Pre-Season

Sleeper – Theo Walcott

Having finished sixth overall in the 2012/13 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) standings, our hopes were high for Theo Walcott’s prospects at the beginning of last summer. The Arsenal winger produced 14 goals and 13 assists in just 24 starts and looked to have finally rid himself of the inconsistency that had blighted his previous campaigns:

The latter started the season slowly, with just two assists in his first three appearances before Arsene Wenger acquired Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid in a real statement of intent. The German’s eye for a killer pass looked tailor-made for Walcott’s runs in behind backline defences but, in their first appearance in the same XI, it was Aaron Ramsey who hogged the headlines, scoring twice in a 3-1 away win over Sunderland in Gameweek 4.

Walcott picked up a pelvic problem prior to the club’s following game and whilst Ozil and Ramsey began to deliver the points, their team-mate spent the next couple of months on the injury list before being gradually introduced to the action via a handful of sub appearances. Climbing off the bench in four successive matches between Gameweek 12-15, Walcott still found time to tee up a pair of assists in just 63 minutes before he was finally handed a starting role against City in mid-December.

Wenger’s side left the Etihad licking their wounds after a 6-3 mauling highlighted their defensive flaws, yet for Fantasy managers, the day was all about Walcott after he produced a 13-point haul, courtesy of two goals and a single bonus point. The next four league games harvested three goals, an assist and six bonus points as the wide man’s bandwagon picked up in pace over the New Year before disaster struck. A knee injury in the FA Cup Third Round win over north London rivals Tottenham ruled Walcott out for the season and deprived us of his services just when he’d hit top form.

The Prospects

Those five appearances, which delivered three sets of double figures and helped Walcott average 6.9 points per start in 2013/14, underlines just why he was so sorely missed by Fantasy managers. Discussing his rehabilitation with the club’s official matchday magazine late last month, the wideman revealed that he’s somewhat hesitant to put an exact date on his potential comeback:

“I want to be back quickly, of course — but safely, too. I want to try and be back for the early part of next season. That is the goal, so there will be a lot of hard work throughout the summer and during the World Cup. It has nearly been four months now, and my recovery has been on track so far. At the moment I’m working on muscle strength and building muscle in my quad. I see the consultant soon, and hopefully he will give me the thumbs up to push on. I would love to be running in a few weeks.”

Providing all’s good and well, though, Walcott looks likely to be on course to return in time for the new campaign. Price-wise, he started last term at 9.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) but there’d be no surprise if he even dropped to 9.0 due to the fact he managed a mere 860 minutes for the Gunners.

Elsewhere in the Arsenal midfield, Ramsey’s excellent season will trigger a price hike across the Fantasy games but bearing in mind he missed over three months through injury, it remains to be seen whether the Welshman has done enough to be elevated into the premium bracket. Certainly, there seems no doubt that Yaya Toure, Steven Gerrard and Eden Hazard could all break the 10.0 barrier this time around after the trio all surpassed the 200-point mark in 2013/14.

Indeed, Ramsey’s price may ultimately determine how some view Walcott. If the Welshman can stay under 9.0, he may well be the main Arsenal target for many Fantasy managers, potentially affording Walcott the role of differential amongst our midfield options. On the other hand, if Ramsey is shifted into the same category as Walcott, Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla, it’d be hard to overlook a fully-fit Theo, firing on all cylinders, as our Arsenal midfielder of choice once again.

Yeah, as TM says like the Beach soccer footy.

I also just thought it would be handy to have a designated spot where people could check on how the rules work and just discuss general tactics etc.

I know you guys are running articles on the promoted sides, sleeper articles(as above) etc so it would be shame if some of the useful WC posts "get lost".

Just a thought. I'm sure you guys have it all figured out.

Plenty will be reading over posting in the off season.
Most comments will be World Cup orientated. Either during games or fantasy based.
Beach Soccer was for a selective group of posters. Those not playing fantasy then won't care as FPL isn't on at the same time.

Ah well, it should be easy to see all our articles we have a World Cup category. Check the "filed under" for each article. When you go to that it'll take you to all our world cup articles.

Almost all chat will be world cup dominated so it'll be constant and varied throughout. It'd be like having a separate FPL thread during the Prem League season.

Re any World Cup community competitions - eg FFS UEFA's Beach Soccer - the new Community Submissions section deals with that. Anyone running a competition of league can post an article there and that becomes the place where people can discuss that particular competition.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Walcott is certainly on many fantasy managers radars for 2014/15 after a dire 2013/14 where his playing time was curtailed by injury.

Aside from Walcott who else is in the sleeper category, who failed to impress this season but could be set for a great 2014/15?

Phillipe Coutinho to some extent. He looked promising at the tail end of the 2012/13 season but failed to live up to the high standards he appeared to have set himselg. He looks to still be maturing as a player, and under Rodgers' coaching over the summer and the exclusion of a World Cup squad place this time around, could see the young Brazilian determined to blossom.

