End of Season Awards – The Defenders

Having started the End of Season awards with the Goalkeepers, we now turn our attentions to Defenders, after Sunderland’s Vito Mannone racked up over 50% of the votes cast for keepers:

Once again, please bear in mind that the vote is from an overall Fantasy perspective – overall points, price, performances and Fantasy Premier League (FPL) value should all come into consideration here:

The new poll is on the home page (middle column), with four defenders available for your selection this time round.

Seamus Coleman
A goal, assist and maximum bonus points in the season opener at Norwich ensured the Everton right-back was immediately installed in many manager’s sides. Starting the season at just 5.0, Coleman’s star has risen under the guidance of Roberto Martinez, with six strikes and a pair of assists supplemented by 13 clean sheets and 20 bonus points indicative of his potential at both ends of the pitch. Now owned by 37% of FPL managers, the Republic of Ireland international is the most popular defensive option by some distance, rising to 6.8 in price – with just a single match remaining, his 174 points is enough to earn Coleman top spot in the defender rankings so far.

Leighton Baines
Whilst his fellow Toffees full-back has served up the most points, Baines has still managed to outscore Coleman in terms of points per game, by 5.3 to 5.0 – indeed, his average is higher than any defensive regular this season. Priced at 7.5 as the season got underway, the left-back’s popularly suffered as a result of his team-mate’s superior value but, as Coleman’s price escalated, there’s not been that much between them in the second half of the season. With five goals, five assists, 26 bonus points and 12 clean sheets over his 31 appearances, Baines sits on 163 points – third amongst defenders – and despite missing six matches through injury, is just 14 points off last season’s 177.

John Terry
Having played a part in just 14 matches in 2012/13, with previous boss Rafa Benitez citing concerns over a knee problem for his lack of game time, the Chelsea skipper was handed a 6.0 price-tag this time around. Under Jose Mourinho, Terry has missed just three league fixtures and helped the Blues rediscover their defensive edge, with the London club conceding a mere 26 times in the first 37 Gameweeks. Terry has chipped in with three goals, an assist and 14 clean sheets. He has also proven to be one of the main beneficiaries of the change to the bonus points system – his total of 29 bonus points is not only more than any other backline option, it is superior to any Stamford Bridge team-mate.

Branislav Ivanovic
The Serbian started the season with a 6.5 price-tag after scoring five times in 33 starts over the previous campaign. Ivanovic’s security of game time has continued under Jose Mourinho – he’s played 34 of the Blues’ first 37 matches and has mirrored Terry’s above-mentioned attacking output, in addition to delivering 16 clean sheets. His right-back berth may have earned him just 16 bonus points by comparison, but he still sits fourth amongst defenders on 157 points, yet has risen in price by only 0.2 over the season.

Martin Skrtel
Liverpool’s free-scoring defender has found the net more than any other backline option this season. After warming the bench for the first two Gameweeks, Skrtel has started every one of the Merseysiders’ subsequent 35 matches, with his aerial ability in the opposition box helping him to seven goals for Brendan Rodgers’ title-challenging side. A lack of resilience has proven costly, though, with Skrtel managing just eight clean sheets in a campaign that has seen the Reds concede 49 times; nonetheless, his current haul of 137 points is vastly superior to last term’s minimal 88 in Rodgers’ first year at the Anfield helm.

Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny
Arsenals’ first-choice centre-half pairing both started the campaign at 5.5 but have made a mockery of their price tags. Mertesacker and Koscielny have both delivered 16 clean sheets – joint-top amongst defenders – and have each found the net on a couple of occasions thus far, with the German also chipping in with an assist over his 35 appearances. Arsenal have managed just a single shut-out in the six games Koscielny has missed this term and the Frenchman has delivered a greater average than his team-mate, with 4.8 ppg to Mertesacker’s 4.5, and has earned more bonus points (24 to 23) in spite of the fact he has played four fixtures fewer. The German leads the way for overall points by 157 to 148, though Koscielny has proven a greater differential – he is owned by only 8% of FPL managers compared to his team-mate’s 25%.

