
    - Newcastle Everton will be off if everton beat swansea.

    Fa Cup 5th rd draw
Arsenal v liverpool, city v chelsea, everton v swansea, sunderland v southampton, cardiff v wigan, brighton v hull and fulham if they win their replay will be at home to forest/preston.

There will be atleast 3 games called off and could be up to 7 games called off depending on certain permuatations.

Assuming the no PL games when there are CL games rule still applies, GW 31, 34 and 37 are the only potential DGW dates.

The Fa Cup 5th round takes place after GW 26 the Fa cup 6th round is GW 29. Meaning we will only have 3 transfers to sort out this mess. I plan to carry a transfer into gw 27 to give me 4 transfers.

Gw 28 utd, city, sunderland and wba miss out. City and sunderland could have a blank gw 28 and 29.

I've done some research on potential GW29 postponements and here are the results, we can split the fixtures into four categories:

The First category of games are those that will definitely be on:

    Norwich Vs Stoke
West Bromwich Albion Vs Manchester United

The Second category are dependent on FA Cup progress:

Should the teams involve be eliminated in the next round of the FA Cup those games will definitely be on.

However if any of the teams involved in this category progress in the FA Cup the game should be moved to midweek as none of the teams have a mid week european game:

    Cardiff Vs Fulham
    Crystal Palace Vs Southampton
    Liverpool Vs Sunderland
    Newcastle Vs Everton
    West Ham United Vs Hull

The Third category of games are those involving teams who definitely have midweek european commitment:

So should any of the teams progress in the FA Cup they will have a blank GW29:

    Arsenal vs Swansea
    Man City Vs Aston Villa

The most complex category of the four is the Chelsea Vs Tottenham game:

This game will be on if Chelsea are eliminated from the FA Cup.
This game will be on if Tottenham are eliminated from The Europa League.
This game should be played in midweek if Chelsea progress in the FA Cup and Tottenmham are eliminated from The Europa League.
This game will definitely be off if Tottenham progress in the Europa League.

In Conclusion this gives a likely fixture list of:

    Norwich Vs Stoke
West Bromwich Albion Vs Manchester United
    Cardiff Vs Fulham
    Crystal Palace Vs Southampton
    Liverpool Vs Sunderland
    Newcastle Vs Everton
    West Ham United Vs Hull

With the games most likely to be postponed being:
    Arsenal vs Swansea
    Man City Vs Aston Villa
    Chelsea VS Tottenham