Michu, A total failure of a season but again, he was near essential the season prior. Whether he will move on, be the same player after his injury and even be able to partner Bony, will remain to be seen.

Andy Carroll. He was not helped by an awful injury which saw him miss the majority of the season. His statistics, particularly with regard to the number of touches in the box, highlight how much he is the focal point of West Ham's attack. Provided that Allardyce remains in charge, the pony tailed assassin may bear more fruit next term.

I know. He needs to rest them. I recall when he said that he's been thinking Giroud needs a rest, but every time he tries to think of not playing Giroud in some game, he finds the difficulty of not having another player who would bring same qualities in game, so he has to play him.

Now, with Özil, this isn't exactly true, because he can be more or less replaced by Cazorla or Rosicky. And I think Sanogo, too, should have replaced Giroud more often. He can bring similar qualities.

And in fact, it's not only about starters. If they're 2 up with 20 minutes to go, it is always the perfect time to sub off Giroud and Özil. But he just about never did that, instead forced them to defend till the bitter end. And no wonder they got tired. If he lacks strikers and play makers, he could just sub them for two defensive players at that point. 2-0 at 70 minutes, Giroud and Özil out, Vermaelen and Arteta in. Voi-fecking-là!

why is it not true? with more pace you vary the attack giving him more options, otherwise the same players will get worn again & you'll have the same returns & everyone will say he's a disappointment. thats my point.

It is not true, because you said he won't play well without a pacy striker to run for through balls, while the truth is he did not disappoint when Walcott was away, he played well and Arsenal was playing possession football anyway, little room for runners.

they need more rotation and rest for Özil and Giroud, but nothing in that says they need precisely someone fast to run behind the defence. These are two different things. So if that was your point, you did not make it the first time.

i didnt say that, i said he'll continue to disappoint, i meant it from a fantasy perspective, if walcott & the ox are injured again most of the season & we rely on giroud & ramsey then we'll have the same returns & he'll be considered a disappointment regardless of how well he actually plays.

& you should know from his madrid days how effective he is when he's got pacy players running on to his through balls, it's not rocket science that having someone like walcott with his pace & goal scoring attributes will lead to more assist points for ozil.

I really think RVP will be firmly back on the radar for next season. Fired up and playing under LVG. A price dropping Van Persie for next year.

Ozil. I like to get my wumming of Ozil in now as I do genuinely believe he's going to come good, real good. Certainly showed glimpses and signs of his ability this season. A season where he was adapting to the premier league. For someone who supposedly had a 'below par' season, his goal and assist tally for it was still pretty good. Only more to come with this one I feel.

And of course, Walcottt!! FPL legend, quality player! Just don't get soo injured this season.

There was a discussion about Walcott yesterday and whether he can fully recover from ACL injury. Received wisdom is that pace is a particular problem, as it seems most players lose some of their pace after ACL. Since speed is such a big part of Theo's game, it seems reasonable to assume that he won't be the same player.

    But I did find this - http://the-number-fourteen.blogspot.co.uk/2013/02/football-players-after-acl-tear.html

I hadn't realised Shearer had done his ACL, van Nistelrooy and Baggio too. All suffered it early in their careers. But my favourite quote is from Del Piero:

"I was out for 12 months, four on crutches. It changed my career and made me a better player. Before it I was a tough guy, fast, technically good, still only on instinct. After I was able to tame it too and am more balanced."

There's hope for Theo yet 🙂

i thought del piero was a shadow of his former self when he had that injury, maybe my memory is bad.

as for walcott he's almost too fast, he often struggles to control the ball cos he's practically running past the thing he's so fast, maybe losing a yard will give him better control, help improve his technique & composure & become a better player for it.

Yep. But perhaps Theo can follow Del Piero's path - using the injury to become less reliant on pace

This is slightly confusing. Either you captained Bale & RVP very rarely to get that sort of average.

I think this is closer, not sure anyone will start higher than 14. Im hoping RVP might be substantially less but still unlikely to be value. Ramsey could be decent if he can come in at less than 10. Yaya is likely to be expensive and extremely likely to not be worth it.

no doubt his attitude has been poor in the past, and his hot temper is a real worry...he has the potential to be great, however he aint gonna do anything if he keeps getting injured...not too sure what to think of him atm...hasn't really progressed since his debut season

I think he could end up a little like Joe Cole, alot of promise not fulfilled. He'll put in some great performances in the future but he'll never be in the class that so many thought he would be. A good solid player if he can remain injury free.

I am confused as to where Wenger is going to have him play now Ozil is the main man for the number 10 position and Ramsey for the number 8. He cannot play on either flank so that just leaves the holding role...

Deep role next to Ramsey I suspect. In truth his position is up I'm the air atm with the emergence of Ramsey and signing of Ozil but I think that deep role suits him.

exactly...he cant play alongside ramsey cos he cant really defend...he will start in central attacking midfield probably when santi leaves/becomes average with ozil on the left...ozil loves going to the flank to receive the ball

Exactly. I think he could just play same position as Özil. It doesn't hurt to have to CAM's rotating. You never know, maybe they wouldn't get worn out and injured.