Jose Fonte
Priced at 4.5 as the season got underway, the Southampton centre-half was quick out the blocks. By Gameweek 2, Fonte had already delivered a goal, a clean sheet and maximum bonus, and proved to be a key component of a Saints back-four that conceded just three times in the opening nine matches. Having delivered three goals, 15 clean sheets and 21 bonus points, he’s served up 147 points and is the highest-scoring budget defender of the season and best value outfield player thus far, currently sitting 25 points ahead of any other defensive team-mate.

Joel Ward
Palace’s versatile defender has afforded Fantasy managers a real bargain option this term. Starting at 4.0, Ward has been utilised in both full-back positions and, on occasion, central midfield as the Eagles produced a dramatic turnaround under Tony Pulis. The signs looked ominous after the Selhurst Park club failed to produce a single shut-out in their first 10 matches but Ian Holloway’s departure has since helped Ward earn 12 clean sheets and 13 bonus points, with a pair of assists also accrued. Now up to 4.5 and with a share of corners, he’s been far more than just a budget enabler this season.

James Chester
Granted, a total of 56 points is less than half team-mate Curtis Davies’ 114 but the latter’s 4.5 starting price ensured we steered well clear as we scoured the promoted sides for bargains. Priced at 4.0, Chester found himself as a cheap bench-warming defender for many Fantasy sides around these parts, and whilst injuries curtailed his game time and limited him to a goal and five clean sheets over 22 starts, Chester’s favourable price and security of starts – when fit – meant that he probably lasted longer in some 15-man squads than the majority of defensive alternatives.

Steven Caulker
Frustratingly for Fantasy managers, the Cardiff centre-half started the season at Tottenham and came in at 5.0 when the Player Price Lists were released back in July. In spite of his side’s dire defensive record – just seven clean sheets and 72 goals conceded – Caulker’s attacking potential has ensured he remained a viable option; the only defender to have managed every minute of the season, he’s served up five goals and 19 bonus points and sits on 121 points; 53 more than any other player in the Bluebirds’ backline.

Pablo Zabaleta
Amongst defenders, the City right-back is second only to Seamus Coleman in terms of popularity, with an ownership level of 26%. Zabaleta’s attacking forays have produced a goal and six assists, though a change to the bonus point system has proven detrimental – he’s picked up just 11 so far, to go along with 14 clean sheets. Having appeared 34 times under Manuel Pellegrini, Zabaleta is the top-scoring City defender on 137 points – 13 points more than last term’s haul of 124 for the champions-elect.

Guy Demel
A cult hero around these parts, the West Ham right-back has delivered 13 clean sheets so far – offering strong value on a starting price of 4.5. Demel has mustered just a single goal and one assist, whilst a total of eight bonus points has hardly caught the eye but, in a season where most of Sam Allardyce’s backline have been hampered with injury, in addition to a change of first-choice keeper midway through the campaign, the Ivorian has been the most secure defensive pick the Upton Park outfit has had to offer. With 112 points returned, he’s 21 ahead of last term’s haul and 26 ahead of any other Hammers defender.

Patrice Evra
The United left-back was firmly on course to better last season’s 152 points, having started 28 of the first 29 league matches. With just four appearances in the last eight league fixtures, though, Evra’s fortunes have taken a turn for the worse, though he’s still managed to serve up 140 points – three more than Liverpool’s Skrtel, for example. Priced at 6.5 as the season got underway, the Frenchman has produced a goal, five assists and 19 bonus points in addition to 13 clean sheets for the Old Trafford outfit and is a good 54 points clear of any other defensive team-mate.

    Hmmmm the plot thickens.

Lamela was spotted back in Roma however apparently that was to see a back specialist he's used to dealing with.

Either he's really got a very bad injury or he's leaving in the Summer.

Shame, I'd like to see him adjust and play in the PL.

could imagine Eriksen playing at least one full season, but Lloris might be leaving now. Rumours about Spurs bidding for Marshall suggest that Lloris is on his way out. Maybe to Barcelona?

? He's only 22 and has been consistently excellent since he was 18. He might not have had the best international career yet, but there's still plenty of time. He's excelled against the best in the world in the CL for the past 3 years

I more mean that people expected huge things of him, I'm not saying he isn't a very talented and able player. I do however think that for a couple of seasons people have hyped him up to be more than he is currently. Nothing against him, more the hype.

the curse of the modern age - there's a good young player that some people have seen, they tell others, they watch him on youtube, buy him on FM, tell everyone else how amazing he is - eventually whoever it is will never live up to that hype 😉

Exactly 😉 I'd heard so much about Eriksen from my mates that I was expecting a revelation (I'd caught him a few times in CL and thought him good). A lot of potential mind you!

Paulinho is better than good. Verthongen and Capoue too. Unfortunate to AVB that he got that injury his second or third match? Was outstanding until that and then was returned as CB which was odd to say the least.

I reckon Capoue is on his way out as may be Verthongen too.

Dembele is barely okay, and should stay.

I agree actually that Capoue was very good until the injury.

I think a few PL teams will be circling, Capoue, Paulinho and Vert would be snapped up. God knows United could do with all of them.

Don't rule out move abroad. I think Capoue, for one. was in quite a few Serie A rumours. Paulinho and Vert have managed to play much more in PL, so are more likely to move inside the league.

It's awful how this season went for Capoue. he was shoe in, and more, for French World Cup team and a likely starter even, but surely has lost his place now.

I hope for his sake he makes it. Sometimes they are aware of the potential of the player, as I said Lamela is still possibly going to get a call up for Argentina. I do hope Capoue makes it in the team. And I agree, he's the most likely to leave for abroad, I hope he doesn't though.

Absolutely, i think it comes down to the new coach in Spurs.
He must get a certain coach, if not they might bebetter of loaning him out a year to get his confidence back. At his best he would be an atratction in PL.

He was rested to let the youngsters play. I don't think he is dropped and I reckon Giggs will return to a similar 11 that lost against Norwich...

    UFPL question here

Anyone else have the issue of their Captain and Vice captain not updating?

Rooney my captain didn't play, obviously.
But Yaya was my vice did play and his score hasn't updated.
It just says 17 points. Surely it should be 34.

In all honesty, none of us know for sure who's going to do better out of any of these duels:

    Sturridge vs Dzeko
    Hazard vs Gerrard
    Silva vs Gerrard
    Silva vs Hazard
    Sturridge vs Lukaku
    Dzeko vs Lukaku
    Remy vs Lukaku
    Remy vs Sturridge
    Remy vs Dzeko

They're all 50/50 and nobody knows, go with your gut, there's no better indicator on the last day of the season, and then just wait for someone like Odemwingie to outscore them all.

I'm defending a 28 point ML lead don't fancy cutting that to 20.

Camp No No was right, very little being talked about Pool being investigated over FFP.

Consistent losses over the last 2 seasons summing to the tune of £100 million. I wonder if anything will come of it.

It is a dodgy business model basing your spending on money you don't have. Just ask Rangers they did it for years before it caught up with them. 😆

FFP should really focus on that: spending the money before you have it. It's much worse than if there's some rich dude giving you all that money, that's at least money that you already do have.

Valencia, Real Madrid, Barcelona and likes should all be punished severely.

But the point of it is to level the playing field slightly by preventing those clubs with wealthy owners from having a massive advantage over the other clubs.

I know that's the point, but it should only be a secondary point if that. The problem is that teams spend more money than they have. The problem is not that some people are pouring money in football, I think that's advantage to all (except for being clearly whitewash of dirty money). They should primarily sanction living on debt, and think about making "non-football related" money only after that. Imo, if Abramovich wants to buy Hazards shoes from Chelsea for £100M, there's little that we can say is wrong about that. But the teams that live on huge debts, give massive contracts to players and are unable to pay those wages are the problem. As is the third party ownership of players, which should not be allowed.