Looking at the price predictions posts. We will have to sacrifice a couple of those names to make an affordable team next season.

This is why I'm thinking Nasri is going to have to be my Yaya substitute.

Finished the season so strongly with 3 goals and 6 assists and is coming into next season on fresh legs.

I understand that Yaya is a different beast and there will be weeks where I'm left rueing my decision but some where I'll be blessing it, which will be sweeter. Were all going to have to make sacrifices to afford a team so I have to start somewhere, and I think this could be a good alternative.

What sacrifices are you thinking of making?

yeah he does, so do city, always score bundles of goals which he tends to be involved in, its why i'm surprised so few had him earlier in the season (let alone later), particularly when there were hardly any other decent MF options at the time.

I'm not doing any thinking until the game opens really, but Yaya will probably be the one big player I'd sacrifice if need be. Maybe Hazard.

Hazard leaving to PSG will open doors. But I would like to have him next season and keep him the whole way, except injuries, so I can get his inevitable major hauls. He was shite leading up to that Cardiff game then boom. Explodes.

depends really. form varies from season to season & i'm sure they'll be players who've done well this season who'll struggle next season & you wont want them anyway (remember how nani went from being a great fantasy player to being a dud almost overnight?)

The Africa Cup of Nations takes place 17 January to 8 February 2015 .

I like Nasri too. No World Cup means he'll be nice and fresh for the start of the season.

Why would he be priced higher than that? I doubt even that. 8.5 at max. It's not as if he was amongst top scoring midfielders this season.

All this FFP stuff could be good news for would be investors in Nasri too. My worry would be he always seems about bottom of the pecking order of the mids playing. If they don't sign another in that position you'd expect him to be pretty nailed.

Think he went up a notch this season Nasri. The players I expect City to sign this season is another deep mid for when Yaya goes away and because Rodwell is always injured and Garcia is nowhere near as good as Yaya or Fernandinho, and they'll get another centre back.

This season he seemed to top the pecking order, well, bar YaYa, so no longer those worries. City being handed a transfer ban would bring some nice stability FPL wise.

It's the same every year. The players who did well the previous season are obvously the costliest and most sought after. Everyone complains that it's too hard to pick a team, with the exception of a few generously priced players, possibly due to changing clubs after the prices are released.

The key is to decide which of the expensive players are really essential and pick some less glamorous but reliable players to compliment them as well as a small amount of measure punts (e.g. players who were promoted or who you think will do better this time round).

By the first international break, if you got it terribly wrong with your initial selection and weren't able to resolve it with your FTs, just play your WC.

Without knowing the prices I imagine that of the highest scoring players, only Suarez will be essential. Picking the two most affordable of Aguero and RVP to go alongside Suarez and a third mid-price forward will be the way to go. I also don't plan to invest in any of Yaya, Gerrard, Hazard or Lallana if he plays at 'Pool and will have just one or two expensive mids.

Bony next to Suarez and RVP/Aguero/Costa. Strikers proved their worth this season.

Really no Hazard? He's always a page 1 midfielder on penalties and can explode. With a good striker like Costa with him, he could be deadly; if he stays.

I'm worries he'll be rotated a bit more after his public fall-out with Mourinho and the wealth of attacking mids doing well for Chelsea, but I could be wrong.

I would like him if budget weren't an issue, but since it will be tight, I will sacrifice him I think

I can never not be tempted by him in FPL because his stats always look so good. Lots of shots and on majority of set pieces. Flatters to deceive though. And always had a soft spot for Sess since his first few games for Sunderland.

Thanks for the upvote brother. It is desperate times with no FPL around, so will take what i can get.

Same here, I've always like Sess despite his form issues. I do think him a better player to Snod as well.

Depends. There are some weaker parts, but I'd say the top is pretty strong level these days. Above Championship, or let's say top of Championship.

But he had to learn a lot of new stuff to come back. He was no longer just a pace player, and he learned to use his right foot. Etc. Wenger did wonders to that bloke.

I was a bit disappointed with Shield. It's decent enough to keep me watching, but a bit of a let down when you've seen all the films.

Ok so you can watch pretty much anything...

I'm currently watching From Dusk Til Dawn the series, which seems pretty good so far.
If you like 24, then Homeland is good.
Maybe Oz if you want another fix of The Wire.

Everyone else are just selfish users. Constantly spam us with RMTs, then as soon as the season is finished they are nowhere to be seen.

Why? DZ is good there's no gravless turds running round spamming RMTs just the best regs on.

You're both right, it's better without the "turds", but these selfish bastards should be punished somehow during the season. Not contributing anything and then they dare to wonder why their endless RMT's are not answered en masse.

Pity you never bring through your youth players...

It's sad as all this talent will go to waste as the blues look for a quick fix and sign a foreign fullback for 20m. 🙁

At best they loan these youngsters out to 20 other clubs, and then they end up signing somewhere there, and are only possibly bought back for some odd £20M-£40M when they're 25-year-old.