Big issue in the Bundesliga as it is. No teams can really compete with Bayern without breaking FFP.

That's, however, the league where teams actually make profit. And a lot of it.

HSV is the ridiculous example. The player provider of all Bundesliga, without any ambitions of ever winning anything. But money they do make.

A lot of profit is made certainly, one reason because Bayern would insist anyone that didn't and challenged them be investigated.

It's a funny situation, FFP suits Bayern hugely because their profits are so much bigger than the rest that they can consistently stay within FFP while buying great players. Other teams can't do that.

HSV are the very extreme case definitely.

But maybe not. There are some holes in FFP, and they may have a way to use them, especially as they may have a whole year of time to turn things in their favour, because they do not investigate teams that don't play in CL or EL. So, Pool has been saved for a moment and probably can do all the transfers they wish this summer and then only possibly get the sanctions for the summer 2015.

    Fellas--

I've never come here before for help (not true), and I really hate to do it now (also not true), but I'm in a very tough position in my mini-league and could really use some advice (desperately).

I'm 3 points behind the leader, and I was 40 points behind 2 GWs ago. Problem is, my team is in a shambles. Injuries this week to Aguero, Jones and Chester have left me with a depleted roster. Concerns over the pitch time of Mata and Evra compound that problem. Here's my team, and any advice would be appreciated:

    Mannone (Adrian)
Evra I Ward I Dummett I Chester (INJ) I Jones (INJ)
Mata I Eriksen I Nasri I Sterling I Ki (INJ)
Suarez I Dzeko I Aguero (INJ)

    1.2 million in the bank

I realize my team isn't very good and my rank is weak. But I really want to win this mini-league.

My inclination is to do Aguero and Mata for Sturridge and Yaya and not take a hit for my crap defense. But I don't want to transfer out an uninjured player who might play (Mata). Ki is so cheap that there's very little I can get for him.

    Any creative solutions here?

Aguero > Sturridge is the obvious move for your free transfer and frees up some funds, however if you buy Wickham, you could upgrade Ki to anyone you want. That way you can bench Mata and he can come in for Eriksen or Sterling if they don't feature.

Interesting thought on Wickham, thanks. Something to consider that I hadn't really thought of.

It will also depend on how many hits I can take. If my rival takes one, I'll consider taking two. That might give me flexibility to get Baines in, who would be one of very few defenders I'd consider taking a hit for.

Not taking a hit would give you the 3 points you're behind.

      Wait till Sunday morning.
If Aguero's out then replace him with Sturridge.
Otherwise just replace Jones - Skrtel could be an option.

Wickham has injury concerns - avoid. (I've got him and I've no idea how much he'll play)

    @ Somalian

Just in response to your reply earlier (I've only just seen it).

My concern is that the criticism of the Liverpool team celebrating the win against City as believing they had won the title is directed at the players. I just don't think that is accurate or fair.

Fans on the other hand do get carried away, especially those in the stands - but then I don't begrudge them singing we are going to win the league, because that is part and parcel of supporting the team and creating atmosphere in the stadium. For example, if I was at the stadium I would have joined in but it would be somewhat detached from my view - which has always been sceptical until I actually see the trophy on the table!

Oh Christ no not the players, I thought Stevie in particular was very quick to calm the others.

No I wouldn't begrudge them singing either, to be honest it's more from a few conversations I've had with Pool fans that were frankly deluded. It's one thing to beat City with Aguero just back and Yaya going off early. It's another thing to claim that even if Yaya and Aguero were fit they would have "easily thrashed them like today" (actual words)

As I said, I genuinely had nothing against Pool and I like an underdog story. The only thing that irritated me a lot was the defending, some say it's not important but I find it more irritating seeing teams concede stupid goals than someone missing a sitter. That's all though, I've thoroughly enjoyed the attacking football.
